The dinner with a stage show invitees were BWAA members and their spouses and new and previous USBC Hall of Famers and their spouses. This writer a long time member of BWAA and a friend, Ed Abakumoff a newly joined BWAA member attended this dinner. We sat at a table along with famous writers Chuck Pezzano and Joe Lyou, BWAA member Joan Romeo and her daughters, Hall of Famer Robin Romeo and Tori Carter. Ed also served as my inter- preter. At the completion of show and dinner, Columbia 300 host John Jowdy announced the three previously named BWAA Awards winners Carmen Salvino honored with the John O. Martino Award, Al Matzelle with the Rip Van Winkle Award and Joe Gennaro with the Mort Luby, Sr. Hall of Fame Award. Salvino and Gennaro spoke and gave their thanks and a friend spoke for Matzelle. Then Jowdy spoke on the next award Remo Picchietti Humani- tarian Award which goes to a person who unselfishly gave his or her time for the good of bowling. The winner was kept secret until announced at this Dinner. When Ed finger-spelled my name “Connie Marchione” and said it’s for you, I was shocked in disbelief. It did not get in me till after Joe told me “it is you and go”. Then I got all choked up on the way to the head table with Ed following me. Ed interpreted what I signed, “this is an unexpected surprise and I am sorry I do not know what to say but I thank you for this honor and I love you all.” About this award, the late Remo Picchietti, when President of DBA Products, started it for his company years ago to honor per- sons by surprise for his or her humanitarian efforts in bowling. When Picchiettti sold his company to Columbia 300, Columbia took over and named it, Remo Picchietti Humanitarian Award. I am proud to be among the other winners of this award and thank Columbia 300 and Jowdy for this honor. For years I have done many thankless tasks for deaf bowling which I just accept as “God knows I have done my best”. Winning this award took a load off my shoulder. Thank you, Ed for being there with me. LAS VEGAS—If there were any doubts that dynamic pro- moter Steve Sanders would pull off his latest project – an all-new senior bowling tour – they were erased June 29 at International Bowl Expo in Las Vegas. In a press conference at- tended by over 50 bowling writ- ers and industry dignitaries at the Las Vegas Convention Cen- ter, Sanders unveiled the details of his new venture, launched his new website www.gbtour.com, and answered every question from bowling’s top writers with candid and honest replies. Joining Sanders in the con- ference were more than a dozen new GBT staffers and several legends of the sport that will compete in the events. Bowling legends Mark Roth, Johnny Petraglia, Dave Davis, and David Ozio were at the head table and pledged their support for the new tour. “This is what we’ve been waiting for,” said Roth. Davis also expressed his excite- ment by saying, “There’s snow on the roof, but we still have the fire in the belly. We want to com- pete and win as much as ever.” When asked how he would decide which tour to bowl in, Petraglia said, “I’ll bowl in both, and the great thing about this new tour is finally we will get back to a lot of the places we used to bowl and the fans will get to know us again.” Another highlight of the con- ference was the live launching of the official Generations Tour website www.gbtour.com. In front of the entire room, Andrew Aiello, GBT’s website director, Generations Tour is Full Speed Ahead Details Revealed at Bowl Expo navigated the new site to reveal its features at Sanders’ direction. A press kit given attendees contained the full 36-week schedule, feature articles on the tour and its players, and a list of 40 frequently asked questions and answers. At the Bowl Expo trade show, the GBT booth was a popular stop for attendees from across the globe. GBT also announced a regional tour pro- gram to support the new national tour. “This has been a dream of mine since we ran our first big senior event in 1996,” said Sand- ers (his Pinacle Events operated the ’96 BPAA Senior U.S. Open and two Brunswick Senior World Opens). “Now it’s finally here, and we can’t wait to get started. If we can give these great play- ers a chance to have a new career and give the fans something very special, all of the work we’ve done will be worthwhile,” added Sanders. The Generations Bowling Tour (www.gbtour.com) is a membership organization that features the greatest bowlers over the age of 50 competing in a national tour throughout the year. The GBT is offering $5 million in prize money for its 36 events and a legendary line-up of bowlers including Nelson Bur- ton Jr., Mark Roth, Dave Soutar and Marshall Holman. Sharing With A Friend On The Lanesby Sue Mellott

SACRAMENTO—Where California Women’s ChampionshipTournament is currently being held, brought two friends togetheronce again, who have volunteer their service of 35 and 33 years toour bowling sport. A wonderful friendship developed throughoutthese years of support and love of bowling. I would like-to sharewith you a story of friendship to a friend from a friend.

Juanita Campbell and Phyl Knoll have known each other manyyears while attending Conventions and bowling tournaments. Theyboth have worked hard helping and sharing in their associations..The following gives you an idea of their dedication over the years.Phyl is well known for all the activities she is involved in through-out her 35 years of dedication. She has served as President of LosAngeles WBA not only once but twice, served on all committees, appointed to CWBA Board, by Mary Lynly, and presently is direc-tor on the USBC Board. Juanita has served 33 years on the follow-ing WBA Boards. Santa Rosa WA Board for 22 years as a Director,on the Ways & Means Committee, and Senior Activity committee. She was also, on the San Francisco WBA Board, serving as Ser-geant-at- Arms, BVL Chairman for 12 years, and Vice President of500 club.

Juanita received her 25 year plaque this year, as she bowled inCWBA’s Championship Tournament. Upon receiving this awardshe remarked, “How gratifying it is, to receive this award”.

FRIEND — a well-wisher, or supporter. Five years ago Juanitawas presented, by CWBA president, Linda Johnson a 75 year neck-lace award, which represents 75 years of age. Congratulations Juanitafor your devotion to our sport.

CWBA has given this award out over the years to women bowlersthat have participated in our great sport. This year, I’m sure, womenbowlers were highly disappointed to find out the 75 year necklaceis no longer available. I know of one in particular, Phyl Knoll. Shewas short four days last year, and didn’t receive hers. Phyl waslooking forward to receiving the necklace award this year.

While bowling team event, Juanita and Phyl were discussinghow nice the necklace looks and what a great award to receive. Yousee Juanita, was wearing her necklace that displays — CaliforniaWBA, outlines the state of California, a woman bowler, and sev-enty-five years. Juanita saw how disappointed Phyl was - so, guesswhat? Juanita took her necklace off and put it on Phyl saying, “Iwant you to have this” giving Phyl a hug.

That’s a wonderful thing to do for a friend! Being a well-wisher,Juanita ~said to me, “I wanted someone to have the necklace thatwould appreciate it, and if you have a family member who is notaware of our sport, they would get rid of it, they would not under-stand its worth”. “I wanted to share the happiness of what the 75year necklace award means”.

In closing this supporter, Juanita, has invited many people intoour sport to have fun and enjoy, and she is an example of what shesays. Isn’t this what it’s all about? My thanks Juanita it was mypleasure to share with you the joy bowling Has brought you.

    L.V. Bowl/ExpoLures WorldPin Devotees

by Frank KietzLAS VEGAS — Yes, yes,

Hilton Hotel/ConventionCenter’s International Bowl/Expo (Trade Show) attractedthousands of those who like toroll balls at pins (objects) lastweek (June 25-30, 2006) to theircasino. There was a mix, peoplewho sell those products to eagerbusinesses who lure the publicto enjoy them.

For a near century, hand-setAmerican Tenpins was the starattraction. Slowly they devel-oped machines to set up-rightsanctioned pins on lanes thatpeople used regulation balls toknock them down, while a com-puter kept score.

And, accessories that made thegame competitive, then easier, pleasant to play, like shoes, ap-parel, hard rubber balls, thenfancy and expensive ones.

The host Hilton had every-thing. So did the Bowling Pro-prietors Association of America, who put the show together; amarvelous job. They got everypurveyor, manufacturer, sup-plier. They didn’t miss a thing, pool tables, amusement games, even mini-alleys (all kinds ofapparatuses you could roll ballsat pins), string-setters, fromChina, a table with cues and cue-balls to knock down mini-pins.

Oh, the fun part. Food andbeverages, even health drinks(from Acai Berries). If blockingdidn’t work, an ancient secretfrom the rainforest might do it.Try it, you might like it.

It wasn’t too long ago the call“beer frame” thrilled the propri-etor. Now it’s creative

    Division title.The 38-year-old right-

hander, who already owns fourtitles at the USBC Women’sChampionships and three USBCQueens victories, posted gamesof 248, 300 and 264 to edge pastNorm Titus of Columbia, Tenn.,who finished second with 811.

Macpherson’s perfect gamewas the second of the year by awoman and the third in the his-tory of the Open Champion-ships. In addition, she joinedKristal Scott of Wichita, Kan.,as the only two women to recordan 800 series on the tournamentlanes. Scott made headlines whenshe rolled an 816 series duringteam event.

“I would never have imaginedthat something like this couldhappen,” said Macpherson, a20-time PWBA champion. “Inever looked at the top scores, and I didn’t really think about itmuch until I started throwing alot of strikes. Being announcedas a champion is something ev-ery bowler thinks about back inthe squad room, and I’m just re-ally proud and excited.”

USBC Hall of Famer andthree-time Open Champion-ships titlist Steve Fehr of Cin-cinnati waited 24 years to findhis way back into the winner’scircle at the Open Champion-ships. Since his last title cameon the final day of team compe-tition in 1982, he was on theedge of his seat until the verylast team finished bowling Sun-day night.

Fehr helped BrowningPontiac to a 3,496 effort, thethird highest team total in tour-nament history. George GohaganIII led the way with 715 and wasfollowed by Ken Jessee (710),Jon Murph (710), Ken Abner(696) and Fehr (665).

“It was so hard to wait all ofthese weeks, but it was such athrill to sweat it out everyday,”said Fehr, who also won the 1994USBC Masters. “But no matterhow good your score is, it’s notsafe until it’s all over. Gettingclose or being in the hunt are al-ways fun, but nothing comparesto grabbing a title, especially af-ter all these years.”

In addition to Fehr’s returnto the top, USBC Director SamLantto of Eden Prairie, Minn.,led his Linds Lakers 1 team-mates to another Team All-Events crown, the same eventthe group won together at the2002 event in Billings, Mont.

The group finished its 45games with a 9,940 total thisyear. Lantto contributed 2,147and was followed by USBC Hallof Famer Todd Savoy (2,037),Charles Vashaw (1,952), JohnEiss (1,943) and Gary Green(1,861).

“This is just as special as thefirst time, and it’s even betterbecause it was the same fiveguys,” said Lantto, who leadsthe tournament’s lifetime aver-age list with 215.4. “This tour-nament has always been impor-tant to us, and when we go outthere we just want to representthe sport and each other the bestwe can. No matter how we bowlwe’re out there to have fun, butthere’s nothing like winning.”

In Regular All-Events andRegular Doubles, there werefirst-time winners. DaveMitchell of Farmington, Minn.,shot 780 in team, 757 in singlesand 652 in doubles to take homethe all-events title with 2,189,while Bobby Stives of El Paso,Texas, and Paul Yoder of Albu-querque, N.M., teamed up tograb the doubles crown with1,497.

“To be able to bowl that welland win a national title is amaz-ing, and I’m glad I can relax andfinally stop watching the scoreson the Internet everyday,”Mitchell said. “Everyone toldme my score would hold up, but

there were some big scores alongthe way and I got pretty ner-vous a few times.”

In the Classified Division,Torkelson Construction ofClarion, Iowa, held on to the topspot for nearly four months be-fore getting the call that its 2,878total was enough to claim theClassified Team title. TroySchultz led the way with 647and was followed by GregSchipull (599), Roger Haupt(578), Dustin Elston (545) andEric Douglass (509).

The Classified Singles titlewent to Shawn Fisher of Albu-querque, N.M., who shot 684,while David Clauss of Chicagoand Robert Tukker Jr. of MountProspect, Ill., combined to shoot1,248 for the Classified Doubleswin. Kirby Lomax of Gainesville,Ga., won Classified All-Eventswith 1,861.

To be eligible for competitionin the Classified Division, teamsmust have a combined averageof 900 or less, doubles teamsmust have a combined averageof 360 or less and a bowler mustenter at 180 or below for singlesand all-events.

“Even last year when we fin-ished eighth in team, I told themwe could definitely do better, andthis year we did,” Schultz said.“I never thought we could’veheld on for so long, and I reallycan’t put it into words quite yet.We got together yesterday andtalked about it, and I am just re-lieved that it’s over and we heldon.”

The 2006 Open Champion-ships began on Feb. 11 and com-petition continued from 7 a.m.until 2 a.m. for nearly fivemonths. During that time, morethan 63,000 bowlers on 12,606teams made their way to theAmerican Bank Center ExhibitHall for the second largest eventto be held outside of Reno, Nev.,and competed for more than$4.5 million in prize money. Nextyear, the Open Championshipsreturns to the National BowlingStadium in Reno and more than10,000 teams already are regis-tered.

LIFE BEGINS AT “80”Once you reach “80”

Everyone wants to carry your baggage, and help you up the steps.

If you forget your name or somebody else’s name,or an appointment, or your own telephone number,

or promise to be three places at the same time,or can’t remember how many grandchildren you have,

You need only explain that you are “80”.Being “80” is a lot better than being “70”.

At “70”People are mad at you for everything.

At “80” you have a perfect excuse. No matter what you do, if you act foolishly,

it’s your second childhood.Everybody is looking for symptoms of softening of the brain.

Being “70” is no fun at all.At that age, they expect you to retire to a house in Florida

And complain about your Arthritis, and you ask everybody to stop mumbling

Because you can’t understand them.(Actually, your hearing is about 50% gone.)

If you survive until you are “80”Everybody is surprised that you are still alive.

They treat you with respect, just for having lived so long.Actually they seemed surprised

that you can walk and talk sensibly. So please folks, try to make it to “80”,

It’s the best time of life.People forgive you for anything.

If you ask me,Life begins at “80”.

With Silver in their hair,Gold in their teeth,

Stones in their kidneys,Lead in their feet, and

I have become a little older since I saw you last,And a few changes have come into my life since then.
