Testimony of Hope But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an

answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

1Peter 3:15

Our hearts are with the little town of Sutherland Springs this week. It is hard to imagine the overwhelming loss of life for such a small community. We pray for their healing and recovery. We are saddened with how common news like this has become. It seems like we cannot go many weeks without hearing of shootings, violence, and murder of this kind.

I watched as a reporter was interviewing one woman from the church. The reporter asked how she and the other members of the church were doing after what they had been through. As she was being interviewed she started talking about her eternal hope, about heaven. She was not a preacher. She was just an ordinary Christian speaking of the hope that was within her. It was simple, beautiful, heartfelt testimony.

Maybe the world has given us an opportunity. Too many people are living on hopes (money, power, position) that are not able to offer much in the end. They do not have anything to say when evil, death, and destruction reveal themselves in our world. For all of human progress, our world is still a big mess in need of redemption. We need a hope and a life that is much bigger than ourselves.

The message of Jesus is much more than wisdom and morality. Jesus is more than an ethical teacher telling us how to be good people. The message of Jesus reveals that our world is under the power of sin and we need God to save us. Jesus did not just talk about salvation he became salvation for us. He died for our sins and rose to give us life. We are witnesses of what God is doing in our world, in us. We all have a testimony of hope that needs to be shared with those around us of what God has done and what he has promised. We do not need to be afraid of suffering or death. God is on the throne and salvation is near.
