LOOKING BACK ON 2012

Spoke up against school closures and funding cuts for important after-school programs and childcare.

Marched for peace on our streets along side with District 8 youth and their parents; as well as “Occupied Corners” to bring awareness to the unnecessary violence.

Stood with fast food workers and car washers who were demanding better treatment in the work place, regardless of legal status.

Volunteered in neighborhoods affected by Superstorm Sandy. •We delivered food to homebound in Chinatown. •Cleaned up around devastated homes on Staten Island.

•Bused supplies over to NYCHA developments and went door-to-door in Coney Island.

East Harlem’s Senior Pool Party was the launch of “senior hours” in 14 pools city-wide. This was after “senior hours” was first launched in Thomas Jefferson Park Pool as part of the Age Improvement District initiative by our office.

A comical name, but a serious campaign – There’s No Poop Fairy in East Harlem, promotes being responsible pet owners and respecting our neighborhood by cleaning up after our dogs.

The Upper West Side Enhanced Commercial District was created within the Zoning Text Amendment, protecting small business owners who are falling victim to large banks and chains that are occupying an increasingly extensive amount of ground floor space along the avenues.

I  was featured in the Educational Video Center’s powerful new documentary on Stop and Frisk. “Stop and Frisk: Life Under Suspicion” documents the criminalization of an entire generation of young men of color in NYC. Watch it here.

Seniors in East Harlem finally got to enjoy benches that I had the DOT install throughout the neighborhood.

I had the opportunity to be on a panel about Latinas in elected office at the 2012 BlogHer Convention. Watch a video about it here.

Stood in our hoodies to call for justice for Trayvon Martin and his family.

Laid 100 pairs of girls’ shoes on the steps of the Village Voice office, in protest of the backpage.com adult section.

Supported the 8,500 utility workers of America Local 1-2 that were locked out by Con Edison.

Marched silently on Fathers Day to end Stop and Frisk.

Held our Sixth Annual Teen Fair, a positive youth movement.

Celebrated my first Chinese New Year in East Harlem.
