A Word From Your MPOn 22 May this year you will get the chance to vote in the European Parliament Election. It is clear that ever more the issue which concerns many voters the most has been the European Parliament itself and the power it has in relation to the United Kingdom rather than the question of who will represent them in that Parliament. I along with my Party have always been clear that it is right to negotiate a fresh settlement in the EU that is better for Britain - and then put the result to the British people in an in-out referendum before the end of 2017. Before this takes place, we need to attempt to negotiate a new settlement that focuses on what matters to the people of Britain and Europe. Last year I voted to give the British public a say on Europe. The EU Referendum Bill should have given us the first vote on the EU in over 40 years, after a renegotiation for a new deal in the EU. Sadly Labour and the Liberal Democrats don’t want to give people a say.It has been nearly 40 years since the British people last had their say on Europe. In that time, so much has changed – the countries involved, the powers devolved, the benefits and costs of membership. People feel that the EU has been heading in a direction that they never signed up to.

This is why on April 10th 2014 I will be holding an event alongside Philip Bradbourn MEP & Councillor Wendy Thompson at the Tractor Shed at Bantock House to discuss Britain’s future relationship with Europe. We intend to listen intently to your views on negotiating a better deal for Britain in Europe and the importance of putting the negotiated terms to the British people in the form of an in-out referendum. We wish to reaffirm the consent of the British people in regard to Europe on issues including accountability of European decision makers, freedom of movement and the EU budget and the cost to the UK.
