“Now that Tewkes-bury-in-Bloom is in theRHS National Finals, weget invited to morethings, said John.
“Brian Reeve and Irecently attended aBritain in Bloom win-ners seminar in Sheffieldwhere we benefittedfrom meeting many ‘oldhands.’
“We attended a fewseminars which werereally useful. One onpromoting ourselves, one on appropriateplanting and one onorganising judging day.
“We came away reas-sured that we are on theright tracks.
“There are things weneed to do, such as
deepening our links withthe community - schoolsespecially.
“It is also vital that wefind more sponsors andobtain more supportfrom the local authori-ties: our impression wasthat we had less supportin this area than mostother leading bloomgroups.
“Above all we needto ensure that our judg-ing days are spectacu-larly good. We cameaway totally confidentthat with the help of thecommunity, we will putup a really good show-ing. Roll on the sum-mer!”
Tewkesbury can puton a fine display thisyear if local businessesare willing to help bysponsoring town centretubs and coronets. [email protected] or visit the websitewww. tewkesbury in-bloom.co.uk for details.

Where does a wise man build?“A wise man builds his house upon the rocks,” asthe saying goes. But it seems that’s not alwaysthe case in Alderton.
Footings have been dug at the edge of the villagefor a new housing development, to reveal a band ofsand just below the ground which hasn’t beenexposed for thousands of years. This reminds us thatthe land was once below the sea. Many sand extrac-tions once quarries operated in the area - the last ofthem closed in the 1990s." Alderton’s burning sands?

A FITTING FOUNDATIONDo any readers remember when shopping involved far more than filling a basket, entering a PIN num-ber and walking away?
Joyce Brooks Lingerie isa store that prides itselfon offering the samekind of service youwould have experiencedsixty years ago.
Here, owner PamThomas describes a typ-ical day in her shop:
“Today is Monday:it’s time to prepare aMother’s Day window, then plan for a FittingDay display and then toEaster.
“Our windows marchon throughout the year, challenging us to makepeople stop and stare, look in and discover thatour little independentstore is a treasure troveof lingerie fit for everyoccasion and everywoman.
“Today we have a fit-ting for a front-fasteningbra, followed by a dis-cussion on cotton v.thermal vests, thenanother with a bride tobe. Decisions, as always,on which style suits thedress - always a big con-sideration when buyinga bra for any occasion.
“Honeymoon lingerieand silk nightwearshown too.
“Phone calls to beanswered in between -another catalogue want-ed - must check our
stock list for Pyreneandressing gowns: anothertwenty minutes and theorders must go in.
“A customer comes infor a soft bra cup, agreesto try an underwired oneand that gets the vote -with matching briefs, ofcourse.
“Then the delicateissue of fitting a mastec-tomy bra followed by aswimsuit fitting - chosen- bright and fun for hol-idays and a plain, smartone for regular swim-ming locally.
“I take another lookat the window - weatherforecast is for a chillyweekend: better put in awarm nightdress; thelast time for wintergowns as the springstock is arriving andwith it, fresh ideas forthose little windows.”
Maybe there is moreto creating a great figurethan you think!" See Joyce Brooksadvert on page 17

Now the restoration ofthe former Girls’ HighSchool is under way, surely it is time torestore this splendidbuilding built c 1800 bythe wealthy wine mer-chant and distillerCharles Embury, whosedistillery occupied themodern beer garden ofthe Black Bear.
In the 19th century itwas known as MoffattHouse after the Scottishbirthplace of its owner,Rev. F. J. Scott, Vicar ofHoly Trinity.
This wealthy, rev-erend gentleman justhappened to be thegrandson of one killedthe same day as AdmiralNelson at Trafalgar: “asif by the signal, seven oreight ships opened a fireupon the Victory, of themost destructive andtrying kind.
Mr Scott, theAdmiral's Secretary, whilst conversing withCaptain Hardy (of “Kissme..” fame) was shotdead". Rev. Scott alsoowned the house nextdoor, known - for nowobvious reasons - as“Trafalgar House”.
The Scotts were fol-lowed by Town Clerk H.A. Badham until hisdeath in 1919, afterwhich it became a pri-vate Temperance Hotel.
In 1939 J. W. Graysuddenly died there. Hewas the brother ofBertie, living next doorat Northend House (laterpartially burned in
1946) and was the sonof the crooked BoroughSurveyor who embez-zled £3,800 in 1898 anddisappeared to SouthAfrica with his ill-gottengains. Perhaps anappropriate location forthe family’s nemesis?
In 1949 the hotel hada resident, who gainedfame as the last victim ofserial killer John Haig.He thought that he haddiscovered the perfectmethod of murder - bydissolving the body insulphuric acid.
He was wrong and hewas hanged!
In the 1960s it thehotel changed to theRiverside until 1996when it becameMontell’s Night Club. Now it is a decayingcorpse.
There once wererumours that the com-bined churches wouldturn it into a TemperanceYouth Club – that reallywould be the perfect sal-vation for this august, but neglected, historicbuilding.

This is a story setagainst the backgroundof Sicily in the SecondWorld War. It is also atale of the Mafia andthe lengths that organi-sation could take tolook after its own.
The book covers thelives of an EnglishN.C.O., a linguist withfluent Arabic, which isutilised when his corpsis in North Africabefore crossing theMediterranean to Sicily.
The Americans arerepresented by Ray, afoot soldier, who findshe survives Africa andonce in Italy and sepa-rated from his col-leagues, hides out inthe attic of the localprince's palace.
The prince and hisdaughter, who discov-ers Ray and aids hissolitude, have an estatemanager, ex-shepherd,Angilo who we firstmeet in the openingsequences of the bookin 1926. Angilo is usedby Ciro, the Mafia manwho disappears off toNew York leaving
behindhis wife and child.
It is Ciro's return asan American aide, which starts theSicilian and Mafiosoaction.
Against a back-ground of war, withsome excellent battlescenes described withgreat sensitive, theevents in Sicily esca-late. Ciro endeavouringto repossess his old lifeand discarded wife.
A lot happens in thisbook; some of whichwas, in part, superflu-ous to the main story, where the eventsunravel with suspense-ful action.
Adam Foulds is anaward-winning poet, and these qualities areself-evident in the wellwritten and unusualstory, set against thebackground and expe-riences of war. Readersmay recall Foulds earli-er novel, 'TheQuickening Maze'about the poet JohnClare.

GETTING SET FOR SPRINGWe are now coming to the end of the ‘quiet’ months in wildlife rehabilitation with spring just aroundthe corner, writes Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue.
For the past couple ofmonths, apart from hav-ing 180 hedgehogs tolook after, casualty num-bers have been very low, although in the wintermonths we receive morecall-outs at night to largemammals such as badg-ers, foxes and deer.
This is due to twomain reasons: 1) theseanimals are movingabout more because theshortage of food meansthey have to travel fur-ther afield to find it, and2) the nights are muchlonger so therefore thereare more hours of dark-ness for these mainlynocturnal mammals tobe active.
Things will, however, change dramatically overthe next few weeks andmonths with the warmerweather heralding thestart of the breeding sea-son for many species.
We are said to be anation of animal loversand on the whole I ampleased to say that thisis true, although we dosee some horrific casesof animal cruelty fromtime to time, includingsome involving wild ani-mals.
However, when itcomes to young wildlife,an act of compassion canoften be the wrong thingto do and, hard though itmay seem, you have tobe cruel to be kind. I amreferring to situations
when young mammalsor birds are seen alone, assumed to be orphaned, and are picked up andtaken into care when, ina majority of cases thisis not the best action forthe animal.
Our annual plea inthese situations is toleave well alone untilyou have sought advicefrom us or anotherwildlife centre.
Newly fledged birdswill spend a period oftime, sometimes severaldays, on the ground orin low bushes, exercis-ing their wings to buildup muscles and practic-ing the art of flyingbefore they take to the
skies full time, and dur-ing this time they willstill be fed by their par-ents and thereforeshould be left alone.
The parent bird(s)will only come down tofeed their young if theyfeel safe to do so, soplease give them space,
stay out of the garden asmuch as possible andkeep cats and dogs awaytoo.
Nesting season is oneof the times when it isimportant to put plentyof food out for the birdsas they will have plentyof mouths to feed andproviding food for theadults to give to theiryoung saves a lot of for-aging time and helps toensure the survival ofmore young.
The same is true ofbaby/young mammals, some of which can fre-quently be seen outalone but this doesn’tnecessarily mean youshould intervene.
Fox cubs can often beseen playing in the openwith their siblings and, although there is no signof the vixen, she will bethere somewhere, watching discreetlywhen humans arearound.
Deer fawns are left for
several hours, some-times for the whole day, while mum goes off toforage for food, so if youcome across a fawn lyingin long grass, nettles ortucked into a hedge, it isvery unlikely that itneeds help.
Leverets are oftenmistaken for rabbits but, unlike rabbits, they areborn fully-furred withtheir eyes open and arefully mobile from birth.Their ‘nest’, called aform, is not a burrow butis a depression in theground often in the mid-dle of a field, where theleverets will sit tightlywhile mum is away. Thisis perfectly normal andthey should not bepicked up.
The message is do nottouch or intervene untilyou have sought advicefrom a wildlife centre.Keep the number of yourmost local one to hand.

! Rural idyll: Grafton
Grafton is the kind of place that even the backroad passes by. A rural, farming community littlechanged in over 100 years, it is probably the least visited of all the Bredon Hill villages - but one worthseeking out. It is best accessed on foot from neighbouring Ashton-under-Hill.
IN TIMELESS GRAFTONPark your car with careon Ashton village streetnear St Barbara’s ParishChurch.
Walk through thechurchyard (1) and asyou enter a field beardiagonally right up theslope towards a hollowtree. Go over the stile toreach a lane, and turnleft along it (2).
After a short distanceyou will reach the smallhamlet of Paris. Look fora house called BredonSprings on your left: thiswas once the home of abotanist who discoveredthat many unusualplants would grow in hisgarden due to the warmwater springs here.
Walk on throughParis and follow the lanedown the slope. Justafter passing a housewith tennis courts at thebottom of its garden, bear right along the edgeof a field (3).
You will eventuallyemerge into an openfield: carry on straightalong the edge to cross afootbridge over a stream
(4) which, incidentally, forms the boundarybetween the GL20 andWR11 postcode areas.
Walk over the fieldtowards some cottagesand go through the farmgate next to them on to aroad (5). You have nowreached Grafton.
Walk ahead pastManor Farm and turnright into the villagestreet. Look our for asmall stone thatchedbuilding on your leftcalled Norman Cottage;centuries ago this was achapel of ease for themonastery at Beckford.
Walk to the end of thelane, which descends toa farm gate (7). Bear leftand walk downhill, passing some cottagesand farm buildings. When you reach theroad again (8), turn leftand retrace your steps topoint 3. From point 3,follow the waymarkersthrough a farm gate anddiagonally across thefield. Bear left at thefence and along the edgeto return to the church.

Confidence is a toolthat you can use inyour everyday life forall sorts of things. It iswhat helps you to man-age fears and becomemore able to do more ofthe things that reallymatter to you, writesclinical hypnotherapistand counsellor DavidSlater.
That self-confidence,remember, is just likeany other muscle thatyou have in your body inthat it grows andstrengthens in responseto the level of perform-ance required of it andthe energy put into it byyou. I believe it is one ofthose things whereeither you use it or youlose it.
This month I am out-lining a few ways inwhich you can makesure that confidencegrows :
1. Make sure you dosomething physical. Itmay be as simple as awalk or some gardeningor even going to the gymwhich, I know, isn't foreveryone. Physical activ-ity can help you to feelmentally great.
2. Look at a successyou have experiencedand give yourself fullcredit for your part in it.Recognising your ownachievements is not big-headed. It can actuallybe healthy.
3. Make sure that youhave total clarity aboutthe things that reallymatter to you. If they arenot in your life, now isthe time to start intro-ducing them.
4. Do one thing eachday that makes yousmile (on the outside or
the inside).5. Stop playing differ-
ent roles and contort-ing yourself so that youfit into boxes based onwhat you think peopleexpect you to act like. Beyourself!
6. Learn to stop your-self every time that youtell yourself that youcan't have, won't get oraren't good enough toget what you want.
7. Confidence some-times means admittingthat you are wrong -always be ready to holdyour hands up and beprepared to change yourmind/direction becauseyou see the change isright.
8. Don't feel like youhave to do everythingyourself - sometimes themost confident and con-structive thing to do is toask for help.
9. Don't get demoti-vated or disheartenedwhen you get, aftersome struggle, to 90%with something that youare working on. Keep ongoing because you willsee that it is in the last10% where the magichappens.
10. Are you shy withnew people? That is real-ly not the problem thatyou have been thinkingit is. Stop thinking thatyou are a lesser personbecause you are shy. The
more you think about itthe worse it gets. So, think about your thoughts and rememberhow easy it is to be whatyou think.
11. Make a plan to dosomething then makedeliberate choices to fol-
low through on the wayto achieving it. Progress, however small, givesyou important self-rein-forcement.
12. Look around youat the people that yourespect who seem confi-dent. Don't try to copy
them! See if you canidentify what it is thatthey do differently thatconveys confidence andsee what you can learnfrom that.

Wayne Phillips, a spe-cialist in family law atDF Legal, said the falsebeliefs means followingrelationship break-upssome people are facing
financial hardship.“It is a desperate situ-
ation, and in the wake ofSt Valentine’s, wherecouples will be makingcommitments, we feelthis myth has to be dis-pelled,” said Mr Phillips, whose firm are based onthe High Street.
“This fantasy aboutcommon-law rights
where people believethat living together for aperiod of time providesrights in the eyes of thelaw is incredibly harm-ful,” he warned.
He added that num-bers of couples who co-habit has hit a recordhigh in Britain of sixmillion, with a greatnumber having no
intention to make theirrelationship more legallybinding through eithermarriage or entering acivil partnership.
“If a couple move intogether and one hasequity in the home, theperson who has movedin will have no legalrights if they leaveunless they can provethey have financiallycontributed to theupkeep of the home,”added Mr Phillips.
He advised visiting alawyer to get a co-habi-tation agreement drawnup early on is a sensiblestep, or even make awill.
“From the momentwhen couples commit toeach other they have totalk about the financialimplications,” he added.“The law can protect, butit means couples need tocommunicate aboutuncomfortable possibili-ties. We’ve seen so manypeople left high and dryand financially in a messbecause they failed tohave a legal safety net.”
“This myth makeslives so miserable andmany have been affectedby it,” he said. “As solic-itors who have seen theramifications it is ourresponsibility to dispelthis before it wrecks anymore lives.”

The neighbourhoodpolicing team haveattended various com-munity events with vari-ous items to make youhome, outbuildings andbicycles more secure.
Tewkesbury PoliceCommunity SupportOfficers have been sell-ing shed alarms, win-dow locks, heavy duty Dlocks for pedal cycles aswell as many other use-ful security products.
If you are hosting anevent and would like amember of the neigh-bourhood team to comealong, please [email protected] andhe will be pleased tohelp.
This initiative hasbeen set up with theassistance of theGloucestershire Consta-bulary crime reductionofficers.
Again I have beenreviewing our recentcrime trends and wehave had a number ofthefts from motor vehi-
cles. There have been two
main groups vans wheretools have been takenand cars parked at local
beauty spots wherewalkers leavetheir vehicles prior togoing for a walk.
Firstly try not to leaveexpensive power tools inyour van at all ,the nextbest thing is to getsecure tool chest whichis bolted to the floor.
Next ensure that thelocks are adequate and ifthey are not upgradethem.
Think about whereyou park: is it possible to
back up against a build-ing so the rear doorscannot be opened?
Importantly, makesure your insurancecover is adequate tocover the contentsshould the worst hap-pen not forgetting ittakes valuable time toreplace specialist itemswhich may lose youvaluable work.
When leaving a vehi-cle at a beauty spot, onegolden rule is that if youdo not need somethingfor your walk, leave it athome. If you do, thenmake sure valuableitems are placed out ofsight. But don’t put yourhandbag in the bootwhen you get there -thieves may be watchingyou and as soon as youare out of sight they willstrike.
To finish off, can I askthat if you do become avictim of crime, pleasereport it
