Course DescriptionsTesting the
WatersLife on Earth requires access to clean water, and as populations grow, the
demand for water increases. Youth participating in this unit become water resource engineers as they use the steps of the Engineering Design Process to
design creative ways to reuse water.
Animation Discovery
What do you get when you combine video production fun with stop-motion an-imation? Animation Discovery. Using technology and award-winning software,
learn to bring inanimate objects to life, just like they do in the movies!
Go Fish Youth will learn about important factors to keep in mind when designing pros-thetic devices as they engineer a model leg for an elephant and a model beak for an eagle. They will then learn the story of Winter, a dolphin with a prosthet-ic tail. This will help set the context for their final design challenge, designing a model prosthetic device for a fish. Finally, youth will have a chance to develop
the characteristics of their fish and make an exhibit for visitors.
Cartooning: DIY Comic Book
Create your very own comic book! We provide the cartooning instruction and you fill in the story, dialogue and scenery. Cartoonists learn all the tricks of the trade from a master cartoonist via instructional, then develop a unique comic book by adding their own elements and designs. Students add new characters
each session and see how their stories take shape.
Don't Runoff When it rains, it pours—and when water can't soak through pavement, rain collects pollution that washes into rivers, lakes, and oceans. Use your
environmental engineering skills to redesign a city and control stormwater runoff.
Modern Art Learn about artists who use abstraction to communicate their feelings and ideas. Students will explore Salvador Dali’s transformations of realistic figures, Charles Demuth’s precisionist style, and Georgia O’Keeffe’s nature abstractions.
Other artists and projects include sculpting Rodinesque clay figures, collaborating on creating historical murals based on the style of Diego Rivera and painting decadent deserts after learning about the modern painter Wayne
Thiebaud.
Food for Thought
Ever wonder how ice cream gets to be so creamy and delicious? Find out for yourself as you engineer a process for making ice cream.
Art Tells A Story Learn about how artists tell stories through art. Students learn to analyze clues in an artwork to interpret the message of the artist. They see how jagged lines can make a seascape threatening and how color can set the mood in a land-
scape. Students master techniques such as drawing contour figures, employing Georges Seurat-style pointillism, printing designs inspired by Polynesian tapa
cloths and creating action drip paintings in the style of Jackson Pollock.
It's In the Bag Plants and animals have amazing ways of protecting and defending themselves, which can inspire engineers to design new technologies. Youth participating in this unit will become materials engineers as they use the Engineering Design
Process to design bioinspired gear that meets clients’ needs.
Perspective In Art
Learn the techniques and styles of the masters. Practice perspective, highlighting, shading and 3-D perspectives while also studying famous works of art by Paul Cezanne, Johannes Vermeer, Joan Miro, Edgar
Degas and more masters of perspective.
Put a Lid on It When you bike, board, or play ball, you wear a helmet. But do you know how helmets work? Use biomechanical engineering to design your own helmet for a
crash-test dummy.
Tales of Oceania Travel the globe through the world of theater. Tales of Oceania centers on three folktales from Oceania which is the region of the world that encompasses Aus-tralia and New Zealand. In addition to a staged play, the final presentation will
include a celebration of theater games, exercises and techniques.
Bloxels Video Game Design
Playing games is fun. But, designing one and challenging your friends is even better! In this course, students use Bloxels to build, customize and play their video games that they design. By experimenting with game mechanics and digital coding, game designers discover new perspective in an arcade-style
world.
Much Ado About
Shakespeare
Welcome to the lyrical and literary world of William Shakespeare. Our course is an overview of Shakespearean plays taught through excerpts and monologues
from several of the Bard's classic works. Young actors experiment with improvi-sation, drama games and develop stage presence while taking on some of
Shakespeare's most famous characters. We culminate with ashowcase, performing our favorite pieces and games.
Coding With Ozobots
Ozobots robots are tiny, but powerful! Students love how they follow colored lines, spin, flash lights, and dance. Math and science concepts are explored as students control Ozobot movements by drawing colored lines on paper, using simple apps or with OzoBlockly, a programming language that snaps together
like puzzle pieces.
Fitness & Fun CHAMPIONS® fitness program is a comprehensive fitness program based on scientific principles and techniques designed to improve gross motor skills,
flexibility, posture, strength, balance and coordination. The mission is to encourage a lifestyle of regular physical activity and healthy choices. High
energy games and activities provide a lot of fun, and a needed physical outlet after a day of creative mental exercises!
