TEXAS PARKS AND WILDLIFE OFFERING STATE PARK YOUTH PASSMichelle Haggerty, [email protected] is info on how to obtain and use the State Park Annual Youth Pass. This is intended for organizations whose primary purpose is to serve youth. The following info will help you understand how the pass works and some of the changes that have been made to open up this resource to be utilized by more youth groups. 1. The pass can now be purchased by any

non-profit that is a 501c-3 that serves youth. (This has changed in the past few years. It had been only open to scouting groups in the past. ) This is a positive change to increase access

to parks by all non-profits that serve youth.

2. Rather than being issued at the state parks which sometimes are challenging to get to if you are in an urban community, they are now offered through TPWD headquarters and sent out to the organizations.

3. Youth ages 13-17 and their adult chaperones, councilors or youth program team members are also covered by the pass when attending the youth trip. The ratio of child to adult must not exceed 50% adults on the trip.

4. If you are taking a youth group to a park and considering doing a service project, always contact the state park manager or interpreter to find out how they can assist with the project.

5. For more information visit- http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdforms/media/pwd_1338_p4000_youth_group_annual_entrance_pass_application_packet.pdf

These are some great changes that are designed to help get more kids into nature and enjoying their public lands.

FEMA IS LOOKING FOR OUTSTANDING 4-H MEMBERS TO APPLY FOR YOUTH PREPAREDNESS COUNCILThe U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is seeking nominations for participants in the Agency’s Youth Preparedness Council (YPC). The Youth Preparedness Council provides an opportunity for young leaders to serve as a member of a distinguished national council; to complete a youth preparedness project of their choosing; to learn about youth disaster preparedness from the leadership at FEMA and other national organizations dedicated to youth preparedness; to voice their opinions, experiences, and share innovative ideas and solutions; and to participate in the Youth Preparedness Council Summit where the council meets with emergency management leadership to discuss steps to strengthen the nation’s resiliency against all types of disasters. Participants are expected to represent the youth perspective on emergency preparedness and relay information within their communities. Each council member is expected to develop and complete one preparedness-related project specific to his/her region and interests. In addition to attending the Summit in the summer of 2013, council members will potentially participate in national, regional, state, tribal and local preparedness meetings

and present their work. It is expected that members will meet with FEMA on a regular basis via conference call to provide ongoing input on strategies, initiatives and projects throughout the duration of their term. Anyone between the ages of 12 and 17, who is engaged in individual and community preparedness, is encouraged to apply or be nominated to serve on the Youth Preparedness Council. An individual may apply on his/her own behalf, or can be nominated by an adult familiar with his/her youth preparedness activities. Individuals interested in applying must submit a completed application form, a narrative, and a letter of recommendation. The letter of recommendation can be from any adult, including a parent, guardian, community first responder, or teacher. Applications that do not include a letter of recommendation will not be reviewed. Individuals interested in nominating a young leader to the council should complete the application form and narrative, but a letter of recommendation is not mandatory. Specific information about completing and submitting the application and attachments can be found on the application. All applications and supporting materials must be received no later than 11:59 E.D.T. on April 19, 2013 in order to be eligible. Council members will be selected based on vacancies and announced in May 2013. Once selected, members serve on the Council for one year, with the option to extend for an additional year, based on a formal request by FEMA. For more information about the Youth Preparedness Council and FEMA’s work on youth preparedness, and to access the application materials, please visit www.ready.gov/youth-preparedness. If you have any further questions, please contact Citizen Corps at (202) 786-9550 or [email protected] .

4-HMILITARY UPDATES

EL PASOANS FIGHTING HUNGERRecently the El Paso Food Bank moved to a new location. The new location offers more room and better facilities to serve the community. As you can imagine, moving a program like this is a project in itself. Luckily they had the help of some pretty awesome volunteers. Youth from Milam Youth Activities Complex on Ft. Bliss stepped up and offered their services.

These outstanding 4-H/OMK youth got up early and made it to the center by 8am. They got on a bus and drove to the new location where they sorted, cleaned and inventoried every single item the center had. Each item was checked for its expiration date and wiped down. This was no easy task but they all achieved their goal with a smile on their face.

Not only have these young people collected items for the center but they have now gone a step beyond with helping them get organized and ready to serve the needy in their community a lot faster. They have also assisted the food bank in prepping packages of food to be distributed to needy families and a meal for the homeless.

Giving back to the community is sometimes hard work but our outstanding 4-Hers and OMK Youth Board members met the challenge head on and showed military youth care about their community.

TEEN EXTREME SPRING BREAK CAMPThe Montague Youth Center, Fort Hood Texas, hosted the 2013 CYSS Teen Extreme Spring Break Camp. Texas Military 4-H Tech Wizards provided two programs for the camp on Wednesday, March 13, Lego Robotics and Water Awareness.

The Lego Robotics program was led by Annie May, 4-H Program Assistant – Tech Wizards. The youth built NXT projects using step-by-step instruction, which allowed the youth to become familiar with building and using the NXT kits. Some projects that the youth completed were catapults, bumper car, ball hunter, flipping

gymnast, rattlesnake, and many more. Youth were able to learn the basics and see a finished Lego Robotics project.

Todd Strait with the Clearwater Underground Water Conservation District provided Water Awareness program. The program was focused on education the youth about aquifers, water supply in Bell County as well as water conservation. This was a great opportunity for the youth to hear about where their water comes from and what they can do to help conserve the supply.

My time at National 4-H Congress made me reflect on how great it is to serve others and how important it is, to be a part of something bigger than myself! Being

a part of 4-H, the largest youth organization in the world, has challenged me as an individual and as a productive citizen in our society and as I said before, my time spent at the 2011 and 2012 National 4-H Congress “put the icing on the cake” for my 4-H career and I wouldn’t trade the things that I learned or the people that I met for the world. I would highly recommend National 4-H Congress to anyone, it is one of those things that you will never regret and remember forever!
