Burton enters his fourth season as head coach. He is the eighth coach in program history. The Lions are coming off of a 20-9 season, their second consecutive winning season. It was the second most wins in a season in program history. The team lost in the first round of the LSC Tournament.

Burton’s 50 wins and .581 winning percentage are both program highs for a coach during their first three seasons. He has the fourth most wins by a coach in program history and has the highest winning percentage of any coach in program history.

The Lions went 16-13 in Burton’s second season, their first winning season since the 2008-09 season. The team lost in the first round of the LSC Tournament.

Burton led the Lions to a 14-14 season in his first year as coach, becoming the first coach in program history to finish the season at .500 or better in their first season. The team advanced to the second round of the LSC Tournament.

During his tenure, 10 of his players have received All-Conference honors. Three of his players have earned All-Defensive team honors. Under his tutelage, Princess Davis was named LSC Freshman of the Year in 2014-15 and earned Freshman All-American honors from the WDIIB. Jenna Price was named Freshman of the Year in 2016-17.

Burton began his coaching career at A&M-Commerce. He was an assistant coach for the men’s team under head coach Sam Walker, working in recruiting. The team had a 68-43 record during his four seasons and Burton helped recruit three All-American selections, two LSC Newcomers of the Year, seven All-Conference players and two LSC Freshman of the Year. He was promoted to associate head coach in his third season and held that position for two years. The team went 37-17 in those two years.

Burton then went on to be an assistant coach at Texas State for two years before taking a head coaching position at McKinney Boyd High School. He coached there one season before taking the position as women’s head basketball coach at Texas A&M-Commerce in 2014.

Burton received his BA in Business Administration and Management from Austin College in 2007. He obtained his MBA in the same field from A&M-Commerce in 2009.

About the Series

Team Notes

This is the 65th meeting between the programs in their respective histories, with Midwestern State holding a commanding 42-22 series lead. The Lions have had success against MSU recently, winning their last four contests against the Mustangs, including their last two in Wichita Falls.

In their last meeting in Wichita Falls, Jenna Price scored her career- high 19 points while Artaejah Gay had 15 points and Khala Riley had 11 points. The Lions forced 24 turnovers in the game and converted them into 23 points. No team won a quarter by more than three points. Price hit two late free throws to seal the Lion win.

The Mustangs went on to finish their season at 8-18 with a 5-15 conference record, missing the conference tournament for the second consecutive season. Whitney Taylor was named Honorable Mention All-Conference and returns for her senior season.

MSU defeated Tarleton State to open up conference play on Thursday.

About the Mustangs• MSU leads the LSC in offensive rebounds and is second overall in rebounds in the conference.

• The Mustangs are third in scoring margin, fourth in field goal defense, third in three-point defense, and third in assist-to-turnover ratio.

• MSU is second to last in the LSC in three-point percentage, eighth in field goal percentage, last in free throw percentage and second to last in steals per game.

Spreading the Wealth• Six different Lions have scored in double figures in games this season and five different players have led the team in scoring.

• Courtney Fields had a career-high 29 points against LeTourneau. She was 9-of-10 from three, tying an NCAA DII record for most threes made in a row with nine and the most threes in a game this season in DII.

• Brianna Wise has three different 20+ point games, including a career-high 26 against Cameron. Artaejah Gay also scored 20 points against LETU.

• Princess Davis, Melanie Ransom and Jenna Price have all also scored in double figures. Price and Ransom also have had double-digit rebounding games. Price had a double-double against Cameron.

• Brianna Wise is seventh in the LSC in assists per game. Princess Davis is 15th. Wise is third in assist-to-turnover ratio.

Lion Rankings• The Lions lead the LSC in free throws made (120) and free throws attempts (167). The Lions are top-30 in both categories in all of DII.

• The Lions are second in the LSC in blocks per game, turnover margin, defensive rebounds and free throw percentage and third in scoring offense.
