Philanthropy is an Investment

Many understand that being a public university does not imply that all costs associated with operating and attending Texas A&M Univer-sity-Corpus Christi are borne by the State

of Texas. At the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation we’ve moved many grateful steps forward with the increase in donors who have made substantial gifts to support the University for funding scholarships, fellowships, faculty chairs and professor-ships, research operations, and facilities.

Such gifts are investments. Just as an individual makes a personal financial investment in the hope of receiving a strong monetary return on those funds, investments toward Texas A&M-Corpus Christi bring forth strengths in quality and opportunity. The returns are both tangible and intangible, and all support the well-being of the University’s growing position as a higher education leader.

With $38 million in net assets at the close of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2007, these assets can be consid-ered quite significant. There is a duty, therefore, that comes with Foundation leadership. We must ensure that the funds entrusted to us stay safe and sound, and that the investment of these funds will best support the needs of the University. This trust creates commitment.

We are aware of the stewardship the Foundation must provide to donors. Our board members are personally committed to the mission of the Foundation. Over the past several months the Foundation has undergone the restructuring of several bylaws and made changes to its governance structure. These positive changes have concentrated our focus toward heightening fundraising efforts for benefiting the University, where those who serve on the board also serve in creating donor outreach opportunities.

Where does the Foundation see the greatest needs for support? As a part-ner with the University we know well that faculty form the backbone of the institution. Their professional strengths and academic expertise shape the quality of programs and the outcomes of graduates. Private gifts that support faculty, both directly and indirectly as in research funding, facilities, chairs and professorships, increase the level of educational quality campuswide.

We also must ensure that the best and brightest students have every available opportunity to attend Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Scholarships serve as both a reward for academic merit and a financial incentive to attend the Univer-sity. The focus on increasing scholarship endowments moves the University upward in the overall academic quality of the student body and makes Texas A&M-Corpus Christi more globally attractive. Faculty, in turn, challenge these bright-minded students and create academically robust classrooms and laboratories.

What’s ahead in these next few years? As Texas A&M-Corpus Christi increases in enrollment and expands its number of programs to meet the demands of the market, donors become ever more crucial. The recent acquisition of new land resources for the University paves the way for expansion. More scholarship endowments, more faculty support, more program funds and more facilities are those steps toward greatness. The spirit of philanthropy within all of us has its rewards. It’s your university; it’s your investment.

Al Jones, PresidentTexas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation

60 Yearsand a BrighterFuture

As the University celebrates its 60th birthday, we begin an exciting new era, an epoch when the momentum of excellence, expansion and engage-ment is raising the University to even greater

prominence at a time when higher education has become essential to quality of life.

The Island University has experienced phenomenal growth since opening its doors in 1947 as a small Baptist college. More than 25 years later, the University of Corpus Christi became an upper-level institution offering courses at the junior, senior, and gradu-ate levels with an initial enrollment of 969 students. Today, the University, which joined the Texas A&M University System in 1989, has around 8,500 students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in five colleges, a giant step forward but just a glimpse into what the future holds.

In the last year, construction has begun on both a new $21 million wellness center for students and employees and a $45 million, 140,000-square-foot building that will be home to the College of Nursing and Health Sciences with space for kinesiology and wellness activities. As a result of the new construction and increased enrollment, the University is growing beyond the perimeters of Ward Island and must maximize its use of space to facilitate its continued expansion.

Once again, the Corpus Christi community has assured the University’s continued growth, this time by providing 156 acres of city land off Ennis Joslin Road for future expan-sion. However, as the campus expands, the University will preserve its unique setting by keeping academic buildings on the island while relocating a portion of administrative and support facilities to the new location.

To sustain this growth, the University must support and expand existing programs with the needed faculty and staff, facilities and capital resources. In addition

to constructing more buildings, the University is attracting outstanding scholars to teach and conduct research for under-graduate and graduate programs with the goal of reaching doctoral comprehensive status.

With our commitment to excellence, engagement and expan-sion, the University is positioning itself for a role as a doctoral comprehensive institution that is recognized as the university of choice in South Texas. This goal can only be achieved by engaged faculty and staff, well-prepared and enlightened students, and generous alumni and benefactors.

For 60 years, the University and the Corpus Christi community have worked hand-in-hand to build a first-class institution offering a top-rate education. With that goal achieved, A&M-Corpus Christi stands poised for even greater accomplishments in the coming years.

A Legacy of Wellness

More than 40 years after Jack Dugan left the assembly line at the Ford automobile plant in Lima, Ohio, he can still hear his father’s advice echoing in his mind.

“If you want to go to college, get a scholarship,” said his dad, a hard-worker whose strong Christian values guided the close-knit, middle-class family.

Young Dugan took those words to heart. Lean and athleti-cally strong, the 6-foot-5-inch Dugan enrolled at St. Bene-dict’s College near Kansas City on a basketball scholarship, a move that put him on the road to medical school and a collision course with cupid.

It was during a road game at Central State College that the future Mrs. Jack Dugan, a freshman at the Oklahoma school, saw the handsome young man on the opposing team who would win her heart. They fell in love and married, forming a partnership that would touch the lives of countless others, including future Texas A&M Univer-sity-Corpus Christi students who had not yet been born.

After earning his medical degree from Creighton Univer-sity, Dugan and “Susie” left the cold Midwest for the warmer climes of South Texas. Dugan studied eye surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and four years later the couple moved to Corpus Christi which became their home until Susie’s death from cancer. To honor his wife’s memory, Dugan drew inspiration from the words of his father, creating the Susan Dugan Memo-rial Scholarship Endowment. It was a fitting tribute to “Susie,” a teacher with a passion for higher education.

“I believe this scholarship serves Susan’s memory well,” says Dugan. “Endowed scholarships are gifts that just keep on giving and my family believes there is no better investment than to invest in students’ lives.”

Dugan again honored his late wife’s memory by donating $1 million to the Island University to seed construction of a $21 million fitness and wellness center. In March 2007, ground was broken for the “Dr. Jack and Susie Dugan Wellness Center” which is scheduled to open in spring 2009.

“Throughout my life I’ve been helped by family, friends and teachers, and I want to create opportunities to help others,” says Dugan. “Why wellness? I’m in medicine, and I’ve played basketball, so athletics and health are high priorities for the Dugan family. The wellness center is a perfect fit for us.”

In reflection, Dugan recalls that when he and “Susie” moved to Corpus Christi he wasn’t sure he’d made the best choice. However, throughout a quarter-century of dramatic change, life in the city has continued to get better, a fact for which he gives much of the credit to the University.

“Corpus Christi has been good to the Dugan family,” he says. “The strength of the community continually improves, and A&M-Corpus Christi has been instrumental in it all.”

MeasuringUp

Whether he’s hip-deep in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico or standing atop a mountain in the Big Bend, Stacey Lyle is taking the measure of Texas.

Lyle, an assistant professor of computing and mathematical sciences, is a specialist in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) who, along with other scientists in the Conrad Blucher Institute for Surveying and Science, is remapping elevations across the Lone Star State as part of the Texas Height Modern-ization Project. While CBI Director Gary Jeffress concentrates on the states 600 shorelines, Lyle, who has also performed extensive hydrographic surveying and mapping of the Gulf of Mexico, is measuring the peaks of the Guadalupe and Davis Mountains more than 7,000 feet above sea level.

Page 11: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Foundation Report 2007

As part of this project we’re determining the 10 high-est elevations in Texas,” says Lyle. “Mountains are tied to tectonic plates and by measuring and tracking their upward flow with the downward slide of the coastal plate we can get a good indication of future events.”

Although Lyle enjoys the challenges of working outdoors, he also excels in the laboratory where he has developed new surveying and mapping techniques for NASA’s Sten-nis Space Center. His method uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to quickly collect digital imagery from video cameras aboard locally launched rockets that can record rare or episodic events and gather image data to guide decisions on a variety of concerns ranging from the treat-ment of agricultural fields to fighting wildfires.

“Using a video camera with an integrated GPS we can go to geo-reference images by latitude and longitude and overlay the information into ‘Google Earth’ on the fly,” explains Lyle. “In the case of wildfires like the ones that have plagued California, a thermal camera can be used to guide tankers to the hottest spots for them to drop their payloads of water.”

Closer to home, Lyle recently worked with several graduate students to create an assortment of maps of South Guth Park and land near the adjacent water treatment facility, the proposed site for expansion of the University which is rapidly growing too large for its 240-acre Ward Island campus. Although the team has produced topographic, boundary-line, flood-plain and other maps for presentation to A&M System officials and the Corpus Christi City Council, he stresses that it is his job to identify the high and low areas of the site, not to determine what should be built and where.

Lyle, who received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and master’s in computer science from Southern Polytechnic State University in Georgia, earned his doctorate in geog-raphy from the University of Georgia. He enjoys working with students who, he says, are in high demand due to the shortage created by the imminent retirement of many baby-boomer surveyors.

“Surveyors are not really affected by the economy because high-paying jobs are plentiful in the oil and gas industry,” he tells his charges. “And it’s always interesting. One minute you can be working with a $40,000 high-tech instrument and the next minute you’re jumping over a rattlesnake.”

For Megan Hoch, it’s all about the environment. From caring for animals to conserving energy, her daily routine revolves around her passion for preserving the planet and ensuring its quality of life.

Following graduation from King High School in Corpus Christi, Megan, 22, pondered attending college away from home, but was attracted by the Island University’s environmental science program. By attending Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Megan reasoned, she could stay close to her family and also take advantage of the University’s master’s program, if she so chooses. Today, she knows she made the right decision.

“I’d heard good things about the University and its envi-ronmental science program and decided to enroll,” she says. “People here are on my level, and I really like that. The open atmosphere on campus has allowed me to connect with other students and generate ideas.”

While at A&M-Corpus Christi, Megan, who is on schedule to graduate this spring, has stayed on top of her studies, maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. Her hard work has also paid off in financial aid. She is a two-time recipient of the Arthur F. Lobe Scholarship Endowment, earning her a total of $18,000 for school.

But even while juggling 15 semester hours and two jobs, Megan also makes time for what she cares about most, the outdoors. She rides her bike and surfs at every oppor-tunity and, following graduation, she plans to do public outreach work dealing with energy, conservation and environmental issues.

Megan, who in summer 2006 completed a molecular biology internship at the University of California at Berkeley, started working as a volunteer in the environmental microbiology lab at A&M-Corpus Christi last August and is now a paid part-time employee. Through the Texas Beach Watch program,

where water samples from 55 area beach stations are monitored, Megan is gaining experience in the latest Envi-ronmental Protection Agency techniques in quality control. Off campus, Megan regularly collects and recycles plastics, paper and glass, even though there is no recycling program at her apartment.

“Having the right role models, including a nature-loving grandmother and a dad who has always recycled, has shaped my personal philosophy,” she admits. “I consider the world my community, so I just want to take care of the whole. I want everybody to be involved.”

Besides protecting the planet, Megan is also an animal lover. For the past year, she has worked as a boarding attendantat Oso Creek Animal Hospital where she feeds and walks pets and cleans their beds. Megan owns two ferrets and recently rescued Pookie, a black lab mix from the Gulf Coast Humane Society.

“The most important thing in my life is that I’m a strict vegetarian,” Megan says. “For the environment, for my health and for the animals, I chose to abstain from any animal products. It’s a pretty big part of my life.”
