FY2017-2018

We’re just the good guys in blue suits. Kids are the real royalty.

Kids can’t always speak for themselves,so The Texas Cavaliers have picked upthe mantle, dedicating our fundraisingefforts to empowering, healing, educat-ing, protecting, advocating and bringinghope to children. We treat them likeroyalty, and we all have fun along theway. That’s what The Texas CavaliersRiver Parade, which donates 100% ofits net proceeds to The Texas CavaliersCharitable Foundation, is all about:celebrating and raising money tohelp kids. The Texas Cavaliers kings and royalcourts have been around since 1926,infusing our city with the party spiritthat has made San Antonio one of ourcountry’s most popular spots for visitors

(and residents, too!). Our original mission92 years ago was to honor the memoryof the brave heroes who gave their livesat the Alamo, and to foster relationshipswith the U.S. military. In 1989, we expanded our mission andintensified our impact in a new way whenwe formed The Texas Cavaliers CharitableFoundation. Our spirit of fun has evolved… and we have become an instrument ofpositive change for the children in ourcommunity. Last year, we exceeded the$1 million mark in grants to children’scharities. This year, we gave $1.2 millionto 61 children’s causes that will influenceand transform life for thousands ofchildren in our community today andinto the future.

It’s all about the kids.(Okay, it’s also about the fun.)

It was a remarkablehonor to serve asKing Antonio XCVIand to see firsthandthe incredible signifi-cance of the work

we do. We were able to contribute $1.2million in total gifts to the 61 charities weselected, and I can say with certainty thatit made a difference to the recipients. For many organizations, our gifts werea game changer, and without them, manygoals could not have been met. Thoseof us who were fortunate enough tomake these visits to the charities andfacilitate the distribution of these fundswould agree that it was humbling, andthe expressions of gratitude wereoverwhelming. The experience wasundoubtedly worth the hard work of our membership over the past year. Our contributions go beyond their

considerable monetary influence, as ourgifts also raise community visibility forour recipients, further exposing them toother future donors, volunteers andsupport. The weight of this componentmay not be as quantifiable, but it is noless impactful. Several of the organiza-tions' representatives told us theyreceived unexpected phone calls ande-mails of support after people saw theircharities represented on our River Paradefloats. With a live Parade audienceof more than 250,000, and a recordaudience watching on TV, that’s a lotof free and affirming exposure! The people behind these extraordinary

organizations truly inspired us. We wereable to spend time with the selflessdirectors, board members and staffs of

these non-profits and we were touchedby the joy we saw on the faces of thechildren who benefit from their unwaver-ing effort. When we visited hospitals, wespoke with children who were able toforget, for just a few moments, that theywere struggling with things far morecomplicated than any Fiesta schedule.Excited by a visit from a King and hisentourage, they were simply childrencapturing a memory. These are themoments we valued the most. As King, I had the privilege of being the

face of The Texas Cavaliers, but the realheroes are the 600+ Cavaliers whocontributed in countless ways to makeThe River Parade and Fiesta 2018 aresounding success. You make it possiblefor us to award these meaningful grantsand to create these special experiencesfor our charities. My fellow Cavaliers, both visible and behind the scenes, werethe positive force of Fiesta and the spiritand generosity of San Antonio that theKing and his court represent. While we arrive at our visits around the

city in a flurry of pomp and circumstancethat’s undeniably fun, the real message is the charitable work that supports SanAntonio children and charities. The wholepackage – the boundless Fiesta joy andthe charitable outcome – make our city abetter place to live. Thanks to all whomake this possible – The Texas Cavaliers, our families, donors and sponsors, thepatrons who buy tickets and celebratewith us, and all whose efforts contributeto The Texas Cavaliers River Parade. Wetruly can't do this without you.

I extend myappreciation toeach of you whohave entrustedyour charitableinvestments to us.

Your confidence makes us work evenharder to ensure that we exceed thehighest standards of integrity in vettingthe charities and managing the funds wehave been chosen to steward. It is a particular honor to have servedas President at a time when our corpusmore than doubled. This milestone wasmade possible by a combination ofeconomic factors – the ongoing andsuccessful “Campaign for Children”Endowment Fund; growth in ourinvestment returns; and an increasein the number of donors giving to theFoundation. Our total assets soaredfrom $3.5 million to $7.1 million in thisFY 2017-2018, enabling us to give thelargest gift in our history – $561,000 – to The Children’s Hospital of SanAntonio Foundation. Giving to The Texas Cavaliers CharitableFoundation makes sense. The Texas Cavaliers have a big heart forchildren … and children’s hearts. Whenwe discovered the critical advancementsunderway in pediatric cardiac care atThe Children’s Hospital of San Antonio(CH of SA), we knew we had found theideal charity to feature this year. It iswith great confidence in their enduringcommitment to children’s health that weawarded The Children’s Hospital of SanAntonio Foundation the largest grant inour history – $561,000 – to support thenew pediatric cardiology unit. And wethank Susan Naylor and the Will SmithFoundation whose matching grantboosted the magnitude of this gift. Pediatrician in Chief at CH of SA, MarkGilger, M.D., says the Texas Cavaliersgift will help the hospital treat as manyas 2,000 children each year who arediagnosed with congenital heart disease.“We are the only comprehensive unit ofthis kind in the city and this gift is helpingus develop a fully functioning programfocused on diagnosis and surgicalcorrection.” Our support will help thehospital secure state-of-the art technolo-gies, including innovative 3-D cardiacMRI and 3-D cardiac CT equipmentspecifically designed for pediatriccardiology patients. Using new 3-Dprinting technology, the pediatric heartspecialists can construct an exact replicaof the child’s injured heart, allowing thecongenital heart surgeons a hands-onmodel to determine the best way to fixthe problem. The Sisters of Charity of the IncarnateWord opened our city’s first pediatric unitin 1918 at the Santa Rosa Infirmary. Now,a century later, CH of SA’s bold medical,

surgical and technological advancements are transcending the noble vision of thefounding Sisters. Area families will haveaccess to seamless and essential criticalcardiac care, emergency services, neona-tal intensive care, and surgical services. The downtown CHRISTUS Santa RosaHospital has been completely trans-formed into The Children’s Hospital ofSan Antonio, and offers not only the mostadvanced diagnostic, treatment andsurgical facilities and care, but it is awarm, welcoming environment focusedwholly on children and their families.Art that weaves throughout the bright, open spaces pays tribute to “the spiritof the river.” The colorful interior designcelebrates our heritage and blendslyrically with The Texas Cavaliers RiverParade, which helped generate the fundsto make this gift possible. Clyde J.B. Johnson IV, 2018 River ParadeMarshal, said, “The Children’s Hospitalwas the right organization for theCavaliers to select as charitable honoreeof the 2018 River Parade. They are a vitalfixture in San Antonio’s 300-year historyand they continue to do great things forour community’s children. They are agreat partner and our 600 Cavaliers joinme in thanking them.” From the hearts of the good guys inblue suits to the hearts of our commu-nity’s children, we salute the work of thededicated medical team that will bringhealing and hope to families. That’s whatour charitable mission is all about.

Honoring Those Who Sustain Our Philanthropic Mission

Many Texas Cavaliers recognize the power of leveraging their philanthropic dollars by combining their gifts with fellow Cavaliers. They earmark their gifts for specific children’s charities to maximize their aggregate strength, and those gifts contributedappreciably to our record $1.2 million in grants this year.

Generous gifts to our “Campaign for Children” Endowment Fund were a critical component in sustaining our support for children’s causes well into the future. Our sincere gratitude to the leadership of Bob Worth, his committee and all donors. As a result, our endowment grew from $4.33 million to $6.62 million this year, including $1.92 million in future pledges. Both are records and reflect a vote of confidence in our strong performanceas a charitable foundation.

The 74th Annual Texas Cavaliers RiverParade celebrated the theme, “Magnifi-cent Missions,” which honors andcelebrates the Missions of a pioneeringgroup of Spanish Catholic settlers andtheir designation as a World HeritageSite. Even more importantly, the themehonors and embraces the tireless workof children’s organizations in San Anto-nio that toil daily with the MagnificentMission to better our children, our cityand the future of San Antonio. The Texas Cavaliers are honored tobring a one-of-a-kind parade down theSan Antonio River each year for the250,000 men, women and children wholine the riverbank in anticipation of the50 beautifully decorated barges. This yearwe doubled viewership with an additional500,000 folks throughout South Texasviewing the parade on TV. The Cavaliersworked with our public relations and social media firms to promote the RiverParade through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat, along withmainstream English and Spanish TVnetworks, local news and print media. Our effort promoted the River Parade, the charitable organizations we supportand the sponsors that invest in the TexasCavaliers River Parade. The promotionbuilt momentum throughout the 12months prior to the River Parade, expanding our platform and message. Every year, The Texas Cavaliers RiverParade provides critically needed fundingto 60 San Antonio area children’scharities. Although the parade is fun, bright and festive, its true purpose is toserve the children of San Antonio. It is a unique, spectacular and magicalcelebration that brings together our city’sdiverse community and honors its vibrantnature. Long after the floats havepassed, the spirit of the River Parade lives

on through its gifts to children’s charities. All this happens because of the supportwe receive through the following RiverParade programs. And we thank you!

• Adopt-a-Charity • Parade Float Sponsorship • Admirals Club Sponsorship • First Responders Program • Children’s Art Program • Children’s Essay Contest • Children’s River Extravaganza • Military Fiesta
