TEXAS CAVALIERSFOUNDATIONANNUAL REPORT 2017
Most people treat us like kids.
Texas Cavaliers treat us
like a million dollars.

Texas Cavaliers are husbands, fathers andgrandpas. We’re ranchers, businessmen, physicians, dentists, attorneys, oilmen, engineers, educators. You can find us hunting, fishing, playing catch with our children, supporting our military, volunteering in thecommunity and worshipping at churchesthroughout the city.
We’re always up for a good party, and that’sone of the ways we raise money to do thething that truly binds us together as a socialorganization with a charitable mission: OurAnnual Texas Cavaliers River Parade raisesmoney to support the children who look to
us for health, safety, education, recreation, inclusion and the hope of a brighter future.Contributions to our Adopt-A-Charity programbrought in record gifts this year. All of thismade it possible for us to give $1,088,551 tosupport children’s charities.
We’re the good guys in blue suits who havebeen around since 1926. And we are proud togive back. Thanks to everyone who pushedour philanthropic goal to exceed the $1 million mark … making a positive and beautifuldifference in the lives of countless children.
Who Are Those Good Guys in the Blue Suits?
In 1989, we formalized our mission by formingthe Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation.King Antonio and his royal court dedicatehundreds of volunteer hours to this greatcommunity, spreading a spirit of lightheartedfun and reminding us that play is essential toour well-being.
Other ways we raise the funds to build a betterlife for local children: memorials and specialgifts from our members to honor friends andfamily, the Endowment Fund, the Lewis HartSociety, Silver Knights, New Member Auction,Annual Fishing Weekend, Annual Golf Tourna-
ment and Adopt-A-Charity. Together with theFiesta River Parade, we continue to build thecorpus of our Foundation. We launched theFoundation with $14,000 in 1989 and havegrown this fund from which we draw ourcharitable gifts to $3.5 million in 2017.
King Antonio XCV Mike Casillas and his courtof good guys volunteer their time, energy, talents and resources so they can Treat KidsLike a Million Dollars.
We Treat Kids Like a Million Dollars

Dear Fellow Cavaliers & Friends,
We surpassed the Million Dollar Mark in giftsin 2017! What an incredible milestone for thechildren’s charities we support! To leverageour giving from $500 in 1989 to this 2017benchmark is the realization of the TexasCavaliers Charitable Foundation’s philanthropicdream. And we’re not stopping here. We willcontinue to grow the Foundation’s fundsso that our impact on charitable children’scauses may continue through this centuryand beyond.
To all who made these gifts possible, we thankyou with gratitude beyond words. You sup-ported the River Parade with your selflessand tireless volunteer hours, creativity andgenerosity. You gave to Adopt-A-Charity andthe numerous other avenues we offer to bring
diverse opportunities, joyful promise and allgood things to the children who depend on us.
We made it look like pure fun – the hundredsof visits to schools, hospitals, militaryinstallations and not-for-profit organizations –and it was fun. The shiny medals, dancing, marching bands, colorful floats, cheeringcrowds and festive foods united ourcommunity in fantastic joy. It was, as always, magical. To serve as the city’s royalty for 10days and witness the delight in children’s eyesis something we’ll never forget.
Mike Casillas – King Antonio XCVBilly Freed – President, The Texas Cavaliers
Charitable Foundation
Serving as King Antonio XCV was the greatest privilege of my life. I could nothave received a more meaningful gift as King than being able to give more than$1 million to children’s charities. Gifts to our Adopt-A-Charity program were acritical contributing factor in our ability to award over $1 million in grants for thefirst time. It brought tears to my eyes to visit schools and charitable organizationsand see the impact our dollars make on real children and their inspired caregivers, mentors and teachers. In making site visits, I have gained a deep appreciation forthe directors and staffs of the children’s non-profit organizations who take thesegifts and put them to creative and responsible use. The Texas Cavaliers haveassumed a new persona with their philanthropic mission and I am proud of ourteamwork and honored to be a part of an organization that is making such apositive influence.

In the five years I have served as a trustee of the Foundation, I’ve been impressedby the growing level of sophistication in the way we vet the charities, manage thegrant process and practice transparent diligence. We have truly become a profes-sional fund-raising philanthropy. Our donors can have utmost confidence in ourstewardship of their funds. They know we manage with wisdom and integrity. We apply best practices in everything we do and that is singularly importantto me. We know you could donate directly to your favorite charities, and we appre-ciate your trust in us to leverage your charitable dollars and support a widerrange of children’s charities with greater impact than we could accomplish alone.

The Winston School
Educating Special Children to their Highest Potential
The Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundationselected The Winston School as its featuredcharity in 2017, awarding a record $285,000grant to the private, independent school witha mighty mission.
A stroll around the campus and through thehallways of The Winston School tells youeverything you need to know. This place isdistinctive. Teachers and administrators havea passion for their work. Students from kinder-garten through senior high are smart, creative, engaged, motivated, supported, accepted andaccepting of each other. Their experientialapproach to learning imbues this campus withremarkable energy.
Students know they are special: Each has beenidentified with a learning difficulty as well asthe high potential for success. Here, they aregiven the individualized support andenvironment they need, under the guidanceof a faculty that understands variations inlearning. That’s what The Winston School hasbeen doing since 1985.
Students are enthusiastically involved inSTEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) and community service. They are excelling and competing in robotics, performing arts, athletics and more. Theyserve as mentors and role models for youngerstudents on campus.
Dr. Charles Karulak, Headmaster, says,“Students who come in with low self-esteemfind confidence and self-reliance. More than90% go to college. Some join the military.Others go directly into the work force. All dis-cover their gifts and leave us with the toolsto succeed and self-advocate.”
Students whose learning would likely behampered in a traditional school setting arenurtured here and they blossom. Their familiesexperience the joy of their achievements. For the 22% who need assistance, the schoolprovides financial aid.
The Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundationgrant will help expand the school’s performingand visual arts programs, digital media andblack box theater. Our gift will help them reachtheir capital campaign goal of $9.78 million toexpand and transform the campus.
Bart Simpson, Parade Marshal, said: “TheTexas Cavaliers Foundation selected TheWinston School because it provides forchildren who might otherwise be overlooked. This is a place for students to excel wellbeyond ordinary expectations. Winstonteachers reach these kids and bring them totheir highest potential. Our gift, presentedduring Fiesta, put The Winston School at theforefront in the media, raising awareness andsupport and we feel really grateful for theability to do that, to make a difference. It’s what our charitable mission is all about.”
