Individuals with disabilities live in poverty at twice the rate of those without disabilities. Rehabilitation counselors play a critical role in assisting people with disabilities in moving out of poverty, which is important as the new WIOA legislation requires the field to better identify and serve this population. Join this session to learn more about poverty and disability, and how to recognize, assess, and address poverty issues that may affect employment outcomes.

Service Dogs represent a unique “lovable tool" to help the clients of PTs, OTs, psychologists, therapists, social workers and special education teachers develop and improve their clients’ mobility and independence. Service dogs act as a social lubricant and incentive to accomplish treatment and personal independence goals by picking up dropped articles, promoting movement and restoring functionality and strength, while lowering anxiety and enhancing learning and trust with students with mild and moderate disabilities.
Ethics and Multiculturalism: Promoting Effective Rehabilitation Services

Persons with disabilities experience numerous stressors and barriers as a part of learning to live with a disability. Resilience and resilience cultivation are essential components and strategies to help people cope with the disability and changes that accompany it. Thus, the focus of this presentation is to help professionals increase their knowledge and understanding of resilience by learning about resilience, its applicability to persons with disabilities, resilience-based factors, and ideas to promote and cultivate resilience.
Bonding with Your Hard of Hearing or Late-Deafened VR Clients MatagordaJames Grover, Ph.D., CRC
A strong working alliance (WA) between the VR counselor and client more frequently results in a positive client outcome. As bonding is an essential element in the construct of WA, I will consider the components of bonding as they apply to the critical role of communication between the general VR counselor and the client who is hard of hearing or late-deafened. Methods to reconsider and accommodate these challenges are reviewed.

SWEP: A Collaborative School to Work Program Corpus Christi CKeith Vire, Ph.D.SWEP (School Work Experience Program) is a partnership between a provider of disabilitysupports, Vocational Rehabilitation Services, and five school districts in NorthwestArkansas. The program provides training for high school students in the 10 th, 11th, and 12th grades, as part of a transition program focused on paid work experiences, job shadowing,and soft skills training. The program, only in its second year has demonstrated outcomes thatexceed projections, and continue to improve over time.

Beginning in 2017, vocational rehabilitation staff and services will be integrated with the Board's system and American Job Centers. Reorganizing staff duties and responsibilities, ensuring common performance expectations, and promoting customer focused service helps move integration forward. Involving staff at all levels in the re-organization and following quality improvement principles has been important to success. The Gulf Coast Workforce Board in Houston, TX continues to move to a full integration of workforce development, adult education, and vocational rehabilitation service. Hear from leaders of each area as they share what they did, how they did it, and the impact it has had on both customers and staff.

This presentation will identify and describe the 10 personality disorders cited in the DSM-5. Approaches to serving clients with personality disorders will also be explored.

A robust sense of resilience is a powerful attribute in any professional field. Surprises are the new normal. Adversity will bog down those who don’t cultivate a strong pattern of resilience. By blending research on resilience and laughter, and incorporating the improvisational concept of “yes and”, I will share a unique approach for throwing a “Pie in the Face of Adversity.”

Transition to Work: A Successful Post-Secondary Education Program CopanoChrisann Schiro-Geist, Ph.D., CRCPost-secondary transition programs have been developed to provide additional training designed to improve vocational outcomes, as well as improve overall quality of life of individuals with IDD. Building an effective and sustainable program, that meets the needs of the local community, comes with many challenges. The purpose of this presentation is to present a model for IPSE that provides effective and sustainable transition services and vocational training for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The problem is that we rarely take time to reflect on these decisions. Instead, most of us go through life acting and reacting within flexible ethical limits that are unconsciously impacted by our own self-interest.
