Cincinnati: A Compact Downtown with Entrances

You will have the opportunity on your trip to the 66th National Square Dance

Convention to experience Cincinnati’s compact downtown and unique entrances. The downtown is surrounded by hills and the Ohio River. These features limit the area on which the downtown is built and therefore the buildings are built closer together creating a dynamic skyline. The hills and river also have created entrances into the downtown and made it possible to construct some famous bridges. Entrances can give travelers their first impression of a city. Since first impressions can be important, many cities try to create or enhance major entrances, whether they are pedestrian or vehicular oriented Cities can have major entrances into the metropolitan area, the downtown, specific districts or even at the airport. A city entrance can best be defined as a noteworthy feature, attraction, structure, distinct pattern of elements or events that are experienced approaching a city downtown or major district.

Watch for the following entrances when you visit Cincinnati. If you travel to the downtown on I-71 South you will pass over I-275 and several miles down the road the interstate starts to gently curve down into the Ohio River Valley. As you weave around hills there is no indication of the downtown area but then suddenly and unexpectedly the ompact downtown skyline emerges up close as the last hill is rounded. The effect is even more dramatic at night when the buildings are lit up and the hill area is dark. The approach is similar traveling north on I-71/75 in Kentucky. These are great examples of downtown entrances. Bridges can also function as entrances especially on a navigable river like the Ohio where the water provides an aesthetic feature and the boat traffic adds interest and vibrancy. Cincinnati has a variety of bridges. The best known bridge is the Roebling

Suspension Bridge which has been designated a National Historic Place and National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. This bridge was designed by the famous bridge engineer, John A. Roebling, an immigrant from Germany. The bridge connects The Banks in Cincinnati with Covington, Kentucky and accommodates pedestrian as well as vehicular traffic. Roebling used this bridge as a prototype to design his iconic Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. It must be noted that the Roebling story is one of the most fascinating in the history of American construction and includes great personal tragedy and sacrifice as well as astounding technical

Page 13: Texas Thunder VIP Event For the National Clogging ... · For the National Clogging Organization, Inc. Texas Thunder Christmas Party Linda, Donna, Marsha, Kay, Linda, & Kim. Page 18

2

achievement. If you are interested you may want to pursue additional reading material at your local library because a number of good books have been written on the subject. A brief synopsis of some of the other bridges over the Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati is included below:

The Daniel Carter Beard Bridge was named after the cofounder of the Boy Scouts of America, who was a Cincinnati native. This arch designed bridge carries I-471 vehicular traffic between Cincinnati and Newport, Kentucky. The Taylor Southgate Bridge is a truss design and carries both pedestrian and vehicular traffic between U. S. Bank Arena and Newport. Brent Spence Bridge is a double deck cantilevered truss bridge that carries both I-71 and I-75 traffic over the Ohio River. The Clay Wade Bailey Bridge is a cantilever design and carries U.S. Route 127 and U.S. Route 42 from Cincinnati to Covington.

You should compare Cincinnati’s entrances with other cities you visit. Some cities you can see the downtown buildings far off in the distance when you approach on the interstate. The buildings might be sparsely located over a large area. As you travel toward the downtown it may seem as if you are inching along passing few interesting features along the way. This is not how you experience downtown Cincinnati. The Ohio River and surrounding hills give Cincinnati a compact downtown with entrances. I hope you note and enjoy these experiences on your visit to this unique city. Cincinnati’s Purple People Bridge” - Crossing the Great Ohio River connecting Cincinnati to Covington, Kentucky is an adventure dancers visiting the 66th NSDC (R) will not want to miss.

The 2,670 ft long "Purple People Bridge" is the longest pedestrian bridge in the country connecting two states. Walking across the "Purple People Bridge" from Southwest Ohio to Northern Kentucky becomes a breathtaking and exciting 20-minute experience. Cincinnati, a City of Bridges has nine bridges crossing the Great Ohio River but only one that stands out accentuated by its brilliant purple color thus the name "Purple People Bridge".

Page 14: Texas Thunder VIP Event For the National Clogging ... · For the National Clogging Organization, Inc. Texas Thunder Christmas Party Linda, Donna, Marsha, Kay, Linda, & Kim. Page 18

Built in 1872 the former Louisville & Nashville Railroad Company used the bridge as a transportation link delivering goods from the South to the North. As transportation development progressed at the turn of the century the bridge was retrofitted for vehicle and street car use. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places the L&N Bridge was closed for railroad use in 1987 and automobile traffic in 2000.

In 2001 a four-million-dollar State grant made renovations on the bridge possible and Newport, Kentucky took advantage of the easy access the bridge offered connecting to Cincinnati and a new and exciting tourism opportunity was established. Local Residents enjoyed the scenic beauty of the Ohio River and the opening of Newport on the Levee attracted young professionals working in the city and people from near and far with an opportunity to gather and play on the riverfront. In recent years both Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky has enjoyed a huge boom in retail and restaurant development as the Ohio riverfront became a hot spot of infrastructure development where people now gather for fun in the sun on the river.

Come along for a beautiful scenic ride to Williamstown, Kentucky where you will have the opportunity of a lifetime as you experience “The Ark Encounter”. Have you ever wondered how Noah fit all those two by two animals into an ark the size of a football field? “And God said to Noah” “Build me an Ark 300 cubic by 50 cubic by 30 cubic and fill it with two of every living thing, seven pairs of every clean creature and birds, and sufficient food for all.” Are you interested in finding our exactly what is a cubic? We can tell you… but better yet we can SHOW you.

The Ark Encounter, is an exact replica of Noah’s Ark with dimensions spanning 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high. Three amazing decks are available for dancers attending the 66th NSDC® to explore and experience how life aboard an Ark really must have been for Noah, his family and thousands upon thousands of animals and birds.

Page 16: Texas Thunder VIP Event For the National Clogging ... · For the National Clogging Organization, Inc. Texas Thunder Christmas Party Linda, Donna, Marsha, Kay, Linda, & Kim. Page 18

Did you know that Noah lived over 600 years? Ever feast your eyes on a Velociraptor Raptor and who would have ever known that Noah invited Jurassic Park to the Ark? Gaze in awe and amazement the beautiful hand craftsmanship in part by Amish Carpenters whose hands lovingly recreated one of the Bible’s most beloved stories. See for yourself the result of more than one hundred seventy inspired workers amazing talents as they bring the Ark Encounter to life with interesting details about

Noah’s family to the beauty of the smallest of God’s creatures and the majesty of the largest mammals. The Ark Encounter is the largest timber frame structure in the entire world and is definitely the tour of a lifetime for dancers attending the 66th NSDC®. Please join us Tuesday June 20th and Thursday June 22, 2017 from 8:30am – 2:30pm for a tour of Biblical proportions and take a step back in time and experience for yourself “The Ark Encounter”.
