FOREWORD.But very few of Bach's Church Cantatas are musical units
in themselves, in the sense that the different numbers consti-tuting the Cantata bear such a relation to one another, eithermusical or textual, that something important is lost by nothearing them continuously in their prescribed order. A few ofthe earlier ones, such as Gottes Zeit, No. 106 (1711), Nach dirHerr, No. 150 (1712), and Aus der Tiefe, No. 131 (1707),areconstructed continuously and should be so performed. In a fewothers, such as Christ lag in Todesbanden, No. 4 (1725), andLobet den Herren der mdchtigen Konig, No. 137 (1732), eachmovement is based on the same choral melody, which binds thenumbers together. In still others, like In alien meinen Taten,No. 97 (1734), the text of each number is in the same poeticform. Except, however, for these three classes, and for the twoPassions, the Christmas and Easter Oratorios, and the six greatMotets, it would be impossible for the greatest Bach expert,if the movements of any ten Cantatas were all shuffled up to-gether, to put them back again in their places, except by arbi-trarily remembering in which Cantata the different movementshappen to come. There are at least eighty numbers whichBach himself used twice or more in different choral works.
Accordingly, there appears to be no sound reason why onemay not pick out, from various Cantatas, several movementswhich are related textually and are at the same time musicallycompatible, and make of them a Cantata which calls for a con-venient paucity of soloists and instruments and at the sametime contains no number which is less interesting and thrillingthan the others. By this I do not mean that any Bach is unin-

teresting, merely that a great deal of Bach is much more inter-esting than much which is less so.When, several years ago, I became convinced of this, I beganthe fascinating pursuit of making these Integrated Cantatas, the possibility for which is infinite.
Obviously, the initial requisite is textual coherence. Givena subject, such as Humility, Christ the Good Shepherd, OurHearts as God's Dwelling Place, God's Bounty to Man, etc., itis necessary first to pick out all the numbers in all the Cantatasthe text of which has a reasonable relation to the subject, andfrom them then put together those which are the most beauti-ful, which will properly go together musically, and which requirethe desired soloists and instruments. There being no suchBach Concordance in existence, even in German, I set about mak-ing one; and here it is.
Perhaps I can best explain what it is by telling briefly themethod which I pursued in making it.
Having completed translations of all the Choral "Works, Ifirst determined on the principal subjects dealt with in the texts, such as God, Christ, Prayer, Praise, Rejoicing, Heaven, Satan,Sin, Man, World, Christians, Death, Tribulation, Foes, Judg-ment Day, Hypocrisy, Neighbor, Repentance, etc., with appro-priate subdivisions for each. A number of such designationsare doubtless arbitrary with me ; I have tried to offset this diffi-culty by means of copious cross-references. Despite these, theuser will have to study the whole and familiarize himself withmy peculiarities of nomenclature before he can make the bestuse of it.
Having determined on the major titles, I went through myEnglish texts of all the choral works, line by line, and card-indexed them by appropriate titles, sub-titles, and further sub-divisions, noting on separate cards, as I went along, as cross-

references, all titles which I thought might be looked for byothers. I then went through them a second, third, and fourthtime to determine if each was indexed where I thought it shouldbe, as a result of which most of the ideas in the texts will befound indexed under several different headings, which shouldfacilitate their location. Finally, I checked all the cards backinto the texts to be sure that the references were correct. Fromthe cards this Concordance was then constructed. There aredoubtless still some mistakes, but I hope not many.
The meaning of the figures and letters is as follows:The first figure, where not in parentheses, is the number
of the Cantata, as per the numbering used in the Bachgesell-schaft Edition and in the Breitkopf & Hartel piano scores.Where the first number is in parentheses, it is a Simple Choraleand the number refers to the 389 Chorales in the Richter (B &H) edition. If the first number is preceded by M, J, X, or E,it refers to the St. Matthew or St. John Passion, or to theChristmas or Easter Oratorio. Mot. means one of the six greatMotets. German words, such as "Schwingt freudig", refer tothe 15 Cantatas, without numbers, published only in the Bach-gesellschaft Edition. 204 of the 389 simple chorales in theRichter (B & H) edition are also in the Church Cantatas (Nos.1-199) or in the Passions, Oratorios or Motets. This Index doesnot always refer to them in both places, but they can always belocated in the other place by referring to my texts of theChorales, where the other reference is given.
The number in parentheses which follows the Cantata num-ber is that of the movement in the specified Cantata. The let-ters which follow the parentheses have the following meanings
Capital letters signify Arias, Duets, or Choruses; smallletters signify Recitatives or simple Chorales. S, A, T, or B

mean Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Bass. The letters ss, aa, tt, orbb mean Ariosos for the respective voices. Thus, the first itemon page 1, 196 (1) C, means the first number of Cantata 196,which is a Chorus; the second item, 57 (2) s, means the secondnumber of Cantata 57, which is a Eecitative for Soprano. Thefirst item under Abram's Bosom, J (68) c, means that it is No.68 of the St. John Passion, a simple chorale. (154) means No.154 of the Richter Choralgesange. Under Accounting (Caesar'sPenny), 163 (1) T, (2) b, (3) B, (4) S-A, means that Caesar'sPenny is referred to four times in Cantata 163; in the firstmovement, which is a Tenor Aria; in the second movement, aBass Recitative ; in the third movement, a Bass Aria ; and in thefourth, a Duet-Aria for Soprano and Alto.
CF means Choral Fantasia, CM choral motet; cf means''compare"Sue etc. means a Soprano Unison Chorale.
(G) signifies that the idea indexed is in the G-erman text, but not in the English. (E) means that it is in the English, butnot in the German; that is to say, invented by me for thereasons which I have endeavored to explain in my Introductionto the Translated Texts.
At the end of the Concordance is a tabulation of Bible ref-erences. This does not, of course, purport to be exhaustive orto include the oft-recurring or less direct references.
In the Introduction to Volume I, containing the transla-tions of Cantatas 1-100, I said:
''At the end of the Concordance will be a table giving, asto each Cantata, the references and discussions of it in allthe principal books and magazine articles on Bach; alsoa list of all the editions publishing the music with English

words; with additional useful information as to the timeof performance and suitability of the different move-ments. * * *"
This data has grown to such proportions that I have decidedto put it in a separate Volume (Vol. V). This will permit fur-ther revision of it, as well as its submission to my much appre-ciated critics before publication, which I hope will be possiblesometime during 1943.
Of what practical use this Concordance will be without acomplete and cheap edition of Bach with English texts, I do notknow; but, as Franklin said, ''What is the use of a new born
