Textual Analysis (Student Work) – TV Channel Website

Page 2: Textual Analysis (Student Work) – TV Channel Website

Immediately states the audience they are targeting and telling them that this channel will reflect their personalities e.g. teenage/young adults who have alternative personalities. The black and white choice of colours reflect the alternative mode of address as does the bold and in your face choice of font/typography. Also the choice of black and white colours would reflect that this website is targeted to people of different ethnic minorities showing they do not discriminate.

The logo reflects this channels mode of address firstly with the choice of colours. The black and white colours used here reflects the alternative gothic style of this website and the audience they are targeting. Also the bold bubble writing in which ‘ALT’ is written in again reflects the brash and in your face style of the website. ‘ALT’ is an abbreviation of alternative which is what their production is based on and is the kind of audience they are targeting therefore it sticks to the conventions of this groups website.

The titles of the articles on this website are written in a stand out bold text in all capitals. This is an attempt to gain the audiences attention by using stand out, eye-catching titles so the audience are drawn to this and are encouraged to read these articles. Also it sticks to the black and white colour scheme used throughout this website keeping it professional and consistent. They also include images to support these articles relating to the mode of address and the target audience in an attempt to entice the audience more into reading into these articles.

This group includes a list of buttons across the top of this page to multiple different pages of their website. They keep a consistent visual style with the black and white colours used therefore keeping their website professional and continuing to target an audience.

This group has selected a dimly lit brick wall to use as the background to their pages. This reflects the mode of address because the alternative, gothic style of their website and the audience their targeting connote this harsh, common choice of background.

This group also attempt to grab the audiences attention by including a list of ‘todays top 5’. This will encourage the audience to read into this as it will include key information on the days events and is stuff they will want to be informed of.

This group includes a series of images to represent this article and show visual aids of the music gig they are talking about in this article. Images of the band are included and also the disorganised way in which these images are structured together reflects the alternative style of the website and the audience they are targeting.

This group also includes a video of the band playing at the gig in which this article is describing. This gives the audience an insight look into the band and along with the images it will encourage the audience to read this article more than just a simple wall of text.

The article ends with a rating of the gig and the sound and both of these are rated five stars. This gives the audience a good impression of the band and the venue and if they initially notice that when they first visit the page they will be more encourage to read the article in full if it is so highly praised.

The article is headlined by the name of the band and this differs to the rest of the article as it is in a much larger, bolder text and in a different colour. This is to grab the audiences attention so they know exactly the topic of the article and who the band are.

The title of this article is written in a larger, bolder font and has a individual colour to the rest of the page. This is to make the title stand out to the audience so the audience are drawn to it and encouraged to read the article. They also include some small print underneath the title therefore when the audience are immediately drawn to the title they also notice the small print details below.

In this article they differentiate the questions from the answers by replacing the colour of the font with the questions in blue and the answers in white. This is to make it easier for the audience to understand and represents the back and fourth flow of the interview.

In another section of this website they include a gallery of images to represent what and who is being talked about in the main interview. The photo booth headline is vaguely noticeable in the background but is dominated by the gallery headline in the foreground which means the audience instantly see and understand what this section represents.

In this section of the website this group includes a list of images in the gallery to represent what is being talked about in the interview. It also keeps a consistent style by using black and white colours plus the images themselves are pretty simplistic and reflect the alternative style of the website and the audience they are appealing to.

Ideas for Inclusion

One of ideas for exclusion our group has had from this students work is to keep a consistent visual style. This student uses similar colours, fonts and images throughout their website and this keeps the website professional and keeps the mode of address regular. It also helps to target an audience as the visual style reflects the alternative and gothic style and the audience they are trying to attract therefore fans of alternative music will be encouraged to read into this website as it stereotypes the kind of person who enjoys this style of music. We also aim to use a certain style of font/typography to make it stand out and catch the eye of our audience as it will encourage them to continue navigating our site. We also aim to create a logo that successfully reflects the demographic we are aiming to that connotes what we are basing our productions on. We also aim to include different multimedia such as images and video that link to the genre and successfully target our audience as this will encourage the audience to navigate than a simple block of text would.

Ideas for Exclusion

One idea for exclusion we had was to use more brighter, stand out colours on our site. This group has used black and white throughout the majority of their website as they are targeting an alternative and gothic audience however we want the visual style on our website to me more creative and colourful as we are targeting a different kind of audience and want to grab their attention. We also feel some of the text on this website especially on the main articles is too small and therefore may be difficult for the audience to read. This could detract an audience from reading through these articles and gaining more information on the channel therefore we aim to make ours larger and more stand out so the audience notice it, can clearly read it and therefore are encouraged to read on.
