    Penn State Relays

    Meet Preview:

The true competitive season begins this weekend as the UMBC Indoor Track and

Field teams head up to State College for the Penn State Relays. In a shortened

indoor season in which the Conference meet is less than six weeks away, expect

stellar performances to come right off the bat. Additionally, the entire squad will be

represented, so this is the best chance to see every single athlete in a competition

in one of the best indoor facilities in the Mid-Atlantic.

One of the biggest differences from the Bucknell Bison Opener is the return of the

entire distance squad, many of whom sat out last meet after resting from the cross

country season. The mens team will feature the entire roster that finished third at

the Conference meet, including the seven runners who finished in the top 26. The

womens side will showcase the future of the cross country team with six

sophomores and freshmen in the 3,000 meters, including Angel Bucci who was the

second Retriever across the line at the first cross country meet of the year before

    injuries curtailed her season.

Also look towards to big improvements in the sprinting events, especially on the

mens side. With Denny Long returning to form after an injury hampered fall

training, the return of IC4A qualifier Sean Cooper and transfer Jenove Blanfort

(Virginia State) potentially starting the season, we could see a return of UMBCsprinting dominance.

Amanda Deller, Cam McDearmon and transfer Yao Adantor all came out of the

gates strong with ECAC/IC4A qualifying performances, however expect those initial

performances to be greatly improved with another month of technique work in the

books. Additionally, impact transfer Thor Serafenas (Clemson) could start the

season and immediately factor in the scoring at the Conference meet.

Last Meet Highlights: Bucknell Bison Opener Mercedes Jackson wins the 60m dash in a school record 7.47

Amanda Deller and Ebonique Jones both won events in the shot and long jump

respectively. Dellers throw was an ECAC qualifier.

Chowan Brightful finished second in the 60m hurdles and third in the high jump

Paulette Fogel finished second in the 800 meters

Yao Adantor threw an IC4A qualifying and #2 All Time performance in the shot

Cam McDearmon finished third in the weight with an IC4A qualifying throw off only

    two turns

Shioma Obemeata and Mo Drammeh both finished second in the triple and high jumps

    respectively

Freshmen Redatu Semeon and Andrew Kereszetes recorded second place finishes in

the 3,000 meters and mile repectively

Sophomore Mercedes Jacksonrepeated her school record

performance in the prelims of the

meter dash and then beat it in th

finals with a time of 7.47. Her tim

    places her 1st

    in the America East a

    13th

in the nation in the very, very

    early season rankings. An

improvement of a tenth of secon

could put her on the plane to

    Nationals.

    Athlete Spotlights

    Brandan McGee:

During the outdoor campaign, McGee broke through with a Conference title in the 3,00

meter steeple chase and a fifth place finish in the 5,000 meters. He continued that

success into the cross country campaign with a seventh place finish to earn All-

Conference honors at the America East Championships. He will be looking to continue

that success and break into the scoring for the first time at the Indoor Conference meet

in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters. With the school record in the steeplechase along

with the fastest 5,000 meter, 8,000 meter, and second fastest 10,000 meter cross

country times in school history, he could add a few more records to the cupboard durin

    the winter season.

    Shioma Obemeata:

Looking to break through to the top of the podium in the triple jump, he started the

season with an early season lead in the America East performance lists with a near IC4A

qualifying jump of 47 3, only a couple inches of his best jump. In addition he is looking

to expand his repertoire by adding in both the high jump and long jump. Potentially he

could end up on the podium in three events during the Conference meet.
