TRURO FAMILY NEWS JANUARY 29–FEBRUARY 05, 2012 Property Verification Drive Need Dear fellow parishioners: As part of our ongoing Property Verification Drive, a key aspect of this will be for us to account for items donated by Truro parishioners after January 31, 2007. Below is a link to a downloadable form that will allow you to formally advise us of any materials you may have donated to Truro Church in the past few years. Your signed form should serve to verify that our claim on the property is legally correct, and should help us to retain the property in the event we vacate the property. The form should allow you to be able to list more than one item in the event you donated a variety of items at one time. If you donated items on different dates, it would be extremely helpful to fill out a form for each time you made a donation of property. Forms can be printed out by going to the following link on our website: www.trurochurch.org/ propertydonationforms. Please place completed forms in the mailbox of Katrina Wagner in the Truro mailroom. I gratefully thank you for your kind assistance in response to this request! MOPS: Fellowship and Support for MomsDo you have a child newborn to age 5? Then you are warmly invited to join Truro MOPS, a

special group for mothers of preschool age children. The second Tuesday of each month we

come together for savory refreshments, dessert, and coffee, followed by group discussions on

topics of interest to us as mothers. During specifi c monthly meetings this year, we will also

hear from veteran moms and other guest speakers for encouragement, and guidance. Our

next meeting will be held Tuesday, February 7. Please note that this is a special meeting that

will occur separately in our MOPS discussion groups in individual’s homes. Normally, we all

meet together in the Undercroft, but the February meeting will be a special exception. If you

are interested in visiting for the fi rst time in February and are not already a member of a MOPS

discussion group, please contact Kellie Singh at [email protected] for more information.

There will be no childcare for the February meeting, but during regular monthly meetings in

the Undercroft, childcare is provided.

Along with The Chronicles of Narnia, The

Great Divorce and Mere Christianity, THE

SCREWTAPE LETTERS is still one of Lewis’

most popular and infl uential works. When

fi rst published in 1942, it bought immediate

fame, including a picture on the front of TIME

Magazine, to this little-known Oxford don

including the cover of Time Magazine. The

Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis is an amusing

and insightful correspondence between a

senior devil, Screwtape, and his incompetent

nephew, Wormwood. All of the letters are from

Screwtape to Wormwood, and the subject of the

correspondence is a newly converted Christian,

whom Screwtape refers to as "the patient."

Throughout the correspondence, Screwtape

tries to help Wormwood tempt the patient away

from Heaven and into Hell. In this humorous

and perceptive exchange between two devils,

C. S. Lewis delves into moral questions about

good vs. evil, temptation, repentance, and

grace. Through this wonderful tale, the reader

emerges with a better understanding of what

it means to live a faithful life.

Join us as we embark on a 12 week study

from the C.S. Lewis Institute of the C.S. Lewis

Study Program on the SCREWTAPE LETTERS,

by Dr. Jerry Root, a noted C.S. Lewis Scholar

and faculty member at Wheaton College.

In this insightful study Dr. Root provides

helpful background and emphasis to Lewis’s

fascinating imaginary correspondence. We

are given penetrating insights into how Lewis

portrays the unseen powers of evil and how

they work to ensnare and destroy those who

seek to follow Christ. This 12 week study

program provides 6 DVD presentations by Dr.

Jerry Root as you delve into 2–3 letters each

week accompanied with a study guide for

deeper understanding.

The Putz Home Group invites you to join us

for a casual dinner orientation on February

Monday 6th at 7 pm located at 5431 Plymouth

Meadows Court, Fairfax, 22032. Please call

to RSVP at 703.239.2737 or send an email to

[email protected]. Children welcome!

Vestry Elections 2012

Sandra BittnerSandy has been a member of Truro since 1985. She lives in Clifton and has three ch i l d ren and f ou r grandchildren. Sandy met Christ at a very early age through her spirit-

fi lled grandmother, and that strong relationship with our Lord continues to grow deeper and wider. As the wife of a Marine Offi cer, she lived in many places but was always a participant at every level of church life. It was her closeness to the Lord that kept her well grounded during Barry’s deployments. Sandy has 32 years experience as Founder, Owner and CEO of a home building company. She has bought property and built and sold many homes throughout Virginia and Maryland.

Sandy is a member of the Daughters of the King, has been a member of the Ordination Discernment Committee and other study groups and continues the involvement that she and Barry had at TIPS. She was chairman of volunteers for the Relationship Central and Christopher West Conferences. She attended the Alpha Ambassadors Conference and is on the team for the ongoing Alpha courses. She and Cathy Tate will be partnering with “Alpha for Seniors” in local retirement homes, She has been the group leader or the Fairfax City home group for several years.

Sandy believes we are in a diffi cult but inspired time in the life of Truro, and while it is a time of sadness and discernment, we will find support and comfort with each other. Working together as a team, using our combined gifts and experiences, and strengthened by our love of Christ, we shall be given the power and the will to successfully navigate our way through this diffi cult transition.

Chip WedanRobert “Chip” Wedan has been attending Truro since 2002 and a member since 2010. He and his wife, Bette Jo, live in Lorton, Virginia. He became a Christian in 1971 in his senior year of high school. “I

sensed a deep void in my heart. Although the social pressures of high school made me fi rst aware of this void, I knew it was a chronic problem and I had to fi nd a permanent answer. The fulcrum principle, which brought me to spiritual crisis and then to salvation, was Jesus’ words – ‘I did not come for the righteous but for sinners.’ I began to see that sin encompasses

much more than murder and theft. As stated in 2 Samuel 16: “Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart”. When I realized that my thoughts and the condition of my heart were well within God’s domain, I knew there was no place to hide. I am a sinner indeed. This thought, though depressing to some, became my great hope. Through it, I fi nally realized that Jesus had come for me and I prayed for His help. Gratefully, my goal since then has been fi nding what it means to let Jesus be Lord in my life.”

Chip is employed as an attorney with the Department of Defense and has been active in a variety of activities and ministries, including Home Group and Ushering. He also now serves on the Finance Committee and regularly drives the pick-up van for Love the World Fellowship.

Chip will be able to assist Truro through the Vestry as a result of his signifi cant management and leadership experience gained from his 28 years in the U. S. Navy.

Chip senses that God wants to do the following in the life of the church in the next three years: “Truro already has a wonderful vision. Internally, it is committed to scriptural truth and personal growth. Externally, it is committed to being a witness to our surrounding community. That’s a great course and I’m excited to be a part of it, whether on the Vestry or not.”

Gioia Egan Gioia has been attending Truro Church since 1981. She was conf i rmed at Truro in 1984 and married Dennis at Truro in 1996. They are happy residents of the City of Fairfax with their grown

children and two grandchildren living nearby. Gioia was born and raised in a Christian environment and grew up believing in salvation through Jesus Christ. However in 1982 when she took a course on John Stott’s book Basic Christianity she became aware of the work of the Holy Spirit. It was at that time she committed her life to Jesus Christ and began to get to know her Lord and Savior. Her life began the transformation process which continues to this day. Gioia was a single mother for ten years and was employed on Truro staff for the fi ve years prior to her marriage to Dennis. Some of her volunteer activities have included meeting one-on-one with ladies in the Fairfax jail, helping 1st graders read in the local elementary school and as a counselor at Sanctity of Life Ministries. Jim RobbJim Robb has belonged to Truro since 1999. He lives with his wife Vicki in Alexandria. Jim and Vicki were drawn to Truro by because of its vibrant worship and joyful atmosphere. Jim

became a Christian at the 10, and he has had a life-long passion to learn God’s Word, understand the deep things of the Gospel, and try to model the Christian life. Additionally, he enjoys serving the Lord through his church. He works as Vice President of NumbersUSA, a political advocacy group in Arlington. Jim’s responsibilities at NumbersUSA include building its million-person email list and Internet and major donor fundraising. Jim chairs the Truro Stewardship Committee, where he led the past two fall stewardship campaigns. He is currently working with the staff on stewardship and communications strategies. In 2011, at the request of the Executive Director, Jim delivered a presentation to the Vestry on “Year Round Stewardship,” focusing on communications and evangelism. Additionally, he was a member of last spring’s Legal Defense Fund campaign committee. In 2010, Jim chaired the parish-wide study event, featuring Maxie Dunnam. Earlier, Jim served as a choir member. When the wider church controversy swept Truro into the spotlight, Jim aided Martyn Minns as voluntary media aide. During the critical period surrounding the vote to withdraw, Jim was the church’s contact person for the national and local media. Other Christian work includes serving as chairman of the Development Committee for the Institute on Religion and Democracy, where he also serves on the Executive Committee. (The IRD was founded by Jim’s late father, the Rev. Edmund Robb, a Methodist evangelist.) Jim volunteers his help to various Christian groups in the area of online fundraising. Recently, for example, he has consulted with the staff of Alpha USA in Chicago. Jim hopes to continue aiding the Truro, especially in the areas of stewardship and parish communication, during this critical time. Penelope HayesPenelope Hayes has been attending Truro Church since 1997 and has been a member since 1999. She and her husband and their 2 children live in Vienna. She became a Christian

while on a Truro women’s retreat, where Janet Parshall was the speaker. For the fi rst time in her life Penelope heard about a Jesus who was personal and longed for an intimate relationship with those He loves. She was given a clearer understanding of His forgiveness, and received an intense desire to know Him more fully. In the following years she has pursued this relationship with Christ and felt His pursuit of her, even in times of doubt or worry, due to extreme illness or great stress. She has felt the incredible joy of His presence, and has attempted to take that joy to others with a goal of revealing God’s plan for His children of Love and relationship with Him and with others. Penelope has been a homeschooling mom for 8 years and is also employed with Truro Preschool and Kindergarten in their Creative Play afterschool program. She has been active in a variety of activities and ministries including: Truro Preschool and Kindergarten preschool teacher; Truro VBS programs for 8 years; Truro Children’s ministry staff for 3 years; Truro Women’s Ministry; Leader of Truro Women’s Ministry for 4 years; set design for Truro’s “Oz” & “Fiddler on the Roof;” chaperone for Truro Fall Youth Retreat for 2 years; Speaker for Truro Women’s Retreats, MOPS, Truro By Design Conferences and Anglicans for Life; intensive Head & Heart Immersion course at J.P. II Institute in PA., and intensive Theology of the Body course at Catholic

University in D.C.; creator and teacher of multiple programs/curriculums based on Pope

John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.

Bill HudsonBill Hudson has been attending Truro Church since 2007and has been a member since 2008. He and his wife and their children live in Fairfax Station. He became a Christian when he was a

teenager. When my family moved to Southern California a neighbor invited us to their church. It was there I became a Christian as a teenager when I realized through a dream that I could not enter into God’s presence without the atoning grace of Jesus and what He had done

through the cross and His resurrection. The Lord has graciously guided me since: in my career and my wonderful Christian wife. We have moved around the world and He has always provided wonderful Christian fellowship and ministry opportunities through small groups and local churches. These included starting an English language church in Lome Togo, teaching Sunday school to children in the expatriate community, mentoring a young couples group in South Africa and leading a Bible study in Paris. I have also served on the vestry in both Belgrade and at St. Peters in the Woods in Fairfax Station. I have been thankful for all the service experiences He has provided regardless of where the State Department assigned us. He also blessed me with wonderful children and grandchildren. I cannot image a life without Jesus. I am retired from the State Department. I have been active in a variety of activities and ministries including: Special Forces, TIPS, Outreach and LWF as well as volunteering for support of Truro outreach and teaching conferences.

Steven TemmeSteven Temme attended Truro Church f rom 2004-2006 and then became a member in 2010 after coming back to the Church. Steven, his wife Missy and two daughters Scarlet and

Elin live in Alexandria. Steven fi rst came to faith at 18 upon graduating high school. He experienced many different settings of the Christian life in college at Indiana University and in graduate school in Paris while attending The American Church of Paris as participant in its young adult ministry and a formative couples bible study. It wasn’t until the summer of 2010, though, that he would receive true healing and the gift of the Holy Spirit through the ministry of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal together with the Alpha course here at Truro. This transforming work of the Holy Spirit continues to lead him in a newfound study of Scripture and of histories of the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

Steven is by trade a musician who is currently serving as a Gunnery Sergeant in “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band as a saxophonist as well as a freelance musician frequently engaged with the Baltimore Symphony and other ensembles in the region. He is passionate about the important role the arts have played and will play in the future of the church.

Steven remains active in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement within the Diocese of Arlington in many events with

young adults and those seeking a richer “Life in the Spirit.” He participates in the Alpha ministry at Truro together with his wife as small group leaders and co-leads a home group in Alexandria. He participates from time-to-time in worship as an instrumentalist and generally fi lls in as needed at Truro as your average klezmer-playing-co-fi ddler-clarinetist, Alpha-t testifying, betrothed-partner-to-the-Blessed-Virgin-Mary-around-Christmas-time, kind of guy. He says of being at Truro and of the Christian life this second time around, “the road is tough, joy abounds, and redemption is at every turn!”

Shirley Coffi eldI came to Truro while searching for a new Church home in late 2003 as a result of the actions of ECUSA General Conventions over many years. I found at Truro a wonderful

healing experience and the grace and power of God at work, and joined Truro in early 2004. I live in Alexandria Virginia (445 Clayton Lane, 22304), have three adult children and one grandchild, and am a lawyer with offi ces at home and in Washington DC.

I came to the Lord through the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in 1980. Having been raised a Methodist I was familiar with the Bible, and loved the songs, but it was not until I experienced a personal relationship with the Living God that my journey of Christian life really began. I have grown tremendously through the experiences God has given me, and the people He has put into my life. Looking back I see His hand on my life, and looking forward I walk in faith that He will complete the work He has begun in me. I constantly am amazed at how far I have come and how far I have yet to go. It is an exciting journey!

At Truro, I am director of the Truro Aftercare Ministry at the Fairfax jail, a member of the Local Outreach Committee, serve as a LEM and generally help out when called. I appreciate the teachings and courses at Truro and have participated in several.

I love the family of God at Truro and believe our journey together as a family in these next few years can be a great witness to the grace and glory of God at work in the world. What a great honor He has given Truro to serve Him in this way! Wherever our future lies, I believe it is important for us to discern His will and do His work, always giving him the Glory and exclaiming his Truth to all we meet.
