Cross of Nails Lenten Artwork

Coventry's magnificent medieval Cathedral was destroyed in

November 1940 by a massive German airstrike. The then

Provost, Dick Howard, made a commitment not to revenge, but to

forgiveness and reconciliation with those responsible.

Six weeks later, during a BBC radio broadcast from the Cathedral

ruins on Christmas Day, he declared that when the war was over we

should work with those who had been enemies "to build a kinder,

more Christ-like world."

Among the ruins, two charred beams had fallen in the shape of a cross. They were bound and

placed on an altar of rubble, and the words "Father Forgive" were inscribed on the wall of the

ruined chancel. Three medieval nails were formed into a cross and the Cross of Nails symbol

became a potent sign of friendship and hope in the post war years.

(The cathedral later founded a Ministry of Peace and Reconciliation, which has provided spiritual

and practical support in areas of confl ict throughout the world. Canon Andrew White worked

there for a number of years.)

Confirmation Class Service Project—The confi rmation class of 2012 is partnering with Stop Hunger Now to pack 10,000 meals that will be sent around the world. Truro Goes to Haiti: August 13–20Truro Outreach and La Comunidad Hispana want to extend our Truro Church family an invitation

and a call for prayerful support for a short-term mission project to take place this summer on

August 13-20, 2012. A team of Truro members will be traveling to Haiti for a week of inspired

service at God’s Littlest Angels, an orphanage in Pétition-Ville, a few miles east of Port-au-Prince,

Haiti’s capital city.

God's Littlest Angels is a non-profi t Christian ministry incorporated in the State of Colorado. The

majority of the children brought to the orphanage are between the ages of newborn and 7 years

old. GLA also has older children, sibling groups, and children with special needs waiting for

adoptive parents. God's Littlest Angels has ministered to the children of Haiti since 1994 and

is involved in several children's ministries in the local community.

Currently, La Comunidad Hispana and Truro Outreach are building the team that will go to God’s

Littlest Angels and want you to join us for our next meeting on Friday, March 2 at 7 pm in the

Common Grounds. We encourage all who will be interested in this mission project to GLA to

prayerfully consider becoming a part of our team. We need a team of 12 short-term mission

volunteers, hopefully 6 men and 6 women, who will have a burning desire to serve God’s Littlest

Angels and to be a part of this missionary experience sponsored by our church. Speaking French

is not necessary, but it will be a big plus if you do. Come and join those who already are part of

To the Truro Family, 

I attended the court hearing Wednesday (February 29) at which the remaining issues arising out of Judge Bellows’ January 10 letter of opinion were debated and settled. The hearing started before 10 am and ended after 7 pm. It resumed yesterday afternoon, resolving several final matters before the judge signed the Order last night. 

The Order is available online at www.thediocese.net. Here are some highlights and context that may be helpful to you in understanding what it means to Truro: 

1. The January 10 opinion was clearly a win for the Diocese and TEC and the Order reflects that. The judge determined that they owned the real and personal property we held as of January 31, 2007.  

2. Both sides thought the judge had gotten it wrong in certain respects. The Diocese and TEC argued last week that we should be required to pay pre‐judgment interest on the cash we had on hand on January 31, 2007 at the statutory rate of 6%. The judge denied that motion. We believe that the judge failed to take into appropriate consideration that well before 2007, most donors to Truro had indicated that their contributions were not to go to the Diocese or TEC. We argued that those gifts therefore should not be included in determining what we owe to the Diocese and TEC. The Attorney General’s office was present and argued in favor of our position, but the judge denied our motion to reconsider. 

3. However, as the judge reviewed other areas of controversy between the parties we were able to get some important concessions: 

a. The money we owe the Diocese (what we held as of Jan 31, 2007) will be reduced by the amounts of 1) prepaid tuition for Truro Pre‐School and Kindergarten, 2) uncleared checks (that is, checks we had written before that date but that hadn’t gotten to the bank by then), 3) payroll, payroll deductions, taxes, withholding, pension contributions and accrued vacation, and 4) money we held that had been restricted by the contributor for use outside the parish (e.g., support for specific missionaries or ministries in other countries) that we subsequently used for the restricted purposes. 

b. While we and the Diocese need to work out the final details concerning what we owe, these reductions will significantly reduce that amount, probably by hundreds of thousands of dollars. 

c. We may keep the name Truro, and as long as we use the word “Anglican” in our signs, stationery and website, the Diocese and TEC can’t complain later on about confusion if they start a Truro Episcopal Church. The Diocese will get the domain name www.trurochurch.org, but for one year (or during any appeal, whichever is longer) visitors to that URL will be automatically forwarded to our new site. 

d. Mortgages on real property will have to be assumed by the Diocese when they take possession of the property. While this does not directly affect Truro, it is important to several of our sister parishes.  

e. The date for completing transfer of property to the Diocese is April 30, not an earlier date they had requested. This transfer includes our land and buildings. We have several options if we need or want to stay past that date. We may negotiate a lease with the Diocese to remain for some period of time after April 30. Or if we appeal the ruling we can ask the court to prevent it from taking effect while the appeal is pending. At this point we are considering our options. 

4. The impact of the Order is different for each congregation. It is more costly for some than others. Let’s keep ourselves and our sister congregations in prayer. 

5. While we do not agree with Judge Bellows’ January 10 opinion letter, he listened to our arguments patiently and was fully engaged in trying to find solutions that would address concerns of the parties. He also settled some matters the sides would likely never have been able to resolve otherwise.  

6. We have a great team of lawyers. They have done a great job representing us. They have been a gift of God to us. 

 This is a time of major transition for all of us at Truro. We will do our best to keep you informed of developments and to create opportunities to hear from you. We will also be asking you to help with the very large amount of work we will have to accomplish in the next months.  I encourage you to attend one of the four briefings Tory is conducting in the Undercroft on Saturday evenings this month.  I will be there as will other Vestry members. Because the space is limited, we ask that you register online at www.trurochurch.org/rectorsupdates in advance.  Please keep Tory, the rest of the clergy and staff, and the Vestry in your prayers. God is sovereign, loving and powerful. He sometimes chooses to move his people to open up for us new avenues of service and growth. We look forward to seeing his purposes unfold for us in the months and years ahead.  Dan Van Ness Senior Warden
