Often, these are children with the most prominent ‘Special Need’ that we encounter here at Truro, Autism. The term ‘Special Needs’ is an umbrella which covers a staggering array of diagnoses. Children with special needs may have mild learning disabilities or profound mental retardation; food allergies or terminal illness; developmental delays that catch up quickly or remain entrenched; occasional panic attacks or serious psychiatric problems. The designation is useful for getting needed services, setting appropriate goals, and gaining understanding for a child and stressed family. Within the Truro family, we are aware of over 50 families dealing with Special Needs children. These marriages are far more likely to find themselves facing divorce (over 80% in our nation) and financial strain with the enormous cost of care and medicine needed to give their children the best chance at a successful life. We as the body of Christ must have the heart of Christ as we live into His words “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these”. You and I must look at these children of special needs as they truly are; precious and loved by God, a part of our church family with their own gifts to share, and disabilities and needs that must be addressed. Welcome To Our New Members…

Special Needs Children and the Church by Melissa Ciavarella Director of Family Ministry

Have you, like many, watched an out of control child and thought ‘why are the parents not teaching that child how to behave!’? Are those children really ill-behaved or are they struggling with issues that are not apparent to the on looker? Often, these are children with the most prominent ‘Special Need’ that we encounter here at Truro, Autism.

The term ‘Special Needs’ is an umbrella which covers a staggering array of diagnoses. Children with special needs may have mild learning disabilities or profound mental retardation; food allergies or terminal illness; developmental delays that catch up quickly or remain entrenched; occasional panic attacks or serious psychiatric problems. The designation is useful for getting needed services, setting appropriate goals, and gaining understanding for a child and stressed family.

Within the Truro family, we are aware of over 50 families dealing with

Special Needs children. These marriages are far more likely to fi nd themselves facing divorce (over 80% in our nation) and fi nancial strain with the enormous cost of care and medicine needed to give their children the best chance at a successful life.

Please join us in ministering to these children and their families. To volunteer and/or for more information, please visit our website or call us at 703-273-1300, ext 312.

Baptisms, Confi rmations, and New Members

This Tuesday, April 13, the Virginia Supreme Court will hear oral arguments concerning the church property case initiated by The Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Virginia.

Truro parishioner Jim Oakes, who serves as Chairman of the Synod Council of the Anglican District of Virginia, notes, “It’s unfortunate that this matter, which we tried so hard to resolve amicably out of court from the beginning, has now reached the level of the state Supreme Court. However, we remain confi dent in our legal footing end.”

As the Court convenes this Tuesday, there will be a service of worship and prayer led by Associate Rector Coleman Tyler in Truro’s Chapel from Noon–1 pm. Please join us for this gathering as we come before God with our praise and petitions—praying above all for His will to be done, and His Kingdom purposes advanced. The Chapel will be open all day for those wishing to pray before or after the Noon gathering.

It’s been well said that when God’s people gather on their knees in humility before Him, we often accomplish more than when we are on our feet! Do join us for this important time of seeking Him this Tuesday.

Please Welcome all these and share their joy as they take another step on their faith journey. Some of these persons are already known to you by their ministry among us, others may be new faces. We are so grateful for each of you. Our family of faith is greatly enriched by your presence and partnership!

Truro’s Annual Meeting

Meeting God in IndiaBy Christine Mumford with Ben Mitchell(Christine and Ben met as members of Truro’s 2009 Team India, and will be married in June)

The birds chirping, the street dogs stirring, the horns starting, fi rst slowly, to honk the dawn into daytime. The chatter of children, and the march of bare feet on dirt roads; unknown words falling so fast from unfamiliar lips. Saris swirling an eastern tarantella from here to there, and color splashed out on everything; mosquito nets and elephant blankets and showers more like buckets, in the end. Meals made to be, expected to be, eaten with hands. A piercing heat that stifl es your very air, but fi nding just the same that you catch your breath at every corner, every new discovery; every action song, every hungry touch, every shyly-served cup of chai.

India, day one.

Our preparations for Truro’s inaugural trip to South India equipped each of us with a sense of purpose, and fed us with a sense of “why mission”: but that in itself was not what it was really all about. What we didn’t—and couldn’t—learn in the Gunnell House is that mission is more than a teaching. It’s more than a mastery of material, and more than a servant’s heart. At its core, it’s about the Spirit. It’s about individual transformation, and real relationship with Christ.

In India we met the truth; we met God in the face of strangers. In foreign churches eighteen hours and a bumpy car ride from home, we saw God in a radically new and honest way. He was present in the worship and the prayers, in the vitality and in the faith. He was the core of each new relationship. We taught, certainly, but our preparations fast proved an undercurrent, a striking subtext, for the trip’s real purpose. In teaching, we were taught. In listening, we spoke. In experiencing, we were found, and in opening our hearts, we discovered what it means to truly live our faith.

Mission is not about bringing Christ, but about fi nding Him. We arrived in India as strangers, swept up in a dance of sights and sounds and new beliefs, but found therein a calmness and a comfort. Mission is where the Spirit meets the soul, and where God’s perfect grace is revealed beyond the limits of our learned understanding. It is an absolutely unparalleled experience, and will leave you changed in ways you never could have imagined.

Truro’s Annual Meeting will be held main church at 1:00 pm on Sunday, April 25, 2010. This meeting is the formal, annual business meeting of the Parish. We vote on new Vestry members, review Truro’s fi nancial standing and listen to our leadership address issues regarding our future.

Ballots for both the Vestry election and the ADV

Constitution vote will be issued to registered voters in Common Grounds from 12:30 pm until 1:15 pm.

Only registered voters may vote at Truro’s Annual Meeting. Letters were sent to all Truro members notifying them of their eligibility. Lists of voters currently eligible to vote are available in the

Welcome Walkway, Common Grounds, and Reception Room. If you are not sure if you are eligible to vote, please check the list. If you have questions about your eligibility, please contact Doug LeMasters, 703.273.1300 ext. 110 or Lorena Markowski (ext. 125) for information.

2010 TRURO FAMILY & FRIENDS RETREATMission and Family, the Heart of the Parish

Truro Retreat Registration Deadline TODAY!—Sunday, April 11

announcements

Being in Community My husband and I are planning on going to the Truro Friends and Family Retreat at New Canaan. Along with several other folks from our Home Group, we have rented a cabin and are really looking forward to the time away.

It is actually the fi rst church retreat we’ve been on since coming to Truro in 2001. Why is that, you might ask?

Here’s the short answer: Truro is in a season of change and transition and we are most eager to be involved. For us, New Canaan seems to somehow represent a very integral part of that “New Day,” if you will.

During our recent Lenten study, “Irresistible Invitation,” we learned a lot about Community. What a wonderful opportunity we now have to actually BE in Community away from the crazy every-day hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia and head up into the mountains of West Virginia. What better way to grow and nurture community than to spend time together away from the immediate stressors of every day life? New perspective can be gained, as well as new friendships and connections. We can share our hurts and our joys; we can laugh and perhaps even cry a little; we can pray and play, rest and relax. Our community will grow together in Christ and perhaps we will also be privileged to catch hold of (together) the wonderful vision that God is unfolding for Truro.

Won’t you come away with us for a while?

—Dan and Jackie March

Cookies Baked in Christ’s Love (Ministry Opportunity for Small Groups!)Truro member, Lyn Adams, has contacted Truro about a wonderful ministry opportunity. Lyn has been serving with Kairos Prison Ministry for over 15 years. Kairos goes into maximum security prisons to run weekend retreats for male and female prisoners several times a year.

April 28 - May 2, Karios will be running a retreat at the Virginia Correction Center for Women in Goochland, VA. Volunteers bake cookies for the retreat as a practical demonstration of Christ’s love. Cookies for the retreat need to be received by Lyn Tuesday, April 27. Instructions and recipes are available.

Would your group be interested in serving by baking cookies for the women who will be on this retreat? If so, you may contact either Lyn, [email protected] 703.385.9125.

Bake any recipe you would like, but please keep in mind that if we are to take each and every cookie into prison, we need to follow certain guidelines. This means that specifi c ingredients cannot be used. When baking, please remember:

NO—raisins or other dried fruit, NO—toppings (sugar, decorations or icing), and NO—candy such as M&Ms YES—chocolate and butterscotch chips and nuts

Cookies should be approximately 2–2 ½ inches in size. Package cookies 12 to a quart size ziplock bag. Please indicate the type of cookie on each bag. DO NOT package HOT cookies. Let them cool. They may be made weeks ahead of time and frozen—they still turn out perfect.

Truro’s Spring Arts Festival needs Volunteers! Opportunities include greeters, children’s activities, food court, just to name a few. If you would like to be a part of this community event, please contact Laura Workman 703.273.1300, ext 316 or [email protected].

PRAYER FOR THE PERSECUTED CHURCH—Hostility toward Christians in Northern Nigeria has been intensifi ed recently by the presence of radical Islamist groups. The apparent aim of some is to Islamize the whole country under the rule of sharia and to eradicate Christians from Nigeria. In the last two years, thousands of Christians have had to fl ee their homes, hundreds have been killed and dozens of churches have been destroyed. Just last month, an estimated 500 Christians, mostly women and children, were killed by machete-wielding extremists. You are invited to pray with others for Nigeria and other countries where persecution is occurring, in Truro’s Conference Room on Monday, April 12, at 7:00 pm. This opportunity for awareness and prayer is given on the second Monday of every month. Information: Alana Johnson on 703.772.3404 or [email protected].

LAST CHANCE FOR THE JERUSALEM PILGRIMAGE: If you want to participate in the 2010/11 pilgrimage to Jerusalem and have not taken the Alpha course, the last opportunity begins on Sunday, April 18. For more information, please contact Dave Lilley 703.273.1300, ext. 322 or [email protected].

READING GROUP will discuss Jon Meacham’s book “American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House”, Wednesday noon, April 28, in Common Grounds at Truro. All are welcome. Please bring a sandwich. Questions? Joan Meyer, 703.591.8617.

All golfers will receive a round of golf with cart, range balls, special gift package, breakfast, lunch and awards reception. For more information about sponsorships or volunteering, contact Laura Verinder, at [email protected] or 703.242.6016 or visit www.FiveTalents.org.

BE A PARTNER FOR TIPS ONE-ON-ONE—The weather is letting us know that summer is coming soon. TIPS (Truro International Programs & Services) will be running our international friendship partner program, ONE-on- ONE, for the third summer. Over the last two summers about 45 Truro members have been blessed by their involvement. The commitment is small: 1 Truro volunteer with 1 TIPS international, meeting once weekly for 1 hour, six times over the summer. You and your partner arrange the time and place. Additional information coming soon. Questions: Karen Kirk, [email protected] 703.273.1300 ext. 510.

Christian Stewardship Ministries Offers Life Management Classes

ADV Men’s Spiritual Life WeekendCourageous Leadership; Empowered By The Spirit

June 4–6, 2010, Clarion Inn Resort, Shepherdstown, WVAwww.2010ADVMEN.comSpeakers include Bishops Minns, Bena, and Guernsey.Focus is on ministering power and encouragement to individuals

This month, Christian Stewardship Ministries (CSM) begins new Life Management Study (LMS) courses that help participants order their lives in line with biblical principles. The LMS can help you break free from things like overcommitment, procrastination, chronic tardiness, debt and much more.

The 12-week series led by a trained facilitator focuses on setting priorities, fi nding time for what’s really important and growing in your relationship with God. Each two-hour session includes practical tips and homework exercises to help you establish new routines and ensure the best use of your time. Meeting in area churches, including Truro, the course costs $95 ($75 for Truro members) and includes a student manual, a workbook and a copy of Ken Smith’s book It’s About Time!

“Two things God spoke to my heart through CSM were, ‘I want all of you’ and ‘Read my Word,’” said vestry member Jack Maier. “The LMS helped me establish a routine daily prayer life rather than a haphazard one and a

commitment to daily Bible reading.” As another LMS graduate put it, “More than about time management, I think the class is about making Christ the center of your life.”

CSM also offers personal coaching and help forming accountability groups that meet regularly to guide and encourage individuals, couples and business owners in reaching personal and spiritual goals. “Accountability groups take the principles of the LMS a step further as we meet to monitor the person’s progress in the commitments he or she has made to consistent prayer and Bible reading, giving, eliminating debt and spending time with family,” said Jack who’s participated in several such groups. “The structure and accountability for a period of time help the person fi nd new freedom and a deeper relationship with the Lord.”

To register for the upcoming LMS class or to learn more about accountability groups, call CSM at 703.591.5000 or visit the website at www.csmin.org.
