As we roll into the 25th year of the GLOCK Sport Shooting Foundation, we thought it would be interesting to look back over the years and record some of the highlights of a quarter century of shooting GLOCK pistols in safe and fun environments. To accomplish this, we called on “senior” GSSF staff - Cindy Noyes, Chris Edwards and Scott Gilbertson to come up with some memories of matches and people.

GSSF got the “go ahead” from Mr. Gaston Glock in mid-1991 and GLOCK, Inc. management began looking for staff to start and run the program. Mr. Glock wanted a competition program that was simple enough for beginners but would challenge experienced competitors and showcase the accuracy, reliability and efficiency of GLOCK pistols. One GSSF goal was to bring new people into the shooting sports so that shooters may then feel more comfortable trying more advanced shooting venues such as Bianchi Cup, IPSC/USPSA, and later IDPA. Around that time, the National Rifle Association was having great success with their “Action Pistol” program in the form of the “Bianchi Cup Match” and GLOCK consciously made decisions about everything from targets (Bianchi style) to awards schedules trying to draw out the best of all known shooting sport competition arenas (along with adding a few new ideas of its own.)

Chris Edwards was the original “Range Master” and scheduled the first match at the old Cobb County Police Range (now defunct) in north Cobb County, GA. Coincidentally, Cindy Noyes and Scott Gilbertson were volunteer Range Officers at that first GSSF match. There were 102 competitors and it was, to say the least, a “learning experience” for all concerned. Many employees and “friends of the company” volunteered time and ideas to move the program along. Tom Campbell of Safariland was one who made invaluable suggestions concerning course design.

There were four match stages at the time. All derived somewhat from the Bianchi Cup. They were the…

New GLOCK ReviewThis consisted of 5 NRA D-1 targets, interspersed with four steel “Pepper Poppers”. In later years this became the current “GLOCK ‘M’ stage.

GLOCK StandardsEach shooter had their own set of 3 targets. Multiple shooters shot on the same firing line at the same time. They started at a short distance, about 7 yards and engaged the targets. They then unloaded and moved back to another firing line at about 14 yards and shot another string of fire. They again unloaded and moved to a third firing line at about 21 yards and fired a third string. This stage was the basis for the modern “Five to GLOCK” stage.

GLOCK the Plates This is the only stage that remains unchanged from 1991 to this day. 24 - 8” plates at 11 yards.

GLOCK Mover This required the range have a Bianchi Cup Moving target apparatus. It consisted of several passes of an NRA D-1 target during which the shooter shot about 30 rounds. It was dropped from the GSSF program later in the 1990s as very few GSSF Host Clubs invested in a “Mover” apparatus.

At the time the Divisions were “Civilian”, “Law Enforcement”, “Longslide” and “Unlimited.”

“Civilian” was oriented towards the G17/22, G19/G23, and G20/21-class guns marketed at that time.

“Law Enforcement” was oriented towards Law Enforcement Officers using the same GLOCKs used in “Civilian”. Having been expanded to include military, firefighters, paramedics and other

THE GLOCK REPORT

“hazardous public service” individuals this division continues to this day as the “Guardian” division.

“Longslide” was directed towards the more competition-oriented GLOCK models G17L and G24. It continues today as the “Competition” Division.

“Unlimited” was created to give professional (sponsored) shooters a Division to shoot in (separate from the amateurs) and give competitors a Division where they could shoot radically modified GLOCK pistols.

Over the years, as more GLOCK models have been designed by Mr. Glock and his engineers, GSSF has created different Divisions for them in which to compete. This becomes a pattern with GSSF competition which continues to this day: new GLOCK model(s), different from those preceding, are folded seamlessly into GSSF matches. Of the current 10 Divisions, some of the most popular ones these days are the Subcompact (e.g.,G26/27, etc.), Competition (G34/35, etc.), Heavy Metal (.45 & 10mm models) and Pocket GLOCK (G42/43) Divisions; although all have their dedicated fans.

Several years before GSSF had introduced the “Match Meister” award. This was awarded to the best single score in the “stock” GLOCK GSSF Divisions at every match. By this time GLOCK had also retained R. Lee Ermey as a spokesman. Ermey, aka “The Gunny”, lends his name to the “Gunny Challenge” where GLOCK “Match Meisters” from around the country are invited to compete mano-a- mano (though there are now ladies in the mix) in a shootoff for large cash prizes. It continues to this day as an extra added attraction at the defacto “GSSF National Championship” match presently held in Griffin, Georgia

As of late March 2016, there has been a total of 743 GSSF Outdoor Matches with 205,367 total outdoor match entries. With an average match size for all outdoor matches over the past 25 years of 276 entries.

As GSSF marches on in the second decade of the 21st Century, the number of matches continues to increase every year with 55 outdoor matches currently scheduled for 2016.

GLOCK also authorizes the GSSF “Indoor League”, for matches held in indoor ranges affiliated with GLOCK’s Range Program; which has become a success unto itself and continues to expand. 2015 alone saw more than 500 Indoor League Matches with more than 15,000 additional entries.

But along with the successful numbers come the success stories and vignettes which all at GLOCK are grateful for. Preteens and octogenarians discover a shooting competition in which they can be successful. One GSSF competitor moves on to international practical shooting competition

and becomes a world champion. Indeed, GSSF has heavily influenced other shooting disciplines, and “Stock” or “Factory” gun divisions became the most popular around the world. People with challenging physical issues, from mobility to eyesight, have competed safely, successfully and happily in GSSF. And, gratefully, we have had moms and dads, sons and daughters, spouses, aunts, uncles, grandparents and significant others, all come out to a GSSF match for safe and fun shooting. At least one world champion shooter has taken his children to a GSSF match to introduce them to the range and match shooting; this and all the rest we are both humbled and proud to be a part of.

All the GSSF staff wants to thank Mr. Gaston Glock, GLOCK Senior Management in the USA and Austria, and most importantly, all the GSSF members past and present for making GSSF such a success over the last 25 years. Our plan is to keep our membership numbers growing, our members shooting their GLOCKs and for GSSF to continue to get bigger and better in every way!

If you are a new member you will need to join for a minimum of 2 years. When you receive your member packet you will receive a member card and coupon. They are located on the bottom of the welcome letter. You will receive one coupon per year as long as you are a current member. These coupons are automatically mailed around your membership anniversary date. If you are a new member joining for one year, you will not receive a coupon until you renew your membership. If you don’t receive your coupon, you can email us at [email protected] with your name and member number (if you know it) to request one.

How do I use my pistol purchase coupon? GSSF Pistol Purchase Coupons must be used at a dealer that carries law enforcement GLOCK models. If you have a dealer near you that sells to Law Enforcement you can contact them to see if they are participating in the program. If you do not know of any dealers near you, call the GSSF office at 770-437-4718 for assistance. A dealer locator can be found at http://us.glock.com.

I am new to GSSF and shooting competitions. What do I need to know? Everything can be found on our website, www.gssfonline.com. For new shooters it will help if you read the sign in procedure, “GSSF made easy,” and new competitor briefing. Those are located under the “Hot Topics” link. You can only shoot each division one time per match. If you want to shoot more than one gun you need to shoot different divisions. If you still have questions you can email us or you can call 770-437-4718.

Can I pre-register for an Indoor League Match? You cannot pre-register for indoor league matches. You will need to register at the match. You can also join or renew at the match.

If I do not pre-register for an outdoor match can I still shoot? Yes, you can register at the match and join or renew. If you pre-register, you won’t have to stand in registration lines at the match. If you are pre-registering please note that pre-registrations have to be into GSSF by noon, Eastern time, the Wednesday before the match. That gives staff time to get all paperwork packed and ready to go to the match.

Can I bring a friend to watch the match? Yes, they will need to stop by registration and sign a liability form. They will also need to bring hearing and eye protection with them.

When will the match results be posted? The preliminary results will be posted soon after the match. If there is an error in your results please email GSSF with your name and the match name. Please let us know in which division and which course of fire the error is located. The match will be finalized in approximately 4-6 weeks. If we have a heavy match schedule it will take longer to finalize matches. Once the match is finalized you will see the prizes for that match listed with the scores.

During the Okeechobee, FL GSSF Match held at the Okeechobee Shooting Sports gun range on April 2nd and April 3rd, a contingent of seven ladies dressed in purple from the Well-Armed Woman Club showed up Sunday morning to compete in their very first GSSF Match. The ladies were attending The Well-Armed Woman Florida 2nd Annual State Shoot which was held at a nearby range.

The ladies showed a great interest in what GSSF means and were eager to shoot the match with their GLOCK pistols. GSSF Rangemasters Chris

Edwards and Phil Alexander explained how a GSSF match works and they even helped them by giving shooting advice. The ladies then ventured out on the ranges to shoot their entries. When the ladies were competing they were cheering and supporting each other. When the smoke cleared and dust settled, the ladies were glad that they came to shoot the GSSF match. Next year at the Okeechobee GSSF match, there will be more members of The Well-Armed Woman Club to show up to compete. So watch out!

Well done ladies!!!

Records were broken again with a tremendous response to the GSSF match held at the great Okeechobee Shooting Sports facility. There were over nine hundred entries (923 current count) who addressed the standard GSSF courses of fire of cardboard and steel targets. Standing out amongst the mass of shooters were a distinguished group from the Veritas Training organization, both men and women competitors, and a number of ladies from the Well Armed Women’s movement. The latter group had enjoyed a shooting Saturday at another location and were told about the match by GLOCK representatives present. They made the notable decision to test skills in practical competition, aka the GLOCK match, and we commend them for their enthusiasm.

Competitors arrived from all over the country and local heroes were also present. Center hits and blistering steel runs were the order of the day.

Andrea Boone was the fastest lady in the GLOCK Girls Side Match, with Andy Newton at the top of the Amateur Civilian group, and Mark Suchy was “Top Guardian”. Brian Dover smoked the course in Master Stock with a total time of 36.32 seconds! Of special note is GSSF’s own Phil Alexander, who achieved a personal goal of sub 60 seconds in the “Pocket GLOCK” Division.

Brian Anderson led a capable and dedicated RO crew who stood through heat and humidity one day and a bit of a chill Sunday morning. We thank all the volunteers for their efforts and appreciate the outstanding hospitality of the range.

See you at the next shootout!

THE GLOCK REPORT

American Heritage Gun Range and Training Center (AHGR) is located in McDonough, Georgia which is 26 miles south of Atlanta, GA.  The facility provides a variety of products and services to meet the needs of any level of firearms owner. The facility includes a 4,000 square foot showroom equipped with firearms, accessories, ammunition.

We are extremely honored to have been chosen the 2015 Glock Range of the Year.  This could not have happened without the support of GLOCK, Inc. and our competitors.

We sincerely thank you all for your support and patronage.

This an exceptional thing that AHGR does for their GSSF shooters. I am proud to be a GSSF mem-ber and shoot the matches at AHGR. The staff and associates go above and beyond to accommo-date the GSSF matches and shooters. J.M.

The staff and GSSF associates of AHGR like Steve Neale and Glenn Webber have been a big help in my shooting skills and helped me to win first place Junior for the month of August 2015.  M.N.

I want to vote for American Heritage indoor range of the year for their continued support of new and old shooters, and for running the three matches in a month  making it more interesting for shooters. They also have a super staff!!M.W.

My wife and I really enjoy being a part of the Sunday afternoon Glock shoots. Everyone is friendly and helpful. Safety is always number one. This is a first class activity and American Heritage Gun Range is a world class range. Thanks to everyone that makes this possible and for all of your hard work.

J.M.

I cast my vote for American Heritage Gun Range and Training Center for the range of the Year 2015. AHGR has become one of my favorite ranges. The staff are friendly, the range is very nice, and it makes me feel like that’s where I belong. Shooting the indoor GSSF matches has helped me with my outdoor shooting skills and has definitely helped me improve on accuracy!

Pistol Giveaway WinnerI drove 320 miles one way to shoot a GSSF match at this range for my first time there, and for GSSF’s first time there. I just want to say it was really fantastic. I may have shot poorly myself, but it was so good to see so many new faces enjoying themselves and having a great time. All the new staff doing this for the first time did a fantastic job. With what I saw as so many were new shooters to GSSF, the staff was doing a great job keeping them in-line.

I think that GSSF choosing this range (though out of the way) opens up a whole new opportunity for people to become involved with firearms, GLOCK in particular.

Thanks for putting on this new match at a new range here in California.

Hopefully I’ll shoot better, but I am signed up for Yolo, CA and will be for Richmond, CA this year.

PPCalifornia

I’ve always wanted to compete in shooting sports, but at various points in my life when I had the time I didn’t have the money and when I had the money I didn’t have the time; the stars just never seemed to align. Several years ago I lost my sister to cancer; she was 35 years of age. Naturally, her loss was difficult on me and my family, but out of that sorrow I vowed to never live a life of regret and I’ve embraced every challenge put before me since then.

I was no different than many folks contemplating competitive shooting. I wanted to practice and become a better shooter in order to compete. I had numerous reasons for not starting, none of them were good, but I think my reluctance was purely driven by anxiety. I’ve always fancied myself a good shooter and perhaps I didn’t want to discover that

I was wrong. Over the 25 years that I’ve owned handguns I’ve taken numerous defensive pistol courses and handgun instruction as well as firing thousands upon thousands of rounds. Despite being good on the range and in training, I still had anxiety and wanted to practice before competing. Reflecting on the vow I made, I realized that one does not get better in order to compete; rather, one competes in order to get better.

Throwing caution to the wind, I signed up for my first match. Slowly my anxiety faded, or so I thought, and I was determined to show GLOCK that they had a shooter waiting in the wings should they need another member for Team GLOCK. Of course, things didn’t go according to plan and as soon as I prepared for my first stage my hands were shaking and I was as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. “Shooter are you ready, standby, beep,” and I began to fulfill a goal nearly 25 years in the making; I was competing in shooting sports! The event was fun, exhilarating and nerve-wracking. After finishing my first stage, in my first division of the day, I proceeded to “unload and show clear” and stowed my gun in my range bag. As the range officer called the range “cold,” I stepped back waiting for balloons and confetti to fall from the sky in celebration of my shooting prowess. I suddenly grew concerned that I made a mistake and accidentally registered in the Guardian division rather than Civilian division. The range officer must have thought I was in the special forces and kept asking if I was “delta.” Naturally, I shook my head negative, but he persisted “delta, delta, delta,” by the time we reached the back of the stage I realized it was impossible for us to have traveled a “Mike” - oh bother. I had numerous hits in the D-zone (3 seconds of added penalty time for each) and a miss (10 seconds of added penalty time). How could I miss an 18”x30” target? Needless to say, Team GLOCK wouldn’t be contacting me any time soon. Since I drove nearly four hours to participate in the match I decided to take full advantage of the experience and went back to the registration area to sign up for more

THE GLOCK REPORT

divisions. It was an exciting day full of ups and downs. As I made the trek home, I replayed the day’s events in my mind and two things became abundantly clear: I caught GSSF fever, a malady for which there is no cure, and I needed to become a better shooter at distance, which was a goal I set that gave purpose to my practice in the months that followed. Several weeks later the final results were posted and I received a pleasant surprise by winning a drawing for a random gun. I guess sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.

In addition to the goal of becoming a better marksman, I set objectives that I wanted to achieve competitively. Initially, they were small things, such as shooting a match without a miss, or a delta, but I also set larger goals. I wanted to win a division at an outdoor match and get promoted into the master class before the end of the year and I wanted to shoot a 500 at an Indoor League. I met the first objective over the summer, finally winning a division, and over the last few matches I managed to take first place a couple more times, as I met my second goal of getting promoted to the master level in GSSF. I’ll be swimming in deeper waters at future matches and my progress will likely be more incremental, but I’m looking forward to the challenge. Additionally, I’m still pursuing my goal of shooting a 500 at an Indoor League event and I’ve been knocking on the door with scores of 496 and 498, but the elusive 500 has yet to answer.

The purpose of this letter was not to throw my shoulder out while patting myself on the back; rather, it was to highlight all that is good about GSSF and why I’ll remain a lifelong, loyal customer of GLOCK. I’ve taken full advantage of my GSSF membership by attending the GLOCK Armorers Course, utilizing the discount purchase coupons from GSSF to buy a few guns, and competing in numerous GSSF events. My participation in the events has resulted in free guns and cash awards. More importantly, however, I’ve made lasting friendships and fulfilled my dream of shooting competitively. GSSF is a fantastic sport which appeals to me because it’s a pure shooting sport that balances speed and accuracy. Outcomes

aren’t determined by extraneous variables such as how fast a person can run from one area to the next within a stage, as is the case in other shooting sports, which makes GSSF accessible to a larger audience of competitors. It offers something for every level of shooter from the novice to the pro and can be enjoyed equally by both men and women as well as junior shooters and senior shooters alike. Competing in GSSF has become a big part of my life and I’ve traveled 450-500 miles to attend matches.

I’d like to thank GLOCK for providing GSSF, as well as commend the employees of GSSF and the volunteers for their professionalism, courtesy, and tireless effort at each and every match to provide GSSF members with an enjoyable experience. No other gun company has done more for their customers, in my opinion, and I for one am truly thankful.

I bought my first GLOCK, a G26 Gen 3, in December of 2013. I was immediately hooked on the accuracy, reliability, and performance of this pistol. In 2014 I discovered GSSF and began attending matches. I have shot at matches in Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, Georgia, and Florida. Also, my GLOCK collection has grown. In addition to the G26, I now own a G17 Gen 4 and a G34 Gen 4 Modular Optic System (MOS). I have outfitted this competition gun with a Leupold reflex sight. I haven’t yet shot this gun at a GSSF Match but when I do I expect that my accuracy and match times will be significantly improved. Thank you for manufacturing a great pistol and for arranging all of the GSSF Matches. The matches are a family friendly environment in which to improve my shooting skills and I look forward to attending several matches in 2016. RAIllinois

GSSF is really great for those that are new to the sport. The GLOCK representatives here were awesome.

It’s amazing how easy it is to get comfortable with the guidance of some great ROs. They are excellent at making sure the participants have a great time, are comfortable and shoot safely. I was glad to be able to work with them on that side here at Orlando, my home base.

We had many locals from the club as well as some good folks that go to a few matches around the country. Made some good friends there. I look forward to seeing them at future GSSF events too.

I am a student at the University of Florida and a collegiate competitive shooter. I am a 3rd year Business Finance Major from Sarasota Florida. I have been a member of the UF shooting sports team for almost a year now and I still remember my first ever practice that I went to. Our team captain had a spare GLOCK 17 Gen 3 and he let me try it at that practice. GLOCK was the first gun I ever picked up and since that time I have not shot a single handgun that I would pick over a GLOCK. I have a feeling that just as the first gun I ever shot was a GLOCK, the last gun I will ever shoot will be a GLOCK. In my last year I have been selected as the Vice President of Finance and recently was elected Captain of the first ever Florida collegiate USPSA team. I have become a C class Production shooter (missed B class by 3 points). In this time the local range that we practice at has been kind enough to loan me an old GLOCK 17 as the original captain has graduated. I am hoping to move to Limited in the next few months if I can save up and purchase a GLOCK (hopefully 40 cal. minor) of my own.

I recently heard about the GSSF from some friends and decided to drive over and check it out. I go to school in Gainesville, Florida, however my first

match was in St. Augustine, Florida on 11/07/15. I preregistered and headed down early Sunday morning to shoot the match. I woke up early and commenced my pre-match rituals. Our home range is close and has someone there 24/7, so I drove over and picked up a GLOCK 17 that I would be shooting that day. As I returned home, I brought all of my gear inside, talking a few minutes to strip the GLOCK down, inspect it, lightly lubricate and reassemble it. I made sure to take inventory of my competition belt, holster, magazine pouches, magazines, and ammunition. I soon loaded my gear up and set my GPS for American Tactical Arms Training in St. Augustine Florida. I arrived a little after 11 am and checked in. Everyone was super welcoming and the staff was helpful in getting me oriented with my first GSSF match. I loaded my mags up and went down to sign in for my first stage. The night before, I researched the various stages and read through the rule book. Right as I was on deck for my first stage, it started pouring rain. There was a very slight delay and they determined that there was no lightning in the area, so we continued. Throughout the rest of the day, I met a lot of really nice people, engaged in some friendly competition, and fought off the rain to keep shooting. During a normal USPSA or IDPA match I usually do not enjoy shooting in the rain as everything gets drenched, however I had so much fun shooting the GSSF match, even in the rain. I ended up finishing in the top 18% of my division which for that weekend had about 210 shooters. I considered this a very successful first match. I did not finish first, but I had the most fun I have had at a shooting match in a long time, met some friends, and found one of my new favorite shooting competitions. I am already planning to compete in every GSSF match in Florida in 2016 (and if I’m lucky, maybe even some in Georgia). I am extremely excited to see where the 2016 season takes me and I look forward to many more with my new GSSF family.

THE GLOCK REPORT

Last year I purchased a used Gen 3 G22. I was looking for an affordable, quality pistol for defense. The price was right, and I had always wanted a GLOCK, so home it came with me. Prior to my purchase I had never heard of GSSF and had never been involved in competitive shooting. I enjoyed shooting my new (to me) pistol at the local range, and when I saw that there was a match not too far away from me in Topton, PA, I decided to give it a try.

To say my scores were not competitive would be generous. I was terrible. My obvious lack of ability, however, did not stop the GSSF staff and range officers from being extremely helpful and friendly. When they found out I was a first timer, everyone patiently explained every stage and procedure. The other competitors were also helpful, and I came away with a lot of great advice.

While I certainly didn’t shoot well enough to earn any prizes, I did land a 2 year membership extension, and just this afternoon I used the accompanying pistol purchase coupon to pick up a G43. While I was at the local shop, I saw that there is a match even closer to me in Bridgeville, DE this Spring. I cannot wait to use both of my GLOCKs at both matches in 2016, and I intend to then purchase an M1 through the Civilian Marksmanship Program and get involved in a nearby military rifle competition.

GSSF is a terrific gateway to competitive shooting and I can’t thank you enough for providing such excellent competition and resources.

After trying one of the G42s at the GLOCK Annual Shoot, I decided I wanted to get one of these new pocket sized GLOCKs. My first stop was my local gun shop to compare in hand the G42 and the G43. Between the two, I liked the feel and the ballistics of the G43. I think like many my next stop was to look online for reviews and videos to see the results of people who own or are testing

these. What I found was somewhat disappointing. While several reviews did look at these pistols in the role they were designed for, many of the complaints were that the gun capacity was too low, the grips were too small etc. and were comparing these to the larger, higher capacity model GLOCKs. As an engineer, whenever I use a new tool my first question is what was it designed to do or how is it built to be used. My go to example for explaining this is asking if, at your work or your home, do you have a tool box? If so, do you have 1 or more screwdrivers in your toolbox? Most of the time people do have an assortment of screwdrivers because there are different tasks in which a small screwdriver would not be able to loosen a large screw and vice versa. It is for this reason that most people do have a set and they use these tools to match the task needing to be completed.

In the case of GLOCK pistols, if you want a large grip, large capacity pistol, then carry a G17 or even G34 (or other caliber equivalent) using either open or concealed carry depending on the laws of your area or your personal preferences. Looking at these designs they have longer barrels for increased accuracy and double stack magazines to have as many possible rounds in a grip that will easily fit an average person’s hand. Note I do not say: “to be the most concealable”, but “to fit an average person’s hand”. As another option, if you want a higher magazine capacity version of the G43, which you do not plan on pocket carrying, buy and carry one of the G26’s. The only big differences between these two, besides the magazine capacity, is the thickness of the slide and the grip width.

Now, if you look at the GLOCK 42 and 43, what were they designed to do? Comparing them to the models listed above you do give up magazine capacity however you gain a reduction in both widths of the grip and the slide. To me this points toward the ability to increase the concealability of the pistols above and beyond what you get in other GLOCK models. These would be pocket pistols or an increased low profile belt concealed carry option. If you cannot, or do not want to, carry a pistol on your belt you can still have a method of

Page 42: thAugust 13-14 Billings, MT Magic City GLOCK Challenge Billings Rod & Gun Club billingsrodandgun.com 2931 Rod & Gun Clud Rd Billings, MT 59106. August 13-14 Greeley, Colorado Rocky

self-defense on you. I think possibly the only thing that all gun enthusiasts will agree on is that having a method of self-defense on you when you need it is better than none. The tradeoff is magazine capacity and grip width to gain something that you might be more likely to have on you when you need it.

I’ve owned a GLOCK 21 that I have carried for several years now. I finally decided to join the GSSF in December of 2015. Rather than waiting for another match to come to Atlanta I saw that there was one in Orlando. As it happens my brother in law lives down there and it was his birthday weekend.

The setting was right for a road trip. My wife and I packed up and were joined by my mother in law and our dog for a long weekend with family and GLOCK. We left the dog with my brother in law and my wife and her mom decided to join me for the entire time I was at the match. We weren’t sure if we were going to make it, so I ended up as a walk up registrant but was pleasantly surprised at how smooth the process was, though next time will definitely pre-register.

We arrived a little later than planned on Saturday morning, about 10:30 or so. I was able to sign up and quickly knock out the GLOCK the Plates match for the two divisions I signed up for. I had never shot steel before and had a blast even though I left a couple plates up during my Heavy Metal division shoot. My wife thought it looked fun as well and tried her hand at the warm up rack. She is now interested in competing at the next competition with me. This means we will probably be shopping for her own GLOCK pistol sometime soon.

The next two events took a little longer to finish, but everyone waited patiently with me to see the rest of the match, even though I said they could leave if they wanted. We enjoyed some barbecue

and the great weather while waiting to get called up. I was able to do Five to GLOCK after lunch which I was more comfortable with and did slightly better at, except for the fact I only loaded 9 rounds during one string and had to suffer a penalty as a result.

After getting warmed up in the first two events I was ready for the third and final: GLOCK ‘M. I was able to breeze through this without much trouble for which I was pleased. I finally was able to finish a match without a mistake so I left on a high note. My wife and mother in law enjoyed themselves and had fun watching the event. They will probably both be back, possibly even competing as well.

This Christmas I received wonderful gifts from my husband and all of them were purchased from your online GLOCK store! He gave me a range bag and had it embroidered with my initials in pink. I also received a GLOCK Girls hat and T-shirt.

This year I plan on shooting in 5 GSSF matches and I’ll be wearing my new outfit! I can’t wait to reconnect with friends that I have made during the last 2 years of matches.

Thank you for everything you do to provide a safe, friendly, family environment in which to shoot. ETIllinois

I had a great time working and shooting at the Central Florida Ballistic Challenge XIII. It was my first match ever, so I decided to go all in and volunteer as a range officer for all three days. I was nervous and didn’t know what to expect, but the friendly and professional GSSF crew and the experienced range officer volunteers taught me everything I needed to know. It was awesome to see the professional shooters, but I was most

impressed by a father and his teenage daughter who had only been shooting for three weeks. The range officers took their time with them and made sure the process was both enjoyable and safe. Mark from GLOCK stressed at the beginning that GSSF events are for beginners, as well as experienced shooters, and this really proved it. They both did really well, and I’m sure they will most likely compete in future GSSF events. I know I will. Thanks for a fun and safe weekend of competition.

I’m 67 years old. I joined GSSF Sept 2015 for 2 years. I purchased a Gen4 GLOCK 19 with my purchase coupon. I went to the match at Tallahassee on Sunday just to watch to decide if I wanted to participate in the future. I didn’t get there till after 12:00. At registration while filling out the waiver just to watch I was asked if I was a member. When I said yes they asked why I wasn’t competing. I told them I have never fired the new weapon and just wanted to watch. They were very friendly and suggested I go look a little then come back and register before 2:00. At each station I visited the range personnel were very friendly and all encouraged me to go register and come shoot.. They all told me as a first timer they would help make sure I was comfortable and safe. They all said just relax and have fun. So I did and I had fun. Range personnel and the competitors I talked with were all friendly and provided encouragement. I even got to meet a professional shooter at a GLOCK The Plates station. He gave me some pointers on how to shoot and on getting some glasses made with the bifocal on top so I could keep my head level. In fact his report time was ahead of mine but he let me go ahead of him since he was shooting multiple divisions and I was only doing one. My initial goal was to watch and see if it was something I wanted to do. Once I registered my goal was have fun but don’t be last! Well I did have fun and in the Civilian Amateur Division I was 143 in a field of 156 so I wasn’t last. I didn’t

even mind the 150 mile drive home. Overall a very rewarding experience. Hope to compete in the future after some range time with the new weapon.

I do real estate appraisals and sometimes work takes me into some rough neighborhoods.

One time in particular I was set to go out and appraise a home in a bad neighborhood that was being repossessed. The house was said to be empty and a lock box was on the front door.

My routine for jobs like this is to go to the front door and open the lock box and get the key out and open the front door and leave it open while measuring the home. I make my presence known by knocking loud and stating who I am and what I am doing there. As I am measuring the house I will knock on every window I come to just to make sure if anyone is there they know I am there. Nothing worse than finding someone in a house that you thought was vacant.

This particular time I opened the front door and did not notice anything that alerted me. I was measuring around the front and on to the side and eventually the back of the home. When I got to the back bedroom window, there was a door on the interior of the home that was covering the window so I could not see in. In my head I thought that maybe someone had it there while remodeling or something and moved on along to finish measuring the home.

When I got back to the front door I noticed the attic stairs were down in the hallway. This alerted me right away because as soon as I stepped into the doorway my eyes were drawn to the attic stairs being down and I thought to myself that I would have noticed that when I unlocked the door and opened it upon first arriving at the home. I called out “Hello, Real Estate Appraiser” and again no one answered. I was on a high alert at

Page 44: thAugust 13-14 Billings, MT Magic City GLOCK Challenge Billings Rod & Gun Club billingsrodandgun.com 2931 Rod & Gun Clud Rd Billings, MT 59106. August 13-14 Greeley, Colorado Rocky

Page 44

this point but still doubting myself that maybe I just didn’t notice the stairs down the first time so I went in and took my photos of the other rooms and as I made my way to the stairs I heard a bump in the attic. It was not a real loud bump and while it did spook me, years of experience has taught me that these repo homes stay vacant for months sometimes and animals do find their way to the attic so even though all of my senses was heightened I pressed on.

I went up the stairs and poked my head into the attic to take a couple of photos (we have to poke our head in and take two attic photos but are not required to go all the way in). When I came down the attic stairs I closed them and proceeded to the back bedroom that had the door covering the window.

As soon as I opened the door to that room I noticed a space heater plugged into the wall that was on, a pallet made on the floor that someone had been sleeping in, an IPhone charger plugged into the wall and a drink beside the pallet that still had ice in it. I immediately drew my G19 and backed out of the room. As I was backing out I pulled the bedroom door behind me closed and I could hear a loud commotion as if someone had busted out of the closet and was opening the door. I could also hear someone banging around on the attic stairs from the inside of the attic trying to get the stairs down. When the person finally got the bedroom door opened he saw me backing out with my gun drawn and he went straight down and started begging me not to shoot. I told him to stay there and I called the cops.

The people ended up not being armed and luckily I did not have to fire my GLOCK 19 that day. They were squatters who were staying in the house. They did find a person in the attic also. Had I not been armed maybe things would have ended way different that day. I am thankful that I carry and trust my life to GLOCK. This is the only time that I have ever had to draw my GLOCK and even though I didn’t fire it I believe that it saved my life because if I would not have had it and the other person would have been able to get out of the attic

they would have no doubt tried to rob me and/or more.

Thank you GLOCK for giving us such a reliable weapon that we can put 100% confidence in to protect our lives from people who may intend to hurt us.

I would like to take a second to say Thank You to the entire staff at GSSF. This past weekend in Alabama, I was able to spend some time with the red shirt crew, Scotty, and Willie. Scotty patiently took the time to go through my wife’s Gen 3 G19 and explain everything he was doing to the gun with her. What each part did, and why he replaced what he replaced. He is the greatest and the gun is like new. Willie was great. Expertise and confidence.

The red shirt crew is just phenomenal. The patience and kindness they showed to old and new shooters makes it easy to see why GSSF is such a growing sport, especially to the female shooters.

It makes me proud to be a member and happy to support the company and the organization.

Thank you so much for sponsoring events like GLOCK the Lake at Okeechobee Shooting Sports in Florida. It is my understanding they had the largest turnout the facility has ever had for a GSSF event. I was lucky and blessed to be one of the volunteers for setup on Friday and a Range Officer on Saturday.

These events require a lot of effort to get configured just right, all the distances verified and measured to make sure everyone is competing equally. When you are finished working a GSSF event you

are tired and sore, but it is a good tired and sore, you feel you accomplished so much. This is my second year doing this, as I write this, my feet are soaking, I have a cold glass of ice tea and just starting to relax, I am already planning for next year to do it again.

I can’t tell you how many people have asked me if it is worth it. My answer is yes, you better believe it is and it is not the goodies from you guys. It is the people and friends you make, not only the other Range Officers but the contestants.

Almost every shooter who came through my stage, when done, thanked each range officer and shook our hands. This is why we do it, because it reminds you that people are good and decent folks. New shooters and experienced shooters all said thank you.

To the GSSF crew, you guys are the best of the best, friendly, caring, never too busy to listen to a request or provide assistance. You guys do a great job of promoting the sport. Thank you for letting me be a part of these events. JCFlorida

After a year and a half of trying to convince our sister to come join us at a GSSF match she finally did. She joined us at GLOCK the Lake III at Okeechobee Shooting Sports and couldn’t get enough. She said “I couldn’t believe how friendly everyone was.”

We all had a blast and now have to explain to her husband why he can’t have his GLOCK 17 back!!!

I am writing this for people who seriously have the drive to become a great shooter. I want to share some things that I have learned over the years to help people improve their game. I am 33 years

old, and have been shooting for 24 years. I am a former infantry Marine, and a current federal law enforcement officer and firearms instructor. I have been shooting competitively for 10 years, mostly shooting USPSA matches, but I have shot some 3 gun and IDPA.

I heard about GSSF for the first time in February 2015. My first impression of GSSF was disbelief. I was utterly surprised at the amount of free stuff you can get! My father told me when I was a kid that if something seems too good to be true that it probably is, so I only purchased a one year membership. It turns out that in this case, my dear old dad was wrong! In my first outdoor match with GSSF I won a place pistol and an E-tool. Not bad considering I only competed in two of the several classifications. I didn’t even fully understand the classification system, if I did I would have definitely shot in the Guardian class, darn it!

My first piece of advice to a person who thinks they are a good shooter is, stay open minded and humble! The great thing about shooting sports is that usually arrogance is a self-correcting problem, because the minute you start feeling like you are untouchable, you get reminded real quick that you are not. I wish I could go back in time when I was shooting in military matches and listen and take notes from the old men who had been competing for years. They saw that I had potential and reached out to try to offer guidance to me, and I basically shrugged them off and continued thinking I was all that, while they took me over their knee (metaphorically speaking) in the matches. Staying open minded, for me, is the single most difficult thing to overcome. Learn new things?! Really? But I can beat everyone on my street, in my office, on my crew or in my fire team, why do I need to try this newfangled drill?

New drills, and fundamentals tests, bring me to my next point: Constantly challenge yourself. Do not allow yourself to grow comfortable with what you can do today. An old cowboy told me once, that if you can improve your horse 1% per day, well in 100 days you will have a decent horse! Work on correcting and mastering one flaw in your game at

Page 46: thAugust 13-14 Billings, MT Magic City GLOCK Challenge Billings Rod & Gun Club billingsrodandgun.com 2931 Rod & Gun Clud Rd Billings, MT 59106. August 13-14 Greeley, Colorado Rocky

Page 46

a time, developing your skills is a process not an event (another old cowboy saying from the same guy). For too many years I walked around like I was the cock of the walk. But I had never really been challenged, nor had I ever shot against a real competition shooter. Then I met him…….

He was certifiably insane to me, he ate, slept and breathed shooting. He was a former Navy SEAL, I have nothing but the utmost respect for SEALs and all Special Forces for that matter. But when I watched him shoot in a 3 gun match for the first time, my respect for him and his brethren was multiplied. I had watched an artist, a real professional, and I was inspired and humbled. He moved faster, and shot more accurately than anyone I had ever seen before, and I wanted what he had, SKILLS. For three years I watched and took mental notes on how he moved, I listened to the tidbits of information he would feed me, and I paid attention to what weapons he was running. He shot a G34, and he swore by it. I decided to buy my first GLOCK, a G35, because I happen to have a lot of .40 caliber ammunition. Today, after countless dry fire drills, range hours and matches, I can give him a run for his money.

If you are the best shooter in your circle, expand your circle! Find someone as good as or better than you and push yourselves. Discuss load recipes and drills, figure out what works and what doesn’t. You will improve his or her game and yours at the same time. For me it’s not about winning all the time, granted every time that buzzer sounds I am trying to win, but I get more satisfaction out of training and teaching others than taking home a new trophy. Occasionally someone I am training will say something like: “someday I am going to beat you!” I reply by saying “I hope you do.” And I mean it.

My last piece of advice to you is, be a student of the game. I know that sounds cliché, but it’s true. Being a student of the game doesn’t mean buying all the latest gear and trendy accessories, it means really studying marksmanship, history, and technology. You will never be done training

until you can run a stage and get a time of 0.00. I hope this was helpful, and I hope to see you next year during a GSSF match!

CSWashington

I had such a great time the last two times I’ve been to the Missoula, MT GLOCK match. Even though it is a 7 1/2 hour drive for me, the range is in a very beautiful, quiet, and wooded part of Montana. I always arrive early to talk and kibitz amongst other competitors and range officers. They were ready right on time and had the preregistration forms all ready to go. I couldn’t believe that I had gone through and shot my four different divisions, all before noon! This is definitely a testament to the organization and efficiency of the host club (Western Montana Fish and Game Association) and the GSSF staff. I ended up placing 12th in the Amateur Civilian and 11th in the subcompact categories. I look forward to seeing them again this summer!

I attended my fifth GSSF competition this past weekend in Orlando, FL. Although I am still new at this, I must comment about your staff and the volunteers I have met over the past year. I have not met a nicer group of people! From the people manning the registration, to the people on the shooting lines and everyone in between. I know the lines can be long, and those signing people in can meet with some crabby people, but they are dealt with very professionally.

There was an incident at the Clearwater event a month ago where a competitor was unhappy that our group was going to be tying up a multi-lane for a bit of time. He was visibly shaking, he was so mad. The RO in charge of the staging handled his complaint and bumped it up to a “Red Shirt”. The “Red Shirt”, handled the disgruntled competitor

calmly and professionally. Unfortunately for the competitor, he didn’t get his way and he moved on, but I for one, was happy with the results.

I am part of a growing group of shooters. We started in Okeechobee last year with three of us. I think there were 13 of us this past weekend and more are interested in joining us. I, for one, would like to say thank you for all you do to make this a fun venue where we can test our mettle! Keep up the good work!

Junior SubmissionI shot my first GSSF match at Talon Range in Midway, Florida in February, 2016. The match was well run and very organized. I had an extremely fun time and it looks like everyone else did also. The wait time to shoot was fast as there were plenty of stages set up. I also got to help out as an RO and have an appreciation as to the time and effort needed to run a match.
