MADu AWAnThI M ano Ratnayake stands out as a man of his word, if the recent surge in popularity of the Walauwa, in Melbourne, Australia, is anything to go by. Trevine Rodrigo, of the Lanka Times Melbourne, checked out the recent scene at the Walauwa and sent us this report: The Walauwa is making vast strides in its hospitality business, more due to its clever innovative methods and Mano’s promise that they will always strive to capture the guest’s imagination. “Our success has been teamwork and a commitment to ensure we deliver our plans at every function. For that, I have to admit that without my co-own- ers, Directors, Nash Samarakoon and Shehan Wijewardena, and the rest of our dedi- cated staff, this would not be possible,” said Mano. Competition is tight in Melbourne’s South- Eastern suburbs, with so many multi-cultural culi- nary venues, so the Walauwa’s entry, and cur- rent upsurge, must be commended in the face of such a challenge. He had a packed lunch crowd, at the Walauwa, in awe at his uncanny ability to make cooking an entertainment rather than a chore. To the beat of some catchy tunes (some of his very own recorded compo- sitions), the unusually talented Don Sherman performed an extraordinary theatrical version of his very own “Chicken Fried Rice” and ‘Ice Cream Kotthu’ which had his audience dum- founded. I would say he has to rate among the best celebrity chefs, in Australia, after that masterful perform- ance. Don Sherman has introduced a new dimension to cooking and with his back- ground, as a lively entertainer, rapper and writer of musical lyrics, to comple- ment his cooking masterpieces, it gives the Walauwa the ‘Wow factor’ that other establishments will find hard to compete with. He does a regular gig on Friday nights - his live performances showcas- ing his talents, outside the kitchen. Another exciting addition, to the venue, is the soon-to-be-launched WADIYA, built around a popular Sri Lankan concept of a seafood and cock- tail lounge for those tired workers, who can drop in for a quick tipple, and a bite of exclusive Sri Lankan-style seafood, while heading home after a long day at the office. The Walauwa has drawn some of the best entertainers, from Sri Lanka, providing music at a premium to back its quality service. Some of the stars who have appeared there include the legendary Desmond De Silva, Dalreen Suby, Manilal Perera, Victor Ratnayake, and the fabulous Replay 6, with Esric and Sandra.
