The decision, which has caused widespread dismay among teaching assistants, was taken at an Extraordi- nary meeting of the council on Monday 16th May. Earlier in the year teaching assistants voted over- whelmingly by 99.7% to turn down Durham County Council’s new terms, which will see some classroom assistants lose 25% of their current salary when they are forced onto term time contracts only. In papers submitted prior to the decision being taken, Council officials reported that independent legal advice suggested there was “a risk of equal pay chal- lenge” and that Teaching As- sistants should be moved to a “salary based on 37 hours per week / term time only from as soon as possible.” There was some opposition with Liberal Democrat, Cllr Owen Temple saying: “Legal opinion is just that, opinion. It is certainly not sufficient grounds for us to desert a group of valuable, low paid, largely female employees who deserve our careful consideration. “This is a sad day for democracy,” he added, pointing out that around 40 Labour councillors were absent from the meeting. One teaching assistant said: “I stand to lose £300 a month from my pay packet as a result of this decision. We were hoping to buy our house this year, but that won’t happen now. I don’t know how we’ll cope finan- cially. We’ve been badly let down by this council.” Of those who attended, 57 councillors voted to approve the plan, 18 voted against and 4 abstained. The new contracts are set to be imposed from January 2017. County Councillors vote to dismiss TAs Brownson, presented the various awards to the winners. There is no doubting who stole the show as centre forward Andy Johnson claimed all the awards after a stunning season of goalscoring, finishing with an impressive 38 goals. As well as rewarding John- son’s talents with the ‘Sup- porter’s Player of the Year’, ‘Player of the Season’ and ‘Top Goalscorer’ awards, Andy is now also the proud owner of the Heritage Award. The evening itself capped off a great season for the club, with the Two Blues finishing in 7th place in the Northern League having quickly improved on a variable first half of the season. Rob Bowron, Director of Football at Bishop Auckland FC said: “We were honoured to have Mayor of Bishop Auckland, Lee Brownson as our guest for the evening and would like to extend our thanks to him for being with us.

Victims at the heart of Police Commissioner’s second termVictims of crime and anti-social behaviour will have top priority throughout Ron Hogg’s second term of office, he announced at his swearing in ceremony on Monday 16th May.Emphasising this commit-ment, Mr Hogg said that he will now be known as Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner for County Durham and Darlington.Speaking at the ceremony to swear the oath of office at Durham County Hall, Mr Hogg said: “I will be working closely with partners in the public and voluntary sectors to ensure that the needs of victims are foremost as they progress through the criminal justice system.”He added: “Services should be customised to the needs of individuals. “For example, I want to bring in specific support services for victims of hate crime, and for those with mental health problems.“I have added the word ‘victims’ to my job title to emphasise how important they are, and I expect that local people will hold me to account for this.”Ron also indicated that he would continue to chal-lenge the Government to ensure that funding for policing in County Durham and Darlington is sufficient to meet local needs, and

that the threats of child sexual exploitation and cy-bercrime would also be key areas in his second term. The ceremony was attended by over 50 people including Council-lors from County Durham

and Darlington, providers of support services for victims, senior officers from the Police and Fire and Rescue service. The mini-police were on hand to help make sure the event went smoothly.

Volunteers prop up Kynren preparations

With less than two months until the launch of Bishop Auckland’s live action night show Kynren – an epic tale of England, the effort to create and source some 2,500 props is stepping up a pace. The Eleven Arches’ 30-strong Props Team, made up of volunteers from the local community, is in the process of making around 1,400 items to feature in the summer show.Among the many items that the team is tasked with creating are flails and hammers to be used during the Georgian Renaissance scenes, Roman shields and drums, quivers, crowns, spears and slaves’ cuffs. Every effort is being made to ensure that every detail of Kynren is historically accurate: Roman helmets are being created using vac-uum-forming with a mould from a real Roman helmet that was used in the Oscar-winning film Gladiator, and one volunteer spent over six hours painstakingly mixing paint to create the perfect imperial red for 90 Roman shields. In addition to the creation of props, Eleven Arches is calling on the good nature of the general public to donate or lend historical props for use in the show.So far, the public have

come forward with a wide range of items from musical instruments and bicycles to scythes and milk jars, however, the team is still

looking to secure a number of objects including bicycles and cars from the 1920s, fanfare drums and accordions.

He was followed along Walker Drive in Bishop Auckland from Crook.Police sectioned off Wood-house Close Estate for four hours in order to investi-gate the scene. One witness said: “We can’t believe what has happened. someone?”A resident of Walker Drive said: “The bike is a mess. I am really worried about the bloke. The fun, foamy team-building event will take place on 5th June at Witton Castle Country Park. This year teams are encouraged to attend in fancy dress!

Butterwick Hospice hosts foamy It’s a Knockout event

Butterwick Hospice at Bishop Auckland is once again hosting a fun, foamy, challenging team-building event called It’s a Knockout on Sunday 5th June at Witton Castle Country Park. This is the third year the owners of the park have hosted the event in aid of Butterwick Hospice. As part of the day there will also be a free family fun day for those watching friends and family take part in the event, which is open to the general public.Donations on the gate are welcome. There are only five places available for teams of ten people to take up the challenge of a series of fun, foamy and inflatable games, which are reminis-cent of the 1970’s televi-sion show.Teamwork is the key to

winning the most points and this year organisers are encouraging teams to take part in fancy dress.A spokesperson said: “This could be anything from an 80’s theme, the Wild West or characters from TV and film. So theme your team and, as an extra incentive, the best dressed team will win a prize!”

There is a team registra-tion fee of £10 per person and all team members are encouraged to try to raise £50 each in sponsorship. To book your place go to www.butterwick.org.uk/events/itsaknockout2016 or for more information contact [email protected] or 01388 603003.

“Lee himself has been an employee of the club in the past, and clearly un-derstands what the football club means to the local community. “The club would like to wish Lee all the best with future ventures when his tenure as Mayor finishes at the end of this month.”Chairman Richard Tremewan added: “We would also like to thank all our volunteers for all the work that goes on behind the scenes in delivering football at each level.“This was highlighted with a special award for ‘Vol-unteer of the Year’ going to Margaret Dixon for her continual catering efforts on match days. “We hope that this evening

Gaunless Gateway Big Local partnership –

It’s Big, It’s Local, It’s you, It’s me! The Gaunless Gateway Big Local Partnership wishes to appoint a lead organisation to support its work. The Partnership is a community-based proactive organization in South-West Bishop Auckland, made up of the communities of Cockton Hill, Henknowle, Woodhouse Close/Tindale Crescent, St Helens and West Auckland. The Area was one of the Þrst of 150 English areas chosen to develop and deliver a ten-year programme called the Big Local. To help with this the area has £1 million of resources from the Big Local fund which is administered by the Local Trust.

We have been supported up to now by Durham County Council (DCC), as our Locally Trusted Organisation, through the Shildon and Bishop Auckland Action Area Partnership (AAP). However, the next stage in the process is to begin delivering the range of agreed projects and activities laid out in our 2-3 year plan. These activities include a small grants programme, a pilot apprenticeship scheme in partnership with the Castle Development as well as more community involvement and engagement activities through partnership workers. To help us implement the plan we would like to invite a local organisation to act as our Locally Trusted Organisation (LTO) through an open and transparent process.

The core function of an LTO is to enter into a grant agreement with the national Big Local organisation (called the Local Trust) to receive and manage the grant of £1million as it comes through in phases in accordance with the agreed Big Local Plan.

Applications are welcome from organisations from all sectors. Key parts of the role are to manage the Þnances of the programme on behalf of the National Lottery and provide a range of support and assistance to the resident led Partnership Board. Our turn around is quite tight as we would like any appointment to start from the beginning of July 2016 after due diligence checks and take up of references.

Deadline for submissions is Tuesday 31st May 2016

For further details and application pack please email Jeanette Harold, Big Local Representative at [email protected]

BATTC has recently received a cash boost, in the form of £1,000, from Persimmon homes as part of the builder’s Community Champions scheme. Club Chairman Matt Porter said: “This funding is fantastic news for the club and helps us achieve our goal of becoming one of the best clubs in England. The news serves as recognition for the hard work our volun-teers put in on a daily basis and the dedication of the coaches and of course the players.”The Persimmon Community Champions initiative is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves. For more, visit www.persim-monhomes.com/charity.

Meanwhile, Bishop Auckland Table Tennis club (BATTC) is holding an open day on Wednesday 4th June for anyone to go and check out the new table tennis centre at Bishop Barrington School. Activities will include the Table Tennis Robot - with prizes for the winning scores - and Table Top Games with the Club’s award-winning coaches and some of the county’s top players providing hints and tips throughout. The Community Open Day will officially start at 10am and run through till 3pm. There’s no need to sign up, just turn up on the day and try a range of table tennis activities for free. For more information, contact Matt Porter 07411 018856 or [email protected].

BATTC receive funds ahead of open day

Sixteen-year-old Lee Tinkler from Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club (BATTC) successfully took park in the Burton Uxbridge 1* on Sunday 8th May and was a runner-up in the Junior Boys Singles. Drawn in groups of four, Lee started by beating Aaron Radford, James Laban and Saif Mohammed Aslam all without dropping a set. In the quarter finals Lee found himself 2-1 and 9-4 down to Mathew Blake from South Yorkshire before pulling it back to take the win with 3-2). The win led to a semi-final with Daniel Allen from Staffordshire and yet again Lee came through in the 5th set to reach the final. His opponent in the final was Chamika Weerasinghe from Kent. The number 17 in England was just too strong for Lee, winning 3-0. In other news, BATTC has this week launched new adult sessions which are open to all adults from total beginners through to league players.

The sessions take place on Mondays and Fridays from 7.30-9.30pm with no obliga-tion to stay for the whole duration. Sessions cost £3 each and will take place at Bishop Barrington School in the newly developed table tennis hall. Bats and balls are provided. St Mary’s latest resultsIt has been a weekend of cup finals and tournaments for St Mary’s teams.Three tournaments produced three finalists with two winners, and one runner up while two cup finals both produced runners up in close games. The U11 Kings had a fantas-tic win at the Darlington RA tournament, winning the final against 21st Allstars in a penalty shootout. The shootout went to sudden death with Jonny Robinson scoring and Jack Gallimore saving the next penalty to give St Mary’s the cup.The U9 Kings also had a great win in the Ferryhill Tournament, beating Dar-lington Spraire Lads 2-0, Hartlepool Whites 3-0, Newton Aycliffe Falcons 1-0 and Mount Pleasant Rangers 2-0 in the round robin to qualify for the semi finals. There they demolished Darlington TSC 5-0 and won the final in similar style, beating Spraire Lads 5-1 AET with goals from Noah Fawcett (2), Ben Crinion, James Whales and Cobie Woods.St Mary’s JFC under 13’s performed well at the Annual Blackpool Tourna-ment winning four out of five group games. Their only loss was to Coulton Juniors from Leeds who they eventually met again in the final. After winning 8-0 in the group stages, Coulton thought they were easy winners, but St Mary’s fought to the end with one of their best performances

of the weekend, only losing 1-0. On and off the pitch the boys were a credit to the club, their parents and most of all themselves. The weekend’s goals came from Regan Nixon (6), Jack Purdham (5), Joe Seymour and Joel Manuel. The U10 Kings, who are in the Third Division, played in the TJFA Challenge Cup final and were so unlucky losing after extra time against First Division Grangetown Boys Club. The U16’s played Stockton in the League Cup Final and it was Stockton who came out on top this time. The U16’s also played Stockton in the final game of the season to decide who would take the title of First Division Champions with Stockton needing a win to leapfrog St Mary’s. In a very close game with chances at both ends it was St Mary’s who scored the vital goal to win 1-0 through Cieran Jackson ten minutes from the end.In a fantastic achievement, St Mary’s won six games in the last two weeks to clinch the title. The U14 Aces played their last game of the season away, winning 6-2 to finish their season one point behind league leaders Stockton. The U7 Aces had a fantas-tic tournament away at Middlesbrough on Saturday 14th May and came away as winners. The U9 Kings played a good friendly match against Aycliffe with goals from

Cobie Woods, Dan Walton, Ben Crinion and James Whales. The U11 Aces played the U11 Kings in the Fred Anderson Memorial Match at Heritage Park with the Aces just edging it 2-1.The club now has eight teams at the TJFA pres-entation night as either winners or runners up in their leagues: U7 Kings, U8 Kings, U9 Kings, U10 Kings, U13’s U14 Kings, U14 Aces and U16’s. Additionally, the unbeaten U17’s won the Russell Foster League Division One and three teams reached cup finals in what could be the best season ever for the club. The U17’s play Gateshead Redheugh on Sunday 22nd May in the Russell Foster League Cup final at Sun-derland Nissan while both U7 teams play at Blackpool this weekend. Also on Sunday is the Claire Shaw Memorial Match, to be played at St Mary’s home ground with a 3pm kick off. The game sees over 60’s players partici-pating to help raise funds for Claire’s two sons, Danny and Ben Shaw, who both play for the club.
