COUNTY Ranked by parent company revenue in 2011 T HE 20 largest foreign companies headquartered in Los Angeles County represent a wide array of industries, from manufacturing to gro- ceries to retail property management. However, two of the top three compa- nies are auto manufacturers. Japanese companies Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. both have national headquarters in Torrance. Toy- ota ranks first, based on its $231 billion in worldwide sales last year. Honda had revenue of $97 billion. El Segundo-based Fresh & Easy was launched by parent company Tesco PLC in 2008. The large European supermarket operator created the brand to try to break into the U.S. market. It pledged to invest $2 billion to bring stores to the United States, and cur- rently has more than 195 locations in California, Arizona and Nevada. However, the U.S. operations have resulted in losses for the company and some investors have called on the com- pany to sell the Fresh & Easy chain. But Tesco believes that the chain can become profitable by next year. The Business Journal converts revenue to U.S. dollars. As a result, because of changes in currency conver- sion rates, revenue changes on the list do not match the percentage gains or losses that companies report in their currencies. – David Nusbaum NEXT WEEK The 25 Largest Retail Centers in L.A. County T OYOTA Motor Corp. is the largest foreign company with national headquarters in Los Angeles County. Nearly 30,000 U.S. employees report to the headquarters; they work in design, manufacturing, finance and sales for the Japanese auto manufacturer. Toyota’s annual pur- chasing of parts, materials, and goods and services from U.S. suppliers totals more than $23 billion. Toyota sells three auto brands in the United States. In addition to its epony- mous brand, it owns Lexus and Scion. Last year, the company sold more than 1.6 million new vehicles in the United States, down 7 percent from 2010. The company suffered from supply prob- lems stemming from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The Toyota Camry has been the best-selling model in the United States among all vehicles. The Toyota Prius, which debuted in 1997, was the best-selling hybrid in the United States. The company has 10 major manufacturing operations in the United States. Its largest manufacturing plant outside of Japan is in Georgetown, Ky., and has more than 6,000 employees. It builds the Avalon, Camry and Camry Hybrid, and the Venza sedan crossover. The facility also builds four- and six-cylinder engines and powertrain parts. Toyota first established a U.S. presence in 1957 with the opening of a sales office. In 1973, it set up a studio in Newport Beach, becoming the first major auto manufacturer to design cars in Southern California. It launched Lexus as a luxury brand in the United States in 1989. – David Nusbaum Lentz THE PACESETTER THE TRENDS Source: Business Journal research Globe Trots Origins of the largest U.S. headquarters of foreign firms in L.A.
