NEW LANDING FEE AT EWB I heard this tale>A member got a bill for a $10 landing fee at EWB after doing a touch and go. I called EWB and was informed that as of November of 2014 the min gross weight for a landing fee was lowered to 3000 lbs. $2.50/1000lbs (minimum $10). He did say that touch & gos probably would not be captured….Take note

ASSOCIATION DUES ARE DUE The March Plane Paper will be the last one you will receive if you have not yet paid your dues. Please remember this is “The Loudest Voice for Aviation in RI” and give us your support. Thank You

Attached is a Letter to Airmen that Providence ATCT is distributing in reference to our primary radar outage that begins next week on February 17th. Our primary radar will be out of service until the end of April. This outage is due to our radar being raised from 37 feet to 77 feet. A temporary beacon radar will be utilized, however, advisories will only be available below 3000 feet for aircraft with operating transponders. Additionally, two weeks after the shutdown next week and for the last two weeks in April this temporary system will not be available and no advisories will be available for aircraft below 3000 feet regardless. We do understand that this will be an inconvenience to our customers, however, in the long run the benefit will out weight the inconvenience by giving us much better radar coverage, thus providing better service to you, our customers. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to give myself or Cheryl West a call. David Blessinger, Providence Training Specialist Providence ATCT, 401-734-2810

 eMAIL BAG

The last two days of Feb finally allowed for some decent flying up to Bar Harbor in Maine and also to Alton Bay and around Mount Washington. Article by Greame Smith

41G pictured on national news

Slow news day – everyone seems to have picked this story up. My buddy Ken (quoted in the story) took the AP reporter up to get the pic. Lake Winnipesaukee ice runway draws pilots from around the Northeast. Planes are parked after flying in on frozen Lake Winnipesaukee on Saturday, in Alton, N.H. Dozens of pilots flew in to the only ice runway in the Lower 48 states approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. http://www.usnews.com/news/offbeat/articles/2015/02/28/new-hampshire-lake-is-lower-48s-only-ice-runway

In this pic:41G is parked nearest the camera on the right side with the big black cowl blanket on to get a warm start after lunch. I’m standing with the bigger group on the left side – obvious really…

By my departure after lunch they were out of parking and were having to stagger high and low wings with overlapped wings to fit folks in. It was so tight at departure that you couldn’t spin round to check the sky for NORDO’s on final (all those J3’s that show up on skis!). They positioned someone at the hold short with a handheld to look back up final for you and let you know it was clear to go. With TEN behind me in line – and just as I was about to depart a Bonanza driver made his third attempt to get in after two go arounds. He was hot and disappeared way down the runway. I saw the spotter watching and slump his shoulders in despair. The Bonanza driver came up on the radio and confirmed he was deep in the snow drift at the far end, still on his gear and OK. He was clear enough of the runway that I got my departure and then they sent a truck down to tow him out. It was a FABULOUS day for flying. Between Newport and Mount Washington (which we went up and circled) it was hard CAVU the WHOLE day. I never saw a spec of cloud anywhere all day and the pressure topped out at 30.79 in (1043 mb) as the high pressure drifted over the area. I was out for 5.9 with fuel stops at KASH – Nashua and KLCI – Laconia and it sure made up for days of keeping the plane dug out on the off chance of flying. My passenger – who had never flown small GA before – had a blast and is surely going to be disappointed the next time they go flying. It will never be so good for them for a long time!
