The Hare & the Tortoise KIERAN MCGOVERN

The quick hare races the slow tortoise. Who is going to win?

A hare and a tortoise once lived in the same wood. The tortoise was old

and quiet. When the sun was high he liked to sleep. The hare was very noisy. All he wanted to do was race the other animals. 'I am the fastest animal in this wood,' he said. 'Who wants to race me?'

The fox raced the hare - and lost. The squirrel raced the hare. He lost, too.

‘I’m greatest!’ the hare shouted. ‘I’m the best!’

Fastest? The tortoise was sleeping under a tree. ‘Hello, Slowcoach!’ said the hare. ‘I’m the fastest animal in the wood.’

The old tortoise opened a sleepy eye. 'Do you want to race me?' he said. The hare laughed loudly. 'You silly old fool! You’re the slowest animal in the wood.'

'Do you want to race me?' repeated the tortoise. The hare laughed loudly. Tears ran down his white cheeks.

'Oh, that's very funny!' he said. 'Where do you want to race?'

‘Across the wood,’ said the tortoise. ‘From one end to the other.’

SlowerAll the animals came to watch the race. Some went to the start.

Some waited at the finish at the other

end of the wood. They all wanted the tortoise to win. ‘But he’s going to lose!’ said the squirrel to the badger. ‘Tortoises are very slow.’

‘But they are also very clever,’ said the Badger.

The Race The race started. The hare quickly raced into the lead. He looked back and laughed. The tortoise was still near the start. 'What a silly tortoise!' thought the hare. ‘He can never beat me!’

It was a very hot day. The hare stopped. He felt very tired.

He came to a nice shady tree. ‘I’ll rest here for a few

minutes,’ he thought. ‘The tortoise will never catch me.‘

SleepThe hare sat down beside the path. He closed his eyes. Soon he was asleep.

When the hare woke up, the sun was low in the sky.

!

A squirrel came by. 'Where is that silly old tortoise?' asked the hare. 'He is finishing the race, now,' said the squirrel.

‘WHAT!’ cried the hare.

Finish lineThe hare ran across the wood. ‘Wait for me!’ he cried. But the tortoise was already at the finishing line. He crossed just in front of the hare.

All the other animals cheered. 'You’re not the fastest animal, Mr Hare,' said the tortoise. ‘But you are the laziest.’
