Report cards were mailed home this quarter, so please call the school if you have not received it. Wow, that was fast! The holiday season is upon us and before we know it, it’ll be the New Year! I hope you are all settled into the 2017/2018 school year and hopefully our students have become accustomed to their new schedules. We’ve been going strong for a few months already, but this may be a good time for a reminder that many students may still be adjusting to their new normal. The transition period for our 6th graders is possibly the most challenging. One of the biggest challenges is the two schools coming together - Princess Nahienaena Elementary and King Kamehameha III Elementary. These new students will be their classmates until graduation, and new, wonderful relationships will form, but in the beginning all the new faces can be a little intimidating. Coming from elementary school with one teacher to middle school where they now have eight different teachers to get to know can really be a shock for them. Some make the move smoothly while others may need more time to adjust, so be patient if your 6th grader is still having some difficulty with all of his or her new teachers. Also, traveling around campus for each new class period is new to our 6th graders. With more teachers comes more classrooms and, even though by now they probably have their new routes down, hiking around campus all day is exhausting! Don’t be surprised if your children are wiped out at the end of the day. Their classwork/homework is hopefully manageable - each 6th grader has a mandatory study hall and we provide them with an organizer to help with their transition into middle school. But if you are having some struggles, please don’t hesitate to ask for help. Email their teachers, counselor, or contact me directly. We have many resources to assist you. The transition period for our 7th graders is probably a little smoother than the year before. They are no longer the youngest class, and no doubt have the routine down. They do, however, still need some adjustment time with their new teachers and classes as well. Physically they may be maturing at a more rapid pace this year than last year, so if your child is a little less graceful and maybe a little bit forgetful, don’t worry it’ll pass. Not for a few more years, but it will pass! Eventually they’ll settle into their new bodies. Our 7 th graders are really learning about independence this year. As they gain independence, they gain confidence in their abilities as mature young men and women. Support and encouragement from their parents, teachers, and other important adults in their lives is necessary for their success. Our 8 th graders are finally in that position of seniority here at Lahaina Intermediate. Our upperclassmen should have a good grasp of what’s expected of them by now, but classwork will only get more challenging and completing homework may take more time and effort than in the past. Already, preparations for the transition to high school have begun. It’s not too soon to start thinking about and exploring the different pathways Lahainaluna High School offers. Still growing, these teenagers need lots of sleep and lots of good, nutritious food for fuel and to help keep focused. I trust that our 8 th grade students are using their knowledge and experience to help guide the younger classes and set good examples. I hope you have a Happy Halloween!!! Stay safe and have fun! 1

We’ve recently sent home results from the spring 2017 Hawaii Smarter Balanced Assessments with students. Please take a close look at your child’s results to get a good idea of their strengths and where they may need extra support.

Inside you’ll find their English Language Arts Literacy Score on one page and their Mathematics Score on the next. The top half of the page gives you their score and standard level, with an explanation of what that means. On the bottom half of the page they give you the results in more detail and suggestions for how you can help your child improve. Don’t forget to check out the back page for a scale of your child’s progress through the years. For your convenience, a list of helpful resources is also provided on the back.

Our students put a lot of effort into taking these assessments each year, so please share with them their results. Testing is done towards the end of the school year, be prepared for students to take the assessment again in April/May.
