Airtel Africa on Wednesdayreported 21 per cent declinein its net profit at $65 mil-lion for the quarter endedMarch.

This was against $82million in the correspondingperiod last financial year, mainly because of higherfinancial cost.

Airtel Africa’s total expe-nses climbed 11 per centyear-on-year to $658 mil-lion due to higher networkoperating costs, accesscharges, sales and market-ing expenses and biggerpayouts towards licencefees/SUC.

Depreciation and amor-tizations costs, though, rosemarginally by 1 per cent.

The African arm ofBharti Airtel posted 15 percent YoY rise in revenueand 1.81 per cent sequen-tially to $899 million, driv-en by contributions fromvoice, data and mobilemoney verticals.

“These results demons-trate the strength and resi-lience of our business andthe effectiveness of ourstrategy, with all three serv-ices — voice, data and mo-bile money — contributingto our revenue growth,”Airtel Africa CEO Raghu-nath Mandava said.

However, he added thatCovid-19 had impactedAirtel Africa numbers.

The bank has made provi-sions of ~713.7 crore on a con-solidater level due to Covid-19 ,which are higher than theReserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s)prescribed norms, it said.

While net interest incomegrew at a healthy 16.5 per cent, other income fell 37.8 per cent. This also led to the decline inpre-tax profit.

“In sector after sector, con-solidation is under way. Wehave seen it happening in tele-com, we may see it happeningin airlines, and I do believe sig-nificant consolidations shouldtake place in the financial sectorin the coming months andyears,” Kotak added.

“Customers’ concerns haveshifted, since people are wor-ried about what they’re eating,”said Banerjee. “With the newreality of social distancing, even if the lockdown is (lifted),people would still be wary for

some time before going torestaurants and malls.”

As a result, Rebel Foods saysit is witnessing tremendousinterest from hotels and restau-rant chains globally for its cloudkitchen model, and forging

India’s largest carmakerMaruti Suzuki on Wed-nesday said a return to

normalcy will take time as it istrying to solve issues regard-ing unavailability of workforceand alignment of productionby adhering to social distanc-ing norms.

“There is too much ofuncertainty currently to pre-dict when there will be a recov-ery,” said R C Bhargava, chair-man of the carmaker, highlighting that a substantialportion of the workforce hasgone away to villages. This hashit production.

“It’s not easy to get back themanpower which has goneback. The new social distanc-ing protocols also reduce pro-ductivity to an extent,” saidBhargava, when asked aboutthe time it will take for theindustry to recover.

Manual workers mostlyhail from Bihar and UP. Mostof them have left for their vil-lages as the lockdown has puta halt on economic activity, threatening their livelihood.

The company reported a 32 per cent year-on-yeardecline in profit before tax forthe January-March quarter to~1,575 crore largely becausedemand for its cars worseneddue to the lockdown, duringwhich there was zero produc-tion and sales. However,Bhargava said he expects themarket to recover by the fes-tive season.

“Definitely, during the fes-tival season, demand will be

higher than what the industrywill be able to produce. By thattime, we will be able to fine-tune on how to work with thenew safety and distancingnorms,” he said.

The company’s net salesduring the quarter declined17.1 per cent to ~17,186.7 crore. This is because of a 16 per centfall in total vehicle sales (in vol-ume terms) during the quar-ter to 3,85,025 units. Operatingprofit during the period fell

31.7 per cent to ~1,546 crorewhile margins contracted 200basis points to 8.5 per cent dueto increase in overall expenses.

Maruti, however, has notyet cut back on the plannedamount for capital expendi-ture. The company will invest~2,700 crore for the current fis-cal year (FY21). “We have towork for the long term. Wehave complete confidence inthe economy. We can’t affordto miss the capital expenditurethis year,” said Bhargava.

The carmaker, by virtue ofits strong presence in theentry-level segment, may bethe first to make a recovery aspeople could look to own a carin order to maintain social dis-tancing. But customers willnot be able to afford a higher-end vehicle as pay cuts and joblosses have become rampant.

“Categories such as two-wheelers, entry-level cars, tyres and batteries shouldexperience a revival in the sec-ond half of FY21,” said analystsat Dolat Capital.
