On March 30, 2018, Tom walked from Birchwood to the Devon bridge in freezing cold temperatures and died by suicide in the very early morning. Tom’s walk follows his path mindfully as we reflect on the importance of reducing the stigma that comes with mental illness and find ways to be more open and willing to talk about suicide in hopes that others do not meet Tom’s tragic end of life. This walk promotes Sashbear, a Canada-wide organization, and the skills-based program it endorses called Family Connections. For those who live with someone who suffers from mental illness, communication can be next to im- possible. Family Connections teaches skills that provide hope for the first time for many who attend the classes. These classes are offered free to all participants thanks to donations and support from activities such as this walk. Thanks for taking the time to listen.

We are having a walk in honour of our son who died by suicide last spring in Devon. Since this touches the hearts of our town and others so strongly, I want to find ways to share the story be-yond Facebook. Here is our story:

On Sunday, May 26, 2019, family, friends and anyone with a connection to mental illness and suicide will be walking Tom’s Walk in Devon, AB at 1 pm. Thomas Maxwell, a vibrant, talented, in-telligent young man, suffered from schizoaffective disorder which changed his and his family’s lives forever. Did you know: The Alberta Rhodiola Rosea Growers Organization (ARRGO) is a New Gen Co-Operative of farmers from across Alberta, who are collaborating on growing the nutraceutical agricultural crop Rhodiola rosea.

Did you know: The ARRGO Processing Facility in Thorsby processes the largest amount of sustainably-cultivated Rhodiola rosea in the world. Exports from Thorsby go across Canada and to the EU, USA, Asia and Australia.

Did you know: Rhodiola rosea is an adaptogen, that has been widely used for centuries in traditional medicines, for treating stress-related ailments and providing increased energy and health. This perennial flowering plant originated in wild arctic regions of Russia and Northern China. The original plant was wild harvested, almost to extinction, and has now been red-flagged as an endangered species, making the wildcrafted plant illegal to sell.

Did you know: We first began processing at the Thorsby facility in 2009 and ARRGO was able to purchase the facility in 2015 from the estate of an ARRGO member. The past two years have been the largest harvests in ARRGO history, with last year’s fall harvest processing approximately 116,000 kg of fresh roots from our farmers.

Did you know: This crop takes five to six years to mature in the field and is very labour intensive for the farmers. The demand is currently surpassing our supply and we are looking for new

Walk for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention“Tom’s Walk”

(In memory of Thomas Maxwell and all who suffer with Mental Illness)

Sunday May 26 at 1:00 pm in Devon, Alberta

Mental Health, Addictions and Suicide are terms that Kelly Maxwell, a teacher with Black Gold School Division, has had to learn about intimately. She tragically lost her 23 year old son, Tom, to suicide last year after a long battle with severe mental illness and addictions. She and her husband Stuart fought tirelessly to get the support needed for Tom and accessed all the tools available through AHS and other mental health supports. And though their story ends tragically, they are grateful for one thing, they found a free class to help them learn how to communicate effectively with Thomas’ severe emotional dysregulation. The skills they learned gave them a renewed HOPE for a relationship with their son before he died.

The class they took is called Family Connections. Family Connections is provided by the "Sashbear Foundation” (an all-volunteer Canadian registered charity). Sashbear offers these classes throughout Canada and have been in Alberta since the fall of 2017.

The skills taught can benefit anyone who lives with or interacts with someone who is emotionally dysregulated. These are practical and helpful skills that can be used in any relationship - with family members, spouses, friends, students etc. These skills brought peace into the Maxwell home for the first time in years.

All donations from this event will go to the Sashbear Foundation so that Family Connections can continue to be freely shared with anyone who needs it, whether they are a parent, spouse, friend, teacher, counsellor, etc. We can all use these skills to better communicate with those who struggle with their mental and emotional health.

For more information, to register or to donate prior to the "Walk for Mental Health" or the “Sashbear Foundation” please visit www.sashbear.org

You can register and donate on the day of the walk in Devon.

You can also email Kelly Maxwell at [email protected] if you have any questions or if you would like to volunteer the day of the walk.

. Please note that there are two "Sashbear Foundation Walks" for Mental Health on May 26 on the

website. The Devon walk begins at 1:00 pm (not 9 am).

Theft of Bottles

It has been brought to our attention and wit-nessed again that someone has been remov-ing the bottles out of the recycling blue bins that are around in the community. Entry to the locked bins is being gained by picking them out of the top with a pickup stick. We need your help to report these suspicious actives to the Town Office or RCMP.

The bins provide a crucial recycling opportun-ity to the community and the bins are main-tained by several community groups. These bins further assist with their fundraising efforts throughout the year. By someone taking them for their own personal gain is stealing from the community.

Please help us to resolve this concern and we ask that you keep a watchful eye. We appreci-ate any assistance you can provide.

Leduc County Hawkweed ProgramOrange, Meadow and Mouse-Ear hawkweeds are classified as prohibited noxious weeds under the Alberta Weed Control Act. These weeds have the ability to spread rapidly and completely overtake established ecosystems. Once established, these weeds are extremely hard to control and remove from properties.

What Leduc County is doing:Leduc County is taking a proactive approach by strategically targeting infestations of hawkweed less than five acres. Leduc County has a Hawkweed Spraying Program to give landowners an additional option in stopping the spread of these highly invasive weeds. The program covers all invasive species of hawkweed, including:

What you need to know about hawkweed:• It’s a perennial weed that has very high seed production and the ability to reproduce through lateral

stolons or rhizomes.

• Most species of hawkweed are characterized by low rosette basal leaves with a single stem growing up to 70cm and produces orange or yellow flowers that will bloom several times a year.

• Control options are limited. It’s recommended you use herbicides registered for use on Hieracium spp./hawkweeds or hand digging where all stolons and roots can be removed.

• If you are grazing livestock, hawkweed will decrease the amount and quality of grass available and will thrive in over-grazed areas.

For more information about the Hawkweed Program, please visit www.leduc-county.com/services/weed-control or contact Leduc County Agricultural Services at 780-955-4593.

Straight Out of ThorsbyFrom the County of Leduc, from Alberta and Canada, from Singapore to the U.K., from Aus-tralia to Holland, from the USA to Panama, Thorsby graduates are making a difference. This is the 22nd installment in a series of pro-files which indicate what a small school and community can produce. The people who conduct the interviews are Audrey Brosseau and John Elson. If you have. suggestions please contact John at 780-789-3822 or Audrey at 780-886-0658.

Small Town Success - ALLYSON BENDFELD

My family moved to Thorsby when I was 9 months old, in September of 1980. My brother came along a couple years later. I grew up on a dead end street, playing street hockey, tag games and biking around the circle.

By the time high school rolled around, I couldn’t wait to get out of Thorsby. Didn’t everyone know that there was a bigger and brighter world out there? As I look back on it now, the opportu-nities this small community provided, from the teachers I had at school to the coaches at the Complex, led me to where I am today.

I was probably always meant to be a teacher as I have been told by my mom (also my kin-dergarten teacher) that on the days she was away and needed a sub, Mrs. Brennan let her know that really, she didn’t need to leave plans, Allyson would let the sub know how the day would go. I truly did love my time at Thorsby Elementary. From Mrs. Pasula, I learned that hugs from the teacher were everything and that reading is fun. With Mrs. Wengberg, I gained an interest in technology (yay for Num-ber Munchers and Cross-Country Canada) and will never forget the boys playing Ninja Turtles on our end of year, Grade 3 camping trip to Pigeon Lake. Mr. Oswald made Math fun and Mrs. Knopp introduced the joy of music. The Grade 6 Jasper Trip introduced me to the world

of hiking, whitewater rafting and tenting. During my elementary years I also started play-ing hockey, mostly because of the influence of my mom because she was already playing with the Thorsby Gladyators. Being one of the first females to participate in minor hockey in Thorsby meant proving to myself and others that I belonged there as much as any of the boys. I was lucky to have Marian Filipic as my coach for the majority of my minor hockey ex-perience and he both encouraged and chal-lenged me when it was needed. In Atom, our team won in double overtime in front of huge hometown crowd to become one of the first in Thorsby in to make it to provincials. We made it again in the second year of PeeWee. By the time high school rolled around, basketball took a leading role and I quit minor hockey but con-tinued to play with the Gladyators until I gradu-ated.

Moving over to the high school also introduced me to teachers who truly loved the profession and made it look easy (I know so much better now how hard it truly is). Mrs. Sarai made me rethink how to look at literature and made me love Shakespeare. Mr. Bratland inspired a love of history, especially military history. Mr. Olsen made Math and Physics fun. Mr. Steenwinkel and Miss Brennan nurtured a love of music, and also jump started the travel bug by pro-viding the trips to Europe over Spring Break (I have since been to 20 countries and am head-ed to India and Nepal this summer). Mr. Kobe-luk, Lora Hart (Grade 10) and Eva Lynn Fossen (Grade 11 & 12) helped to take our high school basketball team to provincials. We won bronze in my grade 11 year. As a teacher now, I look back on what all these teachers modelled for me. Though education has changed a lot over the intervening years, at the end of the day, if the teacher cares about learning, cares about the children and does everything for the good of the student, that is what makes a wonder-ful learning environment. It is because of these great role models that I decided to become a teacher.

My teaching career has included a year in

Kinuso, AB teaching grade 5, a few months of subbing (where I got to go back into the Thorsby schools and sub with and for my old teachers) and brought me to Innisfail where I am currently the Inclusive Lead Teacher (spe-cial education programming) at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys school. In 2011-2012, I got to spend a year in Australia on a teaching exchange. In 2013, I was nominated for the Excellence in Teaching Award for our division.

After high school, like many Thorsby alum, I made my way to Augustana University College in Camrose. The plan was to make the bas-ketball team as a walk on player but I failed at that so played on the club female hockey team that had started just that year. By end of my third year, I had visited Ireland on a school trip, played in the inaugural year of the female ACAC hockey league and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts - History with distinction.

Next it was off to the University of Alberta for my After Degree in Elementary Education (which I eventually received with distinction). My hockey coach at Augustana had put in the good word for me with the head coach for the UofA Pandas and I was lucky enough to make the team as a walk-on. Making the Pandas has turned out to be my most influential life event to date. I got the opportunity to play hockey with and against some of the best players in the world. Having Howie Draper as my coach challenged me in ways that made me grow as a player and as a person. In my three years with the team, we didn’t lose a game in CIS (now Usport) competition and won three na-tional championships. It was also because of my participation on the Pandas that I became involved with Hockey Alberta, which started me on my coaching path. This path has led me to coach Bantam and Midget girls in Innisfail (where I currently live) to being a head coach at the Bantam AAA level in Red Deer to being an assistant coach currently with the Olds Col-lege Broncos (getting back to my ACAC roots). I also have many conversations about the pie at the Thorsby Complex. Everyone in the hock-ey world in Alberta knows about the pie.

Since 2002, volunteering with Hockey Alberta, from helping with evaluations for Team Alberta to mentoring young coaches, has led to getting to work with some of the best hockey minds in the province, if not Canada. I have been head coach for the Alberta Female Challenge Cup and for the Alberta Winter Games (in 2018 my team won gold in Fort McMurray). In 2013, I was assistant coach for Team Alberta where we won Bronze at the U18 Nationals in Calgary. Just this past year, I was the video coach for Team Alberta at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer where we won gold. The players and coaches I have worked with at these camps and competitions has helped me to grow as a player, coach and teacher in more ways than I can name.

I spent almost half of my life just wishing I could get out of Thorsby because it seemed like there were no opportunities. Luckily for me, the teachers and coaches I had in this small town nurtured the seeds of opportunity that were already in me. Because of the people who opened up the world to me, I now try to open up the world to the students and hockey players I influence every day. They all taught me that there are no dead end streets.
