When we see God as the sower, it's incredibly meaningful. It's wasteful for a farmer to throw seed away on soil that's not going to produce, but the farmer is so hopeful that He's willing to do it anyway. Jesus does not differentiate between worthy and unworthy soil; He throws as much grace and gospel seed as He can at us because He's just so consumed with a desire to see us be reconciled to Him. Ultimately, however, the church is sower. It is our job to be in the world sowing the seed of the gospel. If we desire to grow a bountiful crop, we need to spread as much seed as we possibly can, knowing that a lot of it isn't going to take root. The farmer's focus is on producing a lucrative crop. He's not overly concerned with whether or not the some of the soil is going to reject the seed—that’s a given.
Like Jesus, we're to sow the gospel as liberally as possible. St. Augustine exhorts us to amend ourselves before the harvest comes. "Say not, I have sinned, and what hath befallen me?" God hath not lost His power; but He is requiring repentance from you. I say this to evil on all sorts of ground. Rocks and thorns can be removed. For they are in the field; and it may so be, that they who to-day are tares, may to-morrow be wheat.” The angels of God will separate the weeds from the wheat.

Scriptural Context – Matthew’s explanation
In the gospel passage, following the presentation of the three parables, Jesus explains the parable of the wheat and darnel to his disciples. It is explained in terms of a final judgment. (Compare it with Matthew 25: 31-46.) The parable of the weeds, or darnel, and its explanation only appear in the gospel of Matthew – although the parable does occur in the non-canonical gospel of Thomas. The interpretation belongs to Matthew more than it belongs to Jesus. It is an unapologetic direction to his community that living a righteous life in the midst of wickedness will be rewarded.
Have you thought? – Leaven
The parable of the woman placing leaven in three measures of flour is an intriguing one. In some translations, the text reads, ‘The kingdom of heaven is like leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.’ Whilst you might initially hide yeast in some dough, it doesn’t take very long for the yeast to become apparent as it makes the dough rise. Such a large quantity of flour suggests the bread is being prepared for a festival – perhaps Passover when only unleavened bread was used? That would put a different spin on the woman’s action!
Living the Gospel – Agents of change
We often hear that to fully live out the kingdom message of Jesus is to be counter-cultural. These parables are a perfect example of that call. Jesus himself acted in contrast to his cultural context and often used examples in his teaching that flew in the face of cultural expectation. What does it mean to be counter-cultural today? Our world is driven by an emphasis on the individual; an emphasis on acquisition; an emphasis on consuming. The kingdom parables of today’s gospel call us to be the agents of change that ‘irritate’ in our own small way to make a difference in the world.
Questions for Adults
What new perspective/s have you gained about the three parables of today’s gospel? Why is this particular gospel writer keen to demonstrate Jesus as fulfilling prophecy? What does today’s passage reveal about the way the gospel writer went about his task? What problems may arise from quoting a short gospel extract out of its intended context?

WHY DO WE DO THAT? Catholic Life Explained
Question: Why do Catholics eat fish on Friday?
Answer: For centuries, meatless Fridays were the norm for Catholics throughout the world. Friday was chosen because that was the day on which Jesus died, and Christians wanted to find a way to honor that day with special prayers and acts of penance and self-denial. The practice of abstaining from meat on Fridays — under pain of sin — grew out of that desire, and it became an official part of Church teaching until the time of the Second Vatican Council. In the 1960s, there was a shift in the Church’s thinking, in large part because there was a recognition that differences in cultures and economic realities meant that eating or not eating meat had different meanings for different peoples. For example, in cultures that were largely dependent on seafood or a vegetarian diet, abstaining from meat was no sacrifice at all. While in other places, eating fish and other kinds of seafood was actually something rare and special and not a sacrifice. This was all part of a basic reflection on “why we do what we do” among the Church’s pastors. Today, Catholics throughout the world are still instructed to abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent. The bishops of some countries, such as in England and Wales, ask Catholics to abstain from meat every Friday, continuing the older tradition. The Bishops of the United States have taken a slightly different approach, encouraging Catholics to honor Friday as a special day by abstaining from meat every Friday or by taking on some other work of penance or charity for the sake of others. Regardless of what we choose to do, the real value in all of this is to see a reflection of Good Friday in each Friday, to remember the self-giving love of Jesus, and to honor that love through some sort of sacrifice or act of mercy.

SAINT MARY MAGDALENE Patron Saint of Converts and Repentant Sinners Feast Day : 22nd July
St. Mary Magdalene is one of the greatest saints of the Bible and a legendary example of God's mercy and grace. The precise dates of her birth and death are unknown, but we do know she was present with Christ during his public ministry, death and resurrection.
She is mentioned at least a dozen times in the Gospels. It is believed that Mary Magdalene is the same unnamed women, a sinner, who weeps and washes Jesus' feet with her hair in the Gospel of John.
During Jesus' ministry, it is believed that Mary Magdalene followed him, part of a semi-permanent entourage who served Jesus and his Disciples. Mary most likely watched the crucifixion from a distance along with the other women who followed Christ during His ministry.
Mary was present when Christ rose from the dead, visiting his tomb to anoint his body only to find the stone rolled away and Christ, very much alive, sitting at the place they laid Him. She was the first witness to His resurrection.
After the death of Christ, she remained among the early Christians before she was allegedly put into a boat by Jews, along with several others, and set adrift without sails or oars. The boat landed in southern France, where she spent the remaining years of her life in solitude.

A woman goes to the Doctor, worried about her husband's temper.
The Doctor asks: "What's the problem?"
The woman says: "Doctor, I don't know what to do. Every day my husband
seems to lose his temper for no reason. It scares me."
The Doctor says: "I have a cure for that. When it seems that your
husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it
in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don't swallow it until he either
leaves the room or calms down."
Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and
reborn.
The woman says: "Doctor that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband
started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and he
calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?"
The Doctor says: "The water itself does nothing. It's keeping your mouth
shut that does the trick."
