TRIBUTE TO A POUNDERMRS. ELMER WESLEY KIRKWOOD

(Jocelyn Lorraine Morgan)

On September 27.1982, SBOGS and many other organizationa lost a most dedicated member in the passing of Jocelyn Morgan Kirkwood, more familiarly known asJoyce, the wife of Elmer W. Kirkwood ("Kirk") of 3063 Foothill Road, Santa Barbara,93105. She was one of the original members of SBCGS and served as Secretary forseveral years during the time that meetings were held at the GoletaBranch of theSanta Barbara Public Library. She also donated many reference books and copies ofvarious periodicals, including the Vermont Branches and Twigs, to the Society Library. Joyce was born 15 November 1923 inTitusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, the site of the first oil well in 1841, and went to high school in nearbyOil City. "Kirk" and Joyce met in High School and sat side by side in Chemistryclass - which he says "worked". Hewas born 6 June 1923 in Rouseville, Pennsylvania to Wesley Merritt Kirkwood and Josephine McSparren Kirkwood. They were married16 March 1942 inOrchard Park, New York. Their children are Carol Anne, born 25December 1944, married Michael Logan; David Edward, born 28 November 1946, married(1) Jan Manning (who designed the ANCESTORS WEST cover), (2) Gloria Palden; SusanDiana, born 13 January 1948, married Alan Burke; Kathleen Joan, born 21 November,1947, married David Anderson; and Sandra Lynne, born 17 August 1954, married JosephBohnett. Joyce came to Santa Barbara in 1944 and for many years was employed asa secretary and bookkeeper. He was manager of the Santa Barbara office of theCarpenters' Union until his retirement. Presently he is taking a real estate pre-licensing course. For years we have all admired Joyce for her courage and determination in the face of surgery, radiology and chemotherapy, loss of mobilityand finally dependence upon legbraces and a wheel chair. Her chief interestswere her family, patriotic and genealogical organizations. Her four daughters arejunior members of Mission Canyon Chapter, NSDAR, as is her sister Barbara MorganHarvey of Oil City; her grandchildren have been enrolled in CAR; and her husband isa member of the SAR. July 4, 1978 she was awarded a statuette as Patriot of theYear forher support of the July Fourth Parade and other activities. She servedtwo terms (1974-1979) as Regent of Mission Canyon Chapter; served on the Board ofthe Patriotic Council, a group composed of representatives of patriotic organizations sponsoring and arranging parades on Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans'Day and memorial services; in the early 1970's was President of the Carpenters'Auxiliary 308; in DAC (Daughters of the American Colonists ofthe 17th Century)worked on public relations; served as treasurer of the DUV (Daughters of Union Veterans; during the organizational period of the Hereditary Society of Santa Barbaraspent many hours manning its library and making research facilities available in itsquarters in the Caneda Adobe at the Presidio site.

One of Joyce's outstanding attributes was her ability to work with peoplewho had experienced conflicts in larger groups and then proceeded to forn new organizations with somewhat similar objectives. Also she did not over-extend herself. When serving as the chief officer or worker of one group, she refrained frcm committing herself to a similar position in aother organizations. One person saidthat while she was serving as DAR regent she was approached by the nominating committee of the DAC to serve as its chief officer, but declined. This is a most commendable attribute in a person sowell qualified to assume leadership.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Other service and patriotic memberships included Hadas Madrinas, Marguerite Chapter 78of the Order of theEastern Star, National Society of the Dames of the Court of Honor (descendants ofcommissioned officers from Colonial days through the Civil War), New England Historic and Genealogical Society, and Dames of the Guild of St. Margaret of Scotlandto name a few. She is deeply missed and will be long remembered by her many friendsand colleagues.

Dear "Society",

WHO WERE THEPLUMAS RANGERS?

121

28th. October, 1982.

I have been trying, without any success, toget on answer to a problem and I am hoping you will be ableto furnish an answer and put ray inquisitive mind at rest.Even our own 'clan' in California seem to avoid the issue

' so perhaps an historically minded member of your societycan come up with the answer.

To be brief, what were the Plumas Rangers?

I read that when David Hambly brought his familyoverland in 1852, he arrived at Henpeck Flat. His son Williambecame a member of the Plumas Bangers operating against thieves, outlaws and Indians.

Were they similar to the Texas Rangers, and Icannot place Henpeck Plat on my map so suppose it had long sincebecome a ghost town? Who was 'Plumas' and were they full timepaid law agents?

Any help would be more than welcome.

The above inquiry has been referred to the editor (at her own request).Several hours of research at the Gledhill Library, Santa Barbara Historical Society, at the Santa Barbara Public Library assisted by its Reference Department, and scanning of "A Self-Governing Dominion, California, 1849-1860,"by WilliamHenry Ellison,U of Cal. Press, Berkeley and Los Angeles, California, and Cambridge U Press, London, England, 1950 (the recurrent theme of this book is theprinciple of self-government. The early American immigrants to California considered themselves a people apart, independent and beyond legal authority.Throughout the decade dealt with in this volume they repeatedly stated or implied that they owned the lands of the area, that the Indians had no rights, and that the federal government should aid California lavishly but leave thepeople of California to themselves.)Dr. Ellison ,a native of Falls Church, Va.,for some forty years taught and researched California history. For many yearshewas head of the History Department at Santa Barbara State College and UCSBinto which it developed. The Ellison Building at UCSB honors his name. Hisdaughter Margaret (Mrs. Roy C. Beckman) majored in Journalism and met her husband, now deceased, while both were employed by Arizona Highways and she laterserved in Washington, D. C. as a section under Edwin Murrow in Voice of Americadays. In retirement she lives in Easton, Maryland, and has received honors asa member of the Coast Guard patrol unit, and service of the "Margroy". In theforeword credit for critical reading of the manuscript is given her, long-timefriend of the editor. Plumas is the Spanish name for the Feather River. Theannual index of volumes through 1977 of the California Historical Society Quarterly, following the comprehensive Vols. 1-40, was examined . A possible solution to the problem may be found in "The Feather River in '49 and the Fifties."a 50-page booklet by George C. Mansfield, Oroville, Calif.; published by theauthor (Press of the Orovile Register), 1924, with many illustrations, quarto, distributed by the San Francisco News Company and the Van Nuys Company, and reviewed in 3 Calif. Hist. Soc. Quarterly pp 262-263. Perhaps a reader will examine that book and report to ANCESTORS WEST the results of the search. Thebook is not in the collections of the Santa Barbara Public Library. Alsowhere was Henpeck Flat? Several Feather River maps and references are beingmailed to Douglas Hamley. Also a request for identification of his "clan" members. Who were the Plumas Rangers?

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY VITAL RECORDSLilian M. Fish

With the completion of the 1897 marriage record listings asEditor of ANCESTORS WEST, a decision must be made as to continuing with transcriptions of marriage records only or whether anattempt should be made to carry birth and death record lists beyond the 1897 date reached by the previous editor.

For all recorded vital records between the late 1800's and1963, there is in the County Recorder's office at Santa Barbaraa Soundex System , and for records after 1963 all are on screen. In order to use these name must be furnished. A description ofthe system is set out separately.

Two hours were spent at the Recorder's office, examining 1896records. On the first visit a record book containing pasted-onrecord slips for births was produced, with a number of loose sheets. These were mostly of children not named at the time of registration. However, two were found to have been reported by males designatingthemselves as "fathers", but in the space for name of mother appeared the word "unknown." Having failed to note the date of onebirth, on the next visit to inspect 1896 death records, it wasfound that two index volumes for 1896 had not been produced on theprevious visit. One of those had no alphabetical tabs and wouldbe very difficult to use; the other had a number of notations ofcorrections, with date (but not content) of correction. Presumablythose supplied some of the names of those unnamed at the time ofthe original registration. Inquiry by name and use of the SoundexSystem Index should be employed.

Reporting of the death listings has not been entirely consistent.Headings used by member Victor M. South for 1894 were as follows:Name, Age, Place born, Residence, Cause of Death, Date. Those for1895,1896 and 1897 give Name, Age, Birthplace, Date. None give theplace of death. The cause of death is important and is receivingmore and more attention.

Much can be learned from the Mortality Schedules attached tothe Federal lensus, copies of which are in the Gledhill Library atthe Santa Barbara Historical Society. 34 names are included in the1860 schedule. Those 16 or over were:1. Thomas Robbins 22 Male b. Calif, d. May 16 RancheroStockraiser2. Charles Robbinsl8 " " » d. May 13 Tinsmith Consumption

This schedule also shows the number of days ill for each. There may be a story behind the "Hung" as cause of death of Fran

cisco and Jose Bardillo. The name "Jack Powers" in connection withJose Ramon Malo is of interest. The August-September 1982 Santa Barbara Magazine, carries an article on the Decade of the Desperado, bySanta Barbara historian and author, Walker A. Tompkins. One was JackPowers, who at 19 in 1846 enlisted in the First Regiment of New YorkVolunteers , Col. J. D. Stevenson, for occupation of California.Powers had won his Sergeamt's strips in Company F, the unit Col. Stevenson assigned to occupy the sleeply little seaside town of Santa Barbara. Young cabalieros challenged the Yanquis to a horse race on EastBeach. Don Jose de la Guerra , the town's wealthiest citizen, loanedfine horses from his abundant supply. Handsome, black-bearded JackPowers won race after race and de la Guerra offered him a job training horses and managing his stables as soon as the regiment was mustered out of service. On deactivation of the regiment in 1848most of the soldiers hurried off to the Sierra Nevada gold mining'camps, including Jack Powers. He found it easier to use dice andplay poker to separate successful miners from their gold dust andnuggets. Heading for San Francisco on a river boat, Powers amassed

more than $175,000 in poker and roulette winnings, which he plannedto take back to New York to finance a business venture. But hisluck changed and before the boat reached the embarcadero his fortunehad dwindled, ending his dream of becoming a New York entrepreneur. He then turned to highway robbery, alligning himself with the"Hounds", in San Francisco. Escaping a vigilante roundup he retreated to Santa Barbara and accepted the de la Guerra family's offer ofhonest employment as groom and trainer of their horses. Thus he hada perfect cover of respectability and an excuse for being away fromtown without arousing suspicion.- also an unlimited number of fasthorses for getaways following robberies. He gathered a band of outlaws around him. Their exploits are detailed in the Tompkins article.

The 1870 Mortality Schedule for Township No. 2 (Santa Barbara)listed only 23 deaths, of which 5 were those of adult personsln addition to the items shown in the 1860 schedule, this gives the numberof the family as given in the census. In checking the marriage records copied for this issue, curiositywas aroused by the listing of two dates for the T. W. Halley,BelleWilson marriage - 2 Mar. Santa Barbara and 11 Nov. Summerland 1896.Although the March 2 listing appears in the index, the only recordis that for the marriage in Summerland Nov. 11, 1896. A copy Isreproduced as it does indicate the extent of information sometimesdisclosed in the record.

The November 1982 DARMagazine contains about 16 1/2 pages , with a numberof illustrations of historical personages and sites, including several relatingto "Mark Twain" (Samuel Clemens), his older brother Orion Clemens who came to Muscatine as co-owner, co-editor of the Muscatine Journal, and his mother, Jane Lamp-ton Clemens. Also the birthplace of the bandleader, Glenn Miller.Clarinda, Iowa.

The National Law Journal, Noverriber 15,1982, carries an article on litigation involving a March 1982 amenctoent by the state General Assembly of the staterules of criminal procedure to give judges the option of importing jurors from another county rather than moving the trial itself. Iowa apparently is only the secondstate to pass such a law. Pennsylvania has a "change of venire" law since 1980.The intent is to reduce trial costs while permitting defendants in publicized casesto be judged by jurors who have not been exposed to pretrial publicity.

The Chicago & Rock Island Railroad had been completed tothe east bank of the Mississippi River, opposite Davenport in 1854 and on the 1stcay of January 1856, this railroad was completed to Iowa City. On May 15, 1856congress passed an act granting to the State certain sections, six miles on eitherside of proposed lines, to aid in the construction of railroads.

SUMMIT GROVE

In these pioneer days of the early 1850's when the settlers were arrivingand bound for points further west, Guthrie County was formed on July 8, 1851.i J~e k*8*1 point where tne P1"811*6 and the tinixsrlands met formed a naturallamtoark for the covered wagon emigrants. It was soon settled by Quakers fromIndiana and Ohio as the tall tinbers could be seen for miles in every direction. The conmunity was known as Suamit Grove and later all the little towns in the country around became known as Quaker Divide.

In 1856 these Quakers needed ameeting house. Five acres was conated by Cyrus and David Bowles and on one bright moonlight night, when the lumber was on theground, the new structure was dedicated where the foundation had been laid outthat afternoon. Eloquence was at fever heat, orators told of how and why, andwith a flourish of truqjet and prayer, the meetinghouse was set apart for churchpurposes. The building, about 30 x 40 feet, a single room, was used for religiousservice and school. It soon became the social center of the Sumnit Grove Settlement. Twice aweek for over twenty years these faithful worshippers gatheredthere. No "clear ringing bell" to call worshippers together was needed for theyall knewwhen meeting time came andturned out on time.

IThis beautiful spot amid the tall oaks, fringed about with wild forest growth, named Sunrait Grove, is now the present Stuart North Oak Grove Cemetery and todaymaybe read on the headstones the names of those old Quaker pioneers who livedabove the surrounding countryside on Quaker Ridge before the coming of the "IronHorse" and the town of Stuart.

STUART CENTENNIAL

ntvm^f town of Stuart, Iowa, celebrated its first hundred years on August 7-8ir!*u!rth a 2cnnrltnient to I0011 back at tbe eventful history of Stuart on its 100thbirthday. Since my maternal and paternal ancestors were pioneers of this area Ishare seme of the highlights and amusing sides of "where I grew up."

The town was named in honor of its founder, Captain Charles Stuart, who firstcame across the fertile acres in 1852 as the Illinois and Iowa agent of tbe Fairbanks Scale Company. In 1854 he made extensive investments in Iowa and with theextension of the Rock Island Railroad through Iowa in 1868 he bought additionalland "near the site, at the juncture of Adair and Guthrie Counties: and on thesevarious pieces of land, Mr. Stuart laid out the original town of Stuart in December1868 and January 1869. His name appears on the deed of dedication filed in theCourt House in Guthrie Center on August 5, 1870.

Stuart has the distinction of being in two counties. North of the railroad isGuthrie County and south of the railroad tracks is Adair County created by act ofthe legislature in 1851. The Mormon Trail passed through Adair County.

IOWA

Prior to the coming of the Rock Island Railroad another "Train" crosseddiagonally from Adair County on the south to Guthrie County, striking SummitGrove, where Stuart is now located. Slavery was recognized as a product ofMissouri, south of Iowa, and Iowa, being a free state, naturally proved a highway for the Underground Railroad. Slaves made a run for the North Star and manytimes colored men and women crossed the prairie frcmMiddle River to SunmLt Grove. After John Brown came through Iowa, stations were known and accounted for and myfather has pointed out a house in west Stuart many times known as such a station.

POLK FAMILY

It was to this land that Edmund Polke of McDonough County, Illinois came in1854 and purchased 240 acres in Section 15, Township 76, Adair County, on November24, 1854 for $1.25 per acre, entry #10,600 at the land office at Fort Des Moines.About ten miles south of Summit Grove, at the time a few families were crossingMiddle River in ox drawn covered wagons andbuilding sinple log cabin homes.Friendly Indians were still riding out of the woods.

Edmund returned to Illinois and died in 1861. His Polk ancestry descendedfrom Captain Robert BrucePolk (Pollok) and Magdalen Tasker who came to Americafrcm Ireland in 1672. Their second son, William Polk, Sr., is also ancestor ofJames K. Polk, 11th President of the United States (1845-1849). William's son,Charles Polk, the Indian trader, was the father of Captain Charles Polk who married Delilah Tyler, and followed the tide of emigration to Kentucky. On one ofthe Wabash Indian forays into that part of Kentucky Delilah and four of theirchildren were taken prisoner. Shewas far advanced in pregnancy and her son,Charles Polk III, was born in Indian captivity in Detroit on October 20, 1782.Capt. Charles Polk rescued his family about a year aftertheir capture and CharlesPolk III, the little white papoose, grewup in Nelson County, Kentucky. He married Margaret McQuaid and theymigrated to Indiana. Edmund Polkwas one of their13 children. He married Jane Elliott and went from Indiana to Illinois.

In 1865Edmund Polk's daughter Clara married Andrew Haynes and they iianediate-ly set our for Iowa to live on this land in Adair County. While coming throughDes Moines they refused an opportunity to tradetbe team and wagon for fortyacres of land adjoining the city on the west. Their journey to Adair County wascompletedwith a team of one horse and one cow.

HAYNES FAMILY

When Andrew and Clara Haynes arrived at their farm on Middle River, just afew miles away at Port Union therewas a grist mill where farmers took their grainto be ground. Wheat for flour, corn for cornmeal, and other grains into pancakeflour. Mail had been received at a small farmhouse post office with the Indianname of Wah-ta-Wah beforePort Union, and the name changed againwith a relocationso it could be served by a daily mail route between Stuart and the county seat ofGreenfield. Now it was Arbor Hill and one of only four post offices in AdairCounty. The big event every September was the Old Settlers Reunion with races ofall kinds, ball games, speeches, horseshoes, contests in nail driving, egg carrying and horse pulling. At certain seasons there were fox hunts and often a circle wolf hunt. Therewas fishing in the river and swimming in the hole at themilldam site. Now, except for memories, Arbor Hill - Port Union is no longer athriving ccrammity.

It was a great place for my Granddad Farris Haynes to spend his boyhood. Thisson of Andrewand ClaraPolk Haynes was born on this farmOctober 23, 1866. Hemarried Mary Alice Roads, a neighbor girl of Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry October17, 1888. This ancestry is noted for well-tended farmland, magnificent produceand I can vouch for the "Vunderful Goot" cookies my Grandna made. They were theparents of five sons: Hilton, Coleman, Lester, Ray, Edwin and one daughter.Flor-ence, my mother.

Farris Haynes, farmer, servedon the City Council of Stuart 1915-1919 when theadministration was called, sometimes in derision and sometimes with affection,"BOY Mayor and BOY Council". But they made many municipal improvements, thefirst deep well was completed; the municipal light plant was enlarged so the citizens could have electricity seven days a week; water and sanitary systems were installed; disposal plant built; business district paved; City Hall built, and perpetual care established for the cemeteries.

DEVELOPMENT OF STUART

the iowa daily STATE REGISTER of Decentoer 26, 1869 reported: "The ChicagoRock Island & Pacific Railroad is erecting its various shops and engine housesat Stuart, andbusiness houses are springing up daily."

The stage coach had been discontinued through a little village north of Stuart, Morrisburg, which hadbeen laid out in 1855 by J. J. Morris and James Moore. At one time it was one of the most promising little towns on the road with a telegraph office, newspaper, dry goods store, blacksmith shop, saloon, hotel, schoolhouse and a church. A cemetery was also laid out. Then it began to dwindle away, the remains destroyed by a romado in 1871 and never rebuilt.

The Ben Noland family had come to Iowa from Ohio, stopping first in BooneCounty. The 1875 Map of Stuart area, Guthrie County, shows them with an 80-acrefarm. There are my father's maternal Great Grandparents, buried at Morrisburg Cemetery in 1894 and 1896.

Among other things going on in Stuart, inthe year 1871, was the planting ofnearly five thousand shade trees. Quoting frcm the Locomotive Sparks newspaper:"We are now robed in living green - even tbe trees of the forest find "it is goodto be here."

Meetings were being held with a viewto organization of a CongregationalChurch Society andthe erection of a church edifice. On March 16,1871, the newspaper wrote: "Can't we have in Stuart one of those new fangled sociables whichare allthe rage in other places? If not, why not? For the benefit of our youngfolks we will give a description of the manner of getting up these enjoyablelittle affairs: Each lady procures and makes for herself an apron of some cheapmaterial, and the more outlandish the pattern the better the fun, from the samematerial the apron is composed, shemanufactures a necktie, of any pattern shechooses; this is placed in an envelope and sealed up without any address. Theseenvelopes are all collected together andwhen the time arrives, the gentlemenwalk up to the Capn's office and each pay 25 or 50 cents, whatever sum may be a-greed upon, for one of the envelopes, which he opens. It now becomes his dutyto findthe ladywearing the apron which matches his necktie and to her he isduty bound to act as an escort for the evening, be she matron or be she maid, andwhen a mismatch takes place, then the laugh comes in. Just now when Stuart is inso much needof a church, thiswould be an excellent way to raise some money."I don't know how much this helped, but the lovely brick church with stained glasswindows and a pipe organ is still there. My paternal Grandparents, Frank BarringerandElizabeth Sanford were married at the Congregational parsonage on Sunday evening,January 20, 1889. My daughter was baptized in the church, 1950.

June 1, 1871 a new Livery Stable, 22 x 40 feet, capable of accommodating 15span of horses was commenced. A trip was made to Illinois for horses and buggies. This would make two first-class Livery Stables in Stuart, second to "none in thestate for style."

This same month it was stated "we like cows; they are a very useful animal, and so docile. The bells theywear around their necks are so large and so musical."We don't find fault with cows for making a practice of rooming for the night on thegrass plot underneath our window, nor for scratching their fleecy sides againstthe corners of our house, but when we arisewith the lark in the morning to themusic of cow bells we have been calmly listening to all night, find our shade treebefore our door, inwhich we took so much pride, broken off, trampled down andchewed up, it makes one feel like forever swearing off from the use of milk inany form and become a vegetarian. But it is just our luck — in conclusion wewill only say, should this tree-breaking, side scratching, bell-ringing continuemuch longer in our neighborhood — we will be tempted to pray that an ear of cornfinds itselfcross-wise into eachthroat and cause each cow to cough-er-dam headoff. "Coffer-dam" is not swearing!

Stuart's First July 4th Celebration, 1872 was a glorious affair with the citi-aens turned out en masse. A thousand yards of gay bunting unfurledto the breezefrom the tops of various buildings and a large crowd gathered around the depotwhere a brass cannon was stationed. As six o'clock drew near the evening traincould be observed rounding the curve a short distance frcm the town, the cannonbegan firing a salute, the Stuart BrassBand stuck up a lively air, and as thecars reached the depot, at the rear end of the train was attached a magnificentcoach containing Captain Charles Stuart and wife and about 75 invited guests fromIllinois. It was estimated over three thousand people were present.

STUART, IOWA

November 24, 1893 - A telegram was received Tuesday from Tincup, Colorado announcing the death of Wm. Barringer. One of the pioneers of the area, the Bar-ringers had lived on a farm in Stuart's Adair County 1870-1880. They had marriedin 1852 in New York and moved West, first to Illinois, then to wtuart. Aboutthis time there was great excitement over gold in Colorado and Wm. Barringerjoined the legendary boom. Tin Cup enjoyed the dubious distinction of being oneof Colorado's three roughest towns. He was successful in his strike, had soldit, when he was fatally shot with a bullet in the back and found frozen todeath in the yardof his little cabin. December 1, 1893 - the remains of WilliamBarringer arrived Saturday night frcm Tin Cup, Colorado. He was buried inStuart's North Oak Grove Cemetery. His sons were harness makers and his daughtersmarried owners of harness shops in Stuart.July l, 1898 - The Hartsock Bros, of Bondurant passedthrough Stuartwith theirhorseless carriage. They were en route to Omaha to place it on exhibition. Themotive power is a gasoline engine. They bought five gallons of fuel here andsaid it would last themthe balance of the day (Omaha is 100 miles from Stuart). The outfit makes about as much noise as a threshing machine.

THE TOWN CLOCK - Is it Stuart's Oldest Landmark? The eight-day clock, completed on November 24, 1894 was manufactured in Connecticut by the SethThomasClock Company. It was donated to the town of Stuart on January 11, 1971 by theMasonic Lodge. Ref.: Stuart newspapers as dated

Stuart Herald, Centennial Edition. In 1896 the railroad shops were gone from Stuart andthe town's economy was

largely dependent upon the surrounding agricultural territory. On Stuart's 100th birthday, E. G. Barringer - my father - was "Main Street's

Oldest Active Business Man," a charter member of the Stuart Service Club, andhad served on the City Council, the Board of Eduction, President of the StuartBuilding and Loan Ass'n., Treasurer of the Four County Angus Ass'n. formore than18 years - this native son of Stuart, apprentice harness maker at the ageof 14,will be 90 years old on NewYear's Day, 1983. There have been five generationsof Barringers in Stuart. I ownthe farm that has been in our family since 1854and it received Century Farm Recognition in 1975.

For the Centennial Celebration the citizens placed in a sealed vault, buriedin the town park, many items and messages to the people of Stuart in the year2070 to serve as a meaningful bridge between 1970 and those who follow across a-nother century.

I liked growing up in Middle America. Life in a small town was fun. Thefirst years I lived away from Stuart, and Iowa, I was terribly lonesome for snowdrifts.

ANSWERING QUERIES PAYSHaving reported successful contacts made by others, it seems appropriate

to mention some experiences of your editor.About a year ago in response to a query placed by Clyde M. Senger, 1103

Yew St., Bellingham, WA 98225 regarding the PEARL family of Bradford andBoxford, Essex County, Massachusetts, additional data on that family and asample of Mt. St. Helens ashes was received.

Answering a query in THE SECOND BOAT regarding Methuen, Essex County,Massachusetts, andPelham, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, families, amost surprising relationship was discovered. Melinda Hatfield, of 2629 Belmont, Eugene, Oregon 97404, proved to be the granddaughter of Charles WarrenMann, Jr. of Methuen, Mass, a double cousin ( Charles Warren Mann, Sr. andSamuel Eleazer Mann were brothers and their wives, Mary Elizabeth Marsh, andElla Agnes Hobbs were first cousins (both granddaughters of Moody Hobbs andElizabeth Parker (Spofford) Hobbs of Pelham, N.H.) Melinde is now editor ofthe Bulletin, the quarterly publication of the Oregon Genealogical Society. She is also the compiler of the hayes family of Virginia, She and the editorare now collaborating on a family history of their MANN Family.

Queries. Pedigreeand Anchestor Charts and forms. Queries should relate to Truman surnames.

Fillers should not be overlooked:The most important fact about any family tree is the quality of the current crop

of fruit. If you could see your ancestors all standing in a row. There might be someamong themwhom you wouldn't care to know. But there's quite another matter, which requires a different view- If you could see your ancestors, would they be proud of you?

Food for thought: If the ancestry of a single person running back to the 12thentury could be written out, using a square inch to each name, it would occupy about 1/4of a square mile. - YOUR FAMILY TREE.

Success is relative - the greater the success the more the relatives.Subscriptions will be on a calendar year basis so that subscribers in the latter

part of the year will receive back issues for that year unless subscriber specificallystates that subscription is to start the following years. It is stated that librarieswill receive complimentary copies upon request.

SANTA BARBARA COUNTYOne of California's 27 originalcounties. While the county wasactually created in 1850, the history of the area dates back to1542. In that year Juan Cabrillodiscovered the Santa Barbara Channel and later, according to legendcrossed to San Miguel Island, wherehe died and was buried. A secondSpanish explorer, Sebastian Vizcaino, entered the channel on theFeast Day of Saint Barbara in 1602and named the area accordingly. Fr.Junipero Serra founded the SantaBarbara mission in 1786. SantaBarbara Royal Presidio, established April 21, 1782, was the last offour royal presidios in Alta California - San Diego, Monterey, SanFrancisco and Santa Barbara. SantaBarbara had all three Spanish forms-Presidio representing the military;Pueblo, civil and Mission, religious.

In 1873 Ventura County was established frcm the southern portion1of the original Santa Barbara area.
