Dear Readers,

Every year, the hotel business is a par t of the service sector which plays an important role in generating a large amount of income for Thailand. However, at present, while global warming results in climate change and there is an increase in severe disasters, international tourists have become more concerned about the signifi cance of the global warming effects. Therefore, entrepreneurs of hotels and other forms of accommodation, besides focusing on the business benefi ts, have paid more attention on the campaign for decreasing the effects of global warming and protecting the environment. This in turn tends to be the fi rst alternatives for tourists who would like to visit Thailand.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is aware of the effects of global warming, and has been supporting the supporting the operation of green hotels around the country which can provide visitors with a memorable impression and satisfy their needs. In this regard, TAT, in cooperation with the Green Leaf foundation and Red Mango Company Limited, has published the guidebook, Green Hotels & Resorts Thailand, with the hope that this would be benefi cial for all stakeholders in the tourism industry, visitors, and the interested public.

On this occasion, I would like to thank all hotels and resorts for their cooperation and participation in this campaign, and we wish the promotion of green hotels would contribute to environmental conservation and the growth of sustainable tourism in Thailand as well.

Message from the President

Today, global warming has become a pressing issue affecting all people and economies. Immediate action must be taken to protect our natural resources and safeguard our future.

The tourism industry acknowledged that it has an important part to play in reducing emissions and acting in a responsible and sustainable manner. As a result, several Thai and international organizations joined hands to establish an important environmental initiative called The Green Leaf Foundation. Partners who worked to create the foundation include The Tourism Authority of Thailand, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Metropolitan Waterworks Authority, United Nations Environment Program, Thai Hotels Association, and the Association for Development of Environmental Quality. From the outset, the intention was to set clear standards for hotel and tourism operators in order to help them implement a good code of practice, save energy and conserve the environment.

The main activities of the Green Leaf Foundation focus on mitigating and adapting to climate change by saving energy in accordance with government policy. The foundation is united in its goal to fi nd the best environmentally friendly solutions for the hotel and tourism industry. Part of the initiative is also the Health Promotion Hotel Programme which not only implemented a smoke free environment for hotels but also actively promotes health tourism across the entire industry.

Increased Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is being promoted among all tourism related businesses: state tourism promotion agencies, tourism operators and service providers, media representatives, and both Thai and foreign tourists. In Thailand, Green Tourism is receiving broad support from both the public and private sectors.

TAT has identifi ed four key Green Initiatives.

- Promoting Thai “Green” tourism by raising awareness of green tourism operators and service providers through the creation of a database of environmentally responsible tourism related businesses.

- Recognizing, developing and rewarding green tourism role models.

- Organizing green tourism conferences, meetings and educational seminars.

- Implementing a “Seven Greens” program - Green Heart (tourist social responsibility), Green Logistics (transport), Green Destinations, Green Communities (conservation of environment and local culture), Green Activities, Green Service, and Green Plus (CSR that gives back to the community).

In the 21st Century with constant reports concerning global warming and climate change, more people are looking to reduce their carbon footprint by taking environmentally responsible holidays. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is “going green”, taking its environment responsibilities seriously and developing a program to ensure long-term sustainability of the tourism industry. Green Tourism requires a balance between tourism promotion and environmental protection.

With a motto of “Save money. Save the environment”, the Green Leaf Foundation aims to improve the effi ciency of hotels and related businesses with the objective of saving resources such as energy and water along with creating more environmentally friendly waste management. Hotels not only become more environmentally friendly, but also save money due to more effi cient operations in areas from guest rooms to kitchen and laundry facilities. The cost-savings can then be passed along to customers.

A Green Hotels Directory, for distribution to travel agencies worldwide, lists certifi ed hotels and, therefore, provides widespread recognition for environmental activities. The Green Leaf Foundation, through the certifi cation program, wishes to raise awareness of Thailand’s environmentally friendly travel and tourism industry, giving the Kingdom a competitive advantage in the world market. Green Leaf Certifi cation is reassessed every two years.

Green CommunitiesTourism is the major source of income in some communities. These communities are usually of interest because of a unique culture, unique traditions or a unique way of life. Balance between the generated income and maintaining local traditions and customs is a necessity.

Green Plus+Corporate Social Responsibility involves both doing no harm and intentionally doing good. Weighing the potential for environmental damage before undertaking any project or initiative is a must. Actively seeking ways to improve the community demonstrates respect for the community and creates respect and support for the industry.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand believes these Seven Greens will offer the increasingly environmentally aware tourist more opportunities for low impact travel while creating a more sustainable tourism industry for the Kingdom. Act now! Our planet needs your support.

Green ActivitiesTouching nature changes nature. TAT wishes to promote activities that are well suited to the local ecosystem. You can enjoy nature without destroying it. Impact on native fl ora and fauna must be taken into consideration before tourist activities are planned. These activities could and should include an environmental awareness component.

Green ServiceThere are numerous ways service providers can increase environmental friendliness. Use natural based materials. Make sure only properly treated waste is returned to the environment. Use water and energy effi ciently. Recycle. Decrease air and noise pollution.

Thai Tourism is going GREEN.The Tourism Authority of Thailand is asking you to “Enjoy Travel and Care for the Environment’. They are asking this of all parties concerned in tourism – you the tourists, hotels, attractions, transportation and tour agents. Reducing our carbon footprint, reducing pollution and maintaining and improving our environment are goals most of us share. TAT has initiated a new program, SEVEN GREENS, that establishes a framework and guidelines to help the tourism industry find a balance between environmental management of the industry and global marketing. TAT wishes to restore environmental quality, raise environmental awareness and promote Corporate Social Responsibility.

There are seven areas that have been targeted for TAT’s green initiatives. They point out the need for everyone to take care of the planet.

Green HeartDon’t just speak; act! Tourists are asked to be environmentally and socially aware and to take an active role in the global efforts to preserve and protect the environment at all tourist attractions.

Green LogisticsTransportation is a huge source of global warming. Lower impact transport is being promoted. Riding a bicycle or walking is good for your health as well as being good for the environment. A bus has a lower carbon impact than a single occupant car.

Green Destinations / AttractionsTourist sites must be responsibly managed with a view to respecting the natural environment.

Low Impact Tourismobjectives of low impact tourism are:

- To protect the environment. - To respect local cultures. - To benefi t local communities. - To conserve natural resources.

One of the fi rst places to practice low impact tourism was the Galapagos Islands. This amazingly ecologically diverse group of islands, credited with giving Darwin his insight into evolution, has been a shining example of sustainability.

In Thailand examples of low impact tourism include the hiking trails of Krabi National Park, trekking and rafting in Kanchanaburi, and the wetlands tour of Sam Roi Yat National Park.

Tourists are increasingly aware of their impact on the environment. No longer can one simply book an air ticket, go trekking or white water rafting nor assume sheets will be changed daily in a hotel room. Fuel surcharges immediately draw attention to one’s carbon footprint. Many trekking and rafting areas limit tourist numbers. Hotels make one choose to reuse towels and sheets or to change them. All of these are examples of lowering the environmental impact of tourism.

Low impact tourism asks one to be culturally, socially and environmentally responsible. Issues of concern are: waste management, preser vation, pollution control, recycling, and earth and air preservation. The four basic

7. Network with Other Green-Minded Companies:

We can learn about the green practices that have worked well for other businesses. Here are Newsweek’s Top 500 Green companies: www.greenrankings.newsweek.com

10. Practice Freecycling:

Freecycling is the passing of an unwanted item, for free, to another person who needs the item. Freecycling makes for more space in landfi lls and reduces the need to manufacture new goods.

9. Build a Green Interior:

This means the creation of an interior of beauty and functionality while keeping our health and the environment in mind. Use of eco-friendly materials makes the interior better for living.

5. Educate Ourselves on Green Principles:

We can access educational resources that promote sustainable, impactful pro-green behaviours in businesses, communities and families. Here is one source: www.greeneducationfoundation.com

8. Digitize Documents:

Instead of ineffi ciently and wastefully attempting to organize paper documents into physical fi les, scan the important fi les to digital documents.

6. Turn It Off, Repair It:

Turn off lights when they are not in use to save electricity. Repair leaky faucets and toilets to save water.

Recycle Paper

Top Ten Practices of Green Hotels

1. Recycle Used Consumer Items:

Recyclable materials typically include glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles, and other used items which can be taken to a recycling center or be picked up curbside for reprocessing.

2. Eliminate Junk Mail:

Have your name removed from mailing lists used for unsolicited offers, mail order sompanies, and sweepstakes mailers. This website is helpful: www.stopjunk.com/environment

3. Minimize Waste of Paper:

Use both sides of a sheet of paper when printing, copying, writing and drawing. Use email to share documents and ideas. Print only those emails for which a hard copy is needed.

4. Recycle Electronics:

Electronic products contain valuable materials, plus dangerous contents that could get into water supplies. Some manufacturers and retailers will recycle your used electronics.

Recycle: We can recycle a wide variety of materials, including paper, food scraps, yard trimmings, electronic products, and many others. These materials can be reprocessed into new products, preventing waste of potentially useful materials.

Rebuy: We should try to purchase products manufactured with recycled content. The recycling of a product and its subsequent purchase as a new product is called the “recycling loop.” The closing of the recycling loop is a good eco-friendly practice.

Practicing the 4 R’s is a sound strategy in helping to conserve the environment and the limited natural resources of our planet. It promotes the protection of air quality and clean water and makes the earth a better place to live.

The 4 R’s:Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rebuy

Reduce: We can reduce waste by making ecologically sound decisions when purchasing products, including consideration of the packaging of the product: the less packaging material used, the better.

The four primary strategies in helping the environment by effectively managing materials and waste are “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rebuy.”

Reuse: We should reuse containers and products, and rather than buying disposable items we should try to purchase and use items that can be reused, and by doing so eliminate unnecessary trash.

meals. The gardens can also attract convention and banquet business that may require a specialized menu, and in many cases these guests will happily pay a premium for organic meals.

Best of all from the view of the protection of the environment, because chemicals are not used, the land is preserved from damage, and the use of local food items saves the necessity of and expense of fuel-consuming transportation. It’s easy to see why organic gardens in hotels and resorts is a growing trend.

This food is so well received primarily because the growers do not have to consider packing, shipping and shelf-life issues but can instead give priority to freshness, nutritional value and taste. Additionally, the diners can feel secure that their food was not subjected to pesticides and fertilizers in the growing process.

Hotels which have invested in their own gardens are fi nding that, in addition to their being environmetally fi riendly, the gardens help draw guests who prefer or demand organic

do buy a fan, mini-fridge, or other appliance while traveling through Thailand, make sure you buy the most effi cient one.

Then, do your homework, while researching where you are going to stay fi nd out what kind of eco-measures your prospective hotel is using. If they are eco-friendly reward them with your patronage and make sure you tell management you were delighted that they were practicing green management.

“Buying Green” means purchasing products or services which reduce environmental impact. Ironically, some tourists who are environmentally conscious in their homeland can be less environmentally conscious when they travel. But if you treat your visiting destination the same as you treat your home, we are all likely to enjoy life’s treasures for a longer period of time. So use the same discretion you employ in purchasing products at home when buying goods abroad. There is probably an overemphasis put on litter when discussing environmental problems. Litter isn’t hazardous; it just looks ugly and takes a long time to degrade. So to avoid litter only take as many plastic bags as you need, or better yet carry a canvas bag with you which you can put your purchased items in. And don’t litter, set an example. If children see you littering, they will think it gives them a green light to do so.

In Thailand, electrical appliances have a sticker grading them from 1-5 with 5 being the most effi cient. So if you

Solar PowerSolar power is the generation of electricity from sunlight, and thus it has nearly limitless potential. On a very local basis, solar panels can provide the electricity required by a single home. Though only 0.02% of the world’s energy supply comes from solar power, huge “solar farms” are the future, with Spain leading the way operating seven solar plants.

GreenscapingGreenscaping is the implementation of landscaping practices designed to improve the appearance and health of lawns and gardens while protecting and preserving natural resources. For businesses such as hotels and resorts with extensive land areas, landscaping is an aspect of environmental protection that must be addressed, considering the amount of water consumed and waste vegetation generated. Greenscaping uses the fl ows of resources within the landscape and it offers ways to manage them.

CompostingComposting is the decomposition

of the remains of plants and other once-living materials, resulting in a dark, crumbly substance which can be effectively added to garden soil. Composting is a useful way to recycle a household’s kitchen and yard wastes. Furthermore, it can help reduce the volume of garbage sent to landfi lls for disposal. A compost pile can be built in a convenient spot on

the ground, or constructed from wood or commercially purchased.

Carbon CreditsA carbon credit is a permit that allows the holder to emit one ton of carbon dioxide, as authorized by the Kyoto Protocol. Countries or groups that have reduced their green house gases below their emission quota may be awarded with carbon credit. The goal of this system is to stop the increase of carbon dioxide emissions. For example, a group that plants enough trees to reduce emissions by one ton is awarded one credit. That group could then sell the credit to a manufacturer which expects to exceed its emissions quota.

Green Alternative Power Sources and Strategies

Water PowerWater power is derived from the force of moving water which is harnessed for useful purposes. Hydroelectric power generated by dams now supplies about 19% of world electricity usage. Wave power and tidal power, given the vastness of our oceans, is potentially a huge energy source.

Wind PowerWind power is the conversion of wind energy into various useful forms of energy. Wind power accounts for about 1.5% of worldwide electricity usage and is growing rapidly. Large-scale wind farms are connected to electric power grids. Germany is the world leader in wind power utilization.

Independent Traveler.com lists the following questions to ask before booking your hotel to see if it is eco-friendly, and then gives you some tips on how to be environmentally conscious once you arrive:

Booking Accommodation

Is the hotel locally owned and operated? If not, is it at least staffed by local employees?

What kind of recycling programs does the hotel have (aluminum, plastic, paper, gray water, composting)?

Do guests have the option to reuse towels and sheets instead of having them changed every day?

What programs does the hotel have to reduce consumption? Examples include energy-efficient lighting, low-flow toilets and showers, and alternative energy sources like solar or wind power.

How does the hotel contribute to the local community?

Once There

Keep your showers short, and shut off the water while you’re brushing your teeth. When you leave the room, turn off the air conditioning, heat, television, lights or any other electric devices.

Reuse your sheets and towels instead of having them changed every day. Many

hotels will not replace your towels if you leave them hanging up neatly; if you’re not sure, write a note for the housekeeping staff or notify the front desk.

Bring your own toiletries and drinking cup rather than using the prepackaged ones provided. If you do use the hotel’s toiletries, take them with you and use them at home or during the rest of your trip.

Know your hotel’s recycling program and sort your trash accordingly. If your hotel doesn’t recycle, consider taking your empty bottles or other items home with you to recycle them there.

Give your hotel feedback. Express your appreciation for any eco-friendly programs it currently offers — or if it doesn’t, encourage the management to go green in the future.

Responsible Sightseeing

• “Take nothing but photographs, and leave nothing but footprints” is oft uttered and a good adage to try and adhere to.

• Travel with a tour operator that’s environmentally responsible. Before you book, be sure to ask about group size (smaller groups tend to make less of an environmental impact), whether the tours are led by locals, how the tour operator gives back to the community, and what kind of lodging is included.

• When hiking, always stay on marked trails and maintain a safe distance from any animals you encounter. Deposit your trash in marked receptacles or take it with you when you leave. Light campfi res only in established fi re rings and be sure they’re completely extinguished before you leave.

• When snorkeling, do not touch the coral or stir up sediment, as these actions can damage the reef ’s fragile ecosystem.

• Try to buy local products whenever possible instead of those that have been fl own or shipped in from overseas. You’ll support the local economy and get a taste of native cuisine. Do not, however, buy souvenirs or other products made from endangered animals or plants — in most cases you can’t get them through Customs anyway.

• Treat the locals with respect. Learn a few words in the native language, be open to cultural differences, and read up on the area before your trip so you’re sensitive to issues of dress and behavior.

• Consider taking a volunteer vacation to give back directly to the place you’re visiting.

Listed below are suggestions from Independent Traveler.com on how you can reduce your carbon footprint while traveling to your vacation spot and then how you can be a responsible sightseer once you arrive at your destination.

Getting There

• For shorter trips, take the train instead of fl ying - especially in Europe or other regions where train service is fast and frequent.

• When renting a car, choose the smallest vehicle that can comfortably accommodate you. Decline any “free” upgrades (which will cost you more in gas).

• Rent a hybrid car.

• Taking a long road trip? If your personal vehicle is large and not very fuel-effi cient, consider renting an economy car instead. You’ll save gas and avoid putting miles on your own vehicle.

• Whenever possible, use public transportation instead of a taxis or rental cars. Better yet, walk or bike.
