Thales has been operating in Canada for over 50 years and is the leading critical systems provider for urban transport, defence, security and aerospace.

Sales across Thales operations in Canada exceed CAD 500 million, and the company is strongly committed to development and innovation in a range of high-tech fields for both domestic and international markets.

Innovation and research

Thales is a major player in technological development and innovation in Canada. Through its close ties with research institutions, government organisations and academic partners, including Laval University, the University of Toronto and Concordia University, the company is helping to advance research in defence, cybersecurity, data processing and biometrics.

One of Thales’s five global research and technology centres is located in Quebec. Its mission is to develop broad-based expertise and project its image and influence as widely as possible in order to secure funding for the development of innovative technologies, and promote scientific knowledge in Thales’s various areas of business: defence, public safety and security, cybersecurity, aerospace and urban transport. The Canada R&T centre specialises in decision-support systems, cybersecurity, public security, big data technologies, human factors, cognitive engineering and Android mobility apps.

Thales also hosts the Joint Research Unit in Urban Sciences (UMRsu) at its Quebec facility as part of an ongoing commitment to smart and safe cities. The UMRsu focuses on solutions that improve efficiency and smooth, seamless operations in the city, whether in transport, governance, security, urban planning or urban logistics. This 280-sq.m. laboratory is a partnership between the Quebec City authorities, Laval University, the National Institute of Scientific Research, the Quebec Metro High Tech Park and Thales Canada, and receives support from the government of the province of Quebec.

Urban transport

Thales is a global technology leader with unparalleled experience in ground transportation systems. No other company in the world is able to offer such an extensive portfolio of electronic and IT systems for urban transport operators, from signalling and traffic supervision to communications, security and revenue collection.

Thales employs close to 1,300 people at its urban transport signalling business in Canada. The Toronto centre of excellence is where Thales develops the increasingly innovative technologies needed to support urban mobility.

A pioneer in urban signalling

Thales first developed the CBTC signalling concept in the 1980s, and this fully- automated, integrated and modular solution remains the market leader to this day. The SelTrac™ CBTC system is in service on 86 lines in 40 of the world’s largest cities, including New York, Vancouver, London, Paris, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai, equipping a total of 2,500 km of track and serving over 3 billion passengers per year.

The SkyTrain rail system in Vancouver, one of the longest automated rapid transit systems in the world, with 79.6 km of track, relies on CBTC technology from Thales. Opened in 1985 as a legacy project of Expo 86, SkyTrain was the first large-scale public transport system to use fully computer-controlled trains.

The SkyTrain network has been extended several times; the most recent Evergreen Extension to the Millennium Line began revenue service in December 2016. The Vancouver rapid transit system now has 53 stations and continues to provide extremely safe and reliable service thanks to Thales technology.

Security

Positioned as a value-added systems integrator, equipment supplier and service provider, Thales is one of Europe’s leading players in the security market. The company’s security business works closely with public service agencies, local authorities and businesses to develop and implement the integrated and robust solutions needed to protect citizens, sensitive data and critical infrastructure.

Thales offers best-in-class cryptographic systems and is a world leader in cybersecurity solutions for defence, government, critical infrastructure providers, telecoms operators, industry and the financial sector. With a value proposition spanning the entire data security chain, Thales offers a comprehensive range of services and solutions, from security consulting to data protection, digital trust management, development, integration, certification and security maintenance of cybersecured systems, and cyberthreat management.

In 2016, Thales opened a Cybersecurity Operations Centre (CSOC) in Toronto, which provides information system supervision and intrusion detection for the most demanding customers. This is Thales’s fifth CSOC worldwide, alongside the other centres in France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Hong

supplier and long-standing

partner of the Department of

National Defence, helping the

Canadian Armed Forces to

accomplish increasingly complex

missions.
