FROM THE EDITOR...Good afternoon and welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we welcome Harrow Borough for today’s Ryman League encounter.

Keith McMahon’s side come into this afternoon’s game looking to halt a recent run of results that has left the Mead up against it in the battle to avoid the drop, but you can be sure that everyone at the club will be giving it their all until the death to pull off the great escape.

A one-all draw with Enfield last time here wasn’t quite the result that the side were hoping for, doing our visitors more favours than ourselves, before travelling to AFC Hornchurch and falling to a 2-0 defeat last weekend.

With teams running out of things to play for, and with a run-in that takes in many of these teams, let’s hope the Mead’s desire will pull off another run of form similar to that between November and February - come on the Mead!

BEST OF THE REST...

03www.thamesmeadtownfc.co.uk

Good afternoon and welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead for today’s Ryman League Premier Division game against Harrow.

Firstly, may I welcome the players, officials and supporters of Harrow to our new home, Sporting Club Thamesmead. I’d also like to welcome our MP, Teresa Pearce and the pupils of Jubilee School who also join us this afternoon for our Kick It Out day.

I hope that you all enjoy your brief stay with us this afternoon and wish you all a safe journey home later on this afternoon.

The last time we faced Harrow was back in November at Earlsmead, in what proved to be a very tight encounter - although we snuck it to win 2-1, I’m sure today’s game will be equally as close.

Our two most recent games have ended in a 1-1 draw against Enfield and a 2-0 defeat at AFC Hornchurch.

Unfortunately, the Enfield result didn’t help either side too much as we both needed all three points in our respective battles to climb out of the bottom four.

At Hornchurch, I thought we were

particularly unlucky as, having gone a goal down at the break, we played much better after the interval - we hit the bar and had two efforts cleared off the line only to concede a killer goal in the final ten minutes.

Although it is looking increasingly difficult for us to stay in the league, there are many points to be played for and I know they will all fight until the bitter end - we can just win our games and hope for other results to go our way.

Finally, congratulations to our U13s for

reaching the Kent County Cup Final, where they face Vinters at Faversham Town next Sunday 23rd March.

It’s a 10.30am kick-off and, if you can make your way down there, I’m sure they’ll be pleased to have your support.

They’re the future of Thamesmead Town Football Club, and we wish them well for both Sunday and the rest of the season as, at this present time, they are top of their league too!

Enjoy the game,Terry

THE MANAGER

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to today’s game with Harrow Borough - firstly, may I take this opportunity to welcome my mate, Dave Anderson, and his side this afternoon.

I would also like to welcome our esteemed guests from the local council, as well as the children from Jubliee School who I already work closely with - I hope you all enjoy your afternoon with us today.

We’ve had two games since my last set of notes and, in keeping with the season to date, we ought to have got more from them!

Last time here saw us draw 1-1 with Enfield, but our second half performance warranted all three points. Enfield took the lead through a very dubious penalty, but we showed great character to come back with Danny Phillips’ very good goal.

That was followed by a 2-0 defeat away at AFC Hornchurch last weekend. Again, it was a very good performance and we should have got something, but we just seem unable to score at the moment whilst we’re on top.

We dominated the whole of the second half and even hit the bar too, but the ball just wouldn’t go into the net. I’m sure someone will be on the end of a hammering soon but it has to come soon or else it will be too late!

That defeat, coupled with Enfield’s midweek win, dropped us two places and into the bottom four with just eight games to play. But if people think we’ve thrown in the towel then they don’t know me and shouldn’t be

near me, as I still believe we’ll do it.

We have twenty-four points to play for and, until it’s mathematically impossible, I will continue to believe.

I’m working harder than ever and putting in the hours needed - I’ll do everything in my power to help us beat the drop.

In my ten years at the club I’ve never experienced failure and it isn’t something I’ll allow to happen without a fight. Our small club has come such a long way and, having been here for nearly a season now, I believe we deserve to be here.

We’re as good as any team on our day and the club is run better than most. To top it off, we have some of the best facilities available as well, so we no longer have to be in awe of the teams around us in this division - instead, we need to be proud of what we have achieved so far.

If we’re to survive then everyone has to pull in the same direction on and off the pitch - if I’m honest, the latter hasn’t really happened this year.

Some good news off the pitch may help us to generate some on it, and if we can put one final run together then who knows what can happen?

Let’s hope we can start with three massive points today against a good Harrow side. It will be a tough ask but, if we can start taking our opportunities, then we have a good chance.

It’s certainly make or break now though, so you’ll see us being very positive and attacking teams from the off - let’s stay positive because hard work and determination can achieve a lot.

Enjoy the game,The Gaffer

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of Harrow to the SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

May I also give a personal welcome to our local MP, Teresa Pearce, and three of our local councillors - Sandra Bauer, Manir Malik and Harry Persaud, as well as the pupils of Jubilee Primary School who will join us today for our special day of ‘One Game, One Community’.

Since our last home game here we’ve visited AFC Hornchurch where I thought we were bright and played well without putting the ball in the net. It’s something to rectify if we are to pull out of trouble.

As is often the case for teams in our position, Keith has added problems in that clubs are coming in and offering our younger players greater figures than we are able to. It has probably been well documented locally by now that Tommy Whitnell has this week moved to Dulwich Hamlet to try and win promotion - I wish him well and will miss having a pint and chat with his dad, John, throughout the game. Let’s hope he finds company at Dulwich.

The end of the season is approaching with only eight games to go, and we have deadlines to meet at the SCT. We’ve been granted permission by our landlords to carry out the required work to achieve the Grade C we need by the end of the month. We have to convert the Gents WC into a trough and add in an extra turnstile, but we feel well placed to ensure this is completed.

Someone asked me the other day why I’m still working so hard for a club after twenty-

eight years when I could have retired - well, I tried having a break after Maidstone but I was bored, and there’s only so much you can do in the garden. Besides, my roses and vegetables did just as well regardless of whether I was there on a Sunday!

I think I’ve taken the club to my heart and it reminds me so much of things I achieved at Maidstone. Nobody said it would be easy, and it was made more difficult with our surprise promotion, but we have a heritage and loyal committee who continue to work hard as unpaid volunteers.

I’ve had the privilege to work with one of the best young managers at this level of football in Keith, and we must do everything

to ensure he continues his wrk here which started over a decade ago.

There is a new problem that needs our attention every day, but we always overcome them. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve burnt the midnight oil to meet our aims, but we all work for each other and believe we will achieve.

That is why you’ll see everybody supporting Keith and the boys to ensure we are all still playing football in the Ryman Premier League next season. Let’s get behind the team today.

HARROW

This afternoon the Mead welcome Dave Anderson’s Harrow side to Sporting Club Thamesmead, with the Boro still looking warily over their shoulders.

Just two points from their last possible fifteen has left the side from Earlsmeadow just nine points clear of the drop having played a couple of games more than their nearest rivals, and they will be looking for a maximum haul this afternoon.

Boro come into their trip to the SCT today having just faced a double-header with Enfield Town, drawing 1-1 last Saturday before slipping to a one goal defeat in midweek.

The results mean that Enfield can keep the pressure up on Boro, with three

games in hand to close the nine point gap between the sides.

However, Dave Anderson remains confident that his side will have enough to get themselves over the line.

“I thought we did well,” he reflected after last weekend’s draw.

“In the first half we dominated, but I think the squad’s good enough now so I’m confident.”

If the Mead are to give themselves any chance of survival, the side must start winning games, particularly at home, and fast - so it looks set to be a committed battle for the points this afternoon as both sides continue their respective fights for survival.

08 The Mead v Harrow Borough

Roxonian FC was founded in the summer of 1933.

The Club spent their first season in the Harrow and District League (playing their home games at a ground on Northolt Road), finishing runners-up in Division 1. They were accepted into the Spartan League, which coincided with the move to Earlsmead.

1938 saw Roxonian finish runners-up in Division 2 (West) but they had to wait for promotion until the following season, as only the champions went up. This was achieved under the new name of Harrow Town.

The early 1980s saw the Club’s most successful spell so far. The Middlesex Charity Cup was won in 1980, the Middlesex Senior Cup three years later. Also in 1983 Harrow Borough reached the semi-finals of the FA Trophy, losing to the eventual winners, Telford United, over two legs.

A year later, the Club’s Golden Jubilee was celebrated with a drawn match against Manchester United, Harrow’s best FA Cup run so far, losing to Newport County (then of the old Football League Division 3) in the 2nd Round Proper and best of all, winning the Isthmian League Premier Division championship by a staggering 17 point margin.

Under astute manager Micky Tomkys, Harrow had enjoyed continuous success but his retirement in 1986 saw a gradual decline in the Club’s fortunes.

1992/93, however, saw a dramatic improvement, with both the Middlesex Senior Cup and Middlesex Charity Cup returning to Earlsmead. The semi-final of the latter saw Chelsea defeated 4-1. A league placing of 8th was also their best for 6 seasons.

This form continued over the next three seasons under the management team of Harry Manoe, with the Club finishing 9th in 1993-94, 10th 1994-95 and 9th again in 1996-97. A dip in the Club’s fortunes saw his departure, to be followed by a succession of managers. A disastrous

run of form during the 1999/00 season saw the Club avoid relegation by just a single goal.

Despite an encouraging start to the season to the 2000/01 season, which saw Boro’ reach the 1st Round Proper of the FA Challenge Cup for only the second time (losing 0-3 at Wycombe Wanderers), a poor run of performances after Christmas saw the Club finish 4th from bottom again with just 2 points to spare.

2001-02 saw the club commence a long-term plan, targeting youth development. As well as fielding a young side, which managed to retain Premier Division status once more, close partnerships were formed with local youth football clubs. The summer of 2004 saw the formation of an Allied Counties under 18’s squad, designed to bridge the gap between youth and senior football.

Under the stewardship of manager David Howell Boro’ continued their youth and community development and they now have links with a number of local youth football clubs and schools.

Season 2006/07 saw Boro’ finish in a relegation position only for their Premier Division place to be saved by Lancaster City whose financial difficulties saw them being relegated instead.

On a pleasanter note season 2005-06 saw Boro’ win the Middlesex Senior Charity Cup for the 3rd time with a 2-0 success over Enfield Town. Season 2006-07 saw the feat replicated with victory over Brook House 5-4 on penalties following a 0-0 scoreline with that game being played at Staines Town FC. Season 2008-09 saw Boro’ finish as Runners-Up in the Isthmian League Cup, losing out to Tilbury 2-0 in the Final played on the ground of Staines Town FC. That season also saw Boro’ reach the Semi Final of the London Senior Cup.

Season 2009-10 saw Boro’ finish in a very creditable 14th position in the Ryman Premier Division, At Reserve Team level Boro’s Capital League side, under the stewardship of Stuart Crawford, brought much success to the Club by winning the double of the Capital League: Western

Division Title to go along with that of Capital League: President’s Challenge Cup winners. Added to the fact that Boro’ had cleared their longstanding debt with HM Revenue & Customs and the Club entered the 2010-11 season with new found optimism.

A final position of 5th at the end of that season was their highest placing for a considerable number of years and earned the Club a place in the end of season play-offs for promotion to the Conference South. Defeat at Tonbridge Angels in extra time in the Semi Finals saw an end for the timebeing of that dream but it was still a brilliant season for the Club.

And Boro’ were the highest goalscorers in the Ryman Premier Division with 77 goals scored. They also reached the 1st Round Proper of the FA Cup, losing out narrowly to the eventual League 2 Champions, Chesterfield, and giving the Boro’ faithful much pleasure and entertainment on the way.

But during the summer Boro’ received shock news that Manager David Howell had decided to resign his position, taking with him his Assistant, Ken Charlery, and the other members of his Management Team. This meant a hard summer for the Boro’ Board and for new manager Dave Anderson who returned to the Club he had served previously as Reserve Team Manager and then Assistant Manager on three separate occasions. Dave added the vastly experienced Jason Goodliffe to his Management Team and with a completely new team on the pitch a final league position of 17th was very acceptable after what was a very difficult season.

The summer of 2013 saw Assistant Manager Jason Goodliffe depart to take up a similar position with Football League Division 1 side Stevenage. Mark Faulkner joined the Management Team with Darron Wilkinson moving into the Assistant Manager’s position.

Off the field an important addition was The Axis Group who have become the Club’s new Main Sponsors, and who have big plans for the development of the Club over the coming seasons.

RYMAN LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE ROUND-UP:

RYMAN REVIEW

Wealdstone returned to the top of the Ryman Premier’s table with a tight 2-0 win at relegation-threatened Wingate & Finchley on Tuesday night.

Wingate started well and hit the bar with an Ahmet Rifat flicked header. But after dominating the opening spell, Wealdstone gradually came to the fore and Mark Bentley opened the scoring right on the stroke of half-time from close range.

The lead was doubled three minutes after the break when Carl McLuskey rolled home through a crowd of players after the Blues failed to clear a corner properly.

Bognor Regis Town maintained their good form and completed a third successive victory at Imber Court with a 2-0 success against Metropolitan Police.

James Crane gave the Rocks an 11th minute lead and they eventually doubled that on the hour-mark, Terry Dodd scring from the spot.

At the other end of the table, Enfield Town picked up three valuable points at home against Harrow Borough.

Town were gifted the lead on the half-hour mark when Harrow failed to deal with a cross and Corey Whitely was on hand for a simple finish. Noel Imber kept them in front in the second half with some good saves, including a late penalty save to deny Harrow a share of the points.

Canvey Island survived being down to ten-men to secure a comfortable 4-1 win at New

Lodge against Billericay Town.

The home side led through Isaac Layne`s 38th minute effort. Rio Bryan-Edwards equalised five minutes into the second half before the Gulls were reduced to ten-men when defender Matt Game was sent-off. But John Sands gave them the lead on 68 minutes and goals in the final six minutes from Jay Curran and Harrison Chatting sealed victory.

Bury Town finished their game at the Beveree against Hampton & Richmond Borough with nine-men as the Beavers beat the Rams 3-0.

Belal Aite-Ouakrim gave the home side an early eighth minute lead and he doubled his side`s advantage just before half-time.

Aite-Ouakrim completed his hat-trick four minutes into the second half.

Second-bottom Carshalton Athletic’s game at Leiston was abandoned after a traffic accident caused heavy delays on the A12 and the match referee called the game off with the Robins unlikely to arrive before 9pm.

The only game in the Ryman Premier on Monday night saw a very tight encounter between Hendon and Lowestoft Town who were sitting eighth and seventh in the table respectively at the start of play.

After a tight contest, a late penalty for the Trawlerboys with four minutes to go was converted by Jack Ainsley to move the visitors up to fourth spot.

THE TREATMENT ROOM:

BEHIND THEGREEN DOOR

THE PHYSIO

Welcome back for today’s game and welcome to all who have joined us from Harrow Borough.

I could write about the last few games we’ve gone through where we’ve missed chances and conceded goals, but they’re gone now and we can’t do anything about them.

Instead we need to start focusing on what we still have in front of us and the task ahead. We have to play every game as though it is a cup final as, in our situation, that’s what every game is for us.

We have some points on the board, despite playing more games, and it’s

down to us to keep on adding to that as much as we can.

We all know that we’re in a dogfight, and the only people able to get us out of that is ourselves collectively as a group.

There are no excuses left to be had, it’s time for every person to stand up and be counted. I knoe that each and every one of us has given one-hundred percent all throughout the season, but we need that one final push as I know that the team are capable of picking up enough points - let’s start that today!

Ever since I’ve been at this club, people

have always tried to put us down - but every time so far we’ve managed to prove them wrong. Whether that’s winning the Kent League treble to where we find ourselves now, we just seem to love being the underdog.

For once, the treatment room was empty on Thursday so I had an easy night. Fortunately that means the Gaffer has a full squad to choose from today with a clean bill of health.

The lads were buzzing and I know they’re chomping at the bit for three points today - get behind them!

Enjoy the game,Alan

THE MEAD WIN AWARD FOR BEST NEW STAND

The club were thrilled to find out this week that Groundtastic magazine had awarded Sporting Club Thamesmead the ‘Best New Stand’ award.

After years of delays, the rebuild here at Bayliss Avenue was finally completed last summer to provide us with the fantastic facilities that we’ve been able to enjoy throughout the current campaign.

And everyone at the club was delighted to see that the hard work had paid off when details of the award were received from Groundtastic, a magazine that focuses on football

grounds throughout the country.

There will be more details in the forthcoming Lewes programme when the presentation takes place.

Meanwhile, the SCT is currently undergoing some further development in order to meet the

required grading for the league.

Director Paul Bowden-Brown explained: “We need to carry out the required work to achieve Grade C by 31st March. We have to convert the Gents WC into a trough and add in an extra turnstile, but we feel well placed to ensure this is completed on time.”

For 20 years, Kick It Out has contributed to making football a safer, more enjoyable and less intimidating place for those from under-represented communities wishing to participate in the game in whatever capacity, at whatever level.

To that end, a season’s worth of events is taking place to acknowledge the wealth of groups and individuals supporting this work in their own communities over the past two decades. For professional clubs, community groups and County FAs, the campaign provides a broader opportunity to dedicate their commitment to Kick It Out, and equality and inclusion, over a longer

period of time.

Nominated events and projects, which ordinarily take place in October, can now run at a time throughout the season to fall in line with the extended period of activities. And today we welcome everyone to the SCT as we host our very own 2014 “Day of Action” as shortly before kick off as the two sides come out of the tunnel, representatives both from the club and the local community Kick It Out was established as a campaign with the brand name ‘Let’s Kick Racism Out of Football’ in 1993 and as an organisation in 1997.

The organisation works within

the football, educational and community sectors to challenge discrimination, encourage inclusive practices and work for positive change. The campaign is supported and funded by the game’s governing bodies, including founding body the PFA, the Premier League and the FA. It hasn’t all been plain sailing for the campaign however as the campaign has come under criticism from ethnic minorities in the football industry for insufficiently punishing players and fans convicted of racist abuse.

At the end of a footballing week marred by racial abuse and violence in an international under-21 fixture between England and Serbia

At the start of the current season Kick It Out marked 20 years of campaigning against racism in the game that we all love so very much. The traditional weeks of action

campaign in October have this year been replaced with a special ‘season of action’, which commencd at the beginning of the 2013/2014 season and concludes in May. Today we

join again join in the campaign as Mike Green looks into where it all began, and how far the campaign, now spanning two decades, has grown.

THE FEATURE

in October 2012, the campaign organised for Premier League players to wear shirts bearing the organisation’s logo before their matches.

However, the directive was boycotted by several black players, including Rio Ferdinand, Micah Richards and Jason Roberts in protest against the lack of action by the organisation in the wake of recent high-profile cases of footballers racially abusing their opponents during matches. One of Kick It Out’s main strengths is the unwavering and steadfast support the campaign receives from communities across the country and that its why its so important for club’s like ours to get involved with the Campaign. Since its inception, Kick It Out has worked hard to build up trust from a diverse range of individuals, groups and organisations wishing to use football as a way of developing strong community cohesion. Association Football has a unique ability to unite people from all walks of life and provide opportunities for those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Kick It Out utilises the passion there is universally for football to convey a lot of its key messaging by going into schools, youth clubs and community initiatives and delivering presentations on equality and inclusion. The overall aim of the campaign is to ensure that all communities are embraced by football and opportunities in the game are widely available to everyone.

The game has the power to facilitate long-term engagement and build sustainable relationships. For some, grassroots football simply

means fun and recreation. For others, it’s a far more serious pursuit. Either way, Kick It Out’s presence at this level is vital. We all know that grassroots clubs have vastly different issues to those at the professional level, as people run out of the love with the game or lose the personal fulfilment they once had.

Kick It Out aims to help bridge the gap between leading bodies within the game, affiliated football and people who historically may have felt excluded or overlooked. Football is now only the third-biggest sport in terms of participation in Britain with numbers continuing to fall. Therefore, it is crucial that the game becomes more inclusive than ever before. Nationally, there are still thousands of leagues and hundreds of thousands of teams.

Yet, football is lagging behind

the rest of society in terms of representation. This is an issue Kick It Out is keen to address. The campaign is able to provide clubs with practical advice on capacity building, funding applications and who the key decision makers are in their area. Kick It Out realises the important role played by grassroots clubs in their local communities. Understanding different peoples’ beliefs, their culture and the issues facing them can help make football more accessible and encourage them to get involved. And that is why we here at Thamesmead Town Football Club are delighted to be involved with the Season of Action this afternoon and to show our support and we thanks the members of our own Junior section and to the pupils of the Jubilee Primary School here in Thamesmead for their help.

MATCH REPORT:

ACTION REPLAY

It was such a vital game for both sides, especially for the Mead after losing so badly at East Thurrock on Saturday, and with both teams desperate for points the draw was inevitable.

Sadly the point will probably suit our visitors more but just how vitally important could Danny Phillips second late late goal in successive home games prove to be come the end of the season.

The first half wasn’t the greatest 45 minutes of this or any other season, but it was the visitors who took the game to the Mead and could have been ahaed at half time.

Tyler Campbell came closest after Sam Mott had been unable to hold a Brad Quinton shot and Campbell was first to the loose ball.

We were fortunate to escape a big scramble in our box whilst at the other end were inches away from opening the scoring when Phillips’ screamer was fractionally too high!

The second half was a much more open contest with Tommy Whitnell being denied by a fine save from

Enfield keeper Noel Imber.

Enfield had chances from Campbell and Stevens blocked, and whilst at the other end Lewis Tozer’s header into the six yard box stuck in the mud before being cleared ass Ryan Doyle hooked the ball off the line with Imber beaten.

Mott then denied Quinton before Junior Baker was penalised for a push in the box and Liam Hope kept his cool and composure to drill the visitors ahead from the spot. Knowing that we had to get something out of the game, the Mead upped a gear - pushing the visitors back deeper and deeper. There was a

lucky escape when a corner pinballed around the box before being cleared by Doyle without a green shirt on hand to touch the ball home.

Jack Hopkins curled a shot past Imber’s far post as the Mead went for blood, before finally Mead found a way through when a ball into the six yard box from the right was drilled past Imber by Phillips.

The Mead so very nearly found an unlikely winner when, deep into injury time, Rashid Kamara drilled a low shot which needed a super save from Imber to keep the precious points shared and deny the Mead the win we so desperately were looking for.

Another week and another managerial departure in the Skrill Premier – albeit one that was entirely avoidable and predictable.

The Andy Thorn experiment at Kidderminster was ended after 54 days with Harriers slipping down the league table and in danger of missing out on the play-offs.

That the club decided to sack Steve Burr back in January was bizarre enough but they then committed the ultimate sin – appointing a man with no Non-League experience.

Thorn is obviously well respected throughout the game and was scouting for Roy Hodgson ahead of this summer’s World Cup. But did he have any real knowledge of Non-League prior to his Aggborough appointment?

This seems to happen time and time again yet clubs don’t seem to be learning from each other’s mistakes.

When Stockport County’s rapid decline led them into Non-League, they pinned their hopes on Dietmar Hamann.

A fantastic footballer with top level experience no doubt, but a Non-League manager? Not surprisingly, he lasted just the four months before resigning.

And then last season the Hatters did it all over again. Mid-way through the season they appointed Darije Kalezic as their boss.

On paper he was as impressive as you can get. A Dutch Second Division winner with De Graafschap and then a manager in the Belgian top-tier with Zulte Waregem. He has since taken over as reserve team boss at PSV Eindhoven so he’s no mug. But he didn’t

know Non-League.

After Kalezic’s departure, County vice chairman Spencer Fearn said. “Despite Darije having excellent calibre and being a top quality coach the move, for a number of reasons, just hasn’t worked out how either party had envisaged.” Quite.

Barnet are another decent example although the Bees have done well on their return to Non-League despite the Edgar Davids sideshow.

The ‘will he? won’t he?’ attend debacle that followed every Barnet away game was farcical but a lot of players have spoken about his positive influence on the club.

Davids resigned back in January but did anybody really expect a man who had played for Ajax, Juventus, Barcelona and Inter Milan to relish away trips to Braintree and Hyde?

At least Barnet had a man who knows Non-League like the back of his hand in Paul Fairclough to steer the ship in the right direction.

And what makes these errors even more frustrating is the amount of good Non-League bosses without jobs.

When openings outside the League crop up, the same names seem to be circulated – and all with good reason.

Gary Brabin has experience at the top of the Non-League game with Cambridge United and Luton and has been out of the game for a while, much like Hyde’s Conference North winning chief Gary Lowe.

Marcus Law had a phenomenal record with Barwell and then continued his education at Kettering and Tamworth while former Barrow boss Dave Bayliss is an FA Trophy winning manager.

Despite the amount of capable names on the market, clubs are still falling into the trap of so called ‘high profile’ appointments.

And if you really need the proof of what Non-League experience can do, go down to Kenilworth Road. Would the Hatters swap John Still for a flashy appointment from the continent? I doubt it!

On a very busy day here at the SCT, it’s a warm welcome to all of our guests on the day that the Mead show our support and continued backing for the fantastic work that the Kick It Out campaign have been doing for the past 20 years. Firstly though, we welcome the players, officials and the supporters of Harrow Borough who join us here at the SCT for the first time - we hope that M25 behaved itself on your trip south of the river and that you enjoy your time with us. We also welcome local dignitaries this afternoon - the Rt Hon Teresa Pearce MP for Thamesmead and Erith who, along with our local Thamesmead East Councillors - Cllr Sandra Bauer, Cllr Manir Malik and Cllr Harry Persaud - joins us today. We sincerely hope that you enjoy your afternoon and hope that you have a good day. A big welcome too goes to the pupils of Jubilee Primary School who are the first to experience the SCT School’s Matchday Experience that we’re looking to roll out right the way across Thamesmead for next year! The children will enjoy a Q&A session with the Gaffer and members of the board, as well as meeting the players while getting autographs. I’d like to thank Dan Carbone at the school for making today’s trip possible, and hope that you’ll be able to bring more of your pupils with you next time! Now if your school would like to take part in the SCT Matchday Experience, please contact me and you could be next! Continuing with thanks, and this time to the Cooper family for their sponsorship of the home Man of the Match award. At our last home game against Enfield the award went to Danny Phillips, but who will join Danny on the list? Please join us in the Mead Bar after the game when we’ll make both presentations at around 5.15pm. Finally today, our next home game is in a fortnight’s time when we welcome Lewes to the SCT on Saturday 29th March - kick off 3:00pm. Why not take advantage of our Bring A Friend For A Fiver special offer?! Please see the leaflets around the bar this afternoon. Enjoy the game,Greenie

NEXT AT THE SCT:LEWES

With the season nearing its conclusion for the Mead now, the fixture list has regained a traditional normality to it with no more evening games scheduled.

With that in mind, it is another fortnight until Keith McMahon’s side return to match action here at the SCT as we welcome midtable Lewes.

Any play-off push at the Dripping Pan that looked feasible just two weeks ago has been dealt a severe blow with back to back defeats, leaving the Rooks with

a fifteen point deficit to make up in their remaining thirteen games.

With AFC Hornchurch the fifth-placed team to cast their eyes on, it was a damaging loss on Wednesday evening when the Urchins dispatched of Garry Wilson’s side by five goals to one.

“We’ve been well beaten tonight and we never really gave ourselves a chance from the kick off,” Wilson explained after the defeat.

“It’s a big learning curve for us and

gives us a better idea of what we need to do going forward to compete with the better teams in our division.

“Hornchurch were lively, got out of the blocks quickly and will be under pressure to get into the play-offs, but they should do with what they’ve got here - but we never helped ourselves and we almost gifted them four of the five goals.”

With little left to play for, the Mead will be hoping it is an ideal opportunity to seize some more crucial points.
