NNR BOARD 2015-2016

NNR (Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach) is a not-for-profit organization of

volunteers dedicated to serving the Nonthaburi community and supporting local

charities since 1994. We achieve this by publishing Thani Talk, a free monthly

magazine that has a distribution of 1,400 copies, as well as hosting an annual charity

bazaar. We host monthly socials and organize monthly tours. There are no

membership dues, and anyone living in Nonthaburi is already a member.

Meet More NNR Board Members

I am the Thani Talk Advertis-

ing Coordinator and have been

doing this for about 2 to 3 years.

My family and I moved here

from the United States over 15

years ago. I have kept busy by

raising three children and helping

out in different ways in the

community. Through the years, I have enjoyed

volunteering with ISB’s PTA and the Booster

Club, and meeting people through the NNR.

I also enjoy biking, traveling, and learning

new things.

After that brief cultural experience, we had

always kept the possibility of living in Thailand

as an option. I still remember shopping for

fruits and vegetables outside the “Green Gate”!

This is my first year serving as Treasurer

on the NNR Board. I’m a professional tax and

financial accountant and still maintain a small

account load to maintain skills and my federal

license.

I enjoy cooking, outdoor activities and

spending quality time traveling, or staying at

home with family and friends.

In addition to NNR, I volunteer my time

and expertise to a variety of charitable organiza-

tions such as: Project New Hope International, a

nonprofit serving the impoverished in Trujillo,

Peru & Ecuador, and the Mid India Christian

Mission, a nonprofit sponsorship organization

for widows and children in India.

Laura Sadowski

Livonia Winkles

I’m a U.S. citizen, and my

family and I relocated to Thailand

in July 2014. We originally fell in

love with Thailand in 2004, when

we lived in Danicha Garden

temporary assignment.

If you you’d like to know more, keep reading….

Anyone can join and it’s lots of fun!

The Running Dinner is a progressive dinner where you will have your starter, main course and dessert

at different homes. You will be with your spouse for the entire night. You do not have to run; a bike or

golf cart will be perfect to travel between houses, as all meals will be in, or very near, to Nichada.

We also ask that if you sign up, you are able to host a meal for 8 people in Nichada or within golf cart

range of Nichada.

One week before the event, you will be contacted and asked to host a starter, main, or dessert for about

8 people on the evening of Nov. 28th. If you have an allergy, let us know, and if you are hosting for

someone with an allergy, we will let you know.

The ‘Run’ will start at 7.30 pm. It´s important to be on time at every course. Each course takes roughly

an hour with 15 minutes’ travel time between the courses.

There are no rules when it comes to what you can serve when you are the host. It’s always nice to

bring a bottle of something to your host for your other courses.

You will not know where you will be going for your starter until the day before the Running Dinner,

and you will not know who will join you until the course begins!

Then you will not know where, or with whom, your next course will be, until the end of your starter

and so on….

After dessert, everyone will find out where the after party will be, and that’s where we all see each

other for a drink and a dance. It’s a fun and delicious evening!!

If you are keen to join in the fun; sign up at [email protected] before the 13th of November

2015. We need your name, spouse´s name, address, phone number and any allergies.

For more information, please send an email to [email protected]. Hope to see you there!

tranquil garden.

We will start the tour with a walk to a local

Thai market for an introduction about ingredients.

The course is taught in English by profes-

sional instructors and is very hands on. Every

Sports & Events at ISB

Our expatriate community here in Pakkred is

blessed with a wealth of venues and resources for

sports activities that help us stay active and fit.

For children, ISB’s after-school activities,

from dance to gymnastics to sports, are further

supplemented by regional sports leagues such as

Bangkok Youth Soccer, North Bangkok Basketball

League, and Bangkok Baseball & Softball Associ-

ation. Be sure to keep up with news from the

school’s Community Activities Office for league

registration details and other important infor-

mation that may interest your family.

For adults, sports groups also cover a wide

and diverse spectrum. Whatever your athletic

avocation may be, there is a good chance that

there’s a group of fellow enthusiasts who would

like to get together.

The Community Activities Office (CAO) at

ISB aims to provide an exemplary, well-rounded

program for community-related after school

opportunities. We allow for participation in a wide

variety of recreational, educational and competi-

tive athletics and activities in a safe, dynamic,

enjoyable and encouraging environment.

These activities are run and operated by

members of the ISB Community, for the ISB

Community. Volunteer parents and students are an

integral facet of the program. Many of the activi-

ties involve a fee, which is used to cover the cost

of operating the activity, including payments to

instructors. Some activities run year-round, with

others going for a semester or in a 2-3 month time

period.

The CAO provides assistance and support to

these activities; helping with registration, pay-

ments, facilities booking, general finances, and

being a central location for parents and students to

get information about these activities. We endeav-

or to enable volunteers to focus on running a quali-

Sports Round Up Beginning on page 12, Thani Talk introduces

you to a variety of community sports groups for

adults. From Zumba dancing to tennis to bicycling

to Masters swimming, the organizers welcome you.

If one of the groups piques your interest, get

in touch. It’s a terrific way to make new friends.

Sports groups in Bangkok are not limited to

what’s conveniently available to us here in Nontha-

buri. In other parts of town, groups such as the

Thailand Tigers (Australian Rules Football), The

Bangkok Cricket League, and Bangkok Soidawgz

(Ultimate Frisbee) also meet up on a regular basis.

at major book stores) for a complete listing of all

the mundane tasks involved. We also strive to

bring cohesiveness to all the organizations by

streamlining and standardizing some of the

processes being used.

These activities operate mainly within the

ISB community, although some will represent

ISB in competitions with other schools, both in

Bangkok and in the SE Asian region.

Tuesday Women’s Tennis - Come join a great

group of ladies for a fun morning of tennis. We

have eight regular players that meet at 8am Tues-

day mornings at the Nichada courts for two hours

of intermediate level tennis. Substitutes are always

book group is by invitation.

Chris Oglesby coordinates the week-

end rides, which are often split into different

groups depending on type of bike and length

of ride.

Meg Sine and Kevin Sypolt organize

the weekday rides. The Monday ride is usu-

ally around 35-40 km, good for those who

are new to riding here. It is usually done on a

mountain bike or hybrid. The Wednesday

ride is a bit faster and longer, approximately

50-60km, and riders use a road or mountain

bike.

There is also a monthly weekend bike

hash about 2 hours outside of Bangkok.

For information, please contact Chris

"Zumba is a fun activity, and classes have been

offered for more than 5 years in Nichada! Zumba

class is where you mix a variety of dancing

rhythms with aerobic fitness. After an hour of

dancing you can feel the results: body work and a

high spirit! We offer classes at Chaengwatana

Community Church on Mondays, Tuesdays (Latin

Rhythms), Wednesdays and Fridays, from 7:30am

to 8:30am.

The local Zumba group was started by our dearest

friend Mary Turner at the end of 2010. After she

left, Deana Turner taught us, and now we have a

team of six instructors. We have over 90 people

on our Zumba mailing list. On September 21st.

we celebrated "Zumba Peace Day" with a special

celebration for our participants, and on October

12th. and 14th. we participated in "Party in Pink

In addition to sharing the joys of Zumba and Latin

Volleyball is a fun team sport. Unfortunately there

are limited spaces for people to play. About 10

years ago interested ISB staff members started a

small game in the school’s Rajendra Gym on

Monday and Wednesday evenings. It was a place

for players of all levels to come and have a fun

game of volleyball with friends.

Today, these volleyball games still take place

from 6:30pm - 9pm. Since it started the group of

people who come and play changes on a regular

basis, but there is a strong core member group that

continues to show up and play. Staff, parents and

their spouses living near ISB are welcome to come

and join the group. The goal is to simply provide a

location for people to enjoy volleyball, get some

exercise and have a good time.

Masters Swimming

" I cannot fly, but swimming is the next best thing.

The water is my sky. Most swimmers are just

superheroes who have to settle for the nearest

Swimming is the best sport in the world—it feels

just like flying." (Author unknown)

Start "flying" with Masters swimming! There are

two groups in the Nichada area. One meets in the

ing group swims on Tuesdays and Thursdays

from 7:30am - 8:30am at the Nichada Pool.

more information about the morning group.

The ISB afternoon group has been swimming on

Mondays at 4:30pm at the ISB 25-metre pool.

In addition, there is a a Masters Swimming

Google group that shares information on

swimming, local swimming events and has a small

On October 11, in support of Breast Cancer

Awareness Month, NNR organized a breast cancer

screening session for local women workers. The

goal was to raise awareness and provide an oppor-

tunity for early detection of this potentially life

threatening disease in some of the Thai women in

our neighborhood.

The majority of Thai women diagnosed with

breast cancer are already in the advanced stages (3

& 4) of the disease, leading to high mortality rates.

This could have been avoided had they been diag-

nosed in the early stages and received correct treat-

ment at the appropriate time.

NNR is pleased to report that all women

checked at the October 11 screening program got a

clean bill of health.

Over 30 women from the workers camp

came along to Nichada Plaza, they were shown an

educational video about self examination, given a

presentation about breast cancer, and learned how

to detect lumps by practicing on breast moulds. In

addition those who chose to, were offered a clini-

cal breast exam. Two volunteer doctors performed

the breast exams in a screened off room provided

by Nichada: Dr Rani is a member of the Bangkok

Breast Cancer (BBC) support group; Dr. Sally is

part of our own community and an active member

of the Association for the Promotion of the Status

of Women (APSW).

The worker women

were given lunch and a

reusable cotton shopping

bag containing brochures

in Thai about early

detection and the disease

itself.

Students from the

ISB Breast Cancer Sup-

port Group were also

there to entertain chil-

dren with activities while

their mothers were being

examined.

As a followup to the October program, wom-

en over 40 and others needing additional screening

were taken to Mongkutwattana Hospital for a

mammogram and ultrasound. This was possible

thanks to the generous contribution of some of our

community families who were sponsoring, and

donations from NNR.

Want to make a difference? Want to feel

more balance in life? The Home for Destitute,

located nearby off Tiwanon Road, is a government

homeless shelter that offers food, shelter, and

medical assistance to over 400 destitute people in

the area.

Initially a shelter for about 245 people, it has

grown in numbers since my initial visit over two

years ago. Khun Thanida, a staff member, recog-

nized the need of the more capable residents to use

their hands and be productive. Thus, the “craft

team” was born.

From their humble beginnings in a small

exercise room braiding strips of old t-shirts into

rugs, the craft team has moved into the administra-

tion building and has expanded their wares.

Khun Manipa, a shelter resident, and others

on the crafts team work tirelessly sewing the rugs,

wine bags, and most recently Halloween

bags. These are bright orange pumpkin bags that

are perfect for trick-or treating and were made

available for sale through Facebook.

Hand-sewn, reusable Christmas gift bags

will be on sale at the upcoming NNR Bazaar! The

residents who make bags receive a percentage of

the profits. Remaining proceeds are reinvested in

the craft team program.

For example, with money from their sales at

last year’s NNR Bazaar and Nichada’s Secret

Garden night market, the shelter crafts team bought

an industrialized sewing machine.

Thursdays at 10 a.m. are our weekly NNR

visits to the home where we check in with the craft

team as well as visit the wards of the more elderly

and disabled women. Though I speak little Thai,

these women have become dear friends.

Imagine our joy to return to the shelter this

past August, after being away for summer break,

to see new humble entrepreneurial ventures such

as raising100 ducks (selling the duck eggs),

“farming” frogs (to eat/sell), planting vegetable

gardens (as physical activity for residents and to

supplement their meals), and a new croquet set for

leisure play.

If you have 1-2 hours a week, please join us

on Thursdays for a truly cherished and unforgetta-

ble experience helping in the community.

Join the Volunteers Who Help the Homeless

Over the past month, I have had the opportunity

to reach out to the woman and children at Home

for the Destitute. My time given has been very

little: separating and handing out donated clothing

to prepping and delivering fresh fruit. Yet this

small offering has brought tremendous returns by

teaching me what it means to live in thanksgiv-

ing. I am always touched by the expressions of

thanks that I receive, be it a simple smile or the

blowing of kisses. Despite their trials, they find

ways to say thank you. I leave with a greater de-

Music Run: A Fun Family Race

As parents we sometimes struggle to find

new or different things that we can do together as

a family on weekends without the influence of

iPads, Minecraft and other enthusiasm killers.

On November 7, there will be a Music Run

at Suan Luang Rama 9 Park which might interest

your family. My family attended last November,

and we highly recommend it.

At the time it was Mum & Dad (well into

our mid-life crises), 7-year-old Sophia and 4-year

-old Jack (or as he said….”nearly 5!”).

With more than 10,000 participants, the

event was much bigger than we had expected.

There was plenty of music and excitement

before the start of the race, with organizers

getting everyone pumped up for the run and

lobbing free T-Shirts and other gifts into the air

for people to catch. The race itself was a pleasant

5km run (or walk if you prefer) around the park

with strategically placed speakers playing music

of all tastes to encourage you along the way.

After the run there were refreshments and

food available as well as a DJ music concert

which was alcohol free and great fun for the

whole family.

Music Run was well organized and a lot of

fun.

Vision Center Just Around the Corner

Best Smoothie at Best Price

There’s a great new vision center, Visionaries

Optical, located in the Oasis Shopping Center on

Samakkee Rd., right next to Baan Kimchi Korean

Grill. I made an appointment and was seen the

very next day. The doctor was friendly and spoke

a little English. The project manager, Khun Lak-

sami, spoke excellent English and was available

for translation during every step. She was helpful

and confident.

The equipment used for my eye test was brand

new, as they have only been open for a few

weeks. In my opinion, it was NOT outdated.

They had an excellent selection of frames, from

designer to children's. The shop also had contact

lenses on site.

They are open 7 days a week, from 10am-5pm. I

have seen them stay open past 5pm on occasion.

I think the prices are fantastic. I bought two pairs

of glasses, both with progressive lenses and an

It’s refreshing especially on a hot day. Other

favorites are the manao (fresh squeezed lime)

smoothie and the chocolate one (Milo based, I

think). The chocolate smoothie tastes like a rich,

chocolatey mousse. There are berry smoothies

such as strawberry, blueberry, etc. that are syrup

based. The price is great, the service is always

with a smile, and worth any wait. What will I

Isan dancers at That Phanom demonstrate the

traditional wai used when greeting a monk or

Buddha image. The clasped hands are held high

in front of the forehead. Performed with hands at

a much higher level than the chest or nose, this

wai is an expression of utmost respect to a

superior.

The above photo illustrates the traditional hand

level for a wai from a young person to an elder.

The student holds her hands higher than nose level

and greets her teacher with hands at her eyebrow

level, with head slightly bowed. The teacher

returns the greeting with hands held at chest level.

The young ladies above are of similar age and

greet one another with hands clasped respectfully

in front of their chests. The degree with which

they bow their heads may possibly indicate that

one may be a subordinate, or is younger.

The “Wai” is a traditional form of greeting

in Thailand and other parts of Asia. Here in the

Kingdom of Smiles, the wai is used instead of a

handshake, in most situations.

While it is perfectly fine for a foreigner to

extend a hand for a handshake, it is a gesture of

good well to return a wai and to do so properly.

To offer a wai in a respectful manner, bring

your hands together and keep your elbows close

to your sides. Place your hands at the levels

recommended below and lower your head as

appropriate. As for the problem of knowing

when to wai or not: When in doubt, wait for a

cue from the Thai person you’re meeting.

Knowing how to greet others properly in

your host country will help you make a good

first impression and get you off to a good start.

Cambodia: A 3-Day Tour

We arrived in Siem Reap on a Saturday afternoon

at The Shinta Mani Club and promptly went on a

tour of of Bantaey Srei (the pink temple), Ta

Prohm (the jungle temple) and Pre Rup for sunset.

The tour was arranged by the excellent hotel staff

upon our arrival. We saw many temples on a 3-day

Angkor Wat pass bought on Saturday afternoon at

about 2pm. If you buy your pass after 4:30pm, then

the count begins the next day.

Bantaey Srei is about a one-hour drive from Siem

Reap. It is a unique pink sandstone, one-level tem-

ple with amazing intricate carvings. It was built by

a member of the royal court rather than a king.

Ta Prohm (the jungle temple) makes you feel like

you have just walked into a scene from Tomb

Raiders. The magnificent trees and roots are literal-

ly breaking the temple apart -- a shame, but also

amazing.

Pre Rup at sunset was disappointing because it was

too busy, and we have seen much better sunsets.

Sunday, we rose at 4:30am and took a tuk tuk to

Angkor Wat to watch the sunrise — us and 1,000

others. It was truly beautiful, and exploring Ang-

kor Wat right after sunrise was ideal because the

crowds had gone back to their hotels for breakfast.

Our second sunrise tour was of Srai Srang, and we

walked across the road to Bantaey Kdei, our first

giant faced temple. Then on to see other attrac-

tions such as the Southern gate passage of Angkor

Thomn and its many faces, The Bayon, Baphuon,

Phimeanakas/Royal Palace, Sras Srei, Preah Pali-

lay, Terrace of the Elephants and Terrace of the

Leper King. It seemed like we were all alone in the

palace area, which made this a fantastic, transport-

ing experience.

In the afternoon we took a tuk tuk out to the

Roluos group, which are some of the oldest

temples. The visit was interesting but only if you

have extra time.

Next stop was Phnom Penh, a big gritty city

known primarily as the center of Pol Pot’s reign of

terror or the ‘Killing Fields’. We arrived at the

Khmer Rouge killing fields by tuk tuk and lis-

tened to an informative audio tour that explained

the terror of Pol Pot’s reign. On the way back we

stopped at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a

former high school, known as S21, that was used

as a prison and execution grounds. We read about

the atrocities at S21 and met two of five survivors.

Cambodia is a wonderful place to visit and not to

be missed. Spend most of your days at Siem Reap,

and if you have time, travel to Phnom Penh. If

you are a foodie like we are, you will enjoy all the

wonderful Khmer and French food at very reason-

able prices.

During our 3-day tour, we experienced the

richness of Cambodian history and culture, and

we saw how the country has successfully moved

on from a painful past, but not forgotten it.

Highlights: NNR Tour of Ancient City

NNR arranged a wonderful trip to Ancient

Siam. I recommend this trip to everyone, especial-

ly newcomers. It is an overview of Thai history

and is a geography trip that will help you decide

which places you would like to see in person on

your next vacation.

Ancient Siam, also known as Muangboran,

(Ancient City), is a huge park located about 1 hour

and 15 minutes from Nichada. It is laid out like the

country of Thailand. Each section has historically

significant replicas of the great temples, statues,

and distinguishing features of each region of Thai-

land. There are replicas of over 100 famous places

in Thailand.

Admission includes the use of a bicycle or a

ride around the park on the shuttle. For an addi-

tional cost you can rent a golf cart or a mountain

bike. There are signs in Thai as well as English to

explain each exhibit. Allow a minimum of three

hours to see the park.

Admission is reduced if you bring proof that

you are a resident of Thailand. Pets are not

allowed. Prepare to do a lot of walking as you

enter the buildings and walk around the garden

areas.

During my first visit we rode bicycles and

had a blast. It is a very easy ride with something

to see around every turn.. This time I joined

friends on a golf cart and could cover a lot more

ground.

You can go into most of the buildings and

admire the beauty, the artistry and the history

within each building. There is a replica of the

mountain temple Prasat Phra Wihan, Si Sa Ket.

Hike to the top for an incredible view. Go with

your friends or go with your family. There is truly

something for everyone to enjoy. If you aren't into

history, enjoy the food stalls and souvenir shops at

the replica of the floating market. Enjoy the repli-

ca of a Northern Thailand village with its live

chickens and cattle. Marvel at the craftsmen recre-

ating works of art out of wood. See the various

replica of royal barges.

It was my second visit to Ancient Siam. I

enjoyed it immensely and look forward to return-

ing. It is never the same experience twice.

Upon arriving in Bangkok earlier this year, I heard

about the Ancient City and was curious to see

what it was about. I really enjoyed riding the bike

around the park and visiting all of the beautiful

buildings and sites. I particularly liked watching

the crafts people working on their amazing master-

pieces. Another highlight was climbing up to the

top of the lookout which provided a great view of

the park and the surrounding area. After biking

through most of the park, it was nice to meet up

with the group and enjoy a lovely lunch by the

floating market. I am sure I will visit again at

some point with my family.

Tawandang: Brewery Dining with Show

Directly opposite Homepro on the new

road to Chaengwattana, a new branch of

Tawandang Brewery opened up a few months

ago, offering competition to Paulaner Beer

Garden, a smaller restaurant on the same road.

Just like its famous sister branches on

Rama 3 and Ram Intra roads, the Chaengwattana

branch is a massive purpose-built facility that

offers German-style beer made at its own brew-

ery, plus a wide selection of Thai, Japanese and

German cuisine, including its signature deep-

fried pork knuckle served with mashed potatoes

and sauerkraut. At 480 baht, the pork knuckle,

tender inside and crispy perfection outside, is a

generous serving of the German classic dish.

To wash down your dinner, three kinds of

beer are on offer: Lager, Dunkel and Weizen.

First-time diners can request samples of all three

in order to decide on their favorite. All are avail-

able from .3 litre mugs (100 baht) to popular beer

towers (2 litres for 560 baht and 3 litres for 840

baht).

For an international flair to our dinner, my

husband and I ordered Somtam Thai (green papa-

ya salad) to add a refreshing counter point to the

pork knuckles. We were not disappointed. The

strands of green papaya were fresh and crunchy

with just the right amount of kick from the lime

juice and palm sugar. The kitchen staff readily

accommodated our request for somtam prepared

farang style without red hot chili peppers.

We struck out with several sautéed vegetable

choices (small portions of greens sautéed in unin-

spired brown sauces) until we finally discovered a

unique stir-fried Morning Glory dish that slices the

vegetable length-wise, thus creating pasta-like

strands of Morning Glory that literally look like a

plate of linguini al pesto when served. Gently stir-

fried with garlic, the Morning Glory was a delight.

A meal at Tawandang comes complete with

live entertainment on a professional stage, and a

team of singers, backed by an 8-person band, take

turns belting out western oldies made famous by

the BeeGees, Roberta Flack, Whitney Houston,

and more, as well as Thai pop songs. Most of them

have pretty good voices. During breaks for the

singers and band, other performers such as

aerial dancers and magicians take to the stage.

The Chaengwattana branch, with a

spacious ground floor dining area with private

rooms to the side, plus a 2nd floor horseshoe

shaped loft with a good view of the stage, has

seating capacity for 1,300 guests. Sunday nights

are less crowded and average 700 guests, , but

Friday and Saturday nights are usually packed,

said assistant manager Bom Kaeban.

On nights with celebrity guest stars, such

as singer/movie star Mai Charoenpura who head-

lined on October 21, Tawandang is also packed.

If you enjoy what Tawandang has to offer,

be sure to sign up for the Tawandang member-

ship card, which offers a 15% discount.

The beer towers, the international cuisine,

and the stage show create a festive atmosphere,

which seems to attract not just families with

children but also diners enjoying a night out with

friends.

In the event your teenager and his/her

friends discover Tawandang, please be advised

that the drinking age in Thailand is 20.
