Women DirectorsAshwini Iyer TiwariAshwini Iyer Tiwari’s Neel Battey San-nata  uses the mother-daughter story with its few ups and many downs to draw other sub-plots of how determi-nation can overcome the struggles of everyday life. The film scores not only in terms of its simple storyline but also in terms of the screenplay and the di-rector’s ability to flesh out every single character so that they appear credible placed against a reality setting. The director has kept cinematographic and production values distanced from glamour. The best part about the script lies in the way it depicts the change in Chanda’s character, the ‘matric fail’ who is de-

termined that her daughter will not be a ‘matric fail’ and finds herself becoming a stu-dent after many years. In Neel Bat-tey Sannata, the mother decides to give competition to her unfocussed daughter who has

no dreams in life and does not want to pass her matric exam.Nil Battey Sannata was released under the title of The New Classmate inter-nationally, the film garnered critical acclaim and Tiwari was praised for her direction and sensitive handling of the subject matter.Tiwari delighted us all over again with her wonderfully entertaining  Bareilly

Ki Barfi. She brings one more subtle feminist statement in Bareilly Ki Barfi, said to be the first Bollywood film to have been shot entirely in Bareilly. The feminist statement is so subtle, that if you do not follow the naughty but open pranks of Bitty, her parents included, you might miss it completely. Iyer won the Zee Cine Award 2017 for best Di-rector for her directed film Bareilly ki Barfi. She also won the Filmfare Award for Best Director at the 2018 ceremony.Tiwari’s two films are polar opposites of each other that testifies that we now have a gutsy director who is versatile, ready to experiment with the main-stream and the off-mainstream and also make a powerful political state-ment about girls and women not given the choice to live life their own way.Ashwiny Iyer was born on 15 October 1979 to a Tamil Hindu family and grew up in the suburb of Mulund, Mumbai. She studied in St Marys Convent and did her higher studies from SIES col-lege of commerce and economics. She is married to writer-director Nitesh Tiwari and lives with their twins in Chembur.A gold medalist in commercial arts from Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai, Ashwiny spent 15 years in the adver-tising agency Leo Burnett (India). She won several awards like Cannes Lions, New York festival, One show, Promax and the Goafest Awards. She quit Leo Burnett to follow her passion in film-making. She made her first short film What’s

ARIES (21 March – 19 April) This is a strong time for tending to important details, creating budgets or plans, and think-ing about priorities. You are especially industrious and come up with inventive ideas and practical solutions. It’s also a good time for personal mag-netism. Simplifying and organizing efforts can be very effective now, and purifying as well. You can present original and unique ideas in an attrac-tive package right now, and you might want to take advantage of this energy. It’s a good time for tightening up your routines, as well as considering ways to clear up unfinished emotional busi-ness. Favorable Dates : Sep 1, 3, 10, 12, 19, 21Favorable Colors : Red & White

TAURUS (20 April – 20 May) This can be a good period for dealing with a business or financial partner, or dealing with other people’s money (taxes, debts, inheri-tances, loans, joint finances). You can have issues with your daily life, not being able to stick to a routine, misplacing things, forgetting things, or issues with your health, not sticking to a healthy lifestyle, avoiding healthy eating or exercise, or old health issues flare back up. 20 Favorable Colors : Yellow & White

willing than usual to work on the tech-nical details of your plans or artistic pursuits. Relationships are steady and reliable right now. Laxman, Liza Malik ... Special Ap-pearance, Sravani Goswami ... Bimla, Sangeeta Tiwari ... Sarla, Sheila Shar-ma ... Kamla, Rajpal Yadav ... Special AppearanceMusic Director: Manoj SantoshiDirector: Narayan ChauhanAmmaa Ki Boli revolves around an old-aged widow, mother Ammaa (Fa-ruk Zafar), her 5 grown-up children’s and a second-rate two-seater scooter

living in a small town. Ammaa’s five grown-up chil-dren’s, namely Parmu (Gov-ind Namdev), Jeetu (Sita-ram Panchal), Rukmi (Sanjay Mishra), Ka-lavati (Himani Shivpuri) and Hari (Zakir

Hussain), are all well-settled and have their own 2-seater vehicle. However only Rukmi doesn’t have and thus he steals nearly Rs. 40,000/- from Am-maa’s safe-box and buys a second class two-seater scooter.Soon the scooter met with a strange ac-

cident because of the two local boys and so does the exposure of robbing money from Am-maa. A group meeting was then finally called up and the scooter was declared as ‘Sarvajanik Scooter’ (multi-purpose scooter) where anybody and anyone in the family can use it. However this doesn’t go down well with Rukmi and the story takes a complete turn in a sheer hilarious manner, where how it changes from the key of this second-rate scooter to Ammaa’s funeral, forms the crux of the story. This film also deals with the importance of relations in present scenario; this is a satire on family relations between a mother and her five children which explained in a form of comedy.

Khayyam passes awayMohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hash-mi, Khayyam was born on 18 February 1927 in  Rahon  in Ludhiana,  Punjab, India. Khayyam married Jagjit Kaur in 1954 in one of the first inter-commu-nal marriages in the Indian film indus-try. They had a son, Pradeep, who died of a heart attack in 2012. Inspired by their son’s helping nature, they started a trust, “Khayyam Jagjit Kaur Chari-table Trust” to help artistes and tech-nicians in need. As a boy, Khayyam ran away to his uncle’s house in New Delhi. There he trained under classical vocalist and compos-er Pandit Amarnath. He went to Lahore looking for roles in films. There he also learnt music from  Baba Chishti  who was a famous Panjabi music director. One day Khayyam went to meet  Baba Chishti, and after listening to a composition by Chishti sung to him its first part. Im-pressed, Chishti gave him an offer of joining him as an assistant. Khayyam assisted Chishti for six months and came to  Ludhiana  in 1943. He was only 17 then. After a stint in the Army in the Second World War, Khayyam went to  Bom-bay to fulfil his dream and made his de-but as Sharmaji of the Sharmaji-Varm-aji composer duo with the movie Heer Ranjha in 1948. He went solo after his co-composer Rahman Varma went to the newly created Pakistan post parti-

tion. One of his earliest breaks was in the film Biwi (1950) in which the song “Akele Mein Woh Ghabrate To Honge” sung by Mohammed Rafi was a huge hit. “Shaam-e-Gham Ki Kasam”’ sung by  Talat Mehmood  from the film  Footpath  (1953) struck a chord among the masses. He gained greater recognition from the film Phir Subha Hogi  starring  Raj Kapoor  and  Mala Sinha, in which songs written by  Sa-

hir Ludhyanvi and sung by  Mukesh  and  Asha Bhonsle were set to tune by Khayyam. Notable amongst them are  “Wo Subha Kabhi To Aayegi”, “Aasman Pe hai Khuda Aur Zameen Pe Hum” and “Chin-o-Arab Hu-mara”.Songs from the film Sho-la Aur Shabnam  writ-ten by  Kaifi Azmi  es-tablished Khayyam’s reputation as a great

composer. From the Chetan Anand di-rected Aakhri Khat “Baharon Mera Je-evan Bhi Sawaron” by  Lata  and “Aur Kuch Der Theher” by Rafi were huge hits. Other notable songs are from the film  Shagun  which had Khayyam’s wife Jagjit Kaur sing “Tum Apna Ranj-o-Gham” and “Tum Chali Jaogi”.The 1970s saw Khayyam team up with  Sahir Ludhyanvi  once again to work in the  Yash Chopra-direct-ed  Kabhi Kabhie.  The songs showed Khayyam’s versatility with huge hits like  “Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein

who was found brutally murdered and wrapped in a polythene bag.Arun Kumar (Bellamkonda Sreenivas) is an aspiring filmmaker who wants to make a movie on psychopaths. After being rejected many times despite hav-ing a good script and due to pressure from his family, he decides to give up his dreams and become a sub-inspec-tor with the help of his brother-in-law, Prasad (Rajeev Kanakala), a police of-ficer himself. He moves and stay with his sister Sopna (Vinodhini Vaidyana-than), Prasad, and their daughter Siri (Abhirami). Siri gets into trouble when she makes Arun forge her father’s sig-nature in her report card as she failed in two subjects. Her class teacher Krish-naveni (Anupama Parameswaran) figures this out and thinks that she

signed it herself. Siri brings Arun to her school to act as her father. Later, which Siri is caught by her parents, this leads them to transfer their daughter to another school. Later, Arun meets and befriends Krishnaveni and her niece Kavya (Dua Kaushik), who is speech deprived.A teenage school girl named Amrutha is abducted on her way back home. Her parents then find a mutilated doll’s head in a gift box attached to their dog’s collar. Arun finds a similarity between Samyuktha, who was murdered few days ago, and Amrutha, both of them being 15-year-old school students who were kidnapped while returning home from school. He tries to convince ACP Lakshmi (Suzane George), his superior egotistical officer, that this was a psycho

at work, but his theories are brushed off as fake stories.Later, Amrutha’s corpse was found brutally mutilated. On top of that, Am-rutha’s body was scarred all over with a knife while she was alive. Arun sug-gests the corpses be hidden from the public to prevent the killer from gain-ing public attention. Initially, the offi-cials opposed this idea owing to break-ing protocols, but they eventually give in, moving the bodies to a secret facil-ity under Dr. Kishore (Surya). Soon after, another school girl named Meera (Priya) is abducted. She happened to be from Siri’s ex-school. The search leads to a teacher named So-maraj (Vinod Sagar), who works at Siri’s current school and is revealed to be a pedo-phile who is preying on s c h o o l g i r l s . Arun encounters Somaraj trying to molest Siri and beats him up before detaining him. Somaraj admits to be-ing a sexual predator but denies having anything to do with the murders. In a bid to escape, he holds Venkat (Keshav Deepak), a policeman, at gunpoint. Arun manages to gun Somaraj down inside the lift thereby saving Venkat.Meanwhile, Siri is abducted during her birthday party at home. Arun and Prasad try to find her but they were too late. Arun discovers her mutilated body in their own car trunk, implying that she is also killed. To make things

worse, Arun is suspended for his neg-ligence on shooting Somaraj. Dejected and angry, Arun investigates the case by himself, with the help from a few po-licemen. Finding an audio clip from the hearing aid of Meera, he traces it back to an old lady magician named An-nabella George’s (Saravanan) perfor-mance at the victim’s school function. The lady used her magic show as a tool to kidnap the girls since she impressed all the students with her magic tricks. She invites one student to perform an act and then interacted with the select-ed student to get closer to them. Then, she started to stalk the selected student leading to their kidnap exactly on the

second day after meeting them, with-out any hassle. This leads him to the next po-tential victim, a schoolgirl named Sanja-na (Trishala). Arun realised

that he was following the wrong girl due to Sanjana having a twin sister. Sanjana was abducted, even though she was under surveillance. Arun tracks her location to a house in the city, where he narrowly saves Sanjana from being murdered. The perpetrator escapes, but her identity is revealed to be Mary Fernandez (her real name), who was involved in a killing a long time ago. Arun finds more about the case from the investigating officer, Jaya Prakash, (Radha Ravi), a retired cop.Mary’s son Christopher (Yasar) had

Zoya AkhtarZoya Akhtar, daughter of Javed Akhtar and sister of Farhan, believes in direct-ing mainstream films. Yet, her first film  Luck By Chance  (2002), was not exactly mainstream. In fact, it was a satire on mainstream cinema, on film schools, on auditions all of which un-derlined the struggle of young men and women with stars in their eyes who come to Mumbai to enter films but mostly fail. The film’s strength lies in making real actors play themselves as characters strongly tinged with negative shades, barring a few like Shahrukh and Amir. The falseness, the arrogance, the jealousy, the coy ma-noeuvrings, the pain, the one-up man-ship, the film school lecture, the party scene filled with memorized lines from Rani Mukherjee and the rest, come

across through subtle, light touches. Her second film,  Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) is a high-budget, multi-starring male buddy film that fetched her several awards and fattened the producer’s bank balance in terms of the box office returns on the film. It is a spectacular road movie that travels across continents with the three bud-dies taking their last journey as bach-elors stopping along the way to explore the fun in adventure sport ranging from deep-sea diving, sky-diving through running with the bulls right up to the Tomatina festival filmed with the dynamic pace and ceaseless action it demands, spilling over the invite the audience to participate in the fun.  Her short film Sheila Ki Jawani within the longer four-short films called Bom-bay Talkies  (2013) is offering a mov-ing insight into enforced gender-con-ditioning by a dictatorial father who wants his son to become a football play-er. But the son hates football and wants to dance like Katrina Ka-poor. Her next film,  Dil D h a d a k n e Do(2015) followed her style of high production values, big stars, to narrate a story of a stinking rich family that take a luxury cruise in celebration of the marriage anniversary of the patri-arch and his wife when the dysfunc-

Zoya’s stepmother is Shabana Azmi. Her younger brother, Farhan Akhtar, is an actor and director. She attended Maneckji Cooper and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Xavier’s College, both from Mumbai. Later, she joined the New York Univer-sity Film School to learn film produc-tion.Her great-grandfather, Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi, a scholar of Islamic studies and theology, edited the first diwan of Mirza Ghalib on his request, and later became a figure during the Indian Re-bellion of 1857 in his native Khairabad. She is great-granddaughter of re-nowned Urdu poet Muztar Khairabadi and granddaughter of poet Jan Nisar Akhtar.Zoya does not believe in any religion.Zoya started her career as co-director of a music video called Price of Bul-lets for a rock band called Pentagram. She has worked as a casting director for films including Dil Chahta Hai and Split Wide Open, and as an assistant di-rector for her brother Farhan Akhtar’s films Lakshya and Dil Chahta Hai. She then worked as an executive producer for her longtime partner Reema Kag-ti’s Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., also produced by Excel Entertainment. After Dil Dhadakne Do, Zoya Akhtar directed Gully Boy starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, loosely based

on the lives of Mumbai rapper Naezy.Akhtar and Reema Kagti are also work-ing on a story for Amazon Prime web series Made in Heaven about two wed-ding planners, to be produced by Excel Entertainment. She has been invited by the Academy Awards to be a member of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Reema KagtiReema Kagti made her debut with a sparkling entertainer, a journey film that explored man-woman relation-ships in different dynamics in Honey-moon Travels Pvt Ltd. (2007) with the stories of four couples off on their re-spective ‘honemoons’ to Goa on a lux-ury bus, each with problems of its own. This entirely character-driven film that blends itself into the road movie genre offered delightful entertainment, with-out big stars, from beginning to end.Her second film Talaash – The Answer Lies Within  (2012) was a psychologi-cal thriller which also made a strong socio-political statement on the posi-tion of sex workers in our society. She used a lot of surrealism, fantasy, prayer to departed spirits, automatic writing, a marriage falling apart by a tragedy shared by both husband and wife and a whole lot of issues but did not lose track of the main issue – the criminal marginalisation of a prostitute. She is now directing Gold adapting the true story of India’s first ever Olympic medal winner. She has established her

Farah KhanFarah Khan has no qualms about mak-ing out-and-out mainstream films complete with wonderful song-dance numbers which are a throwback to her long track record as a very successful choreographer. Her debut film  Main Hoon Na  (2004) was produced by Shahrukh Khan’s  Red Chillies Enter-tainment. It boasted a very good acting cast and though it did not quite get its message across, it drew packed the-atres all the same. This was followed by  Om Shanti Om (2007). This film combined several genres – family drama, war, and espio-nage, lots of music and dance and ro-mance through two couples that spelt out its director’s objective of making mainstream films with lots of, masalas.

Though it drew several complaints and led to court cases, the film turned out to be a big hit filled with lovely songs and an audience-f r i e n d l y story of a young man’s struggle to become a star in Bollywood. She manages to draw in producers will-ing to put in very good money for her high-end projects though the films af-ter OSO such as Tees Maar Khan (2010) was a flop and Happy New Year (2014) was really a bad film. But she keeps on moving and is not one to be stopped by disappointments.

DEEPAK OBHRAI (1950-2019)

Continued on page 45

Deepak Obhrai was born on July 5, 1950 in Oldeani, Tanganyika, now Tanzania, to a Punjabi family. His father died when Obhrai was six, so he was raised by his mother, who worked at a bank. Obhrai went to primary school in Moshi, a town near Mount Kilimanjaro, and went to high school in Arusha before transferring to the prestigious Daly College in Indore, India. He moved to the United Kingdom and trained as an air traffic con-troller. Disillusioned by discrimination he faced in Britain, he returned to Tanzania to work. In 1976, Ob-hrai was on duty at a nearby Tanzanian air-port when the Enteb-be raid took place in neighboring Uganda.Obhrai immigrated to Canada in 1977 with his wife Neena, whom he had married in 1971, and his daughter Priti. Obhrai retrained as an accountant in Cal-gary and got a job with the municipal government. With his wife, he estab-lished a dry cleaning business that expanded to three stores. In the 1990s Obhrai became more involved in Calgary community life, serving as the president of the India-Canada Association of Calgary, the Monterey Park Community Associa-tion, and the Hindu Society of Cal-gary. He also was the vice-president responsible for Alberta in the Na-

tional Indo-Canadian Council. In 1993, Obhrai lost a race for an alder-man position on Calgary City Council. He launched a failed bid for the Pro-gressive Conservative nomination for a provincial byelection in Calgary-Mc-Call in 1995, and for Calgary-Montrose in 1996.Obhrai's successful bid for the Reform Party of Canada nomination in the 1997 federal election. He won the riding, and was re-elected when the Reform Party

became the Canadian Alliance in 2000. In 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, and 2015 he was elected as a member of the Con-servative Party of Can-ada. Nusrat Fateh Ali KhanNusrat Fateh Ali Khan born Pervez Fateh Ali Khan on 13 October 1948 in a Punjabi Muslim family in Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan, shortly after the par-tition of India in 1947 during which his family had migrated to Pakistan from their native city of Jalandhar in Punjab, in the village of Pholiwala. His family originates from Basti Sheikh in Jalandhar. His ancestors learned music and singing there and adopted it as a profession. He was the fifth child and first son of Fateh Ali Khan, a musicologist, vocalist, instrumental-ist, and qawwal. Khan's family, which included four older sisters and a younger brother, Far-rukh Fateh Ali Khan, grew up in central Fais-alabad. The tradition of qawwali in the fam-ily had passed down through successive generations (Patiala gharana)for almost 600 years. Initially, his father did not want Khan to fol-low the family's vocation. He had his heart set on Nusrat choosing a much more respectable career path and be-coming a doctor or engineer because he felt Qawwali artists had low social status. However, Khan showed such an aptitude for and interest in Qaw-wali, that his father finally relented. He began by learning the tabla before moving on to vocals. In 1964, Khan's father died, leaving his musical educa-tion under the supervision of his pa-ternal uncles, Mubarak Ali Khan and

Salamat Ali Khan. He is the uncle of singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Nusrat was known as Pervaiz until he visited Ghulam Ghaus Samdani who changed his name to Nusrat Fateh Ali. Samdani also told him that he would become a great singer. In 1971, after the death of his uncle Mubarak Ali Khan, Khan became the official leader of the family Qawwali party and the party became known as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mujahid

Mubarak Ali Khan & Party. Khan's first pub-lic performance as the leader of the Qawwali party was at a studio recording broadcast as part of an annual mu-sic festival organized by Radio Pakistan, known as Jashn-e-Baharan. Khan sang mainly in Urdu and Punjabi and occasionally in Per-sian, Braj Bhasha and

Hindi. His first major hit in Pakistan was the song Haq Ali Ali, which was performed in a traditional style and with traditional instrumentation. The song featured restrained use of Khan's sargam improvisations. In the sum-mer of 1985, Khan performed at the World of Music, Arts and Dance festi-val in London. He performed in Paris in 1985 and 1988. He first visited Ja-pan in 1987, at the invitation of the Ja-pan Foundation. He performed at the 5th Asian Traditional Performing Art Festival in Japan. He also performed

Nusrat.. from page 50at Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York in 1989, earning him admiration from the American audience.Khan, throughout his career, had great understanding with many south Asian singers such as Alam Lohar, the Noor Jehan, and various other Pakistani and Indian singers. In the 1992 to 1993 academic year, Khan was a Visiting Artist in the Eth-nomusicology department at the Uni-versity of Washington, Seattle, Wash-ington, United States. In 1988, Khan teamed up with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ, which led to Khan being signed to Gabriel’s Real World label. He would go on to re-lease five albums of traditional Qaw-wali through Real World, along with the more experimental albums Mustt Mustt (1990), Night Song (1996), and the posthumous remix album Star Rise (1997). Khan’s experimental work for Real World, which featured his collabora-tions with the Canadian guitarist Mi-chael Brook, spurred on several fur-ther collaborations with a number of other Western composers and rock musicians. One of the most notewor-thy of these collaborations came in 1995, when Khan grouped with Pearl Jam’s lead singer Eddie Vedder on two songs for the sound track to Dead Man Walking. Khan also provided vocals for The Prayer Cycle, which was put together by Jonathan Elias, but died before the tracks could be completed. Alanis Morissette was brought in to sing with his unfinished vocals. In 2002, Gabriel included Khan’s vocals

on the posthumously released track “Signal to Noise” on his album Up.Khan’s album Intoxicated Spirit was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album in 1997. That same year, his album Night Song was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.Khan contributed songs to, and per-formed in, several Pakistani films. Shortly before his death, he composed music for three Bollywood films, which includes the film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, in which he also sang for “Koi Jaane Koi Na Jaane” on-screen with the lead pair (Bobby deol and Ashwariya), and “Zindagi Jhoom Kar”. He also composed music for Kartoos, where he sang for “Ishq Da Rutba”, and “Bahaa Na Aansoo”, alongside Udit Narayan. He died very shortly prior to the mov-ie’s release. His final music composi-tion for Bollywood was for the movie, Kachche Dhaage, where he sang in “Iss Shaan-E-Karam Ka Kya Kehna”. The movie was released in 1999, two years after his death. Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar sang for the songs he composed in his brief stint in Bolly-wood. He also sang “Saya Bhi Saath Jab Chhod Jaye” for Sunny Deol’s movie Dillagi. The song was released in 1999, two years after Khan’s death. He also sang “Dulhe Ka Sehra” from the Bol-lywood movie Dhadkan which was re-leased in 2000.Khan contributed the song “Gurus of Peace” to the 1997 album Vande Mata-ram, composed by A. R. Rahman, and released to celebrate the 50th anni-versary of India’s independence. As a posthumous tribute, Rahman later re-
