Welcome to Tech and Trek!About the Program The Tech and Trek Conference is an opportunity for Middle School through Higher Ed Educators to explore The Mindful use of Technology, Mobile Technology, Creating High-Impact Student Experiences, and Innovations in Teaching and Learning.

This is an educational technology conference that spans three days and two nights on the beautiful campus of Hiram College. At the conference, you will…

• Form and sustain a collaborative bridge for higher ed and 6-12 educators and technologists.

• Participate in an ongoing dialogue between higher ed and 6 -12 educators and technologists regarding the mindful use of technology.

Alan November Alan November is an international leader in education technology. He began his career as an oceanography teacher and dorm counselor at an island reform school for boys in Boston Harbor. He has been director of an alternative high school, computer coordinator, technology consultant and university lecturer. He has helped schools, governments and industry leaders improve the quality of education through technology. Alan was named one of the nation's fifteen most influential thinkers of the decade by Classroom Computer Learning Magazine. In 2001, he was listed one of eight educators to provide leadership into the future by the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse. His writing includes numerous articles and the best-selling book, Empowering Students with Technology. Alan was co-founder of the Stanford Institute for Educational Leadership Through Technology and is most proud of being selected as one of the original five national Christa McAuliffe Educators. Kathleen Heinlen, Ph.D Kathleen Heinlen, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Counseling Dr. Kathleen Heinlen has served as an Assistant Professor of Counseling at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) since 2010. Dr. Heinlen is a licensed psychologist and a licensed professional clinical counselor with supervision endorsement. She has presented at state and national conferences on the topics of Traumatic Brain Injury, Veterans, Caregiver Issues, Grief, Attachment Disorder, Clinical Ethics, Telepsychology, Trauma, Mindfulness, Suicide and Self-Care. Lawrence A. Tomei Lawrence A. Tomei is Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and a professor in education at Robert Morris University. Born in Akron, Ohio, he earned a BSBA from the University of Akron (1972) and entered the US Air Force, serving until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1994. Dr. Tomei completed his MPA and MEd at the University of Oklahoma (1975, 1978) and EdD from USC (1983). His articles and books on instructional technology include: Professional Portfolios for Teachers (1999), Teaching Digitally: Integrating Technology Into the Classroom (2001), Technology Facade (2002), Challenges of Teaching with Technology Across the Curriculum (2003), and Taxonomy for the Technology Domain (2005).

Join us for a discussion at the crossroads of reflective practices, project-based learning, and experiential treks. We'll merge a "depth of reflection model" with Digital Promise's best practices in high-impact learning to create framework for implementing and innovating in this space. We'll showcase a few exemplars from courses across content areas at Hiram, such as podcasts, "thought-casting" vlogs, and journaling. We'll develop the idea of "multi-modal reflection" and how it can compliment digital media PBL. We'll close with an invitation to extend the party with a PLN and possible Northwoods Fieldstation retreat this summer.

Considering the huge cost for technology innovations, it is no wonder many good schools have opted out of technology dependence. Group A. What Good Game Design Has To Teach Us About Learning

Join this playful session centered around the award winning board game Pandemic! We’ll explore Jim Paul Gee’s framework for what good game design has to teach us about learning and then team-up and trek out to cure a global epidemic. This cooperative learning model teaches systems thinking and problem solving. We’ll take the discussion a step further to look at implementing a variety of games and models to meet learning outcomes across content and age levels.

Join us for low impact exercise and a conversation about the impact of tech on physical activity. We will examine recent literature that has examined how technology can impact our physical activity behaviors. More specifically, we will discuss how common cell phone functions (e.g., talking, texting, listening to music) can influence exercise intensity, enjoyment (i.e., liking), and balance. Finally, we will also discuss how the iPad can influence children's engagement in a variety of age-appropriate physical and sedentary activities.

Group B. Hiking: What Nature is Around You - Exploring Ecosystems at Hiram College’s Field Station

The James H. Barrow Field Station covers 550 acres of land that include several different ecosystems, such as old-growth beech-maple forest, young forests, a cold-water stream, ponds, wetlands, and old fields of varying ages. We will hike trails to explore these ecosystems and experience what nature we come across during our trek. Feel free to take pictures so you can share what you saw! The hike is about 2.5 to 5 miles, depending on weather, ground conditions, and our disposition. Come dressed for being outdoors in nature. The trails include hilly terrain and can be wet and slippery. So wear appropriate hiking shoes that can get dirty/wet. Bring protection from sun, rain, or cold based on weather. There are mosquitoes and other insects, so bring insect repellent and allergy medicine as needed. And don’t forget your water bottle!

BioBlitz Scavenger Hunt - It may sound counter-intuitive, but mobile technology can help us get our students out into nature. Using the camera on our smart phones or iPads, we will take a hike around the Hiram College campus and capture some images of organisms. Along the way, we will discuss the idea of a bioblitz or nature-based scavenger hunt and how Web-based organizations, data sets and guides can help student learn about the nature around them.

BioBlitz Scavenger Hunt - It may sound counter-intuitive, but mobile technology can help us get our students out into nature. Using the camera on our smart phones or iPads, we will take a hike around the Hiram College campus and capture some images of organisms. Along the way, we will discuss the idea of a bioblitz or nature-based scavenger hunt and how Web-based organizations, data sets and guides can help student learn about the nature around them.

We’ll explore Jim Paul Gee’s framework for what good game design has to teach us about learning and then team-up and trek out to cure a global epidemic. This cooperative learning model teaches systems thinking and problem solving. We’ll take the discussion a step further to look at implementing a variety of games and models to meet learning outcomes across content and age levels.

Join us for low impact exercise and a conversation about the impact of tech on physical activity. We will examine recent literature that has examined how technology can impact our physical activity behaviors. More specifically, we will discuss how common cell phone functions (e.g., talking, texting, listening to music) can influence exercise intensity, enjoyment (i.e., liking), and balance. Finally, we will also discuss how the iPad can influence children's engagement in a variety of age-appropriate physical and sedentary activities.

Group B. Hiking: What Nature is Around You - Exploring Ecosystems at Hiram College’s Field Station

The James H. Barrow Field Station covers 550 acres of land that include several different ecosystems, such as old-growth beech-maple forest, young forests, a cold-water stream, ponds, wetlands, and old fields of varying ages. We will hike trails to explore these ecosystems and experience what nature we come across during our trek. Feel free to take pictures so you can share what you saw! The hike is about 2.5 to 5 miles, depending on weather, ground conditions, and our disposition. Come dressed for being outdoors in nature. The trails include hilly terrain and can be wet and slippery. So wear appropriate hiking shoes that can get dirty/wet. Bring protection from sun, rain, or cold based on weather. There are mosquitoes and other insects, so bring insect repellent and allergy medicine as needed. And don’t forget your water bottle!

The history of technology in schools is fraught with disappointments. At the same time, the evolution of educational theories and program has been equally ineffective. Considering the huge cost for technology innovations, it is no wonder many good schools have opted out of technology dependence. Likewise, student retention, test scores, and degree completion rates have failed to rise in the throes of promising new theories and programs.

Join us for a discussion at the crossroads of reflective practices, project-based learning, and experiential treks. We'll merge a "depth of reflection model" with Digital Promise's best practices in high-impact learning to create framework for implementing and innovating in this space. We'll showcase a few exemplars from courses across content areas at Hiram, such as podcasts, "thought-casting" vlogs, and journaling. We'll develop the idea of "multi-modal reflection" and how it can compliment digital media PBL. We'll close with an invitation to extend the party with a PLN and possible Northwoods Fieldstation retreat this summer.

Alan November Alan November is an international leader in education technology. He began his career as an oceanography teacher and dorm counselor at an island reform school for boys in Boston Harbor. He has been director of an alternative high school, computer coordinator, technology consultant and university lecturer. He has helped schools, governments and industry leaders improve the quality of education through technology. Alan was named one of the nation's fifteen most influential thinkers of the decade by Classroom Computer Learning Magazine. In 2001, he was listed one of eight educators to provide leadership into the future by the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse. His writing includes numerous articles and the best-selling book, Empowering Students with Technology. Alan was co-founder of the Stanford Institute for Educational Leadership Through Technology and is most proud of being selected as one of the original five national Christa McAuliffe Educators. Kathleen Heinlen, Ph.D Kathleen Heinlen, Ph.D. Assistant Professor, Counseling Dr. Kathleen Heinlen has served as an Assistant Professor of Counseling at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) since 2010. Dr. Heinlen is a licensed psychologist and a licensed professional clinical counselor with supervision endorsement. She has presented at state and national conferences on the topics of Traumatic Brain Injury, Veterans, Caregiver Issues, Grief, Attachment Disorder, Clinical Ethics, Telepsychology, Trauma, Mindfulness, Suicide and Self-Care. Lawrence A. Tomei Lawrence A. Tomei is Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and a professor in education at Robert Morris University. Born in Akron, Ohio, he earned a BSBA from the University of Akron (1972) and entered the US Air Force, serving until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1994. Dr. Tomei completed his MPA and MEd at the University of Oklahoma (1975, 1978) and EdD from USC (1983). His articles and books on instructional technology include: Professional Portfolios for Teachers (1999), Teaching Digitally: Integrating Technology Into the Classroom (2001), Technology Facade (2002), Challenges of Teaching with Technology Across the Curriculum (2003), and Taxonomy for the Technology Domain (2005).
