Thanksgiving Guide WHAT IS THANKSGIVING?
Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the
US, celebrating the traditions of the first
Pilgrims and Puritans at Plymouth,
Massachusetts who are alleged to have
been “thankful” for a good harvest in 1621.
Some weird factsThere are 3 towns named Turkey in the
US;
The world's largest manmade turkey
weighs over 5,000 pounds;
The night before Thanksgiving is the
single biggest day for bar sales in the
US;
The first meal on the moon was packets
of roasted turkey;
The original Macy's Day Parade used
live animals from the Central Park Zoo;
There are about 250 million turkeys
raised annually in the US;
The average person consumes 4500
calories on Thanksgiving dayenough to
gain 1.3 pounds;
Seafood and venison were most likely
served at the first Thanksgiving and not
turkey.
Did you know that turkey wasn't even served at the first Thanksgiving — and thatthe Pilgrims didn’t use forks because they weren’t invented yet?
The celebration of
Thanksgiving will be
incomplete without
the legendary Turkey.
Cornucopia, a
horn shaped
container, is
filled with
abundance
of harvest.
One of the most popular
symbols of Thanksgiving is
the Corn. Some Americans
considered blue and white
corn to be sacred.
Famously known as one
of the 'Three sisters',
beans are a part of
thanksgiving feast.
The cranberry sauce was
and is still used as a
companion of turkey
during Thanksgiving dinner.
Sweet potato casserole
with marshmallows
is must eat for
Thanksgiving. They're
iconic! Delicious? That's
open for debate.
One of the most popular annual attractions in NYC, the
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has been a New
York City tradition since 1924. It features more
than 1,500 dancers and cheerleaders, close to
1,000 clowns, almost 30 parade floats, a dozen
marching bands, and nearly 8,000 participants.
British up your Thanksgiving dinner!
Many Brits aren’t wedded to
turkey and will serve a different
bird or something like Beef
Wellington instead.
What probably won’t be
served are candied yams,
green bean casserole or
anything else associated
with dessert.
Golden Treacle Tart with
Bourbon ice cream and
Pumpkin trifle with brandy are
the perfect choices.
If anyone’s around in the
morning, a selection of
bucks fizz (a.k.a. mimosa)
and sherry would be great.
A lovely idea for
Thanksgiving evening
(particularly if it’s cold and
blustery outside) is mulled
wine.
If you’re sick of the smell
and sight of
pumpkins, try Chocolate
Bread Pudding with
Bourbon sauce instead.
Have a great day whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or notand remember that there is always something to be thankgul for
with no need to do it on some special day!
