Thanksgiving

Tis the season to remember the deceased and to give thanks for the past, present, and future. I always look forward to the feeling that this time of the year gives me. Throughout the months of October- December, I often reflect over how blessed I am to be in the position that I’m in today. I will soon graduate from an accredited four-year private university, and I feel like my possibilities going forth are endless. I have grown much over the last four years and I attribute that to the limitless opportunities and tools Baker University has provided along the way. I truly believe that no other University can treat their students as well as Baker has treated me. Not only did I get the opportunity to visit 9 different countries during my study abroad experience, but I discovered personal strengths and weaknesses, which have already helped me in my personal and professional lives. Myra Glover was one of the first faculty members that helped me guide my way through Baker. Not only am I thankful for the opportunities attending Baker University has provided but I am thankful to have the opportunity to attend a reputable four year university.

My parents set me up for a bright future before I even had a chance to realize what was going on. They both work very hard in order to ensure that I live a safe and comfortable life. I especially want to thank my mother, Diosilda Wright, who has not stopped working since she was a preteen growing up in Colombia. Her hard work and accomplishments in life have given me the motivation I need to drive my development while attending Baker. I am so happy to be where I am today, thanks to Baker University and my family. Happy Hallow-thanks-mas!

España: Un lugar inolvidable Por Laura Bynum El enero pasado tuve la increíble oportunidad

de estudiar en Salamanca por tres semanas. Mien-

tras que vivía allí, mi amiga Allie Packard y yo nos

quedamos con nuestra "mamá", su hijo y su gatita

en su piso. Estudiamos en Hispano Continental,

una escuela creada específicamente para enseñar

español a estudiantes extranjeros. En mi clase,

además de tres estudiantes de los Estados Unidos,

había estudiantes de Corea del Sur, Japón, Ecua-

dor, Colombia y Francia. Fue muy maravilloso

que, a pesar de que no todos podían hablar en

inglés, pudiéramos comunicarnos en español.

En mi tiempo libre fuera de la clase, caminé

por casi todas las partes de la ciudad y aprendí

tanto como pude sobre su historia y su cultura.

Visité la Catedral Vieja, la Catedral Nueva, el

Puente Romano sobre el río Tormes y la Casa Lis,

un museo de arte. El lugar favorito que visité fue

la Plaza Mayor, o la plaza principal, que puede ser

considerada como el corazón de la ciudad. Incluye

numerosos cafeterías y restaurantes, así como el

palacio municipal. Es el mejor lugar para experi-

mentar la cultura de la ciudad porque muchos ti-

pos diferentes de personas vienen aquí para ha-

blar, reír, descansar y disfrutar lo que Salamanca

tiene que ofrecer. La atmósfera de la Plaza Mayor

durante el día es diferente que durante la noche.

Durante el día, está llena de actividad como

reuniones, almuerzos, paseos, etc. En la noche, la

Plaza Mayor tiene un ambiente tranquilo y sereno,

y es un lugar para contemplar la vida. Sin duda es

una de las características de Salamanca que extra-

ño más que nada. Un fin de semana viajé a Sego-

via, una ciudad muy antigua y fascinante. El acue-

ducto romano que está allí es increíble porque los

romanos lo construyeron sin mortero. El acueduc-

to abastecía la ciudad con agua durante miles de

años. Ahora es una riqueza histórica y cultural de

la ciudad. Durante un recorrido de la ciudad, visité

la catedral de Segovia, la última catedral gótica

construida en el país. Su nombre oficial es la Cate-

dral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. En este

mismo recorrido, visité el Alcázar de Segovia, el

castillo situado en la parte antigua de la ciudad.

Originalmente fue construido como una fortaleza,

pero también ha servido como un palacio, una

prisión, y una academia militar. Actualmente es un

museo, incluyendo la sala del trono en la que la

reina Isabel y el rey Fernando hicieron muchas

decisiones reales durante su residencia allí en el

siglo XV.

Durante otro viaje, visité las montañas cerca de Salaman-ca, incluyendo una de las montañas más altas de la provincia de Salamanca, la Peña de Francia. El último fin de semana del viaje, viajé a Madrid, la capital de España. Allí, visité mu-chas diferentes atracciones culturales y artísticas, como el Museo del Prado, el Parque del Buen Retiro y el Templo de Debod. El Museo del Prado es un maravilloso museo de arte donde uno puede ver las obras de famosos artistas espa-ñoles como El Greco, Francisco de Goya y Diego Veláz-quez, incluyendo su obra más famosa, Las meninas, así como las de otros artistas europeos, como Hieronymous Bosch y Caravaggio. En el Museo Reina Sofía, vi las obras de Salva-dor Dalí y Pablo Picasso, incluyendo su famoso Guernica. El

último lugar que visité en Madrid fue la Catedral de Santa María la Real de la Almudena. Este fue mi lugar favorito de toda Madrid - esta catedral católica es muy decorada y orna-mentada con diseños de colores brillantes. Fue mi lugar fa-vorito en Madrid debido a su belleza y tranquilidad. Mis experiencias en España son inestimables e inolvida-bles. Aprendí y experimenté mucho y tomé muchas fotos para recordar mis experiencias. A través de esta oportunidad educacional, descubrí que España, con su historia compleja, diversa e interesante, es un país maravilloso en que podía practicar mi español, conocer a otras personas internaciona-les y experimentar una parte del mundo muy fascinante.

Spain: An Unforgettable Place

By Laura Bynum This past January, I had the incredible opportunity to

study in Salamanca for three weeks. While I was living

there, my friend Allie Packard and I stayed with our host

mother, her son, and their cat in their apartment. We

studied at Hispano Continental, a school created specifically

to teach Spanish to foreign students. In my class, in addition

to three students from the United States, there were stu-

dents from South Korea, Japan, Ecuador, Colombia, and

France. It was very wonderful that even though not

everyone could speak English, we could communicate with

each other in Spanish.

In my free time outside of class, I walked all around the

city and learned as much as I could about its history and

culture. I visited the Old Cathedral, the New Cathedral, the

Roman Bridge over the Tormes River, and La Casa Lis, an

art museum. My favorite place that I visited was the Plaza

Mayor, or the main square, which can be considered the

heart of the city. It includes numerous cafés and restaurants,

as well as the city hall. It’s the best place to experience the

culture of the city because many different types of people

comes there to talk, laugh, rest, and enjoy what Salamanca

has to offer. The atmosphere of the Plaza Mayor during the

day is different than during the night. During the day, it’s

full of activity such as meetings, lunches, walks, etc. At

night, it has a tranquil and serene atmosphere, and is an

excellent place to contemplate life. Without a doubt it is one

of the places in Salamanca that I miss more than anything.

One weekend I visited Segovia, an ancient and fascinat-

ing city. The roman aqueduct there is incredible because the

Romans constructed it without mortar. The aqueduct

supplied the city with water for thousands of years. Now it

is a historic and cultural treasure of the city. Durante a tour

of Segovia, I visited the cathedral of the city, the last gothic

cathedral constructed in Spain. Its official name is the

Catedral de Nuestra Senora de la Asunción. On this same

tour, I visited the Alcázar de Segovia, the castle situated on

a hill in the old part of the city. Originally it was constructed

as a fortress, but also has served as a palace, prison, and

military academy. Now it is a museum, including the royal

throne in which Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand made

many royal decisions during their residency there in the 15th

century.

During another trip, I visited the mountains near Sala-

manca, including one of the tallest mountains in the prov-

ince of Salamanca, la Peña de Francia. The last weekend of

my stay in Spain, I visited Madrid, the country’s capital.

There, I visited many different cultural and artistic attrac-

tions, such as the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia Museum,

Buen Retiro Park, and the Temple of Debod. The Prado

Museum is a marvelous art museum where you can see the

works of famous Spanish artists like El Greco, Francisco de

Goya, and Diego Velázquez, including his most famous

work, “Las meninas”, as well as the work of other European

artists such as Hieronymous Bosch and Caravaggio. In the

Reina Sofia Museum, I saw the works of Salvador Dalí and

Pablo Picasso, including his famous “Guernica”. The last

place I visited in Madrid was the Catedral de Santa María la

Real de la Almudena. This was my favorite place in all of

Madrid. This catholic cathedral is very decorated and orna-

mental with brightly colored designs. It was my favorite

place in Madrid due to its beauty and tranquility.

Es la temporada de recordar a los muertos y dar gracias al pasado, el presente y el futuro. Entre estos meses de octubre- diciembre nosotros celebramos el Día de los muertos, el Día de dar gracias y la Navidad. Esta época siempre me da un sentimiento especial. Me hace pensar mucho en las bendiciones que he tenido en esta vida. Estoy en una posición en que veo oportunidades interminables. Yo me voy a graduar de una universidad acreditada, que me ha enseñado a tener confianza en todas mis posibilidades. Yo he crecido mucho en estos últimos cuatro años; yo atribuyo esto a las oportunidades, instrumentos y apoyo de parte de la Universidad de Baker. Yo estoy convencida que ninguna otra universidad trata a sus estudiantes tan bien como Baker me ha tratado a mí. Yo tuve la oportunidad de estudiar en Inglaterra y en este viaje conocí a nueve países. En mi tiempo en el extranjero, yo descubrí algunas fuerzas y debilidades, las cuales ya me han mejorado en mi vida

personal y profesional. Myra Glover fue una de las empleadas de Baker que conocí primero. Myra me ayudó a navegar más que mi vida en la universidad. Baker me ha presentado con muchas oportunidades pero aún estoy agradecía de tener la oportunidad de estudiar en una universidad tan acreditada como la Universidad de Baker. Mis padres me alistaron para un futuro brillante antes de que me diera cuenta de lo que estaba pasando. Mis padres, Stan y Diosilda Wright, han trabajado muy duro para asegurarse que yo viva una vida segura y cómoda. Quiero agradecer especialmente a mi madre, Diosa, quien no ha parado de trabajar para los demás a lo largo de su vida. Su trabajo penoso, su determinación y sus éxitos me han dado la motivación que yo necesitaba muchas veces para empujarme más en mi desarrollo aquí en la Universidad de Baker. Yo estoy bien contenta de estar en esta posición donde estoy hoy, gracias a los amigos que me rodean en la Universidad de Baker y a mi familia. ¡¡Feliz Hallo-thanks-mas!!

My experiences in Spain are inestimable and unforgettable. I learned and experienced a lot and took many photos to remember my experi-ences. Through this educational opportunity, I discovered that Spain, with its complex, diverse, and interesting history, is a marvelous country in which I was able to practice my Spanish, meet new international people, and experience a very fascinating part of the world.
