Introduction

Taking a shower… eating a tasty piece of coffee cake… popping a pill for indigestion… drinking a glass of water… and even enjoying a healthy plate of garden greens .

These simple, everyday activities all have something in common: Each one of them is likely to contain toxins that are known to be bad news for your brain .

And these don’t fall under the category of “just a little won’t hurt,” either . Because they add up, day in and day out .

As a physician who specializes in integrative and nutritional med-icine, I’ve spent my career helping patients uncover the true causes of many of the diseases and conditions that are now considered the “norm” in our modern-day lives .

I’m here to tell you that the explosion of dementia that we’re now seeing in the U .S . is, in large part, triggered by exposure to many of the everyday things that you probably don’t give a second thought to .

But they ARE harming you—slowly but surely—especially where your brain is concerned .

Page 6: that - Is your shampoo giving you Alzheimer's? · Get off the “Fluoride Express”: ... glass, stainless steel, or well-seasoned cast iron pans for ... While you can’t walk around

The first thing I tell my patients who are worried about Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia, is this: Start reading those ingredient la-bels!

You probably have some favorite brands that you’ve been buying forever—and that’s where you’re going to have to start taking a good hard look at the ingredients listed on those labels .

And after doing that, if you get the urge to start saying, “double, double, toil and trouble,” it’s quite likely not something you want to be using!

If you’re able to kick EVEN ONE of these brain toxins out of your life for good, you’ll have done more to help yourself steer clear of dementia and keep your memories intact than you could have ever imagined!

And you can start determining your toxic load by asking yourself the following five essential questions .

Page 7: that - Is your shampoo giving you Alzheimer's? · Get off the “Fluoride Express”: ... glass, stainless steel, or well-seasoned cast iron pans for ... While you can’t walk around

How heavy are your metals?

I’m sure you’ve heard bits and pieces about the frightening con-nection between aluminum and Alzheimer’s disease, which was first reported over 20 years ago .

But recently, some research has come out proving that we can no longer afford to ignore the evidence of a link between that mind-rob-bing disease and this toxic metal .

First came a study published in the French journal Morphologie that revealed how your vulnerability to the neurotoxic effects of alumi-num exposure is based on individual genetics .1

And that’s something we can’t change no matter how hard we try!

Everyday activities like cooking in aluminum pots… taking antac-ids… and eating packaged foods might actually be enough to push you over the Alzheimer’s cliff .

Back in 2014, scientists at Keele University in the UK found what they called a “direct link” between levels of aluminum in the brain and

Alzheimer’s disease .

The research involved a man in Great Britain who died at 66 years old with advanced Alzheimer’s . And when the scientists looked at sam-ples of his brain tissue under the microscope, they found a LOT of aluminum .

But while this man was exposed to aluminum where he worked, that’s certainly not the ONLY way you may be absorbing a whopping dose of this brain toxin on a daily basis .

If you want to begin purging as much of this heavy metal as you can from your life, your first three targets are in your bathroom:

1 . Ditch the heartburn meds: Many of those benign-looking, over-the-counter antacids are LOADED with aluminum . For example, Gelusil tablets contain 200 mg of aluminum hydrox-ide—and that’s in each tablet! Di-gel maximum strength ant-acid has a whopping 400 mg of aluminum hydroxide in every teaspoon .

2 . Toss the antiperspirants: Unbelievably, the FDA requires that antiperspirants contain aluminum . And on top of what your body may be absorbing, experts are now saying that one of the best ways to DETOX the aluminum already in your system is by sweating . (More on that a little later .) So, antiperspirants have two big strikes against them .

3 . Get off the “Fluoride Express”: If your municipal water sup-ply is fluoridated, that’s a double whammy . Fluoride can latch onto aluminum and take it right to your brain . Invest in a re-verse osmosis water filtration system to get this unnecessary, toxic chemical out . Also, toss any fluoridated toothpaste and mouthwash . Non-fluoride versions are now very easy to find .

But the bathroom isn’t the only place you can find sources of alu-

minum to ditch . Next stop: the three culprits in your kitchen .

1 . Pot luck: Replace all those aluminum pots and pans . Look for glass, stainless steel, or well-seasoned cast iron pans for stick-free cooking .

2 . Foiling for trouble: Stop wrapping and grilling in all that alumi-num foil . Studies have found the metal can leach directly into your food this way—and that’s especially true of acidic foods such as tomato products .

3 . Baking better: Aluminum is also added to many foods, such as baked goods and even processed cheese . Watch out for “sodium aluminum phosphate” and “sodium aluminum sulfate .” And if you enjoy baking your own homemade goodies, make sure to buy some aluminum-free baking powder .

Certainly, we can’t avoid all of our exposure to aluminum—it’s in the soil, air, and water as well .

But what we can do is reduce it as much as humanly possible—es-pecially since there are plenty of non-aluminum options that are easy to find .

What are the dirty little secrets of your dust?

Anyone who suffers from allergies knows how annoying a dusty environment can be, but the big story where dust is concerned is in all the toxic chemicals it typically contains .

There’s a lot going on in those minuscule specks, including some toxins that can steal your precious memories .

And once again, it comes down to heavy metals .

Cars, power plants, and factories can spew tiny particles of magne-tite out into the air, where they can go right up your nose .1 The toxin has actually been found INSIDE human brain tissue—and once that heavy metal gets in there, it can wreak havoc on your mind .

As well, there’s another type of toxin that’s been detected in dust samples taken all across the U .S . And this one isn’t coming from pol-luted air outside, either—it’s already right inside our homes .

I’m talking about flame retardants .

One type, called PBDE, is used in building materials, carpet pad-ding, upholstered furniture, and foam cushions, to name just a few .

Over a decade ago, Swedish researchers discovered that exposure to these substances caused adult mice to have problems with both remem-bering AND learning .2

Baby mice had developmental problems and changes to their be-havior after exposure to PBDEs, which are readily absorbed in body fat .

One study found that PBDE can nearly TRIPLE your risk of Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), a terminal neurodegenerative disease with no known cure .3

While you can’t walk around with a dust mask on all the time, you can do the next best thing—and that’s make your castle as unpolluted as possible .

A good place to start is by following these three tips:

1 . Buy one (or more) air purifiers with HEPA filters . These are portable units that can remove micro-contaminants from your home’s air . The larger the room, the bigger the unit you’ll need .

2 . If your vacuum doesn’t have a HEPA filter, it’s time for a new one . Otherwise all you’ll be doing is picking up dust and dirt off the ground and blowing these toxins right back out in your air .

3 . Never dry dust! Either use a damp rag or a duster sprayed with a non-toxic cleaner .

Is your drinking water poisoning you?

I’m sure by now you’ve heard about what is happening in Flint, Michigan, where residents were found to be drinking water contami-nated with high levels of lead for several years .

And lead is an especially damaging brain toxin—for adults as well as kids .

In grown-ups, lead can reduce cognitive function, cause trouble hearing, and even change your behavior . Very high levels in your body can cause convulsions and lead to death .

And as I’ve said, it isn’t a question of if you have lead in your body, but how much . In years past, we played with toys that had lead paint on them, pumped leaded gasoline into our cars, and lived in homes with lead paint and pipes .

But despite the fact that everyone, and I mean everyone, knows lead is bad news for the brain, it can still be found in the drinking water of communities all over the country . That’s because many locales still have lead lines that can leach this toxic metal right into your tap water .

Lead can also find its way into your coffee or tea through your own

Page 13: that - Is your shampoo giving you Alzheimer's? · Get off the “Fluoride Express”: ... glass, stainless steel, or well-seasoned cast iron pans for ... While you can’t walk around

13

plumbing fixtures . Older home can have faucets, pipes, and soldering that contains lead . But newer homes can also have supposed “lead-free” fixtures that can contain close to 10 percent of this brain-damaging heavy metal .

Getting the Lead Out

Obviously, lead is a danger we mistakenly thought was in the rear-view mirror . But now it’s clear that we all have to be on guard about this risk—for ourselves and, of course, our kids and grandkids .

The first thing you need to do is have your water tested . You can do that by either hiring a private company or calling your local utility and asking for a copy of its most recent test for contaminants, which it is required to conduct under federal law .

Next, there are three precautions you need to take to keep as much lead as possible out of your daily diet:

1 . Filter your water at the “point of entry” or at the tap, called the “point of use .” If your water is also fluoridated, that same reverse osmosis filter that can remove the fluoride should also be able to remove lead .

2 . Run your water for a few minutes in the morning to purge what’s been sitting in your pipes for those overnight hours .

3 . Never cook in or drink hot water from the tap . Warm and hot tap water will contain much higher amounts of lead—and boil-ing won’t remove it .

And the best way to test for the presence of heavy metals in your body is with a chelation test .

At the Rothfeld Center for Integrative Medicine, I often use chela-tion therapy with my patients who are suffering from high heavy metal toxicity, since the intravenous process can bind to those metals and flush them out .

Could you be spraying your memories away?

Shockingly, not only are people developing dementia at younger and younger ages (especially in the U .S .)—but for those over 75, the death rates for these kinds of brain diseases have nearly doubled .

That’s according to a study published in BMJ that tracked neuro-logical diseases in 21 countries from 1989 to 2010 .1

And you can blame this scary trend, in part, on dandelions .

What in the world do dandelions have to do with dementia?

Well, turns out that it’s not those so-called weeds growing in our yards that we need to be worried about… it’s all the poisons we use to KILL them .

And the same goes for lots of other pesticides and herbicides (a .k .a . “weed killers”) that drench a lot of the food we eat .

If you compare pesticide use in the U .S . during the last 50 years alongside these rising cases of dementia, both lines go off the chart—SIDE BY SIDE!

15

Toxins, such as arsenic, in these products can set the stage for de-mentia, including Alzheimer’s .

And in a study done by researchers at Rutgers University, evidence of exposure to the now-banned pesticide DDT was found in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s at four times the amount found in those without the disease .2

Despite the fact that DDT levels in people have dropped during the past 30 years, it can still be found in the blood of up to 80 percent of people tested, according to the CDC . Part of the reason is because some countries STILL allow the use of this pesticide!

So, your imported fruits, veggies, and grains may have been treated with DDT . There’s really no way to know for sure when you buy con-ventionally grown produce (which is why it’s so important to detox—more on that in a minute) .

Food to die for, not from!

But DDT is far from the only dangerous chemical used on our food . Many of these killer chemicals have dangerous levels of heavy metals in them .

And the sad part is that some of the healthiest fruits and vegetables you can find are also the ones with the biggest pesticide residues .

Add to that the genetic “quirk” that can make you more susceptible to these toxins, and it’s a recipe for disaster .

So, to knock down the levels of the toxins you and your family consume, be sure to take these three steps:

1 . Look for organically grown produce whenever possible . Studies have found that organic fruits and vegetable are also higher in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants—so it’s a real win-win .

16

2 . Watch out for the most pesticide-laden foods out there . This year, that means strawberries and spinach . Some spinach sam-ples were found to contain as many as 16 different pesticides on them! Make it a point to go organic—especially where these two crops are concerned .3

3 . Also buy organic when shopping for meat and chicken .

It’s not too difficult to steer clear of these poisons AND still have plenty of healthy foods to choose from .

17

Do you have one of these 4 toxic brands in your tub?

There’s one pesticide in particular that you may be exposing your-self to every time you step into the shower—because it’s found in some of the most popular shampoo brands out there .

See, there’s an industrial preservative that’s added to several of to-day’s top-selling shampoo brands as an antimicrobial agent . And that may sound like a good idea if you don’t want microbes crawling around on your head .

But this ingredient, called methylisothiazolinone (or MI), is so strong that it’s also used in fuel storage tanks, cooling systems, and paper mills to control the growth of bacteria!

And it has been found to cause neurological damage in the brain cells of rats, according to studies done by National Institutes of Health researchers .1

You might think that reducing your toxic load and exposure to tox-ins just applies to what you’re putting in your mouth… or breathing through your nose… but it’s just as important when it comes to what

you put on the OUTSIDE of your body, too .

While your skin does an amazing job of protecting you, it’s not exactly an impenetrable suit of armor .

In fact, many chemicals can find a way past it—and they get right into your body .

And if you wanted to pick two of the “best” locations to have some-thing easily absorbed into your body,2 they would be your forehead and your scalp .

Of course, you’d never KNOWINGLY rub something all over your head that had been found to be highly toxic to brain cells .

But the fact remains: LOTS of us do that every time we wash our hair .

It might even be in a bottle of whatever you’ve got in your shower stall or on your bathtub ledge right now .

And if you’ve used one of those shampoos today, this chemical could be sitting on your forehead… or maybe even on your scalp… working its way into your body RIGHT NOW .

Studies have found that even just “brief exposure” to this chemical is “highly toxic” to nerve cells (neurons) cultured in the laboratory,3 and yet you’ll find it Head & Shoulders—a shampoo brand so popular that in 2016, nearly 11 million Americans used it more than EIGHT TIMES A WEEK .4

And then there’s the MI-laden Suave, which up to 17 million Americans expose themselves to nearly every day of the week,5 making

it the second-leading U .S . shampoo brand last year .6

It doesn’t stop there, either . You can find MI in multiple Pantene-branded shampoo products that totaled over $85 million in U .S . sales last year .7

One brand, Clairol’s Herbal Essences, actually has the nerve to ad-vertise its MI-containing shampoo as doing “beautiful things for your hair and your head .”8

But what it may be doing to your brain isn’t so pretty .

3 Ways to Detox Your Way to a Healthier Brain!

There’s no doubt, it’s a toxic world out there .

We’re exposed to many of these health-wrecking poisons simply by just eating, drinking, breathing, and even BATHING .

But you can incorporate effective detox methods into your daily life by making a few simple changes . Here are my Top 3:

#1 The Spa Secret

A recent study out of Finland1 has discovered the link between sauna use and lowering your risk of dementia . (Remember how I told you that sweating is the best way to get aluminum out of your body?)

After reviewing the data from around 2,000 men who make use of a sauna every day or every other day, the researchers found they were a giant 66 percent less likely to develop dementia—including Alzheim-er’s—than those who only went once a week .

Now, before you ask, “This isn’t Finland, so where am I going to find a sauna?” check out a local spa or gym—you may be surprised .

1 http://nutritionandhealing.com/2017/01/12/saunas-slash-dementia-risk/

Page 22: that - Is your shampoo giving you Alzheimer's? · Get off the “Fluoride Express”: ... glass, stainless steel, or well-seasoned cast iron pans for ... While you can’t walk around

22

Also, small saunas are available to install in your home, and they’re typically sold where you’ll find hot tubs and Jacuzzis .

And yes, it’s safe, even if you’re older and have heart disease . Just don’t sauna alone, and make sure you don’t spend more than a few minutes sweating it out until you get used to it .

#2 Banish brain clutter!

In a perfect world, we would all fall asleep the minute our heads hit the pillow… and we’d wake refreshed and ready to take on the chal-lenges of the day .

So much for perfect, right?

But losing sleep is much more than just something that can make the best of us cranky the next day . It can also be disastrous for your health—and especially your brain .

That’s because sleep is one of the ways our body detoxes—and clears out a lot of brain clutter in the process . And by not getting enough sleep, your brain loses something very important called “plasticity .”2

To keep your brain (and your patience!) running smoothly, sleep is NOT something you can afford to skimp on . But NEVER use drugs to get your ZZZs .

Instead, try some sleepy-time tricks such as setting a regular bed-time routine, the same method you used to get the kids to bed at night when they were little! A warm bath and a cup of chamomile tea also can work wonders .

And turn off the TV, iPhone, tablet, and anything else that streams a bright light into your eyes at least an hour or more before bedtime . That can stop the flow of your natural levels of melatonin—the hor-mone that helps us to nod off into dreamland at night .

23

#3 Go Paleo!

As my patients and readers know, I’m a big fan of the Paleo diet .

Simply put, eating Paleo means you’re booting refined, processed and toxic foods out of your diet and filling your plate with high-quality protein from wild-caught fish and grass-fed beef, lots of fruits and veg-gies, and good fats from natural sources, such as coconut, avocado, and olive oils .

I could devote a whole book to the benefits of going Paleo, but I will tell you that what you eat can have a big impact on your health, longev-ity, and whether dementia, including Alzheimer’s, is in your cards .

Page 24: that - Is your shampoo giving you Alzheimer's? · Get off the “Fluoride Express”: ... glass, stainless steel, or well-seasoned cast iron pans for ... While you can’t walk around

24

Are they just “senior moments”... or something much worse?

Remember back in the day when your mind was as sharp as a steel trap?

Now, you can’t remember what you ate for breakfast . You have to feel if your toothbrush is wet to know if you’ve already brushed your teeth . You circle the parking lot endlessly parking lot because you can’t remember where you left your car .

The most frightening thing about memory loss is that we don’t know where it will stop . Are these just “senior moments,” or are they the first signs of dementia?

We’ve all been there—and there’s nothing more terrifying .

It’s no surprise that many seniors don’t tell their doctors about memory problems because they’re afraid— and because they want to avoid the stigma of memory loss . . .and dementia .

And even if it IS dementia, it’s important to recognize it early on . Even mild memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s can be improved by taking the right medications, socializing and engaging in activities, getting good rest, learning something new, and exercising regularly .

But you won’t know unless you talk to your doctor first .

Page 25: that - Is your shampoo giving you Alzheimer's? · Get off the “Fluoride Express”: ... glass, stainless steel, or well-seasoned cast iron pans for ... While you can’t walk around

25

There are things you should mention if you’ve noticed them in yourself . . .or a loved one:

• Signs of spatial memory loss, like losing your way or having difficulty with depth perception

• Worsening of mood, personality, or social skills, including social withdrawal

• Loss of independence

• Difficulty with tasks like managing finances and showing poor judgment with money

• Changes in eating and grooming habits

• Loneliness

• Slow gait

• Loss of smell

But even if you’re not currently showing any of these signs of Al-zheimer’s, you can’t assume you’ve dodged a bullet . Your brain…and a lifetime of memories…may be under attack right this moment, with-out your even knowing it .

Mainstream medicine often gets the diagnosis wrong, or recommends treatments that address the symptoms—not the cause . Your doctor may prescribe drugs that often do more harm than good, because not enough time is spent considering the best treatment plan for you as an individual .

When I diagnose Alzheimer’s, I spend as much time as possible with each of my patients, giving them the attention they need and de-serve by looking at how they’ve been affected in ways specific to them, unique to their particular circumstances .

Alzheimer’s can be as varied as each person afflicted by the disease, so if you want to treat it effectively, you’ve got to find an approach that makes sense for you .

Page 26: that - Is your shampoo giving you Alzheimer's? · Get off the “Fluoride Express”: ... glass, stainless steel, or well-seasoned cast iron pans for ... While you can’t walk around

26

That’s why I want to tell you about a simple, proven, 10-step pro-gram to reverse—and even cure—this frightening disease .

It’s an all-natural, at-home treatment known as the ICT Protocol, which reverses Alzheimer’s and dementia in 90 days .

ICT (Individualized Combination Therapy) is an individualized program tailored to suit each person . No more generic treatments . . .or one-size-fits all remedies that fail for most people .

Just a simple, homemade “cocktail” that can preserve your memo-ries and make Alzheimer’s disease a thing of the past .

And the ICT Protocol is specifically designed to target multiple causative factors in Alzheimer’s, instead of only focusing on one poten-tial factor . Patients undergo a number of clinical tests, including blood analysis, to determine what deficiencies and imbalances may exist .

Mainstream medicine will tell there isn’t anything you can do to erase your brain fog and prevent your memories from slipping away each day . But the patients who travel across the country to visit my clinic know differently .

If you want to do everything you can to protect your brain, there are proven therapies that can keep you mentally sharp and safeguard your precious memories .

Like a simple cocktail you can make at home that can literally change your life… or the life of someone you love .

And the sooner we get started, the better .
