A number of congregants asked if I could circulate my remarks offered on the morning of Shabbat Parshat Va-era (January 5). Below is a reconstruction of observations I made of the parasha. Some social critics suggest that the hysteria of our secular new year celebration stems from our need for distraction from the truth that another year has passed…and we are a year older. That unpleasant truth of aging is often handled by humor. For example, the clipping that reads: You know you’re getting older when… Everything hurts and what doesn’t hurt, doesn’t work Your little black book contains only names ending in “M.D.” You get winded playing chess You turn out the lights for economic reasons You sit in a rocking chair and can’t get it going Your knees buckle and your belt won’t Your back goes out more than you do You walk with your head held high, trying to get used to your bifocals You look forward to a full evening You don’t care where your wife goes, just so you don’t have to go along That’s why it is important to look at the insight about age which we find in today’s Torah reading, “And Moses was 80 years old, and Aaron was 83 when they spoke to Pharoah.” (Exodus 7:7) The commentator Ibn Ezra pointed out that Moses and Aaron supply the core of our revelation, other prophets only remind us of their essential teachings. At the age of 80 and 83 these two men were active and vital and alive. The message for us is clear. Age really is just a number. Our creativity, our spirit, and our contributions are limited only by our vision and by our desire to make a difference. May God bless us all with health, happiness and length of years.

My name is Ryan Josephson. I am the great grandson of David, Bessie, Harry, Minnie, Abraham, Blossom, Sarah and Isador. I am named after my paternal great grandfather Abraham. I do not know much about my great grandparents until I was assigned this project. All of my great grand-parents came from Russia at the turn of the century. My mother’s grandparents are from a vil-lage named Kiev. My dad’s are from Odessa. I was told how life was very difficult for Jews in Russia. They lived in small towns referred to as a shtetl (small village). They were considered outcasts and were not allowed to practice their religious beliefs freely. It was very hard for them to provide a good life for their families. My great grandparents, like most, thought America was a land of freedom and opportunity. Unfortunately with those freedoms came true obstacles. My great grandparents like most of the Jewish immigrants, spoke Yiddish. They not only needed to learn a new language, they needed to learn an entire new culture. They lived in New York with a variety of different immigrants. They learned to adjust to a new life free of persecution. They not only took their possessions from the old country, they brought their traditions. They sought out people that had the same traditions, and beliefs. They listened to Yiddish music, and attended the Jewish theater. The most important part of their lives was to worship freely. I suspect they must have been very frightened entering an entire new world. I recently visited Ellis Island it was very interesting. I thought how scared I would be leaving my home and starting a new life. My maternal great grandparents have a commemorative plaque with their names on it. I felt very proud to be part of this heritage. My family has passed on this culture, and traditions of being a proud Jewish young man. I plan on continuing this with my future family.

The remarkable thing about EBJC is the myriad of ways it offers congregants to connect with a Jewish core. Some congregants contribute to the fabric of the synagogue by reading Torah, helping to make the daily minyan, or coming to pray as a community on Shabbat. Other members support the synagogue by bringing beauty to the physical structure of the synagogue by improving landscaping, painting, or installing bulletin boards. Others have brought essential skills in finance, helped streamline billing, found cheaper suppliers, and installed money saving thermostats. Some members have brought their creative ideas to programming to enrich the educational or social lives of our youth and adults. Some support the educational programs by attending the Talmud class, the Rabbi's course, the 92nd St. Series or the upcoming Sol and Evelyn Sleppin Jewish Law Lectures. The list of the ways in which our members support EBJC is endless. These last months have witnessed a flowering of our community in terms of events of a cul-tural, educational, entertainment and spiritual nature. In recent memory there has never before been such a palpable commitment on such a wide and pervasive scale to be involved in a meaningful way to strengthen our sacred community. This renaissance is still growing and building! New ideas are being suggested every day and people are stepping forward to volunteer their concrete labor to making these ideas come to life. Leaders on our board are all actively involved in bringing new ideas to fruition and they are all eager to hear as yet unexpressed ideas that are just waiting to further enrich our con-gregation. Please keep the ideas coming! Please keep thinking about our community. Please keep bringing your ideas to the executive board so they can be processed and integrated into the systems that are already in place for the smooth functioning of the synagogue. We are blessed as a community with the lay leadership to keep progressing spiritually, intellectually and socially. We are grateful for the many people whose unstinting commitment of time and energy have made such a difference in our progress. We would like to list below these people who's hard work have made the two of us look so good by organizing and integrating so many projects. So put this list on your refrigerator and when you next have a great idea for EBJC, don't hide it away - make a phone call and see how your idea can grow into a useful and beautiful reality.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING

With all the self-help books available on book shelves today, this one really takes the cake. Imagine getting so far by merely reading a little book and being charming and, of course, being just the right amount of a con-artist. Well, for J. Pierrepont Finch, it certainly did work, but not for the EBJC Adult Theater Group. For us to succeed, there was lots of hard work, many hours and there no “How to” books for us to refer to. Then, why did we do it? It is because of the amazing people we meet and befriend, sharing in the creation of a production and basking in the glow of our success. I personally looked forward to every rehearsal, seeing all the progress and feeling the excitement build. It was truly a pleasure to have worked with such a talented, dedicated and fun loving group.

Special thanks to: Michael Pollak for the music and teaching the wonderful harmonies, Danielle Volyand for the precise dance and production numbers, Elliot Schaktman for designing our magnificent set, Elliot and all the volunteers for the hours spent in constructing and painting the set, Karen Kushner and her committee for the fabulous costumes, Melissa and Shira Rosen for the program design, layout and photos, Jessica Mandell for stage and prop management, Marc Fertik for printing and putting together the programs, Judy & Jack Steinweis for the use of their home for the cast party, All the people who brought in ads for the program, All the volunteers (including many teens) who came out and helped in various capacities, My husband David and to Gail and Stanley Rubin for their support, The audiences who came and supported the production.

Thank you all. Bobbi Blumenthal

The greatest joy to a Jewish parent is to schep nachas from the kinder. And for a Jewish community the greatest joy is to schep nachas from our communal children. Have you noticed how many of the children educated in our Hebrew School have gone on to assume leadership roles in education and communal affairs for the larger Jewish community? It is a clear reflection on the quality of the education we offer, and of the values of our community that these children have gone on to become so dedicated to our people. (Congrats also to the actual parents!) This list is not a complete one - alas I don't know every child of our community. But please feel free to e-mail me with any names I have missed. [email protected] For some families commitment to the Jewish community appears to be genetic - Raymond and Adela Sasson have three kids with this trait. Joanna works for HIAS, on resettling Jewish Immigrants to Canada. Nadine is director of fund raising at Anshe Emeth Day School in Chicago. Leslie is a special education teacher at Manhattan Jewish Day School. Barbara and Dov Pollak also have three kids dedicated to the Jewish community. Yossi received his smichah from Yeshivat Chovevei Torah and is now the rabbi at the historic Stanton St. Shul on the Lower East Side. Aviva previously taught in Kushner Yeshiva and is now running a literacy program at Gan Yeladim at the Teaneck Jewish Center and at Yeshivat Noam. Oren, currently on Nativ, USY's one year program in Israel, has just finished training as an EMT and is about to start working with Magen David Adom. Howie and Amy Cohen have two children working for the Jewish community. Aylah is Missions Manager at United Jewish Communities in New York. Yishai is program coordinator at Jewish Education Resources of New York (Albany). In his spare time Yishai is a part time teacher of Hebrew and Bible at Hebrew Academy in Albany. Joel and Marilyn Littman's sons, Eric and Owen both taught Hebrew School as a side line during col-lege. Ellie Yollin Bauman is director of a Jewish Day School in Toronto. Right here at EBJC, Shira Rivlin is the Kadima advisor and the Junior Congregation Leader for the four year olds. Jessica Steinberg is our USY advisor. Matt Alpert coordinates Torah reading. And of course our ultimate success story is Stuart Teicher, a child of our own synagogue who grew up to lead our congrega-tion as president, and to educate his own children here. We are looking forward to a third generation Tei-cher EBJC president - there are certainly many little Teichers to choose from. On the current college front, Eliza Gases teaches Hebrew School and is very active at the Hillel at the University of Hartford and Sheri Rosenberg is a Hillel director in Wisconsin. Tobey Lass is very active in Jewish life at Binghamton University and brought to fruition one of the most creative of tzedaka projects there with a unique Chanukah celebration called "You Can Light Up a Life" in which a menorah was built of $1800 worth of donated cans of food. The “canned“ Menorah was lighted for Chanukah and then disassembled so the cans could be given to CHOW, a local food bank. Inter-viewed by the local paper, Tobey, co-chair of the event said " One of the deeds we do on Chanukah is to light the menorah, but here we are also lighting up individual's lives, by collecting money to buy cans to donate to CHOW." Great idea Tobey - come home and teach us how to do it next Chanukah at EBJC!

The Golden Gavel Award

Golden Gavel Presentation to Sy Silverstein on January 26th. The award this morning is one for lifetime achievement. Sy Silverstein has worked tirelessly on behalf of EBJC for the past half century, and is one of the 8 remaining members from the first organizational meeting at the Amvets hall 50 years ago. The list of what he has worked on at EBJC is quite comprehensive, including being current chair of the consti-tution committee and a member of that committee for 20 years. He has also served as historian; he has done hospital visitation; he was chair of the following committees: house, membership, president's council, and ways and means. He has been a member long range planning, dues structure, nominating, programming, representa-tive to United Synagogue, Secretary of United Synagogue Northern NJ region, and High Holiday usher. He is our oldest living president. But what is most remarkable about Sy Silverstein is not the extensive list of his accomplishments, but the way in which he has served as a role model to all of us by being a person of good manners, good sense and common decency. He is a gentle peacemaker who leads by example and has exemplified at board meetings how to behave with dignity and kindness, but still get one's point across. He practices a lesson he says he learned from the great debater, Mel Rosenhack - that it is important to disagree, agreeably. To keep board meetings running smoothly, efficiently and peacefully, Sy uses what some might call a precise focus on the constitution, and others might prefer to call an obsessive preoccupation with constitutional detail. For being the steadfast defender of the EBJC constitution and for keeping all of us on the straight and narrow, we present Sy with the Golden Gavel Award. In addition, in celebration of Tu B'Shevat Shabbat we also present Sy with 3 trees planted in Israel in his honor.

Thank you for all you have done for EBJC. Mazel Tov.

OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME! Have you always wanted to be a hero but didn't know where to start? Have you always dreamed of the gratification of serving your community but weren't sure you had the know how? Here is your chance to learn how to be a leader. EBJC needs more leaders and we are willing to train! Starting immediately we are offering an "internship" program to congregants interested in obtaining leadership and management skills. Let us know in what way you would like to serve our community and we will match you with someone already accomplished in those skills, who will teach you everything they know. You will develop the skills and know how to take on the important and meaningful tasks of helping to run our synagogue. You choose the job area and the level of difficulty that matches your needs and we will find you a men-tor. Want to learn how to plan a Friday night dinner for 150 people - no problem! Want to learn how to manage a small fund raising project - no problem! Want to learn how to be co-president for a large, dy-namic, engaged congregation - no problem! We will start you off small, or start you off big, according to what you are looking for. No pressure - take as long as you like to complete your training - we will not set you off on your own until you feel entirely comfortable with your new skills. Satisfaction guaranteed. Don't delay. Immediate openings. Contact Cathy Mermelstein, [email protected]

Dear EBJC Member,

Our Kadima Youth Group has been awarded the opportunity to host the 8th grade Shabbaton

sure that they get to the Synagogue and return back to the host home on Friday night and Saturday. All food is provided for the participants at the East Brunswick Jewish Center so

that host families are not responsible in any way to provide food. Hopefully you will be able to volunteer to be a host family. If you are able to help out please
