Area Committee on Ministry Report to the Area Assembly

May 2,2015

The main purpose of this committee (formerly knownas the Committee for Clergy Nurture andCertification) is to oversee the commissioned ministry process for the Area. The ACOM is scheduled to

meet four times a year to interview and offer support for current and potential commissioned ministers.

Each commissioned minister and candidate attends once a year to share information about his/herwork. Commissions are granted for one year, for ministry in a specific area. All commissions are

sponsored by congregations, yet the actual ministry may occur at another place. In addition to these

interviews, Commissioned Ministers have classes and training throughout the year to enhance their

skills. Candidates for Ordination work directly with the Regional Committee on Ministry and sometimescome to the ACOM for practice or "mock" interviews.

Trinity Brazos Area Youth Minister ReportChristy Drechsel

May 2, 2015

The summer camping season is upon us. Youth Ministers are running around gettingeverything ready for the summer - camps, mission trips, youth activities, and dreaming offinding some rest somewhere. Iam happy to announce that Family Camp I has already beencompletely filled with participants. There is a second Family Camp later in August if some of ourfamilies are still interested. Adventure Camp, a new camp this summer, is also almost filled. Itmay be filled by the time we have this meeting. There are only 2 spots still available.

All of that to say, our camping program is going great. It's not just a place for the youthto go during the summer. It is a place for all of our families to go and enjoy the campingexperience. I believe we are also seeing the benefit of the Program Director position with theaddition of the new camp and its popularity.

Early Registration has already passed, the Regular Registration deadline is May 15. Asyou can see the camps are filling up. Ifyou are interested in a camp and have not signed up,please go to disciplescrossing.org and fill out the online registration forms.

We held our Youth Ministry Council Representative interviews for the 2014-15 year. Thefollowing youth were selected:

THE CHANGING SHAPE OF AREA MINISTRY

A report from Rev. Renee G. Hoke, Area Minister

On June 1 we cross the "finish line" on our two-year experiment known as theShared Leadership Agreement. This was a TBA/BBA plan to make lemonade out oflemons—the lemons in this casewere shrinkingArearesourcesand the lemonadewas a way to save money by sharing an Area Minister with the Bluebonnet Area andcongregations in the Lower Rio Grande Valley District

From the beginning, both Areas agreed that more time and energy couldbefocused on congregations in transition. In reality, all congregations are in transitionnow. God is calling us to serve a very different culture than the one in which most ofourchurches emerged. Butthere are particular transitions due to achange inleadership—a pastor's retirement, a pastor's resignation to answer a new call orattend to health problems, a decision by the Board that it's time for a leadershipchange, and so on. Pastoral transition is a time for lay leaders to take stock of thehealth andvitality of the ministry. If church members havebeen sittingon thesidelines for a while, critiquing what the pastor is or is not doing, the time betweenpastors seems to encourage church members get back in the game. This interimtime may also be the moment when the leadership team realizes there's not enoughincome to sustain a full-time salary for the next pastor. For others, depending onthe reason for the pastor's departure, it is a time to confront some long-runningconflict Leaders might also decide to update governance systems in order tostreamline the congregation's decision-making structure.

For all congregations, the pastoral transition is a time to embrace reality andexplore possibilities.

TBA is committed to being "all in" when it comes to congregations intransition. We believe support begins with regular, on-site visits by the AreaMinister to meet with the board, to guide the Search Committee, to provideresources and strategic coaching that help church leaders assess ministry strengthsand weaknesses in order to seek the best "fit" between the next shepherd andhis/her flock

While I was focused on the "human resources" in our Area, my colleague JerryKirkpatrick was hard at work putting the finishing touches on an AreaShepherdProgram for TBA. Our AreaShepherds are similar to Regional Elders servingnow inmany regionsacross the U.S. AreaShepherds will offer a ministry of encouragement

to our pastors. They will be close by to provide pastoral care in times of crisis. Theywill be onhand to celebrate special days inthe life ofthe church. Whatablessingthat these qualified ministers have stepped up to serve such a vital role!

We continue to be deeply grateful for the faithful support of individuals andcongregations across TBA. Your gifts provide support at a critical time in the life of alocal church. As new pastors are called and congregations begin new chapters ofministry, your gifts and your prayersstrengthen them for the journey ahead.

Blessings,Renee

My response is to get down on my knees before the Father, this magnificent Father whoparcels out all heaven and earth. I ask him to strengthen you by his Spirit that Christwill live inyou as you open the door and invite him in. And I ask him that with bothfeet plantedfirmly on love, you'll be able to take in with all followers ofJesus theextravagant dimensions ofChrist's love.
