THE STORY OF THE WIZARD OF OZ

Dorothy and her little dog Toto lived on a farm in Kansas with Aunt Em and UncleHenry. One day, their neighbour, the horrible Miss Gultch, took Toto away fromDorothy but luckily he escaped and came back to her. They went to a gypsy caravanwhere the mysterious Professor Marvel told her that her Aunt Em was very sick! As they rushed to get back home, Dorothy and Toto got swept into the middle of afearsome twister.

When Dorothy woke up, she realised she was not inKansas anymore. Instead she found herself in anenchanting and colourful place called Munchkinland! There she met the Munchkins and a good witch calledGlinda who told her that they were very thankful to her as she managed to kill theWicked Witch of the Eastwhen her house fell on her. Just then, the witch’ssister, the Wicked Witch of the West, appeared andwas furious to find thatDorothy was wearing themagic ruby slippers as shewanted them for herself!

Glinda sent the wicked witch awayand told Dorothy to go to the Wizardof Oz in the Emerald City to help her get back to Kansas. Dorothy set off to follow the Yellow BrickRoad and on her way met somewonderful friends. First, she metthe Scarecrow, who wanted a brain, then the Tinman, who wanted aheart, and finally the Lion, whowas in need of some courage.

Dorothy decided that she would take them all with her so that they could get helpfrom the Wizard too! But the Wicked Witch of the West was not far behind them. She attracted Dorothy and her new friends into a field of pretty poppies, but little did they know that the beautiful flowers were poisoned and they soon started to fallasleep. Luckily, the Tinman called out to Glinda for help and she cast a spell to makeit snow over the poppies which woke everyone up. After waking up from the wickedwitch’s poppy spell, Dorothy and her friends continued on towards the Emerald City.

THE STORY OF THE WIZARD OF OZ CONT.

Upon reaching the palace in Emerald City, a mean guard told them that no one couldsee the great Wizard of Oz. This madeDorothy cry as she remembered Aunt Emback in Kansas. To stop her crying the guardlet them in. Inside the Emerald City they metthe Wizard, who told them they must fetchhim the Wicked Witch of the West’s broom. So, Dorothy and her friends set out into thewoods to find the witch’s castle and somehowget the broom. When they reached the castlethey were attacked by the witch’s slavescalled Winkies. The Winkies capturedDorothy and her dog Toto and took them to the castle leaving the three friends inthe woods.

To get Dorothy back, the three friends came up with a plan; they stole some of theWinkies’ uniforms and crept into the castle. Meanwhile, to try and convince Dorothy to give her the Ruby Slippers the Wicked Witch of the West cast a spell upon a glasssand timer and told Dorothy that if the time ran out she would be dead. Just as thesand was about to run out, Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion burst into the room andsaved Dorothy!

To stop the friends and Dorothy from escaping, the witch cast a spell on Scarecrowthat set him on fire, so Dorothy threw water over him and accidentally hit the witch. This caused the Wicked Witch of the West to melt to her death. After the witchmelted, the Winkies asked Dorothy to be their queen. Dorothy told them that shewould rather have the witch’s broom, and then she and her friends set off back tothe Emerald City.

The Wizard granted them the gifts they had all asked for. He gave a degree toScarecrow to prove he had a brain, a heart-shaped watch to the Tinman (but told him that it is more important to be loved by others) and he gave Lion a medal toreward him for his courage. When it was Dorothy’s turn he said he would take herhome in a hot air balloon but Toto ran away just as the balloon took off. Dorothy ran after him and the Wizard left without her.

Just when Dorothy thought she could never go home,Glinda the good witch appeared and told her that she had always had the power to go home, she just didn’tknow it. She tells Dorothy to click her heels three timesand say “there’s no place like home”. Soon enoughDorothy was home safe and sound and it seemed like theWizard, Scarecrow, Tinman, Lion, witches, Munchkinsand Winkies had all been just a dream!

To make the stage at the Lyceum Theatre look like the scenes from The Wizard ofOz, a Set Designer creates some pictures of what the set should look like. The set is the scenery that transforms an empty stage into the Land of Oz.

Here are some of the designs for the set. Become a Set Designer yourself and colourthem in any colour you like.

Dorothy But how?

Scarecrow Well I don’t know because I don’t have a brain!

Dorothy It’s an awful stiff nail!

BUT FINALLY DOROTHY PULLS SCARECROW FREE

Scarecrow My, it’s good to be free

Dorothy Ahhh a crow!

Scarecrow I’ll get it!

THE CROW FLIES AWAY WITHOUT FEAR

Scarecrow You see I can’t even scare a crow!

CLASS DRAMA ACTIVITY (To be led by a teacher)

STATUE CIRCLE

Ask your class to stand in a circle.

Describe to the group that you are going to pretend to be still and silent statues asindividuals. Have a practice at all being individual statues that represent the emotionof ‘happiness’.

Ask the class to turn round and face the outside of the circle.

Tell them that you are going to call out a word and count to three. After threeeveryone is going to jump round and face the circle and make a statue that they think represents the word you call out.

Some emotions to try could be:

HAPPINESS

SADNESS

EXCITEMENT

NERVOUSNESS

LOVE

COURAGE

CLEVERNESS

You could even try some characters from The Wizard of Oz:

SCARECROW

TINMAN

LION

DOROTHY

AUNT EM

THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST

After each statue ask the group to have a look at each other and note any interestingsimilarities and differences.
