Jeff Hawkins
Provo City
School District
Dixon Middle
School
A year-and-a-half ago Jeff Hawkins willingly left his post at a “new” elemen-tary school for an unknown journey into the (OS1) world. Until this time, Jeffwas first and only head custodian at the 9 year-old Spring Creek ElementarySchool nestled in the foot hills of beautiful southeast Provo. During his time atSpring Creek, Jeff deservingly acquired the reputation of being one of ProvoSchool District’s best and most conscientious custodians, and his buildingone of the cleanest and best maintained.
So why would Jeff want to jump ship on his little haven to enter a foreignjourney into the unknown (OS1) world? Jeff began as an assistant custodianat the high school level and through his dedication and professionalism waseventually promoted to the coveted position as head custodian of a brand-new building. But with all this, there has always been one thing lacking inJeff’s mind – respect. Jeff considers his chosen profession to be a very im-portant one; one that deserves much more respect than it has ever seemedto get. So, from the first time in Jeff’s career, his introduction to ManageMen,(OS1) and the idea that there was an organization dedicated to the con-cept of professionalism and respect for janitors and custodians, his interestwas peaked.
9
(Continued on next page)
10
Little did Jeff know, however, that when he volunteered for the (OS1) pilotprogram, that he would be moved from his pristinely maintained school tothe district’s oldest and “worst” school. In fact, when his fellow custodiansheard he was moving to Dixon many of them asked what he “did to de-serve to getting moved to Dixon!”
The task of trying to pilot (OS1) in a building of this condition was not only adaunting task for Jeff, but was a serious concern for even the most sea-soned (OS1)ers themselves – the ManageMen team! But with absolute re-solve and determination to prove (OS1) could be successful under even themost challenging circumstances, Jeff and his team had less than 2 weeks inwhich to “set up shop,” hold Boot Camp and begin. It was anything buteasy. But after 9 months of hard work, working and reworking job cards, andconstant encouragement from ManageMen to Jeff, and from Jeff to hiscustodial team, Dixon Middle School went from a Baseline Audit of only 6%to an impressive Progress Audit of 80%! Of greater value to Jeff, however, than the accolades of a great audit score are the many unsolicited com-ments and letters from faculty and staff about the cleanliness of the school. One such letter and compliment was published in a recent volume of theCleaning Gazette.
Jeff Hawkins is one of my heroes. I believe he has truly demonstrated hisworthiness of being considered the Outstanding Cleaning Worker not onlyin the Provo School District, but in the (OS1) world as well. I highly commendand recommend him as an individual who is redefining the custodial field asthe respectable and worthy profession it is.

Mrs. Ungerman was the principal at Dixon Middle school during the (OS1)pilot. From the beginning of learning about the program, she was very inter-ested in bringing the pilot to Dixon and has been very supportive in the teamsefforts to create significant change in the way the school looks and feelswith respect to the custodial efforts.
Mrs. Ungerman has recently accepted a new position beginning this com-ing school year at one of the district’s three high schools. In accepting thisposition, she commented to the Superintendent that she would accept thenew position so long as she “could take the (OS1) cleaning program withher to the new school.” As the Director of Facilities for the District, I am ex-cited for the opportunity to work with Mrs. Ungerman in transforming yetanother one of our schools into an (OS1) Clean facility. Mrs. Ungerman hasbeen and will continue to be an integral member of the (OS1) team in trans-forming our schools into healthy, clean environments that enhance the edu-cation of Provo’s K-12 students.
