IN THIS ISSUE: OCTOBER 7 - 21

I’ve been painting my apartment fora couple of days now. Netflix hasbeen running non-stop to occupy

my brain while I do the monotonousand painstaking work. Last night Istumbled upon a documentary called2012: Time for Change, and as Istroked maroon onto my previouslydrab walls, I began to learn that theworld is going to collapse very soonunless everyone trips on psychedelicsand becomes self-actualized.

IMDb says, “2012: Time ForChange is a documentary feature thatpresents ways to transform our unsus-tainable society into a regenerativeplanetary culture. This can beachieved through a personal and glob-al change of consciousness and thesystemic implementation of ecologicaldesign.”

Let the differences in my andIMDb’s descriptions of the documen-tary tell you one thing: It handles awide variety of subjects. A wide, widevariety…

To Daniel Pinchbeck (a majorcontributor to the film), if you want tobelieve that Ellen Page (of Inceptionand Juno) seriously washes her clothes

in a giant barrel attached by a convey-or belt to her rotary bike, all to save onher energy bill… I guess that’s yourprerogative. I you want you believe, asyou so clearly do, that Christianity is ahoax… that’s your prerogative too. But, I think you should know that reli-gious commentary is not your forte. Iwould stick to doing what you do best:tree hugging.

CALLING ALL ZOMBIES!!Statesboro’s annual Scare on the Square is right around the corner and thatmeans it’s time to join the un-dead in performing the Averitt Center’s annualThriller dance! Help us celebrate this pop-culture icon traditional on Halloween.

Rehearsals this year will take place on October 3rd, 10th, and 24th at6:00 p.m. in the Sea Island Bank Parking Lot in downtown Statesboro.

Zombies of all ages are welcome to join this fun and FREE program! Bringyour neighbors and friends to learn the famous routine from Sherri Thompson, owner of Southern Dance Academy.

The final run-through of the performance will be on October 29th at 4:00p.m. with the show beginning at 9:00 p.m. that same evening.

It is our hope to make this event even larger and more thrilling than lastyear and to truly scare the entire square! Join us downtown – if you dare.

The Georgia Southern Eagles arefamous for their historic use of thetriple option offense. Ask any die-

hard Eagle fan in the Statesboro area, and I guarantee they will bemore than happy to tell youall of the intricacies ofthis offensive attack. What about the fanswho simply don’tknow what the tripleoption is? I knowyou would like tothink that there is noway one could callthemselves a true fanof Georgia Southernfootball, and not know aboutthe triple option. Unfortunately, such fans do exist. No worries though! The purpose of this article is to simply informthose who don’t know, and to entertain thosewho know the triple option like the back oftheir hands.

The triple option is really a very easyoffense to learn. It is one of my personalfavorites to see being ran to perfection. It allstarts with having a great coach who knowsall of the ins and outs of the offense. Thetypical option offense lines up the sameway every snap. You have the quarterback

directly under the center awaiting the snap.Behind the quarterback awaits the fullbackin a three point stance. The fullback is the

primary ball carrier in any option attack.Last, but not least, you have two

running backs lined up to theleft and right of the full-

back. Once the quarter-back hikes the ball hehas several decisions tomake. In most cases, the quarterback willsimply hand the balloff to moving fullback

and let him do what hecan. If the quarterback

decides against the handoff,he has two more choices. He

can either pitch the ball to a run-ning back or keep it himself. That, my

friends, is the triple option in a nutshell! In a recent Georgia Southern football

game against Western Carolina, the Eaglesexecuted to triple option to perfection ontheir way to racking up an amazing 634yards rushing against the Catamountdefense on their way to a 52-20 blowoutvictory. After 3 games, Georgia Southernhas outscored opponents 145-58 while scor-ing 48.3 points per game.

THE FAMED TRIPLE OPTION

Page 6: The 11th Hour - Statesboro

06 OCTOBER 7 - 21 2011

His white shirt and black pants lightlybear a blend of colors, similar to an artpallet. His hands have formed calluses

to act as a protective shield from the sandpaperpavement that is his canvas. Beside him is hischalk supplies, an assortment of colors, sizes, andtypes. His almond colored top hat is placedupside down, with black written letters that read“Tips.” The irritating gnats have finally passed, the streetlights illuminate the sidewalk, cars passby and the area is becoming full of activity: this ishis art studio.

The Statesboro night scene is typically fullof energy and spirit but recently, the scene hasbecome colorful too. Chalk art has begun toappear on the sidewalks, primarily betweenLanier Drive and Georgia Avenue. The artistbehind these colorful pieces is 35-year-oldDaniel Wair.

Daniel and his fiancé recently moved herefrom Atlanta this June when his fiancé got a jobteaching for Georgia Southern University in theDepartment of Communication Arts. Over thepast few months, Daniel has been happily sur-prised with the positive reactions he has gottenfor his work.

“I get a lot of people who stop to talk andtell me how they love it. I wasn’t sure how peoplewere going to take it but everybody’s been reallyawesome. It’s been surprisingly accepting here.”

Daniel’s art background originally startedwith theater. It was not until ten years ago whilein college that he picked up a sketchbook andstarted drawing seriously. His only professional

art lesson was an introduction drawing class.Daniel began experimenting with chalk art

five years ago in Atlanta. His first piece was anoversized Brian from Family Guy with a martiniglass in his hand. After seeing the work of profes-sional chalk artists Julian Beever and KurtWenner on the Internet, Daniel instantlybecame interested and wanted to try it.

His black 3X4 sketchbook contains all ofhis drawings and ideas for pieces. He enjoys ani-mated designs, similar to American cartoonistMatt Groening’s style. There is no real strategyto what piece Daniel decides to draw each night.

“Every once in awhile I’ll go out with some-thing in mind but usually it’s just whatever strikes

me from my sketchbook.”A typical session for Daniel begins around

10 p.m., not because he wants to avoid the heatduring the day, but because he cannot stand thegnats. On average, each piece takes him three tofour hours to finish. Simpler pieces can be fin-ished in an hour, while detailed pieces can last

him over five hours. He has collected an array of chalk over the

past five years. Most of his collection consists ofCrayola chalk he gets from Walmart or dollarstores. Other chalk consists of paper chalks, which are his brighter colors. Charcoals make upthe rest of his collection, which are used for shad-ing, outlining, and other line work. He uses abouttwo or three sticks of the bulky Crayola chalk, half of a piece of paper chalk, and half of a pieceof charcoal for each design.

When Daniel finishes a piece, he gentlysprays water on the top. This is the last step of theprocess. The water acts as a seal to the chalk, adding the last blend, so once it dries off, peoplecan walk or ride bikes over it and it won’t damagethe piece.

Daniel will usually do two pieces a night, depending on the scale of detail. His schedulefor his sidewalk art is best suited for the week-end when he has the most free time. He gen-

erally spaces his sessions out, allowing hishands to rest.

“After three nights in a row, I just can’tdo it anymore. The sidewalk rubs my fingersreally raw. When I first started doing this, before my hands got used to it, after aboutthree hours I could see where the chalk wasmoist because it was so raw. I’m missing fin-gerprints on a couple fingers.”

Daniel’s tried alternatives to relieve hishands. After researching, he saw an idea thatsuggested using the felt strips from old chalkerasers for blending. He has also tried usinggloves, but the pavement eats right throughthem. One pair of gloves is needed per piece.Over the five years of his chalk art experience,Daniel has preferred building calluses on hisbare hands because he enjoys the feel of thesidewalk. It is part of the experience.

As long as the weather allows for it and hehas the time, Daniel tries to chalk as much as hecan. His pieces usually last until it rains hardenough to wash the chalk away. He doesn’t mindlosing any of his pieces to the rain though. Tohim, it is just part of the process.

“The rain just gives me a blank canvas and Ican just start over again.”

Daniel aspires to take his art to New YorkCity one day and fill the streets of Manhattanwith his artwork. It is just a matter of time andmoney until he makes his trip to what he calls the“ultimate city.”

For the time being however, the biggestpayoff for Daniel is seeing people’s encouragingreactions and watching them snap pictures. Henever signs his pieces because he likes the senseof anonymity of it, but it is always rewardingwhen he walks down the street and hears peopletalking about his art.

“If I could do this professionally, this wouldbe the dream.” DANAE KAIMULOA
