1The Four Rrsquos of the 132d Wing

Readiness Recruiting amp Retention and Resiliency

A new Adjutant GeneralBy Col Mark ChidleyCommander 132d Wing

At Joint Forces Headquarters on Tuesday August 20th Governor Reynolds introduced Maj Gen Ben Corell as the new leader of the Iowa National Guard Our new TAG was born in Manchester in northeast Iowa and raised in Strawberry Point He has commanded at the Company Battalion Brigade and Division levels Most recently MG Corell commanded the 34th Infantry Division in their recent deployment to Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (SPARTAN SHIELD) from September 2018 to July 2019 He is a proven leader and warrior and the Iowa National Guard is in good hands

I also want to provide some feedback from the Air Combat Command Unit Effectiveness Inspection we had from August 1-5 We had 67 inspectors fan out across the base to review our programs and assess our compliance with Air Force Instructions Ultimately they found that the 132d Wing was Effective in all four major graded areas Managing Resources Leading People Improving the Unit and Executing the Mission We have some deficiencies to clean up (zero criticals) but we met our objective of not doing anything out of the ordinary to prepare The Inspector General Team was impressed with the wing and our IG team I want to thank each of you for your hospitality great attitudes and professionalism that makes this such an outstanding Wing

There will be a couple of non-standard things going on over September drill First we will have approximately 20 ROTC cadets from Iowa State University on base on Saturday This is another great opportunity to educate future Air Force leaders on the Air Guard so please help us make the most of it If the opportunity presents itself donrsquot hesitate to tell your story The other event will happen at the end of the duty day on Saturday Snaketoberfest Find your lederhosen and dirndl and join your fellow wing members at the pavilion outside the DFAC This is about fun and fellowship so please attend regardless of whether you like German beverages or not

Finally September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and itrsquos the month we usually conduct awareness training As most of you have already heard Gen Goldfein has directed all Wings to conduct a Resiliency Tactical Pause this fall We will be training the small group facilitators during September drill so we will conduct most squadron level discussions during October drill We can all benefit from honest conversations about mental health conditions and suicide because just one conversation can change a life Suicide has affected this wing directly so please take some time this month before the October UTA to consider how we can strengthen airmen connectedness and eliminate barriers and stigmas to getting help

Thank you for what you do Have an outstanding drill weekend

Veterans Stand down is an opportunity to help Veterans in need get needed services and help with items such as meals clothing haircuts dental care job leads state issued identification cards and more We help over 1000 people each year as our stand down is one of the biggest and most successful in the entire nation

Helping with the annual stand down has re-opened my eyes to what the definition of need is each and every year So many people are appreciative and a few have personally thanked me the experience brings a smile to my face every time Last year there was a gentleman who recently became homeless and needed some assistance he was so happy to get medical services and some job leads It is nice to get outside of the gates and share with the local community

This is a great opportunity to help those less fortunate and it shows people in the community that we care about those who are less fortunate Please consider helping with this community outreach project This is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community and looks good on your EPR

This year we will be at the corner of E12th and Des Moines Street near I-235 (you can see East DM High School across the interstate) We will be setting up tents and fencing on Thursday the 5th of September and tearing down on Sunday the 8th start time on both days will be 0800 hrs You may volunteer for one or both days any help will be greatly appreciated

If you would like to help out this year you can contact me at DSN 261-8553 or you can send an E-Mail to my account and I will put your name on the list and contact you afterwards This event will be here sooner than you realize and I hope to hear from you soon thank you Mr John Connett 132d LRS

Feedback is critical for the communications process to be effective It makes communication a continuous process It helps create an open communication climate We must create an environment that encourages feedback

Feedback is something we may dread at times We hear the terms EPR ACA technician appraisal and we imme-diately dread the process These are all valuable tools that take time and effort to accomplish but they have a critical purpose It does not have to be a difficult process When handled the appropriate way feedback is an invaluable tool for both supervision and for employees Feedback needs to be constructive and not critical It needs to open communica-tion channels between the sender and receiver It should provide a forum for ideas on how to correct and issue improve a process or just give a pat on the back for a job well done among other things

We need to be told how were doing Without feedback were going blind into any endeavor Maybe you will reach your goal maybe you will just toil aimlessly until you give up Effective and timely feedback is a critical component of a successful performance management program and should be used in conjunction with setting performance goals If ef-fective feedback is given to employees on their progress towards their goals employee performance will improve People need to know in a timely manner how theyre doing whats working and whats not

Feedback is not just a formal process such as EPRs ACA and Tech Evals There is also informal feedback This feed-back does not have to be at set intervals it can be at any time that your supervision or you feel it is needed It is also a two-way street supervisors need feedback from their unit members and others in the Wing to ensure they are effectively serving the needs of the unit Continued feedback is important across the entire organization in order to remain aligned to goals create strategies make improvements to processes improve relationships and much more If feedback has been provided regularly then the formal feedback sessions should not contain any surprises for the those being rated

Feedback is critical to inform people on issues that may affect them Congratulate people on doing an outstanding job Emphasize the importance of new ideas to strengthen the communication process Effective feedback both positive and negative is very helpful Feedback is valuable information to make important decisions High performing units are that way because they consistently search for ways to make their best even better There is a reason that we are asked to do surveys it is a way to deliberately ask for feedback on how the unit doing We must acknowledge that feedback is helpful only when it highlights weaknesses as well as strengths Feedback is critical for succession planning If you want to coach someone to be able to take your place one day they will need to understand how and where they should change their performance and behavior in order to step into your role As a leader isnrsquot this one of our primary goals We need to make sure the people we lead are ready to take over when we are gone to insure that the unit will be in good hands

We are accustomed to change at the 132d now and feedback is an essential component of effective change Within
