He is a Fellow of the AAAS, ACM, IEEE, and NAI, and a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, in recognition of his pioneering contributions to human-computer interaction and information visualization. His widely-used contributions include the clickable highlighted web-links, high-precision touchscreen keyboards for mobile devices, and tagging for photos. Shneiderman’s information visualization innovations include dynamic query sliders for Spotfire, development of treemaps for viewing hierarchical data, novel network visualizations for NodeXL, and event sequence analysis for electronic health records.

Mica EndsleyPresident at SA Technologies and former Chief Scientist for the US Air ForceMica is President of SA Technologies and is the former Chief Scientist for the US Air Force. Dr. Endsley is a Fellow and Past-President of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. She is a world leader in the

design, development and evaluation of systems to support human situation awareness (SA) and decision-making, and the integration of humans and automation. She has authored over 200 scientific articles and is the co-author of Analysis and Measurement of Situation Awareness and Designing for Situation Awareness.

Wendy JephsonHead of Behavioral Science for Market Technology Risk and Surveillance Solutions at NASDAQWendy is Head of Behavioral Science for Market Technology Risk and Surveillance solutions at Nasdaq. She is responsible for leading a unique team of experts that combines behavioral science, financial domain knowledge, and advanced analytics to bring diverse thinking and cross-industry experience to solving some of the biggest challenges in financial services. INVITED SPEAKERSJudith OrasanuJudith Orasanu has an been an integral part of the NDM community since its inception. During the 1980s, she served as the program manager for the Basic Research Office at the Army Research Institute where she was the director for the research program that was the precursor for the Naturalistic Decision Making movement. Her studies of aircrew decision making at NASA-Ames furthered our understanding of how teams make decisions in dynamic environments. She helped found the Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making technical group of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

Daniel SerfatyAs Aptima’s Founder and CEO, Daniel Serfaty has led Aptima to become the premier Human-Centered Engineering business in the world. His work optimizes the integration of humans with intelligent technologies in defense, healthcare, aviation, and education. His keynote addresses around the world are encouraging his audiences to imagine a future in which human and artificial intelligences work together in the service of humankind. Daniel’s interdisciplinary background includes degrees in mathematics, psychology, and aerospace

engineering from the Université de Paris, the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology, and UConn. He is the recipient of the University of Connecticut Distinguished Service Award and has been inducted in its Engineering Hall of Fame. He remembers fondly the spirited fights between engineers and psychologists at the very first NDM Conference thirty years ago.

Lois JamesLois James is an assistant professor in the Washington State University (WSU) College of Nursing, where she focuses on bias, stress, sleep, and performance in “high stress” populations such as police officers, military personnel, nurses, and top tier athletes. She has received multiple honors and awards for her work, and is internationally recognized as a leading expert in her field. Dr. James’s work has been published in academic journals, practitioner magazines, and mainstream media such as the New York Times and the Washington Post. During her time at WSU, James has brought in approximately $5,000,000 of extramural funding.

Rhona FlinRhona Flin is Professor of Industrial Psychology at Aberdeen Business School, Robert Gordon University and Emeritus Professor of Applied Psychology at the University of Aberdeen. Her research examines human performance and safety in high risk industries and acute healthcare.

Paul FalzerPaul R. Falzer, Ph.D., is a Research Scientist at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System. His research focuses on clinical decision making, treatment interventions and outcomes, implementation science, and evidence-based medicine. Paul will be speaking about problems that have resulted from sweeping attempts to improve the delivery of health care, and how initiatives to optimize decision making have been integral to these efforts. Paul will discuss how naturalistic decision making concepts and approaches enable us to appreciate the current situation and address some of its intractable complications.
