The present vicar began about 3 years ago to have regularly service both morning and afternoon. Besides it being lambing time several persons are not able to go to a place of worship.

It will be seen that there is a great want of free accomodation [sic]. In consequence only very few of the cottagers (who are the majority in this parish) are able to attend church. Of the families of those who occupy the large pews, a portion only attend Church at the [same] time, and this, coupled with the fact that the majority of the parish-ioners reside at a considerable distance from the Church, and with the lack of free accomodation, is the cause why the atten-dance at Church is so disproportionate to the extent of the whole population of the parish.

I have taken the liberty of forwarding the accompanying returns of schools and places of worship under my superintendance direct to yourself, in order to prevent any improper use being made of them by the officers appointed to receive them, the majority of whom in Notting-ham are Dissenters.

You will perceive that I have not filled up the return No. 7 for St. Mary's Church, simply because there is no column to show the deduc-tions from the income: and as these are very considerable, to fill up the return according to the present form would convey an erroneous and injurious idea of the real value of the living.

I understand that in the case of Dissenting Chapels a return of income is not required: whereas many of them are endowed; it would likewise appear desirable to ascertain the income from pew rents, just in the one case as in the other.

I beg respectfully to suggest that were the clergy required to make these returns direct to yourself, the request would in most instan-ces be complied with; but I have heard several express an insuperable objection to returns of income and schools expenses passing interme-diately through the hands of persons who in numerous instances are hostile to the established Church.
