Objectives
• In September 2000, world leaders at the UN Millennium Summit agreed to set a time of bound and measurable goals and targets, called Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to combat poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women.
• The MDGs provide a framework for the entire UN system to work coherently together towards a common goal. Although it may seem that there is global progress towards the MDGs, this progress is too slow and uneven.
• A large majority of nations will reach the MDGs only if they get substantial support – advocacy, expertise and resources - from outside such as Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), such as JCI.
