Let handicraft meet today’s technology. Let red and white team up with purple and gold. Let wood and straw be friends with the next generation of materials. Let LED-equipped lighting decorations shine beside traditional candlesticks. Let thousand year old ornaments be the inspiration for tomorrow’s holiday decorations. Let the old meet the new and the new meet the old. What you get is unlimited possibilities. Unlimited ways to decorate your home. Unlimited ways to celebrate the holidays in whatever style you like.Safe, bold, expressive, moderate, traditional, experimental – it’s all there for you to discover.
Unlimited winter

Swedes have always valued and cherished good lighting. With a winter season that lasts 4–5 months, with few hours of daylight, people need to lighten up their homes in various ways. Putting candles and lighting decorations throughout the home has also another well-known effect: it creates a very cosy and inviting atmosphere. This year’s lighting collection GLÄNSA (means “shine” in Swedish) leaves no gloomy corners. With chandeliers, drapes, stars, light chains, hanging decorations and table mats, creating the right holiday setting and mood has never been easier.
Thank you, darkness!

“With GLÄNSA LYSA outdoor lighting, I wanted to create something new. The collection includes hanging lights/drape, a light chain you can put on the ground and a huge chandelier. All can be used outdoors and have one common denominator - the snowball. It felt natural to use LED lights, because they give off a crisp light that reminds you of winter and snow. Use the pieces together or alone. I hope the snowballs inspire you to decorate outdoors and brighten up the winter darkness.”

“In GLÄNSA FILT decoration lighting I brought together traditional forms and materials with new, modern technology. Because LED lights don’t get warm in the same way as traditional lights, I was able to use felt to create new, unexpected things. How about a cylinder that you can also roll out into a table mat? The entire series feels warm and cosy - hope it inspires you to decorate it new ways.”

Better for you, better for everyoneLight-emitting diodes, so called LEDs, use less energy, last longer and are much more durable than ordinary light bulbs. And why are we telling you this? Simply because we have equipped every single bulb in GLÄNSA FILT, GLÄNSA STJÄRNA, GLÄNSA DIAMANT and GLÄNSA LYSA with these small, high-effi cient and energy-saving innovations. Smart, isn’t it!

On December 13, Swedes celebrate Saint Lucia’s Day, a tradition that goes back more than 200 years. According to the old Julian calendar, which in Sweden lasted until 1753, it was known to be the longest and darkest night of the year, and the celebration of Lucia became the symbol of the returning sun.
GLÄNSA electric crown looks like the crown of candles that the white-gowned Lucia wears on her head. Together with her entourage of star boys and handmaidens, she spreads light to young and old alike.

Red and white colours. Wood. Straw. Metal. Felt. Wool and linen. It’s hard to imagine a more classical Scandinavian winter holiday setting. The new ISIG collection of decorations, textiles and lighting offers all that: timeless tradition and exquisite handicraft. We also thought it could be exciting to express our heritage in a new form. So we added black to the colour palette, while our designers were totally inspired by very, very old Scandinavian ornaments and decorations. A classic for the next century?

“The graceful swirling patterns in the ISIG textile series we borrowed from the beautiful ornaments on the jewellery and clothing of the Viking Age. We usually design patterns that are very simple and graphic. That’s what made this such a fun challenge. We want the classic colours and materials to fi ll your home with a sense of tradition and handicraft - and create a warm and cosy feeling. We also hope the textiles feel so timeless that you can use them year after year.”

“I’m very fond of metal - it’s a classic Scandinavian material and easy to work with. When I designed ISIG candleholders I wanted to use the unique qualities of metal to create something timeless, without too much ornamentation. The candleholders are reminiscent of traditional Scandinavia handicrafts and a time when people dipped their own candles. The simple style also makes them fi t well in any home - and in many different environments.”

Every holiday season from 2005 and on, IKEA donates $1 for every soft toy sold to UNICEF and Save the Children. This annual campaign, which lasts from mid-November to late December, has so far raised nearly 5 million euros (over $7 million CAD). Every penny is earmarked for these two organizations, whose overall goal is to improve children’s lives around the world. This year’s campaign is estimated to support UNICEF and Save the Children with enough money to realize 12 different projects in 10 countries. On the next page, you can read about two specifi c projects in Albania and Romania and the impact they have on preventing child traffi cking and child labour.

AlmaLittle Alma is an 11-year old girl. She lives in a shack in the suburbs of Tirana with her family – three brothers and a sister. Her parents are illiterate and unemployed and often resort to begging on the streets. There is an FBSH centre in her town. FBSH is an Albanian non-governmental organisation. The initials stand for Children of the World and of Albania. Alma has been going to school at the FBSH centre for two years and the staff has worked hard to ensure her integration into school life. Alma enjoys going to school and is even eager to study throughout the summer – just so she will be ready for the new school year.
This is quite an achievement considering her background. Her parents could not afford to send her to school and it was her responsibility to look after the younger family members while her mother was begging along the streets of Tirana. When her parents are away, Alma takes care of the whole family. She cleans the shack, cooks, bakes bread and feeds the children. From the support she receives through the FBSH centre, Alma is provided with a degree of safety and hope for the future.
Albania Preventing Child Trafficking
36
BackgroundFBSH (Children of the World and of Albania) aims to tackle child trafficking by addressing some of the root causes. These include poverty, the marginalization of minorities, insufficient education, poor employment opportunities, domestic violence and the low status of girls. FBSH works in partnership with local authorities and youth centres. It also undertakes advocacy at local and national levels. So far, the FBSH project has led to the setting up of two major youth centres and a sports and recreation facility. These help children who are at risk of being abused or trafficked.

Cornelia and AlexandruThe Romanian town of Fundulea is transform-ing from a poor village to a middle-class town. Sadly, many of the disadvantaged children are being left behind in the race for prosperity. Association Equilibre Romania has set up a day centre, which gives hope to these children. Without it, many would end up in child labour. The centre is supported by UNICEF through IKEA funding. Following the Easter break, the centre is once again filled with the sound of children’s laughter. Cornelia and her brother Alexandra both go to the centre. Cornelia walks in from the playground and proudly declares, “I don’t have any bad grades in my report card!”

BackgroundThe protection of children and a struggling health system are two of the biggest challenges facing Romania. More than 70,000 children are believed to be exploited through child labour. This is partly fuelled by the estimated 4,500 newborn babies abandoned every year. The objective of this project is to prevent child labour and other forms of human exploitation. This can be achieved by promoting community-based services. Reducing the number of newborn babies abandoned every year is central to the success of the project. As a part of this initiative, mixed teams of healthcare staff and social workers give guidance and counselling to new mothers.
$1 is a fortune! For every soft toy you buy between November 3 and December 24, $1 will go to UNICEF and Save the Children to support education for chil-dren around the world.
