SHEPHERD’S CORNER….Frank Daniels

FROM KEN’S PEN

The following question has been submitted: “Why did one of the criminals on the cross say to Jesus, ‘Lord, remem-ber me when you come into your kingdom’? It seems like no one else understood that Jesus’ kingdom would be coming soon, disciples or opponents.” The reference is to Luke 23:39–43, which reads as follows: “One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!”

40 But the other rebuked him, saying,

“Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41

And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”

42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me

when you come into your kingdom.” 43

And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

That is an excellent question. It is certainly the case that Jesus’ teaching regarding His kingdom was misunderstood by the disciples (note their question and Jesus’ response in Acts 1:6, 7: “So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or sea-

sons that the Father has fixed by his own authority). During Jesus’ public ministry, it appears that one of the favorite activities among the disciples was to argue about the positions of power each would have in the kingdom (cf. Luke 9:46–48; Matthew 18:1–5; Matthew 20:20–28; Luke 22:24–27). When we realize how greatly the disciples misunderstood Jesus’ teaching about the kingdom, it makes the criminal’s request, even more remarkable!

However, while it is possible the criminal had a greater understanding and appreciation of the kingdom than the dis-ciples did, that may not be the case. He may still have been expecting a materialistic kingdom just as the disciples did. The circumstances of his request is what is truly remarkable. Here is a man who knows exactly the kind of suffering Je-sus is enduring, because he also is on a cross, dying alongside Jesus. Here is a man who realizes that there is no es-cape from that cross. Here is a man who is well aware of the desperate situation he is in, and recognizes that Jesus is in the same situation. In spite of these observations, the man still asks to be remembered in Jesus’ kingdom. This indi-cates that he believed that Jesus would still be a king over his kingdom! Unlike his “partner in crime,” this man quit mocking Jesus (cf. Mark 15:32), and instead believed Jesus would be able to “remember him in his kingdom”!

Had he heard Jesus teaching about the kingdom at some earlier time? Or was his knowledge of the kingdom limited to the insults from the chief priests and rulers of the Jews and the sign attached to Jesus’ cross, which read, “This is Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews”?

Whether his understanding of the kingdom was greater than the disciples’ or not, one thing is certain: at the time he made this request of Jesus, his faith was certainly greater than theirs!

When we praise God we exercise our mind, heart and spirit in activity that enhances our spiritual health. The care of health takes two basic forms: corrective and preventative. If we become ill, we seek cure. To avoid ill-health, we seek to do that which maintains good health.

Praise is a preventative against faithlessness. Perceive this in a solemn review of the faithless mentioned in Ro-mans chapter one. See the connection between praise and faithfulness. For the faithless are described as those who “although they knew God, did not glorify Him as God, nor gave thanks to Him.” (v. 21) Further, they are described as those who “exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and who worshiped and served created things rather than the Crea-tor who is forever praised.” (v. 25) A factor relative to the development of faithlessness is the disinclination to praise God. Note that they knew, but did not acknowledge. Neither appropriate glorification, nor ardent gratitude flowed from them. Bereft of affection for God, but blessed with a spirit inclined to worship, they substituted the created for the Creator.

Awe and gratitude are essential to faithfulness, because awe generates humility and gratitude begets affection. Praise is the expression of awe and gratitude.

“Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise.” (Psalm 145:3)
